Alabama just passed a bill banning abortions, even in cases of rape and incest. Disgusting. It only needs to be made into law with the governor's signature, and she is a firm anti-abortion Republican who has made past statements supporting the outlawing of abortion, with no exceptions for rape/incest. The state rep who proposed this bill (who happens to be a woman) even said it herself, that her goal with this bill is to get one step closer to getting Roe v. Wade turned over. Ugh...

I read that every backer in the state senate was male, which made my blood boil, but its disappointing to hear that it started and will end with a woman.

It's particularly upsetting to see the abortion issue go backwards after the success in Ireland last year.

People who don't believe in abortion: don't get one. It's as simple as that.

How about some sanctions for this backward country? Seems those worked in the case of Brunei...

amen!

Though, and I can't remember if you're American or not, flaiky, so just one thing I'll mention - the fervent anti-abortion people believe they are defending the defenseless - a moral crusade firmly rooted in their fundamentalist evangelical beliefs. It's not about the adults, supposedly, it's about protecting the lives of babies conceived in rape, incest, and by accident from being 'murdered.'

Now if they can only figure out a way to force the parents to be good, caring, loving, nurturing, and happy ... oh, I forget, once the parents accept Jesus as their personal savior ... happily, ever after.

Yeah, just what the world needs, more unwanted children to be abused and miserable wards of the state.

Last, notice that they never once talk about free or freely accessible preventative birth control measures since that would only lead to promiscuity outside of holy matrimony. That's what we call separation of church and state.

The whole American experience can be summarized by my 'education' in fairly rural Oregon:

Middle School: Sex Education: Save sex for marriage, all sex will give you STDs, so just don't do it.

High school: Has a daycare on site because of the absurdly high number of unwanted teenage pregnancies.

 my sex ed teacher in middle school said that if you kiss someone, it's like kissing everyone they've ever kissed before, so don't kiss the slutty girls cuz that's basically like kissing all the boys she's kissed, which is super gay.

Meanwhile in my backwards part of Denmark we were taught (1985 or so) about chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis and were taught about HIV, that there was no known cure, no known treatment (at the time) and that anyone could contract it so the safest option was to always - always! - use a condom. We were even taught how to roll a condom on to a banana (cue much giggling, but it worked). Oh and something about menstrual cycles and pregnancy, but since no-one I knew of got pregnant until after high school it wasn't a big issue.

My brother is a teacher and had to do a sex ed class, not entirely sure how it works in the UK, but it seemed mandatory for all teachers to be trained up for this.

At the time he delivered the class he was a virgin and I think he found it the most awkward and uncomfortable situation he'd ever experienced.

I get it. Iran is a oppressive and shitty country. War is not the answer. The past few decades of bombing the Middle East shows what a disaster that idea is, and they might do that shit again. I agree with this post:

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/20 ... -released/

So.. Donald Trump borrowed money from a bank in 2018 while president. He's a self-proclaimed billionaire, who donates his salary and is "too rich to be corrupt" according to Republicans, but he borrowed 11 million.

Not only that, but he borrowed 11 million to buy a house from his sister, and unsuccessfully used his kid's names to hide the purchase because he owns the controlling company and ended up buying the 11 million dollar mansion for 18.5 million.

To put this in contrast, Carter gave up his family's peanut farm and Obama refused to refinance his house while president because he didn't want to even give the appearance of impropriety.

Trump is so goddamn corrupt. There are going to be uncovering this shit for years. Hillary was obviously by far the less corrupt candidate.

I like Bill de Blasio, but I don't think he stands a chance. I happened to be on the same row as he when we flew from New York to New Mexico, leaving NYC behind. I sat right next to his wife and didn't recognize her right away. It was only when someone went "OMG! I'm a big fan you you guys!" that I looked over and saw him on the other side of the aisle.

Pete released his issues... and it still includes making national service the norm. I thought he would back out of it because of how stupid that is.

Seems Pete doesn't want to limit it to military service though some have questioned on the ongoing viability of our current peacetime recruiting - there's no trouble staffing the infantry, but highly technical positions are another matter.

So here's a question, what's wrong with young people taking a year out between high school and college (or tech school or whatever) to do something like Peace Corps or Americorps? Especially if that service could be used to offset the cost of college? Say, they earn credits when they can then spend a qualified school of their choosing?

I certainly don't feel it's a topic to be dismissed outright - say, like a universal draft into the armed forces.

Pete's a war vet though, so I dunno why he might feel weak in that area.

I do believe that it's a shitty thing, even if it's Peace Corps or Americorps. It still gives the assumption that they'll have to go through bootcamp which employs the whole "listen to people above you and know your place" mentality, which I, and I'm sure many others, can't stand. There will be other people who will be against it in principle. I know you're saying that they're not forced too, but like you mentioned, it might be used to offset the cost of college, or help with employment like Pete said in the past. That's still forcing in a way, if the kids are in a lower class and can't afford the college, especially with the prices in America.

It's also an incredibly cheap tactic. Simply because the people that this affects the most can't vote due to their age, so they have no say in the matter.

Is it true The New York Times has basically endorsed Hillary for President and that she will be running again?. Otherwise known as Madam Cyber Hack from the right wing commentators. If she isn’t does anyone actually want Joe Biden to be President. He is clearly not up to the job, clearly not quite with it, and has baggage. Aren’t you better with the devil you know than him?

Trump has pardoned Conrad Black. He has done many worse things. However this seems the least defensible. Sadly he's not required to defend such decisions.
