The camera breaks two months ago because my mother was careless with it (we split 50/50 for the cost since we both use it). It was under warranty, but they ran out of parts, and the camera model, so we just got a refund and I had to throw in more money with her to buy a more expensive model. I went to her house while she was at work to record everything for my next 2 videos. I then use my sd card to usb adapter to transfer stuff. It would keep stopping at random intervals, and then I get a message that says invalid ms-dos function. It then stops working completely. Disk Management doesn't even detect it, but when I removed it from the usb port the usb input got loose lol. I could go to her place today while she's working, but traveling for 45 minutes during a stay at home lockdown to be there for 2 minutes seems like a waste of time. I ordered another adapter and I will visit her this weekend anyways since I'm vaccinated, but if the sd card broke during the process then I think I'm gonna give up with youtube and video games, sell my recently acquired collection and go back to movies and tv shows.

Nah, dude, the lesson is to not share your camera with others. Take what you can get out of it and buy your own cheaper stuff. Hell, you can use one of these newfangled cell phones nowadays, they all seem to come with a camera.

We split 50/50 on a $1000 camera since we both wanted a fancier one. Turns out the 2nd thing that broke was just the sd card to usb adapter when I went to her place while she was at work. All my footage was still ok. Did my video today :)

Guess it was just an overreaction on my part.

So you spent $500 on half a camera and $600 on an outfit? I obviously haven't seen your outfit, but I think I would've gone with $1000 for the camera and $100 for some sort of outfit. Then you'd have the same camera all to yourself and spend less on an outfit that you might only use once. But then, I don't have a youtube channel and know jack about both cameras and outfits.

Got the outfit way before the camera. Wanted to show my face on the outfit video, but I figured I should have practice first. The outfit will be fantastic for cosplaying at video game events here at least, so there's some more use to it.

The project is gonna be way too ambitious lol my estimate is that it will be 5-6 hours long, but it actually isn't that bad if you think about it. One guy did a 3.5 hour video on one game in the series, and that video has 5 million views. 5-6 hours to talk about all 30 games in the series isn't that ridiculous in comparison.

Oh, it's for that project - got it! Well, if it's multi-use, it's not wasted money, imho.

I've got 9 games left, but when the outfit comes in I'll start filming. Best case is 9-10 months more of work though.

people say i have to post here.

I feel a bit confused. I used to love stormchasing in Belgium, but I failed in continuing to pursue that interest, mostly because 1. i fucked up in terms of social dynamics and 2. i constantly move from one interest to the other, and can not settle on making one thing my passion and i hate it.

But fine... i made some friends, i lost them as well. One of those friends was a very talented girl who was younger than me, who I knew when she was 12-13-14 years old... We spoke a lot against each other on twitter, met in a town in my area a few times (probably around 5). But i lost touch with her when she was in puberty, and also i was a bit too old for her (i'm 5 years older). I just wanted to look her up on Facebook and i can't find her (i think she blocked me... but it must've been a long time ago).

I was surprised what happened if i look her up on the internet. She is a photographer, also works as one. She is already 20 years old. She is a model as well, which I didn't expect her ever to become. It feels so weird, and she is part of a stormchase team with many people i used to be friends with (just the best of the best), but which i fucked up due to my mental issues.

It somehow hurts because I know i could've been part of this, or that she still could've been a friend of me... I feel like my life is full of disappointments and that I literally fucked up everything because of stupid things i've done when i was like 15-16 years old.

I cannot see what life can offer me to me... especially in Belgium. I just don't see it.

Now to be honest... it's a lot of prestige, it's very professionally done, but the last two - three years barely had any thunderstorms in Western Europe, let alone Belgium, and those years were very disappointing (covid also probably made things more difficult for them).

At the other hand, it seems like everything is about prestige, performing, becoming someone who has to be recognized... but not about being genuine and mundane against each other, while pursuing whatever you want to do... It seems like we're all lost, and forget what life is really about.

Something feels really wrong... It's like i'm literally a parasite on our planet. Ironically we've been struck by a virus, but I might be the virus itself.

I want to leave all of this behind and i can't. I want to be meaningful again, but in a way that is meaningful to me and not to others. It feels like everything is so toxic nowadays. Something feels so wrong in our society.

In some sense, it feels like all those documentaries i've seen have literally influenced me. I'm partly Grizzly Man, i'm partly the penguin of Encounters at the End of the World, i feel like The King of Kong also tells such an interesting story about what i suffer with (and all of us actually, contest about watching movies instead of playing the king of kong) and also that banksy movie was very interesting. (what is real art, and what is not real art, but how can it be distinguished and our drive to be meaningful again).

She is also a look-a-like from a WTFock actress (belgian teenager/young adult coming-of-age tv series). She looks exactly like her.

Hey laki, since you were hoping for more responses, yep that sounds like society in a nutshell. It does suck that we can't all just get along, have our basic needs met, and spend our time pursuing our passions, but unfortunately that doesn't seem to be how our species organizes itself, at least at this point. If you don't want to be miserable, you have to play the game a little bit -- even while recognizing its utter asininity -- or have a really rare personality type that's easily contented and truly doesn't give a fuck about society's opinions and expectations (e.g. the Dude).

As for your friend, plenty of fish in the sea, as they say.
i'd rather want to be homeless than do something i don't want to
This just smacks of privilege and egoism, though. 99 out of 100 people (at the bare minimum) don't spend most of their life doing what they really want to do (even if many end up finding fulfillment in unexpected places), why would you expect to be the exception -- especially if you haven't put in the work to arrange your life so that you can do what you want to with your life?

Do they have app-based food delivery services like postmates or uber eats in Belgium? If you can get yourself a bike, that's a great way to earn some money and be as antisocial as you want, as long as you can walk into the restaurants and pick up the food, then drop it off to the customer. A number lot of homeless people here work jobs like that to earn meals. And if you enjoy exploring different corners of urban/suburban sprawl, it's hard to think of a better gig.

I've just had my debit card (which I use for almost all payments) blocked for the second time in a month (and third time in a year). Each time because of attempted fraudulent transactions (this time someone tried to buy a subscription of some sort from Amazon Prime France!). I asked if there was anything I could do to protect myself from this and was literally told "there's nothing you can do" other than use something like ApplePay, but since I don't have a smartphone... and perhaps avoid gas stations where it seems to be more prevalent.

Apparently there's a surge in card fraud, especially in New Mexico. Which was interesting because I assumed my "exposure" came from online purchases but that wouldn't be geographically specific, so it seems that somewhere I physically shop is compromised.

If you sit around and hope good things will happen, good things are definitely not going to happen. No one "deserves" a great life. That's all I'll say on that matter.

... Godzilla vs. Kong was shit. This Kong's speech on the matter shall be rather negative.

Yikes, you have my sympathy. Somebody close to me went through the debit fraud thing last year. It's fucking ridiculous.

At least they blocked it preemptively, not like the first time where I had to sign a statement that I indeed didn't purchase $92 shoes from some Adidas store. The most annoying bit is that now I have to update our phone/internet provider payment for the second time this month and they always claim that it'll take a month to go through.

The original probably isn't much better. I have no designs on seeing the remake, but when I saw the 1962 model as a 7 year old I recall commenting to my father that Kong destroyed far more property and portions of the city and likely took out way more civilians vs. Godzilla , who was supposedly the "bad guy". And I was mightily passed that Zilla "lost" in the end, mainly because he was dumped in the drink never to be seen again. My dad commented that Zilla probably hit the ocean floor and just flipped off the unruly humans, saying "to hell with them!" before wandering away to do whatever it is Godzilla does in his off-time. Dads rule. And I was a massive Godzilla fan back in the day. Kong sucks. No offense. :)

Celebrating diversity is also respecting the choices and opinions of others that don't conform to your own.

It's funny how pretty much everybody loves to whine about society, when society is little more than a proxy for "everyone". I think, even more so in this age, with so much information available, our brain loves to focus on the negative. And when viewing society through the lens of the internet, yes, it may appear pretty dire. My personal experience is that once you step out into the real world, most people are way more lenient and accepting of what you do and who you are, as long as the courtesy is returned. I'm pretty antisocial myself and often have conflicting opinions with people around me, yet I've never had much trouble fitting in and finding places where I feel comfortable.

Living in a society means compromising with the people that occupy the same space as you do, so there's always going to be a little give and take. Other than that, you are free to do what you want and how you want to live your life in your personal space. If you don't feel at home in this society, I suggest you find out what the bare minimum amount of interaction with the outside world is so people leave you be, and spend all your other energy building a world around you filled with the people and things you appreciate. I'm not saying you should become a shut-in, rather avoid unnecessary friction and focus on the things that you love. And be open to people who love the same things as you or think about things the same way as you do.

Societal pressure is often self-induced (other than a handful of ground rules, like having to go to school, work, pay taxes, ...).

Also, you have to appreciate the irony that you complain about prestige, performance and recognition on a forum of a website that turned watching movies into a sport B)

Whoa cool writeup.
Funny I was into this "sport" way before I met any "competitors" and even before I found the interwebz. The first ones I did were the mysterious "top 1000" on IMDb.

Btw laki, not to read into the fact that you haven't replied, but I hope you don't take any of this as a personal attack when you're already going through a hard time. I can actually empathize more than you know with feeling like I want to do what I love or do nothing at all, and have spent long periods of my life stagnant as a result. Just my two cents based in personal experience that you really do have to get up, get out, and get something, as the song says, if you want to escape that downward spiral, even if it's not something you like doing. Or as Inspectah Deck's mom would say, working hard can help you maintain, to learn to overcome the heartaches and pain.

Gah. Just had to drive across the city to do something i didn't really want to do, got halfway down the street before I realized that the marathon is today and half the streets were closed off and detours everywhere. Now I feel like throttling someone, and in 3 hours I have to do something else I'm not looking forward to. This has not been a relaxing Sunday...

It probably doesn't help, peeps, because I'm replying over 12 hours later (!) but was it not possible to park somewhere and walk?

Yea, it's water under the proverbial bridge now, sol, but it would have been a far walk. Normally ~10min drive, 45 minute walk, and wound up taking me ~25 minutes to drive because of the road closures. This was for a task that took all of 15 minutes for me to deal with. Eh, it's over...

My continuing complaint has to do with this chronic, SEVERE insomnia that I've been having for the past 3 months. I thought it was due to one particular stressor, but that issue resolved itself about 6 weeks ago and the sleeplessness continues. I think it's due to age without getting tmi. Over the last 48 hours I've gotten 4 hours of sleep.

When you add an emoticon by clicking on it, spaces are automatically included. So if you type out a sentence, end with a period/question mark/whatever, add a space and then click on an emoticon, you have two spaces instead of one. It actually doesn't show in your post, but you'll notice the extra space if you quote that post. Well, at least I do. :pinch:

I never knew this. :o
And I never thought about it. I automatically end with a space when I want to do something more. Then I grab my mouse and click on an emoji. I never realized the horror I caused that way. I'll certainly try to think about it from now on. ;)

Well, sometimes these relatively low-level stressors can sneak up on us - they might seem like background noise, but they still can have a gnawing effect. Sorry to read about the insomnia: I wouldn't be surprised if it's a common complaint these days. I've read headlines about an uptick in various forms of mental and emotional ill-health.

Then there are life's little aggravations ... :circle: Wish we could make those go away!

Lack of sleep is no joke! My hope is you're able to find something that helps you get across this rough patch. :)

Think of it this way - you've only got 33,000 odd posts to check for an extra space here and there. Or not. My hope is you choose the latter. :P

It's kind of funny though. I noticed this a long time ago and mostly try to avoid the extra space. It seems pretty obvious that the system eliminates extra spaces from the end of posts, even when we click preview or switch from the quick entry form at the bottom of a page to the full entry form. I only notice that because I'm typing and decide I want the buttons to drop in code rather than relying on getting that right too.

I'm surprised the underlying code doesn't strip out extra spaces, but then again, storage is relatively cheap these days. Still. Wonder how many terrabytes on all the computers around the planet are nothing more than an extra space or two?

whoa: that's interesting. I added extra spaces between words to the end of my prior paragraph and while they display in the entry form, they are stripped out of the preview. Now I have to see what happens when I hit submit! What's the emoji for suspense?!?

edit: yep, sho'nuff. The extra spaces aren't displayed on the site, but they still exist in the text I entered. Now to decide if this is a good thing or the end of civilization as we know it. (Seems my extra space before my emoji also gets stripped out of the display text!)

Lemme drain all mystery out of this: it happens because multiple spaces in HTML get converted into a single space. ;) Posts get converted from BBCode to HTML by the forum's engine, which doesn't process multiple spaces because - why bother? Browsers will do that anyway.

I've got the opposite problem with CFS. I could get 48 hours of sleep in four hours and it still wouldn't be enough.

same here - right now, I just need to sleep for a couple of days. Until I do, my physical pain won't be controllable. :(

Thanks, guys... usually when this happens I wind up crashing after 2-3 days, but my work schedule generally precludes sleeping past 5am. Blegh.

And sorry xianjiro and kong for your trouble with cfs. That's no picnic from what I understand...
