26. Breathless (1983, Jim McBride): 7.8 - This being the (in)famous remake of Godard's classic it has some large shoes to fill. While it doesn't reach the heights of that movie and for sure doesn't revolutionize film language the way Godard did, McBride does do what every good remake does; making the remake completely his own thing. À bout de souffle was a French movie influenced by American cinema, McBride through infusing it with a heavy dose of rockability and the L.A. setting makes it again an American movie, but one that's clearly inspired by the French Nouvelle vague in its playfulness with style. It's not surprising this among Tarantino's favorite movies, cause with its use of rock 'n roll soundtrack, cool styling and reference to pop culture this a proto-Tarantino movie if there ever was one. Gere, who seems totally self-aware he is playing up his sex symbol imago, is very convincing because he plays the lead as a total obnoxious self-indulged guy painfully unaware of the real feelings and thought of his love interest. Which is another aspect this movie gets right; it makes clear that the central couple, besides some great attraction in bed are emotionally and intellectually incompatible. Gere only sees Kaprisky character as an ideal dream image, while Kaprisky only seems attracted to the adventurous lifestyle Gere offers as a break from her more mundane life as a exchange student. Standout moment is when Gere's character helps himself out of an emotional meltdown by signing Suspicious Minds to himself. Which turns out to be a predecessor for the fabulous ending.

27. Nineteen Eighty-Four [1984] (1984, Michael Radford): 7.2 - Most noticeable of this adaptation of Orwell's famous book is that it only implies a lot that's explained in the book. One can accuse the movie of being hard to follow if one is not familiar with the source material. On the other hand one can see this as a realistic portrayal of how life for these characters is without making explicit what for these characters is evident and common knowledge. It is the realistic bleak depiction of such a dystopian society the movie excels in most. It succeeds less in bringing across the emotional dread of living under such a totalitarian regime. Great performance by John Hurt and Richard Burton do help bringing the characters alive nonetheless.

28. Def-Con 4 (1985, Paul Donovan): 6.5 - After witnessing the eruption of WWIII from a satellite in outer space the crew lands in the total destructed society, where one is almost immediately eaten by cannibals and the other two eventually caught by the ruthless Mad Max inspired gangs that, of course, rule in such an lawless post-apocalyptic society. It felt like this movie was over before the real story still had to start. Which positively does mean the movie moves at a great pace. But it did left me with a feeling the movie never really lived up to its potential, squandering its run-time in what in hindsight is a very unfocused plot. It's the kind of movie that does make great use of its limited budget, f.e. by reducing the movie for the first 30 to a single set and small cast by setting it inside the satellite. The acting is absolute horrible, with Maury Chaykin as the only positive standout. The amazing poster is way better than this movie.

Hiya shugs and thanks for hosting. I'm having a very quiet December and I've been putting off posting my challenge-related viewings as the new layout rather hurts my eyes.

88. Carmen (1983) - 8/10
ICM
March Challenge: None
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

Well, this one is for horror fans only... No plot, no suspense, bad acting, strange electronic music, a slow pace... But I enjoyed the gory fulcian make-ups and the atmosphere...

This is intriguing to begin with, benefiting from unsettling dream reading and hypnosis scenes and a sense that her parents are hiding some dark secret. That said, the horror does not really begin until the college students reach the mall over halfway in and the film is topped off with a ridiculous twist that leaves several unanswered questions regarding her amnesia and nightmares. The location is pretty spooky though and the techno score is great.

29. The Delta Force (1986, Menahem Golan): 6.8 - This Canon-Chuck Norris vehicle clearly exist of two parts. The first part focusses on the hijacking of an airplane. Based on various real hijack situations many of the portrayed incidents and persons in this half really existed and happened. This makes the depiction quite realistic. For B action schlock the portrayal of both terrorist and hostages is quite nuanced and subtle. The terrorist are also shown to have a human side, f.e. when one does help a pregnant woman. It also features a surprisingly famous cast for this kind of movie with Martin Balsam, George Kennedy, Shelley Winters, Hanna Schygulla and Lainie Kazan among the hostages. The moral is far from subtle though, f.e. when a German stewardess screams she can't help pick out the Jewish passengers, cause she is Jewish and the War!. While this half set ups the situation realistically and builds the tension well, it does mean there is almost no Chuck Norris and no action in this half. Luckily for people coming into this for that, which I gather will be most, the second half more than makes up for this. In this half every little bit of realism and nuances of the first half is abandoned and the movie turns into a straight 80s action movie with cartoonesque over the top action, including. Norris on a motorcycle with a never missing rocketlauncher. While being pure nonsense and revisionist action for all who wished the real-life hijacking ended differently, this half does offer entertaining 80s action in the best way possible. While both halfs works well on their own, the movie as a whole is a combination of two conflicting parts.

Not only a candidate for the funniest movie ever made but a thoughtful look at ruthlessness in a world where life is unfair. It is fascinating how totally likeable all the characters are - even Danny DeVito's protagonist who stole a young couple's innovative fashion idea, married for money and wants his wife dead. None of the characters in the film are totally good - or totally evil - and there some great character growth and progression too. Plus it's hilarious.

11. Wend Kuuni (Gaston Kaboré, 1982) 5/10
12. Rue Cases Nègres (Euzhan Palcy, 1983) 7/10 <-- pleasantly surprised by this coming-of-age drama which is not my cup of tea usually but there were brilliant insights about the village life in colonial Martinique and a relevant approach about the cycle of poverty and how it's nearly impossible to break it

13. El Sur (Victor Erice, 1983) 6/10 <-- really captivating in the first half, but I thought the movie is a little too sophisticated and solemn given the scope of the plot, OK there are allusions to Spanish history etc. but it's just a small family drama after all, I expected something else I guess

14. Szabadgyalog (Béla Tarr, 1981) 6/10 <-- Had I watched it several years earlier, it would have hit me harder. But I thought it was too chatty, some dialogues didn't make much sense and Tarr was too heavy on close-ups this time, the movie doesn't "breathe" enough. But positive impressions overall, always "spot on" with the problem of finding one's own path in life.

The decade that produced the greatest living human
1. The Decline of Western Civilization (1981)
2. Not a Love Story: A Film About Pornography (1981)

Comments in Doc thread, but basically I thought it was an interesting insight into one side of the pornography debates in feminist circles of the time period.

Oddly enough, this is only the second doc from the 1980s I've stumbled across. I'm going to have to put out some effort I see.

While her naiveté to all things sex-related is hard to buy, Julie Walters does well here once her character begins to proudly embrace being a brothel madame. The film walks a fine line between comedy and drama though and the balance often feels off. The most intriguing aspect is the sexual fantasies of the men (who are all middle aged or elderly) but it often feels like the film is making fun of their kinks and fetishes, and the overall film isn't very funny.

24. Légitime violence, by Serge Leroy (1982) 8/10

A template of the french popular cinema of the decade. A good script with social undertones, great popular actors (or soon to be, as Christian Clavier plays a small part), and a solid direction make this police film a very good one... I watched it as an hommage to the late Claude Brasseur, who passed away yesterday to many's dismay.

This boasts magnificent Oscar nominated costumes (see above) and divine sets in its Africa scenes, and Eddie Murphy's initial adventures in the US are very funny, mistaking cusses for compliments and so on. The romance angle is less interesting. Murphy and Shari Headley have okay chemistry, but the courtship is very standard. The second half of the film also spends too much time on Murphy and Arsenio Hall playing multiple characters under heavy makeup.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! The decade that produced the greatest living human
1. The Decline of Western Civilization (1981)
2. Not a Love Story: A Film About Pornography (1981)
3. Die Hard (1988)
In this intimate portrayal of a family-oriented business, a well-liked CEO faces hostile elements trying to take over his business. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, he is unsuccessful, and ends up dying hard. Two of his best employees step up to the table in his absence, trying to lead the company and all the employees out of this distress. Sadly, one of them also dies hard. In the end, this touching film wins over the hearts and minds of its audience, making them feel the true meaning of Christmas.
