How do you answer "How Many Movies Have You Seen?"

#1

Post by blueboybob » April 15th, 2020, 11:58 pm

What I mean is look at

Image

This is my count of rated items on IMDB (by my rating)

Have I seen 12993 movies? Or does Video count? Does tvMovie count?

When people ask I usually say about 13000 movies and 7000 shorts. Then link them to my IMDB page.

How do you answer?

We've already had this convo.
Everything Video Counts unless a "film" is specifically defined.
If so, roughly 10K long-form films.
Otherwise, 100K would be a ballpark figure :P

Actually, I've just started in on a project that would answer this question... for me and the way I'm handling things, it's everything but TV Episode and TV Series. So just under 25k for you.

Does someone actually wonder how many movies someone has seen. Other than me & u & other freaks? No-one has ever asked me outside of ICM.

I use my Letterboxd number, which is currently 2430. At least 95% of that is features, though, and I'm hoping to reach 3000 by year's end.

I get asked that when I tell people I'm a movie nerd and keep track of my ratings. I've actually answered that several times myself to non-ICM and non-cinephile people.

yeah, in real life I usually just say something like "a lot" - if pressed I generally default to "well over 10,000 titles in my log" or sometimes I'll mention "I watch about 1,000 movies a year"

no one has ever questioned me about video vs cinema or now vs streaming, nor can I remember anyone asking, "does that include shorts or mini-series?"

and other than these general navel-gazing threads, I'm not sure anyone here or on iCM cares much about how many I've seen though people do like to compare stats when something changes - new lists, updates to old lists, etc

I just say "a lot." The only people who've asked me beyond that for a number have been ICMers. :-D

I used to aggressively volunteer that information to every person I talked to for more than 2 minutes. On the rare occasions I get asked these days, I say ‘quite a few’. Nobody has ever asked beyond that, but I they did, I’d just show them my icm account, even though I have checked a handful of tv shows, episodes etc.

Mentioning the total count doesn't mean more to most people than just saying "a lot". If you mention the average number of movies per week or month, they can relate to it. So I usually say "10-12 films a week".

I tend to count the feature-length films I've watched. I have them all in a list so I know it's that number + let's say 50-150 from childhood I may not remember or I didn't enough to rate.

As for shorts and mid-length, I compiled them as well, but I forget quite often to update that list.

Same here, though I usually follow that up with "but I don't watch series or anything". I still get some weird looks though :D
As for counting, everything 30 minutes or up counts, they only ambiguity in my numbers are some OAVs/mini-series I included. But that's just a handful.

With OVAs I count 2-3 episodes as a feature movie and more as a miniseries. I also count short compilations like Memories as features.

Anthologies are just movies for me, the problems with OAVs is that some 2-parters were actually released as shorter films over here, so it's a bit muddled. I definitely don't count regular series like Lain or Haibane Renmei, but something like Gunbuster, Yukikaze or Karas is probably part of my overall count.

Pretty sure nobody has ever asked me that except on movie forums. And on IMDb it was common to be accused of being a liar if you said you'd seen more than, say, 5000 films or so. "Nobody has seen that many movies. NOBODY. EVER." Ah those troll-filled days.

Also why is this OT?

Yeah, I wondered about it being OT as well but your point about "Nobody has seen..." is probably how I interpret the look of surprise when I throw out a number over 10,000. I wonder how many movies an average person actually sees a year. I know the number is much lower if we're only talking about going to the cinema, but I'm guessing it can go up dramatically depending on one's TV viewing habits. But I've no idea what those numbers look like for an average American. (and then there's the proverbial problem of how closely a person watched the film, how much of it they saw, was it edited for TV - oh, wait, those are all movie geek concerns! :P )

I think an average of 1-2 films a week is probably normal. So about 50-100 films a year? Tops.

That number seems really low to me, especially if TV is taken into account. I also think it might change by age. I bet Netflix has some sort of data like this though.

The average person who pays for a streaming service probably watches a lot more movies (or TV) per week than the average person.

Same here!

Like Burney, I usually just say a lot. If they insist, I give a number somewhere in the right area.

This thread's question, though, relates to another perennial forum question: What do you actually check.

I don't check shorts, tv series, miniseries, episodes, or even TV movies. That last one is something I've been thinking of changing as the old TV-movie divide becomes more irrelevant than ever.

I don't check regular TV series - either as episodes or full series - on ICM or IMDb. That goes back to when I first joined IMDb when I think they had a rather chaotic way of listing TV stuff. Also I didn't want to have TV stuff mixed in for when I participated in polls, and I've continued that to this day - the only exceptions are things that are official checks like The Prisoner. I do keep track of scripted TV shows on my own elsewhere but I don't watch that much anyway. No point from my perspective in keeping track of news or talk shows or reality tv, cooking and travel shows, etc. Just don't care.

Looking at the non-film geeks that I know ... they really don't watch that many films, not even on TV. Mostly series, sports and some TV shows. 90 minutes is a long time nowadays, people seem to prefer more bit-sized entertainment.

Yup. My brother probably spends as much time in front of a screen as I do - actually probably more since his marriage broke up and he started spending 6-12 hours every single day on dating apps - and he loves movies, but he's much more likely to watch the news or Star Trek than a film and he is incapable of sitting still for more than half an hour so he stops everything he watches multiple times if it doesn't have commercials.

1-2 movies a weeks is already a lot for most people. I think Onderhond is right: most people mainly watch TV shows and if they have Netflix, they mostly watch series.

How do you answer "How Many Movies Have You Seen?"
It's not often that I get asked this question. When I do get asked, I round to the nearest 100, so I say something like "I've seen about XX00 feature films."

To mention that at a random moment, you have to know the number (roughly) from memory. Do you?

I know by memory my checkcount on iCM starts with 12 at the moment, so it's somewhere between 12k and 13k. Don't know more exact than that. But that number includes shorts, episodes, whatever is on iCM. No idea how many features I've seen. Have to filter my IMDb ratings.

The number doesn't change very often, so I usually know. If I ever reach 10,000, maybe I'll start rounding to the nearest 1000.
