I think when I joined I didn't know it was so young at the time? Maybe the older-looking interface on iCM made me think the entire thing was older? Anyway I've been here nearly 8 years and I'm still not 30yrs old yet lol

It's funny what you two say about Mods - can't tell you how many boards I've been on where it seems run by someone's ego-trip. Nice not to have to deal with that here.

For how long have we paid?
We pay OVH for hosting annually, so it may go up or down in the future, but as of now we still have a couple of years left before running out of funds (2-3? I should know the exact answer, but I don't. I can look it up if you want). Next renewal is sometime in July, last year's price was $95.88. I believe our server location is Canada.

We bought the domain name for 15 years (since domain names tend to increase rather than drop in price). I think we paid ~$150 for that (so ~$10/year), but I could be wrong. Our domain name hosting company is Gandi (UK).

We also pay a small annual fee (8 EUR) for a backup location (so if the OVH datacenter burns down we have a backup of the database to restore from) with a different company, LiteServerNL. I think the backup is set to update every 24 hours, so we may suffer 1 day's loss of posts.

I'm under the impression that everyone is pretty happy with OVH's performance, so I think we'll be staying here, but if not, I know PeacefulAnarchy has set things up so that they should be fairly "portable" and it should be much less work to move to a different host than the last move out from under the thumb of Zetaboards/Tapatalk.

We've deliberately spread things out a bit so that there's a little more resilience built in. We don't want to end up in a situation where 1 company can hold us hostage (like Zetaboards did).

If you guys want it, I can put together a "transparency report" so you can see how much money we collected, how we've spent the money we've spent and how much is left.

I've been a mod here since I first joined (May 9, 2011 - almost 10 years). Before that I was a mod on another film forum (now long dead) and I was of course part of the first batch of mods on iCM. I suspect experience (both online and IRL) makes a difference.

I don't actually like moderating other people's posts. I don't like interfering with what other people are saying or deleting what they wrote. Unfortunately, you sometimes have to. I think the reluctance to moderate is the reason it once in a while spins out of control here - but I suppose that is kinda sorta the price you pay for not having mods on "ego trips" ? Maybe? We could be more heavy-handed in our moderation, we could have more strict rules and stricter enforcement of them, we could temporarily ban people left and right - but honestly, none of us mods want to. So as long as you guys behave as well as you generally do, there's no need for it and our life as mods is easy. Please do continue to behave, I'm a lazy person, I don't want to have to weed your posts.

Also, I try to notify people when I edit and/or delete posts, so they know what happened and why. People are free to disagree with it (and I'm usually willing to admit that I may be wrong in what I'm doing), but I think that helps people better understand how things are supposed to work, rather than just finding that your posts were edited or are missing and you are banned from a forum without explanation. Sometimes things happen so quickly, though, that I get complaints about complaints while I'm still trying to sort things out and explain to one person why I'm doing what I'm doing and just haven't gotten around to dealing with everything yet. That happened a few weeks ago.

Thirdly, I really try not to moderate a discussion I'm party to. I don't think it's fair if someone gets into an argument with me that I can suddenly pull the banhammer out or delete a post I didn't like. I should not have an "advantage" over another user just because I'm a mod. Well, I guess I do no matter what, because the "moderator" label is right below my name - influencing other people's behavior - and I can "call" on someone else to review something I think crosses the line, but I really try not to abuse my privilege. I get the distinct impression the other mods feel the same way.

We also tend to talk things over a group in the mod/admin section of the site and there are loooong stretches of zero activity there (I know you guys don't have access, you'll just have to trust me on that one). So when we as mods "do something" it's either because we all agree on it or because a mod sees a need to intervene right away.

Wow, this turned into quite the rant. Sorry about that.

OMG - Covid shots turn you green! News at 11!!!

Thanks for the 'rant' - all well-said, good-to-know type info. Everything has pluses and minuses, but I think restraint is often better and appreciate it around here.

Thanks for years of modding, Mods!

Curious that you didn't mention a full disclosure on data requests from law enforcement/government entities to this forum and the actions taken. DID YOU RAT US ALL OUT?!? <_<

I certainly wouldn't ignore an update on our finances, but there's no rush or Freedom of Information Act kind of importance.

I'll see if I can't put something together when I have a little downtime. I appreciate the trust you guys have all shown in us and I don't think it unreasonable that we provide some transparency in return. I actually wanted to do that when we did the whole fundraising thing, but then life happened, we had a bunch of work with the actual forum move and I just didn't think about it much after that. I think you have a right to know how we spent your money and I should've done it sooner.
