Manchester United have sacked Mourinho who i never liked or thought suitable as manager. Now they make another massive error in appointing Solskjaer as interim manager and he has no record of success in England as manager , this means they are in effect writing off 3 seasons as a new manager in the summer would need more than a year. They should have had a new permanent manager lined up now .

As a big United fan who watches all games they play I am 1ctually happy they gave Solskjaer a chance. It's someone who can recount what it felt like playing for an attacking and successful united team. It really is a case of style and attitude before results now.

Mark Hughes was also a great player, but not manager. Same for Ryan Giggs and previously Sir Bobby Charlton and many others. But we will see. I have been not able to watch them under Mourinho due the boring style of play.

I heard today that Mourinho was paid £18 million a year and is getting a £15 million pay off. For what, telling men roughly where to stand on a pitch every week? God, the football industry is such a racket. I can't stand hearing statistics like this when people are literally living on the streets this Christmas.

Football is like a fantasy land funded by massive tv revenues and massive foreign investments. It will get worse so top players will get over a million pounds a week. As long as people pay it will keep going. People paying for that want entertainment and don’t care enough about people on the streets really.

The industry is the one that should be held to account. They get massive investment but it should be monitored and used properly, with much more spent on their social responsibility budgets.

Well, the evident question is why you even care about it. I can't imagine why someone would ever pay for it. But it's very subjective of course.

One could argue also about the inflated sums the top actors are getting, isn't that the same thing? Or bankers? Or corporate executives? Sure, some of them work harder than the others, but still the sums are crazy... the folks living on the streets don't go to watch football and don't subscribe to inflated SKY packages. The ones that do are the root cause of the problem...

heh, fair enough :) Unfortunately this is the world we live in and we are all responsible for it one way or the other, by our need for entertainment, buying stuff we can actually do without, falling victim to commercialism and peer pressure - the list goes on. It's always easy to criticise others, but we also need to look at what we can do ourselves even though for the most part it always seems like we cannot influence anything..

Forget politics, football is no a matter if life and death it is much more important than that according to late Bill Shankly. Manchester United transformed under Solskjaer have sensationally beaten Arsenal at the Emirates in the F A Cup and looked a class above Arsenal. Surely he should be the permanent Manager.

I guess the simple reason is all these people reach millions with their decisions every week. Society values their input.

The typical pub conversation goes that all the money should go to doctors and teachers. Well if you want to funnel money to the educated middle classes go for it. The conversation never includes working class professions like people who ensure we have clean water and electricity, roofs over our heads and take our rubbish away.

I get annoyed at the way the word banker is constantly thrown around in a lazy way. Most people working in banks don't make very much money, and banks have created astonishing amounts of wealth. Some top executives at RBS and some of the subprime lenders like New Century and American Freedom in the states made appalling decisions and should be in jail. But in general banking has created the conditions for human civilisation and prosperity (prop desks in investment banks less so). The government of the people deregulated them and there wasn't a single complaint. And all the people who took out loans and credit cards they knew they couldn't afford, from every bracket of society, they didn't want to look inwards, no-one did. So yeah bankers are to blame for everything...

My salary is just under £60k, which is around what a head teacher at an academy school in the UK makes (in UK this is just round the boundary between 1st and 2nd decile wages). Their decision making is affecting around 250 young lives at anyone point in time. I work in the finance sector and I generate strategic investment ideas for a client base which has assets of over 1 trillion pounds. These people are reading my high level ideas. Every time I write a white paper I'm trying to suggest to them one way or the other that they mobilise much more of their capital to clean energy, and in general to more socially responsible companies. Who is effecting more lives?

I understand the concern about the homeless, but let's not believe money is inefficiently allocated in our society. We have homeless simply because most people don't want to help them. A typical conservative, which many people are at heart, sees a homeless person as someone who has stopped trying, and they've got no time for them.

Also as Nietzche once pointed out, westerners also value master morality. I have met truly virtuous people, and none of them have ever been amongst the valued of society, in fact they are treated as the unclean of society, they are unloved and unnoticed. Footballers are young and strong and fit and crafty, and these are primary western values. There are a set of values that people say they believe in, the old Christian values, but when they vote with their feet it's a different result. We operate a profoundly hypocritical society.

I'm all for this stuff being reexmained, but it's not a mistake, it's not a failure of the system, it's a reflection of our beliefs. If people want something else go be politically active, better than that be morally active, be moral examples. But don't spend too much time blaming those who give the people what they want. If teachers earned bankers wages, all the bankers would become teachers, they go where the money goes, the money goes where society wants it to go.

I do actually have a mate who loves football, but has stopped paying for Sky TV as a protest at how much footballers get paid, an action I support, I like football but have never and will never pay for Sky TV.

This is a very good and valid point, but I guess a lot has to do with the morals of the people in question. I mean personally I have no problem with people being rich, the only question is how they made that money. In the end each person knows what they have done so it's their personal choices that they have to live with. I'm certainly not a communist advocating to redistribute and give free shit to everyone. I'm just sometimes questioning some of the practices that we have seen and they still continue - e.g. high level executives being personally responsible for bankrupting a firm, ruining the lives of thousands of people and what "punishment" they get? A fat bonus and a golden parachute... oh well, if people are fine with that who are we to comment

Did United do anything though ? Seems to me it was mostly PSG self-destructing again.
