Got my first shot of Moderna yesterday. No nasty side effects, my arm hurts a little and I've been sleepy. Was also hungry as a horse after taking the shot. :D

I'm a little jealous of you guys with no side effects... I'm feeling substantially better today, but still weak and with a headache that comes and goes (bending my head down is sure to hurt). My arm is nowhere near as sore this time around as it was the first time.

Pretty good, but not as funny as the NYC government guidelines on safe sex during the pandemic.

The one week average for cases per million in Canada has now exceeded the US. I assume (same with the article) that it is because of the vaccine distribution. To call Canada's vaccine distribution pathetic is an understatement.

I just love the psychology of this headline:

This article - while not well-sourced and such - still is worrisome:

In Brazil, an alarmingly high number of babies and children are dying of Covid-19
While government data from Brazil suggest that over 800 children under age 9 have died of Covid-19, an expert estimates that the death toll is nearly three times higher.
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/latino/bra ... 9-n1264231

Have to wonder what this has to do with local variants (which don't stay local). Also wonder about this same situation in other developing states where the local response in limited. Yes, India's recent rise in infections is worrisome, but they have been doing relatively better in terms of deaths (reported, of course). There too deaths have increased. I truly hope this isn't going to be some new phase.

Vaccinate the planet!

Wow. I was talking to my best friend yesterday just about random stuff, and her mother actually believes that COVID has been fabricated by every government on the planet in order to exert control over civilian populations. She also believes that she will contract COVID by getting a COVID test done (she thinks the nasal swabs have been planted with COVID in order to infect people; never mind that this is at direct odds with her other conspiracy belief that it doesn't even exist).
All this came about in conversation because both she and my friend's father are very sick right now and have both refused the vaccine. Ugh.

My conspiracy nan believes that COVID is an experiment in control as well. And that the vaccine is just a tracker. I figured she just believed that kind of stuff because we don't have COVID here but I guess conspiracies are everywhere lol

The funniest take I've seen is that the covid swab test reaches an organ in your brain responsible for hormone distribution and everyone's hormones will be fucked up. I think it was the Hypothalamus. If you look at photos of where it is, it is literally inside the skull you can't reach it LOL. I had to delete 2 people from facebook that I was close with in the past because of their covid bullshit.

I'm guessing they mean the pituitary, the gland right underneath the hypothalamus, it's responsible for storing and releasing a lot of different hormones, and produces a few (the hypothalamus produces some too, but they're all stored in the pituitary, IIRC). You reach the pituitary by sticking a knitting needle through your head from ear to ear and another right between the eyes. Where the two intersect is where the pituitary is located. And yes, it's above the nasal cavity.

Got the first shot Monday and like Ebby, can't tell if I feel crappy because of it or all the other stuff going on. The one odd thing is tenderness under the arm where I did NOT get the shot.

Anyway, not really worth worrying about - better just find an Aamir Khan movie I haven't seen yet.

We were getting daily reports in the 100 - 200 range for the entire state so boom, relax restrictions and set deadline for kids to go back to school, etc. Now cases are varying with 200 on the weekend (usually reported on Monday), quickly followed by the upper 400 - 500s. I won't be surprised if we're back in 1000s by mid-April.
Yesterday we reported 989 cases. Today it's 993. Was just curious how long it took to get an order of magnitude increase. Now we can see.

At least it's not India ... 😢

Anyway, I have to wonder: this seems an awful lot like someone fearing that control over the flock might shift away. Heaven forbid people use their minds to think about things. It just boggles my mind. "The vaccines are too new - I plan to wait and see how it goes." and "I'm concerned about the side effects." -- those are excuses/reasons I can understand.

Couldn't agree more.

Status update: my friend texted me a little while ago that her father is in the hospital and is indeed COVID positive. He's having cognitive problems, among other things. I sent my sympathies back of course and I hope he'll recover, but man am I glad I'm fully vaccinated. I just saw my friend yesterday (not sure when she was last around her parents) and my subsequent biweekly test that I have to do for work came back negative, so I'm grateful for that at least. Probably won't be seeing my friend for ~10 days though now since she's not vaccinated.

Are the cognitive problems Covid related? I've kind of lost track of some of the less frequent problems that seem to crop up with this disease. UGH! Please let us know how it goes. I sure hope he'll be okay and you're friend will "see the light". I'm actually kind of curious how people who are hesitant to vaccinate react when confronted with the disease up close and personal. Have read some stories of how that was enough to change their minds, but I tend to wonder if those are the only stories that hit the press (for fairly obvious reasons). Reading a report for Oregon in the last couple of days, I was pleasantly surprised to see that 4 in 5 over 65s recover though clearly the risk goes up the older the patient gets. Still, there is cause for hope. Will be thinking good thoughts for everyone involved!

It's going to be interesting to see what happens when vaccines plateau. Honestly, I'll be surprised if we make 60% without resorting to a combination of employer and school requirements. I'm looking at demographic information to see how this process goes. If I understand correctly, the Dakotas actually have a fairly high rate of vaccination (in a short time frame no less) even after being in relative denial for so long. If I understood that correctly - and I might not - that means there isn't necessarily a line from point A to point B to point C. If so, then I wonder what makes the difference.

WA is going into a 3 day lockdown from midnight. Some people who had been at a quarantine hotel tested positive. My mum messaged me while I was at uni saying we're probably going into lockdown and to get to shops asap if I needed stuff. I did go to the shop to pick up a couple of things once I'd finished and I could see a few people stocking up on toilet paper but it wasn't crazy yet. They only just announced the lockdown tho. Wasn't planning on leaving the house this weekend so doesn't really affect me but hopefully no new cases and it goes back to normal again.

It was kind of funny though because a few hours ago I got a uni email saying that all COVID restrictions would be lifted for semester 2 (basically only restrictions were class size limits and no in-person lectures). I wonder if they'll cancel that now.

Yeah, it doesn't affect me either. I'm not sure why it's only 3 and not 7 days this time. Seems like a ploy to avoid closing schools. It all basically makes no difference to me; I wasn't expecting to be back at work until Tuesday anyway.
