Thinking about creating an app for tracking all sorts of stuff

Hi everyone,

I use ICM because I love tracking movies, but I am also interested in tracking things I have done or things I own, managing my collections, and so on. I like using apps/websites for those things, but however, every app or service seems to focus on one specific topic (movies, video games, books, music, countries visited, sport activities, and many more).
Being a software developer, I am now thinking of building a web-based app, where you can track everything that’s important to you, and experience the progress you make with all sorts of things that matter in your life.

I do not want to build a competing service such as ICM, but a complementary one. ICM or similar apps are great for managing the specific collection / trackings (such as movies), with a lot of benefits for the user that are related to movies. In the new app, the tracked list might be present as well, but the focus would be on everything that is common across keeping track of all sorts stuff in your life.

For example, I am thinking of gamification elements like a tracking counter which benefits from every tracking the user adds, maybe some sort of online diary that can be derived from your tracking history, or a generic bucket list, a lot of ideas come to mind…
To make using the app/website as simple as possible, the user should be able to import existing trackings / collections automatically from other services.

Now I have a question: If such a service existed, would it be interesting for you?
If yes, what kind of features would be decisive for you to use such an app?
What types of things / collections / items / etc would you track (or are currently tracking)?

I appreciate your feedback, because I am currently trying to find out if the idea of such an app is interesting for others. In this case, it makes sense to pursue the idea and start thinking about the next steps…

Thank you!

Michael

I think such a site would only be beneficiary if it somehow can automatically combine and integrate all the data from all other sites/apps people use to keep track stuff off, if it's another site I have to full-in the data it won't appeal to me at all.

Hi,

I agree, but indeed the idea would be that all data already entered on other sites could be automatically imported into the new site!

Importing is indeed the least thing that necessary. I was thinking one step further. It would be most awesome if checking something on iCM automatically gets tracked on your app. Otherwise it would be yet another place where I should go to hit a button after watching a movie. When I watch a movie, I go to four different places (IMDb, iCM, Criticker and Moviemeter). What would be the reason for me to use another app? It has to have something new. Combining multiple things you track might be something that attracts people indeed, because it's different from other apps/sites, but if it's just an addition, it's just another place to hit a button unless that is done automatically. Not sure if that's technically possible or even allowed.
