Yea, I think watching the VS blu was part of the reason I liked it so much. Their 4K scan of it really brought out how well it was shot and those saturated colors.

Consisting of interviews with his surviving family members and former colleagues, this documentary probes into J. Robert Oppenheimer, his development of the atomic bomb and his subsequent regrets after learning of the devastation. It is fascinating subject and while his change-of-mind comes off as little too instantaneous for credibility, it is certainly a remarkable. All of the interviews are very informative too.

Sitting in the saddle for two and a half hours, the screenplay by co-writer/(with Nusrat Sayyed & V.K. Sharma) director Ambrish Sangal impressively keep the pistol-whip action moving at a breakneck pace, thanks to wonderfully oddball twists such as the main baddie Kaher Singh staging his own death, via giving the gunmen fake bullets (talk about being prepared!) and honest cop Vikram finding he must cross the line,after being framed for the murder of his wife (which was done by Kaher.) Lassoing gloriously funky Bollywood song numbers, director Sangal & cinematographer Pramod Mittal duel weld ultra-stylised wah-wah button bashing zoom-ins on the superbly kitsch "dhishoom!"-soundtrack punch-up, grooving to Bappi Lahiri's banging dark synch score.

Bringing Vikram out of jail in search for revenge, Sangal gives this Curry Western some spice, by matching the kitsch with a sharp grit in whip-pans flying towards cowboy Vikram beating down Kehar Singh with a surprising amount of blood spray across the Indian Wild West.Cackling at the success of his own evil plan, Om Shivpuri gives a gleeful turn as Kehar,whilst Tina Ambani plays on the Wild West dame image as Neeta, who underhandedly joins in the fight for revenge, charged by Mithun Chakraborty's giving Vikram a live-wire ruggedness,as he finds himself wanted, dead or alive.

Linking the tales together with a wraparound story of narrator "Uncle" Paul (played with the right amount of creepy vibes by future Adult film maker Paul Thomas) getting up close with his niece, husband & wife co-writers/co-directing auteurs David I. Frazer & " Svetlana" reunite with cinematographer Gene Petrov and flick this showcase of up and "coming" starlets with soft-focus close-ups on the alluring leads, and crisp, glossy lighting bringing a touch of glamour to proceedings.

Coming in the middle of her run that would climax in taking the industry to the brink of collapse, Traci Lords gives an enthusiastic turn as high school chick Jodie, who puts John Leslie's teacher Warren under pressure to cave in to her request for a lustful education. The stars of the show,Rikki Blake and Peter North give erotic, eager performances as Cheryl and Brian, whose Lovers Lane visit soon gets hot and heavy. Based around lad and lasses losing their innocence, the writers sweeten the theme with a welcomed thrust of Comedy into the tales, with the butter wouldn't melt in their mouth innocence being spread along them initiating proceedings to pop cherries.

Retaining his roots as a prolific poster designer in the 60s and 70s once he moved into making Adult Movies during the Golden Age of skin flicks, and later saying in a interview that he felt an obligation to the producers to shoot "hard-core" scenes in a certain way they would be happy with (rather then what he would have liked) co-writer/(with regular collaborator Daria Price) director Armand Weston finishes his credits by reuniting with cinematographer Joao Fernandes for a thrust into the mainstream.

Continuing his exploration of how sensuality fits into a landscape, cultural or environmental, Weston displays a welcomed, unexpected patience in holding back from unloading a premature climax, instead sinking Cochran into the foundation of the mysterious house (the exterior being the real Armour-Stiner House) which brings up a thick atmosphere of Gothic Horror dread, spun in crawling panning shots along the red and pink silk drapes lining the house. Entering the house with Cochran, (played by a very good Robin Groves,who keeps the slow-burn going until she explodes into a Scream Queen) the screenplay by Weston and Price peel away at the ghostly state of the boudoir (which the makers make clear was run by a woman) to uncover the horrific violence the local men inflicted on the innocent ladies of the establishment,whose ghostly aftermath has been left nestled within the walls.

Wiggling to get in on the "Black Magic" Horror craze the Shaw Brothers were getting hits from at the time, director Jen-Chieh Chang & cinematographer Hsi-Chieh Lai grab a gross-out proto- CAT III opening of a grisly witch tossing the bugs,snakes,worms and gunge out of the guts of a man being thrown across the screen under a burning neon light. When not indulging in cursed worm puking or flying Kung-Fu witches, Chang jolts the film to a frustrating stop-start atmosphere, where welcomed odd Horror set-pieces are chewed up by aggregating broad Comedy, with the cast attempts to be kooky ending up more like grating. This tone leaves the abrupt move in the miss-matched screenplay by Po Sheng Lu into over ripe family Melodrama for the clumsy final, to leave the devil with the last laugh.


FTV:8: The Funhouse. 10.





Putting up the big top, Arrow present a outstanding Blu-Ray, pairing up a print which retains film grain and a clean soundtrack,with a jam-packed amount of extras,including three commentaries.

Entering the funhouse of a major studio with his first widescreen feature, director Tobe Hooper is joined by The Warriors (1979-also reviewed) cinematographer Andrew Laszlo for a cheeky "Greatest Hits" opening sequence which mashes up the shower scene in Psycho and the opening of Halloween, sprinkled with a eyeful of Elizabeth Berridge's fairground rides,and ending on a pan towards the poster of Universal's Frankenstein. Wisely pushing the most prominent Slasher elements right to the closing 30 minutes, Hooper continues to tread in the backwaters he first visited in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974),rising high above the funhouse with Laszlo in excellent wide crane-shots laying out the isolating location of the funhouse.

Coming down from above to join the group of small-town middle class teens just looking for some fun, Hooper continues his love for sinister playthings and scary clowns with a icy jokey unease atmosphere,by splattering the walls of the funhouse with brash reds,pinks and yellow painted on moving figures, who under the sound system of the carnival, laugh in the faces of the teens terrified by the freaks (which includes a wonderful Rick Baker designed snarling mutant.)

Getting his original screenplay adapted into a novel by Dean R. Koontz before alterations were made during production, the script by Lawrence J. Block enters the funfair of the troubled, grotesque family unit, sprung from Amy going against the orders of her dad by joining her boyfriend Buzz and their pals for a visit to the funfair, where they discover that behind the big top is a red neck father and son who have murderous impulses. Later telling special makeup execution Craig Reardon on another project that she was "Ashamed" of the movie (oh darling,the shame of it all!) Elizabeth Berridge gives a lively,plucky turn as "Final Girl" Amy,whilst Kevin Conway (who told Hooper he would only sign on if he could do all the roles) steals the film with his delightfully macabre performances as Freak Show Barker / Strip Show Barker and Funhouse Barker,welcoming all to the funhouse.

FTV:9: Battles Without Honor and Humanity: The Complete Saga (1980)8.



Closing their magnificent box set with guns still blazing, Arrow present a terrific transfer,with the audio staying crisp and the print having a fitting level of grit, wrapped up with a short,but informative interview from the editor.

Asked by the studio in 1980 to create up a “Complete Saga” of the series that was to get a limited run in cinemas,and screened on TV,and getting the blessing of director Kinji Fukasaku (who was filming in the North Pole at the time of editing!) editor Toru Dobashi’s decision to ignore the final flick in the run, (Final Episode (1974-also reviewed)) highlights the incredible high standards of Kazuo Kasahara scripts (who did not write the final film.)

Even when understandably having to be condensed with new montages and mildly distracting new narration, (due to it clearly not being the same narrator as the one who narrated the five Battles) Kasahara writing shines as a epic tale spanning the underworld history of Japan. From the opening roar,Dobashi editing confirms Toshiaki Tsushima’s gripping score as being a major character of the films, with Kinji Fukasaku’s stylish, raw directing across four films being all blended together in layers of Tsushima thunderous score playing the final notes to thee battles without honour and humanity.
