Bit of a lackluster finish to a pretty good Tour, which they couldn't do much about given the conditions but still... obviously as a Pinot fan, that was just hard to stomach. Bernal is the kind of rider I would like to be enthusiastic about, but I can't with that team... Bardet getting the polka dots is kind of funny given the circumstances, but I guess that's what happens when no one is interested in it.

Sagan casually beating Zabel's record btw. he could win 4 more, wouldn't be surprising to anyone.

Huge success for Movistar as they got the only thing that truly matters to them: the team classification.

Who wins tomorrow ? I'd guess Groenewegen.

Alaphilippe will definitely win the "supercombatif" award.

Someone won something yellow yesterday, but there were also other interesting cycling championships:
MvdP won the European Championship in MTB; the field was missing some big riders, but still another good win.
Neff won the women's title.

BMX world championships Men Elite had a spectacular final with Van Gendt leading the entire race and some big crashes influencing all other riders.
A much more clean race for the Women Elite saw Willoughby winning the title.

True. Weird that De Gendt has never won it, seems like he could have this year if he'd made more of a concerted effort.

Maybe, but De Gendt also worked hard for Ewan and Wellens, besides riding for his own glory (and with success). He claimed the mountain jersey before (Vuelta last year I think), but I feel that with multiple 2000+m mountains this wasn't the ideal year for him. I don't think he minds very much though, Lotto had a great TdF and de Gendt got a mythical win.

Stages are definitely more important for him, but as you say he's gone for mountain jerseys in other races (Paris-Nice, Catalunya, Romandie and the Vuelta), and he can definitely win it on the Tour in a year where there's not a on-form Barguil going for it or something, like this year. I'm not saying he necessarily should, but I wish he would because I'd like to see it be more competitive.

Youngest rider in the pack, first WT stage ever, Clasica San Sebastian. Dropping off on the second to last climb, returning, bringing water to his team mates, attacking, winning solo.
They're calling him Eddy already :D

This guy...

Hope he won't get compared to Mercx too much but he has it in him to do special things.

Belgium has been in need for a stage rider and Evenepoel already said its his biggest dream to win a TDF. I don't know if that's the best option for him though, he has an insane time trial in his legs but not the build of a Bernal who might just cross off the next 5 tdf's off if things go well for him. On the other hand in the northern classics Belgium has Van Aert for the future and also big competition from van der poel. Very exciting next 10 years for the Benelux for sure.

He is extremely impressive for his age. Difficult to predict how he will develop in terms of racing for grand tour wins. I have my doubt his current team is the best option to develop in that field. However, it is good the see that at the moment the kid actually has freedom to race, go see where he is at and actually win.

Evenepoel became EC time trial champion today. It could've been a tight race (position 2-5 within 2 seconds), but one guy was clearly better than the rest.

Crazy.

Is Bennett going to win Benelux now? 3 sprints taken in a row.

There is still a time trial and the mini-Flanders stage to make up the actual GC-race, today is also a bit more hilly and selective. So Bennett will most likely not win the race.

He lost 15 minutes today so no, he's not winning the Benelux Tour.

In other news Matthieu van der Poel decided to ride a road race again and off course won the opening stage of the Arctic Race of Norway.

Knowing the French they will likely cancel the team time trial for next year to still give Bardet and Pinot a fighting chance.

People love to say that, but it's not particularly accurate really. It's like the old "combative rider is whichever French rider attacked that day": look at the list from recent Tours and you'll see that this is not the case. And even if it were, Pinot is fine with a team time trial anyway (FDJ does fine at them, not as well as Ineos or Jumbo-Visma, but fine).

It is however possible that there's no team time trial next year, but that's because the Tour tends to alternate between having one and not. But I'm sure everyone will say it's all to favor the French, cause that's just how it goes. If ASO was so much about favoring the French, you'd think they'd have managed it in the past 30 years, at least once.

You cannot order a French winner, but you can give them a better chance to remain somewhat competitive. The last years we have seen minimal time trial kilometers and maximum climbing. This trend actually followed the rise of Pinot and Bardet. Maybe coincidental? I think not. We also had at least three stages this year that had Alaphilippe written allover it (that he could do much more this year was unexpected or else the climbing stages might have been shortened beforehand already).

It's hard to have a GT without any stage that favors Alaphilippe at this point, as he's the best puncheur in the world. It's like saying a high altitude mountain stage is "Bernal-friendly", or a sprint stage is "Ewan/Groenewegen-friendly" : it's friendly to whoever is the best on this kind of terrain. The Vuelta is much more Alaphilippe-friendly than the Tour, for that matter.

The decline of time trial in GTs is also visible in the other two GTs, and has more to do with the leveling of the field in the mountains, which leads to smaller gaps there, and thus force organizers to reduce time trials to keep a balance between time trialist and climbers. In the past decade, only three Tour winners have been non-TT specialists (Bernal, Nibali and Schleck), and that's despite TT kilometers being reduced. The Tour organizers, more than anything, want to favor suspense, change, and excitment so they do parcours that don't overtly favour the big favorite. You can expect next year to have much less high-altitude terrain because of this.

2018 Giro: 35 kms of individual time trial, 0 team time trial (35 total)
2019 Giro: 59 kms of individual time trial, 0 team time trial (59 total)

That's not accounting for the difference between hilly or flat time trials (which favor time trial specialists) and cronoscalatas (which favor climbers) btw, which pads out the numbers a bit.

Average for the 2000s : 82.85 kms of time trial
Average for the 2010s: 72.84 kms of time trial

And that's with the pretty freakish 2013-2014 years, pretty sure we're not likely to see that for a long time.

So since the Pinot/Bardet Breaktrough in 2014 only in 2016 the Tour scored better in ITT distance. In 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019 the Tour had less, even less compared with Vuelta. Vuelta keeps it stable around 40 km each year.

Speaking of freakish, the 2015 Tour was GT unworthy with only 13.8 km.
