He goes in to get a soda, but comes out smelling like a still.
Clue #2:

She puts on her wedding gown, but not just for her husband.

Hm ... nothing springing to mind ...

"Soda," at least, suggests an American film...

I'm sensing the presence of Cary Grant ... Is there a Cary Grant in the audience ...?

Not even a little bit? Say, a cameo, in which the main character visits a studio, and the guide says, "And here's Cary Grant now." And the main character says, "Gosh, Mr. Grant! I'm your biggest fan! Are you working on a movie now?""I sure am, Cindy [I'm guessing the main character's name is Cindy], and it's a swell picture, too! It's about a guy who's down on his luck until he meets the gal who changes everything when she -- well, I'm afraid you're just going to have to see the picture.""I sure will, Mr. Grant!""Well, I better get going. My co-star doesn't like to wait! [Ha ha] It was a pleasure meeting you, Cindy.""Same here, Mr. Grant! ... Gosh, Cary Grant! Wait'll I tell the girls back home!"

Not even a cameo like that?

Nnnnnnope. ;) It is neither silent nor a comedy.

It's on LOTS of lists, and you and Local have seen it. You're the only two who've guessed, so you're the only two names I checked, but I'm certain without looking that most if not all of you will have seen it. (If anyone wants me to look for him/her, I will do so happily.)

Clue #1: He goes in to get a soda, but comes out smelling like a still.
Clue #2: She puts on her wedding gown, but not just for her husband.
Clue #3: Father still has work for him, and Mother wants him!
He may be senseless to such pleas.

If you're still up ... I don't know! I had a few faint glimmerings of ideas, but they died out and I have nothing. My main sense from the things you've said is that these are probably relatively small moments in a big American classic film. Like, The Godfather big even.

Not The Godfather. I don't know if it's as as big as THAT, but...it's BIG.

Tiny side-clue that might actually help forum regulars: I didn't even need to check to know that Kasparius would have seen this film.

New, real clue coming very shortly.

Weren't you surprised the other day that someone disliked that film?

It was you that brought it up the other day, wasn't it?

Also, is it Pearls of the Deep? We all know Kas loves Czech New Wave films.

Yes, I did defend Up in Smoke. But I don't think it's the number one thing people associate with me. I assume the number one thing is me being an asshole.

Too bad you didn't actually...you know...guess it. :whistling:

Explanation of clues:
Spoiler: click to toggleShow
Clue #1: He goes in to get a soda, but comes out smelling like a still.
Shane (Alan Ladd) first visits the saloon to buy a soda for little boy Joey (Brandon de Wilde). The gunfighter refuses to engage in a confrontation with Calloway and his men; the bad guys try to goad him into a fight by calling him "sody-pop" and throwing whiskey all over his brand-new work shirt.

Clue #2: She puts on her wedding gown, but not just for her husband.
Marion (Jean Arthur) tries to find a dress to wear to the party; she finally pulls out her tissue-wrapped wedding gown. The film strongly implies that she puts it on (consciously or not) because of Shane's presence as well as her husband's (Van Heflin), to appear at her best for both men.

Clue #3: Father still has work for him, and Mother wants him!
He may be senseless to such pleas.

In the famous scene when Shane makes his final, wounded ride through Cemetery Hill and up toward the mountains, Joey shouts after him: "Pa's got things for you to do, and Mother wants you...I know she does. Shane! Shane! Come back!..." Shane doesn't turn around, slumped in his saddle, and the film leaves it unclear whether he is dying or already unconscious / dead (= senseless) when Joey is calling.

Clue #4: To preserve a family, he must first lick a van.
Shane has to stop a determined Starrett (Van Heflin) from meeting a sure death by keeping him out of the final gun battle. The two men slug it out, and finally Shane wins by knocking Starrett out with the butt of his gun.
