Shocking surprise at Flanders. That's the first win in the man's pro career.

Yes, quite an upset. I was very impressed by MvdD as well, especially because this happened earlier:

Bettiol was a surprise, but was very strong on the Kwaremont and had great support from Vanmarcke. Langeveld blocked effectively behind, QS style.
Strongest guy in the race was like MvdP: the crash, chase, activity and sprint to 4th.

Blunder by Alaphilippe here imo, should've just gone to the finish with Fuglsang in his wheel, and (most likely) beat him there. But maybe he already felt he was at the end of his powers.

Edit: Probably the greatest plot twist of the decade in cycling (and maybe in sports?)

Viviana deviated from his line a lot and he clearly hindered Moschetti; actually a straightforward decision.

Anyway, Roglic and Yates are in top form: it should be a great duel that is to come.

Has something like this happened before? All potential winners giving up 11 spots to non-GC riders, after already taking the lead?

Such a big group is quite unusual I guess, but I don't think the GC riders have anything to worry about, the differences are quite small. I remember the peloton giving a group of about 10 riders more than 30 minutes in the 2001 Tour de France. Kivilev was one of them and almost made it onto the podium at the end.

I see. I suppose he actually is on the final podium now.
Here Le Monde awarded him the victory:
http://contre-pied.blog.lemonde.fr/2012 ... puis-1999/

François Simon from that breakaway also finished 6th then originally.

Armstrong/Ullrich were 24th/27th with a gap of 35 minutes to O'Grady and 13 to Kivilev.

looks safe for Roglic from now on.

Top 10 looks even more surreal now bc Roglic is #2 but from the rest of it only Amador is a GC rider, altho Movistar seemingly has Landa and Carapaz for that position.

As expected, the race peaked on weekend #3, not #4. I don't recall the favorites letting an underdog go so easily... this must be a first.
This is exactly why you don't let a favorite's team's 2nd man go into a breakaway.
