What happened to your previous mobile phone?

#1

Post by Armoreska » June 9th, 2019, 3:02 pm

So I was watching a fairly recent docu about throwaway gadgets, and they interviewed people asking this question, and most of the ones shown had trashed it after an upgrade. Which is pretty ridiculous to me.
(I lost my previous phone bout 15 years ago, and received my current cell phone as a hand me down gift; still using every other mobile device I bought since then: media player, used glitchy reader, tablet and audio player)

PS If you kept it as a backup but this replaced the previous backup and you got rid of it, then vote as what happened to that 3rd device

My last one fell somewhere in a lake out of my back pocket -- had to get a new one. The one before that was gifted to my niece, since it was an upgrade for her.

Still have mine. No resale value on it whatsoever so I kept it as a backup phone.

My last one was a Windows Phone, so it simply got outdated as they weren't making any apps for it. But I still have as it is filled with xbox games

Have some of them, sold some of the others. I usually keep my last one until I know I’m satisfied with my new one and then sell it, but I still haven’t sold my last one.

I used an aftermarket charging cord and bricked it (tip: spend the extra cash on a branded charging cord). It's now in a box somewhere.

I still have my first. A Motorola Digiflip. Started using it in 1996.

Don't think the batteries can take more recharges though.

I kept my previous two phones. One of them is a smartphone which had been already used for a while by my mom when she gifted it to me (she had bought herself a better one).

My "current" phone is an old Sony Ericsson T610 from around 2004 or so. I still have it in a moving box somewhere, I'm sure. Haven't used it since around 2007. Before that I had a Philips Ozeo (~2000) and I'm just not sure what happened to it. I guess I threw it out?

I just ordered a new phone, an iPhone 8 (64 GB). When I was in a store a few days ago and showed my current phone, the guy actually laughed at me. My current phone is an 8 GB iPhone 5. He said those things wouldn't last longer than 4 years max. I've got mine 6 years.

That was my latest phone upgrade too - from an iPhone 5 (well, specifically an iPhone 5c) that I got in mid-2014, lasted 4.5 years until I got an iPhone 8 this past January. Around December last year, my 5c all of a sudden couldn't reliably hold a charge and rapidly became unusable, pretty much.

What's wrong with it?
1. I'm running out of space much quicker these days, even though I did a factory reset a few months ago. So I have to be extremely selective in which apps I install. I already removed Plex, because it took too much space.
2. I'm stuck at iOS 10 (10.3.3). I don't get anything newer than that.
3. Because of point 2 several apps won't update to the latest version, because it's not compatible with iOS 10.
4. I've got two apps that I like to use, that don't work at all anymore because of the outdated iOS.

Or did you mean general what's wrong with iPhone that it only lasts 4 years? Blame Apple's business model for that.

Ah yes built-in shelf life. Apple are probably the best at forcing people to upgrade. A consumerist nightmare.

I hate consumerism, but I'm stuck. I'm too fond of iPhone.

With a basic Nokia, I understand you can do 12 years with it. My brother is using something like that as well. He bought his first mobile phone 17-18 years ago and he's still using his second phone ever. It's possible if you're happy with only calls and text-messages.

To be fair, it's not Apple who invented such "business model", it's been there for a long time already. All the others do exactly the same... I've read "conspiracy" theories claiming modern TVs are "pre-programmed" to last not more than 5 years.

I also heard a story about this guy who wanted to test the running shoes under warranty (don't remember the brand, probably Adidas or Nike), he basically wore them out completely, but they held up and disintegrated on the next day after the warranty expired

But this is all part of the bigger problem whereby the corporations don't want us to repair anything at all... just throw the old one in the bin and buy the new one... need to keep that business growing and shareholders happy...

But the millenials are a bit more enlightened. And much more waste-oriented. So hopefully that will change.

The problem is with companies that just sell phones, as they need to keep selling phones even if there's no need for more in the market.

Other companies, like Sony, can go another route, as they have so many things they sell.

Well. I guess they will need to adapt and get into new markets, look at Philip Morris, they saw tobacco sales drop massively so went into the food market... diversification is key, things can change very quickly! And this has been often pointed out as a major concern for Apple specifically since they rely too much on the iPhone.. if those phones are no longer selling they can suddenly be in a quite bad situation.. others, like Samsung, have a lot of other sectors to compensate for that, but Apple currently does not.
