wow Matthews took him to the ropes. Hung on by just 5 seconds. Matthews could have won his 1st GC too.

Looks like Vuelta is the most interesting, closest GT for another year (8th in a row? (OK 2012 had a fantastic Giro but still Vuelta had one up)).
Lagos de Kowabunga always delivers.

And there's a more or less 5-way battle for KOM going on

Funny that Kruygjswiyjck still has 0 wins at grand tours. (reminds me of Haimar Zubeldia)
Tomorrow possibly last real chance to make a dent in Yates. Did he cook it right this time?
Although Saturday's stage predisposes to another runaway a-la Froome at the Giro.

His name giving you trouble? He actually only has two pro wins total. He is a typical Rabobank development team product: they produced solid stage racers that are rather poor in the winners department (think also Gesink, Mollema and Kelderman).

Right, Kelderman is also pending a win, but he's never almost won a grand tour.

Kelderman mostly gets beaten by his own fragility. If everything falls together for once he might just be a contender, for now he is not unlike Porte.

There are 4 Brit riders in PCS top 100. 3 of them are now grand tour winners and one is a brother. The next best is Hugh Carthy at 162 with Teo G Hart close behind.
This I suppose is the first time that 3 people from the same nation have held all GT crowns.

I wonder if tomorrow is going to be the queen stage. Guess it depends on whether everyone is not fine with how things stand.

ah no. Belgium was first in 1977:
Van Impe, Maertens, Pollentier
Even more oddly, that's the only GT win for all of them

24 race days in junior UCI races, 20 victories, and then I'm not counting all the local races he's won. His speciality is attacking from the start and finishing minutes ahead of everyone else. I've heard rumours that a race organiser once asked him to "slow down" because the peloton was too far behind and otherwise they would have needed to take them out of race and he'd be the only one left on the circuit.

He won the European Championships almost 10 minutes ahead of number two, after a solo of 100k in a race of only 118k  He was supposed to turn professional next year in Merckx's Hagens Berman team and make to jump to QuickStep in 2020, but after Team Sky (supposedly) offered him an insane 5-year contract, QS immediately reeled him in for 2019. The guy is 18 and he has own transfer soap opera. World Championships start next week, he wanted to start and win in the under-23 category, but he was denied by the UCI. Now he has to start in the under-19 category.

Like this, QS will easily get to 100 victories next year

Really really curious to see where this will go. I don't think there's ever been an U19 rider who so dominated his category. Then again, born January 2000, he is one of the oldest there, and "only" some months younger than some outstanding U23 riders (yesterday's U23 winner Bjerg is barely a year older). With his time today he would've been 4th in the U23 category 44" behind Bjerg but of course Evenepoel was forced to use a smaller gear today.

People have always criticized films like Nasu: Andalusia no Natsu of having not-so-realistic plots and race situations. They may have to revise that opinion after Evenepoel's win today :D

That's one up on Mohoric junior silver+gold in the same year.
Is there a list of double man winners in the same year? (pretty common for women i guess)

Remco now holds 6 junior championships (country, continent, world). That's a first I'm sure in any age group, or gender.

Evgeni Petrov of Russia is the only other male who managed to do the double before (U23 in 2000). In women's racing it's more common indeed: Jeannie Longo as elite in 1995 and four others in the junior category.

Mohoric of course took another gold a year later in the U23 category. Maybe Remco can try and do the same?

Isn't he skipping the U23 altogether? He's turning pro in January, so I guess that means he'll be doing the WC with the pros too?

He's turning pro, but if he wants, he can still do the World Championships with the U23 next year (or the next four years). As long as you're under 23 and you haven't raced with the pros at the Championships yet, it's all good. Similarly we have pros like Bjorg Lambrecht and Jai Hindley racing today.

Well, it wasn't the most exciting race, but there was quite some action from the Gnadenwald(?) onwards 90/95k from the end with plenty of riders trying to anticipate. But when Anna VdB went, it was all over: Not even a single response in the peloton.

I quite enjoyed the race, but the suspense for the win was all over after that climb 35k from the end. Staggering ride from Van der Breggen.

Van Vleuten, the other pre-race favorite, finished the race at 7 with a fractured knee.

The break had 19 minutes. I wonder how long will it take to reel in. (Rob Britton FTW?)

15 minutes after 3 climbs...
6 to go. That's 2.5 minutes per lap/climb.

9-40 with 5 to go, so all good

Peter is done. :(

The race is on with 70 to go.

It won't be Yates or Kwia or Dan Martin or Lopez. And prolly not Roglic who crashed.
