181a. Memories of Nashville: Memories of Downtown Nashville (2009)
181b. Memories of Nashville: Memories of Opryland (2009)
More of Memories of Nashville... I still don't know how I ended up with these DVDs. The only one that would actually make sense for something I'd be actively interested in is Memories of Opryland just because I love theme parks, and I do actually have vague memories of visiting Opryland as a kid before it closed. The doc itself is just a puff piece unfortunately and one that focuses very heavily on the shows. I'd prefer it covered the rides more as well as the factors leading to the closing of Opryland.

182. Things That Go Bump in the Night: The Spooky Pinball Story (2017)
This was a decent doc on the scrappy little Spooky Pinball company started by a happy-go-lucky guy named Charlie and his family. At times it almost feels like a promo video for the town of Benton, Wisconsin where Spooky Pinball has setup shop because the town does so much to help the company succeed. It was interesting to see current pinball culture and know that it is still possible for a pinball company to succeed.

Image
183. To Whom It May Concern: Ka Shen's Journey (2010)
Very good doc on actress Nancy Kwan and her experiences in Hollywood as well as personal tragedies and trials.

Image
184. Monster Camp (2007)
This was a fun one about a LARPing group (live action role playing) who gather together every few months to play a scenario. I'm not into LARPing myself, but I did like that the doc doesn't look down on the people here and really seems to just want to show how much they love and enjoy being a part of this event.

Image
185a. Automobiles: BMW (1994)
Basically a history of the BMW company... another DVD I ended up with for reasons beyond me. It's fine but I'm not the biggest fan of BMWs.

Image
185b. Biography: Elizabeth I: Virgin Queen (1997)
A&E's Biography is generally pretty reliable in terms of doling out a reasonable amount of info on its subject and this one does a solid job of filling you in on who Elizabeth I was if you weren't familiar with her. It's not super detailed and skims over parts of her life but is fine as an intro.

186. The Power of Nightmares: The Rise of the Politics of Fear (2004)
This mini-series didn't tell me a lot I didn't already know, but it was still nice to see it all laid out in a very matter-of-fact manner with testimony from people actually involved in many of the shenanigans discussed. Sadly it's even more relevant now than it ever was on a global scale. The US conservatives still employ these tactics and in fact Trump has ratcheted them up and amplified them even more. But I see this fear mongering employed more outside the US as well with the factors leading to Brexit, the behavior of Duterte in the Philippines and others. The problem of course is that even though it's delivered in a very straightforward way with a focus on facts and first-hand accounts, it would just be dismissed as "fake news" by anyone that even remotely opposes what it's trying to say.

12. Our Nixon (2013)
Back in grad school, I did a research project on Nixon and had the pleasure of doing a couple of weeks of research at the Nixon Library in Yorba Linda. So I approached this movie with excitement, especially after seeing the rollicking fun of "Nuts!" -- director Penny Lane's follow-up to Our Nixon. This movie is based on the home movies of Bob Haldeman, John Ehrlichman, and Dwight Chapin. Chapin was a minor figure, but the other two were major players in the Nixon White House. All three were apparently Super-8 enthusiasts. Most of the movie consists of their footage, accompanied by audio excerpts from interviews with the three men or from the Nixon Oval Office tapes. The result is a weird vision of the Nixon presidency as a sort of fun adventure. Brief sequences are devoted to various notable episodes -- the Moon landing, the visit to Beijing, etc. A note of lunacy appears during one Nixon rant about how "the homosexuals" destroyed Ancient Greece and Rome. Then we're off to Watergate, where things get weirder. All three men went to jail because of Watergate, but their comments unanimously engage in blame-passing, excuse-making, and denial. Haldeman goes the furthest, ludicrously claiming, years after the fact, that the White House had no involvement with the Watergate burglars. And I think this dissonance is perhaps the point of the movie -- that the sunny images of the home videos belie the essential rottenness of what really happened, just as Haldeman, Ehrlichman, and Chapin (and dozens of other aides, not to mention Nixon himself) practice a dissonance in which they are both acknowledged criminals and completely misunderstood. I worry a bit that viewers not well-versed in what the Nixon administration actually did will not recognize this dynamic.

13. The Silence of Others (2018)
The topic here is the emergence in recent decades in Spain of a movement to re-examine the atrocities of the Franco regime. We meet victims or the relatives of victims who struggle to hold perpetrators accountable, to mount public hearings, or at least to recover the remains of murdered parents. Their interviews are haunting and tragic. They find little success, blocked repeatedly by Spain's Law of Amnesty and a political consensus that forgetting the past is preferable to reopening old wounds. The true implications of the movie are much larger than Spain and touch on enormously important questions for every country -- How should societies deal with the mass violence of the past? How should they weigh the need for justice against the need for reconciliation? Does a democratic society in which all must live together require the erasure of past atrocities? What process or enactment of historical memory could yield the best results? The movie provides a clear argument: A culture of forgetting is impossible because some people can't forget -- to bury their experiences only serves to re-victimize them, and propagating historical amnesia about past atrocities makes their recurrence more likely. An amazing documentary. Highly recommended.

14. Blue Water, White Death (1971)
A group of people, most of them spearfishermen or other adventurers, want to see some Great White Sharks. So they get a boat and travel around the Indian Ocean looking for them. That's the whole movie. There's some cool underwater photography. I imagine in a pre-Jaws and pre-Planet Earth era, this might have been mind-blowing stuff. These days, I think it's probably only of interest to true shark enthusiasts (and true shark movie enthusiasts like Max). It's also clear that Wes Anderson lifted at least one detail from this movie for The Life Aquatic.

Consisting of interviews with his surviving family members and former colleagues, this documentary probes into J. Robert Oppenheimer, his development of the atomic bomb and his subsequent regrets after learning of the devastation. It is fascinating subject and while his change-of-mind comes off as little too instantaneous for credibility, it is certainly a remarkable. All of the interviews are very informative too.

5. The Black Oud (1992)

Kinda like an avant-garde home movie of a vacation to Greece. Some nice shots of ruins and of the Mediterranean summer, but all of it drowned in non-stop poetic/philosophical voice-over.

Spoiler
1. Koyaanisqatsi (1982)
2. Chariots of the Gods (1970)
3. Water and Power (1989)
4. Stop Making Sense (1984)
5. The Black Oud (1992)

12. Hands on a Hardbody: The Documentary (Bindler, 1997) 6/10
13. The Social Dilemma (Orlowski, 2020)
This looks fancy, but it does a couple of things I'm not keen on: it's very polemical and it's interspersed with silly dramatisations where Vincent Kartheiser plays anthropomorphised social media algorithms living in the Tron-world and manipulating hapless teens.
4/10

14. The Flesh and the Fury: X-posing Twins of Evil (Griffith, 2012)
A documentary about the Hammer Horror classic Twins of Evil, I believe it was made as an extra for the Synapse Blu-Ray release. It's of a very high standard for one these film documentaries; they've got some good interviewees, including key people involved in the film and some interesting archive footage and photos.
6/10

Image

15. Cropsey (Brancaccio-Zeman, 2009)
I was under the impression that this was a mockumentary, as it turns up on a few horror lists, but it's actually a true-crime doc about a child murderer on Staten Island, with a half-hearted attempt to link it to an urban legend. There are some parts where it is genuinely creepy, but there's also a bit of filler in there as well.

Not sure what to make of this British docuseries yet (currently streaming on Netflix). Each episode is heavily weighted towards proving the conspiracy; a couple have conflicting testimony from those skeptical of the conspiracies, but the series mostly just mounts the information on, constantly to referring to the "accept story" etc. when discussing historical events. In terms of the individual episodes, the first was actually quite fascinatingly, largely focused on whether or not Hitler really committed suicide and a Nazi bases in the South Pole (oh yes). The second episode about the Royal Family only became interesting to me when it got to Diana (since that's a part of history that I lived through myself). The third one about the Cold War was fascinating in bits and pieces but not much that I could relate to. The fourth episode is about disappearances with a lot of weight understandably given to Hoffa, but I wanted to know more about the Lindbergh baby case as I wasn't aware of the depths of accusations against his father.

133. The Clinton Affair: Part 6: The Will of the People (2018 / Blair Foster) 7/10
A very absorbing and even-handed overview of the Clinton–Lewinsky scandal, told mainly from the perspective of Lewinsky herself.

141. Flight From Death: The Quest for Immortality (2003 / Patrick Shen) 6/10
This is based on the work of Ernest Becker, a psychologist-anthropologist who proposed that humans attempt to gain a kind of immortality through means such as religion, art and wealth, driven by an ever-present, though usually subconscious, fear of death. He also suggested that the same fear is the root cause of most aggression and violence. In style, particularly the jarring techno soundtrack, the documentary's quite dated now. The most interesting parts are the accounts of research into what's called 'Terror Management Theory', wherein test subjects are exposed to subtle suggestions of death and their reactions monitored and compared with those of subjects who weren't exposed to the suggestions.

Although there are funny moments, it's overall a very disappointing sequel as I thought the first Borat film was hilarious. My main complaint is over how artificial lots of the interactions with the 'public' are.

Civilisation: The Skin of Our Teeth

1. The Day the Dinosaurs Died (2017 / Nick Green; Ben Lawrie; Toby Macdonald) 6/10
Less about the dinosaurs themselves than about the effects of the immense asteroid that landed off the coast of Mexico, which is believed to have brought about the dinosaurs' extinction. Some interesting points on how geologists deduce the effect of the impact from the remaining evidence.

Stories from the Stone Age: Urban Dream (2003 / Roger Scholes) 8/10
3. Stories from the Stone Age: Waves of Change (2003 / Roger Scholes) 8/10
Excellent series on man in the Stone Age, the gradual but often pivotal innovations as he moved from hunter-gatherer to farmer to city-dweller. No doubt overly simplified (it's mostly linear and focuses primarily on the Middle East and Europe), but very clearly laid out.

6. Huie's Sermon (1981 / Werner Herzog) 6/10
Recording of a sermon given by a charismatic Brooklyn preacher. Interesting for his frenzied delivery and for how several of the topics he touches on (transgenderism, economic crashes, green energy, environmental damage) are still at the forefront of discussion today.
7. Diego Maradona (2019 / Asif Kapadia) 6/10
This wasn't bad but a little disappointing, particularly when contrasted with Kapadia's earlier 'sporting legend' documentary Senna. There wasn't enough about why Maradona was a great footballer - little input from fellow footballers - and too much mundane home movie footage, which seems to have been one of the film's main selling points, so that the football became more a backdrop to the character study. But aside from the controversies, Maradona doesn't seem to have been an interesting enough character to sustain the devotion the film lavishes on him. A small, but persisting, annoyance was the use of sound effects to accompany every kick and punch in the on-pitch footage.

21. Andrew Marr's History of the World: Age of Extremes (2012 / Guy Smith) 6/10
Not really a history of the world - how could it be? - instead a series of dramatic re-enactments (around six per episode) of significant events in history, ranging from Stone Age people migrating out of Africa to the Deep Blue vs. Garry Kasparov chess match in the 1990s, accompanied by Marr's narration in various modern day locales. Inevitably quite Eurocentric, but world history often is. Marr's goofy presenting style and snarkiness are quite annoying.

Without Walls: Hell's Angel: Mother Teresa (1994 / Jenny Morgan) 7/10
A scathing hatchet job on the Albanian nun by everyone's favourite contrarian, Christopher Hitchens. Watching this in 2020, I get similar vibes from how the media and governments received Teresa 30+ years ago to how they do Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg now. Unfortunately the 25 minute runtime doesn't allow for much depth.

49. The Birth of the Tramp (2013 / Serge Bromberg; Eric Lange) 6/10
A decent overview of Charlie Chaplin's early years, from childhood up until the early '20s. It was interesting to learn about other performers creating blatant, shot-for-shot counterfeits of Chaplin's films, including a female tramp (complete with moustache).

57. The World at War: Reckoning: 1945... and After (1974 / Jerome Kuehl) 8/10
The World at War: Remember (1974 / Jeremy Isaacs) 7/10
Excellent, broad overview of WW2, narrated by Laurence Olivier. The way it's constructed - with episodes focusing on particular themes, theatres and events, rather than a straight chronological account - helps make things easy to follow. It wasn't until watching that I realised just how much of the war I'd already imbibed through various channels (high school, cultural references, movies, the odd documentary) without ever having strictly studied it.
58. Russia 1917: Countdown to Revolution (2017 / Renny Bartlett) 3/10
Pretty awful account of the lead up to the Russian Revolution. The talking heads often just spout unedifying generalisations, which makes me wonder how expert they are on the subject. The hammy dramatisations are the worst part, however.59. Ways of Seeing: Part One (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10

63. The Soviet Story (2008 / Edvins Snore) 6/10
64. Hellstorm (2015 / Kyle Hunt) 2/10
Neo-Nazi take on Allied violence during WW2. The narrator says at the outset that they make no attempt to analyse the violent actions of the Axis, but this means the criticisms of several Allied actions are near worthless as they are divorced from context. Worse still, I'm suspicious about many of the claims and quotes given throughout the film. Searching for several of them on Google returned results only for this film and the book on which it was based, which leads me to suspect they are fake. No experts are interviewed.

69. Men of Ideas: The Ideas of Chomsky (1978) 7/10
70. The Killing of America (1981 / Sheldon Renan; Leonard Schrader) 4/10
A mondo film tour, via news footage, through many of the most high-profile American killings, from the Kennedy assassination to John Lennon's death. Although it has a serious approach, I felt the way it gloried in frequent scenes of graphic violence undermined the supposed anti-gun message it purports to carry.
71. The Untold History of the United States: Prologue Chapter A - World War I, the Russian Revolution & Woodrow Wilson (2013 / Oliver Stone) 5/10
The Untold History of the United States: Prologue: Chapter B - 1920-1940, Franklin D.Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin (2013) / Oliver Stone) 5/10
72. The Untold History of the United States: Chapter 1: World War Two (2012 / Oliver Stone) 5/10
I think I've given up on this after three episodes. Stone's narration, listless yet too-rapid, is so unengaging. Its like having a encyclopaedia entry read out for an hour at a time. It really needed a more professional narrator and interviews with other subjects.

78. Michael Jackson: Chase the Truth (2019 / Jordan Hill) 5/10
79. Neverland Firsthand: Investigating the Michael Jackson Documentary (2019 / Eli Pedraza) 4/10
It's odd with these Jackson documentaries. I finished Reed's film more or less convinced the allegations were true. I think that's partly a consequence of the four hour duration, giving you plenty of time to become absorbed in the story, plus the fact that you're solely ensconced with the accusers and their families the whole time, all of whom seem very believable, plus the ethereal production style - gentle score and copious floating drone shots. But then afterwards you kind of snap out of it and consider the selective editing and other choices that must have gone into it. The pro-Jackson films in response to it were more blatantly skewed in his favour, often going into praise of Jackson that adds nothing to his case, but there were certain worthwhile points made, particularly in Hill's film regarding inconsistencies, if not downright falsehoods, in the accusers' stories.

83. Diana: The Mourning After (1998 / Mark Soldinger) 7/10
The other Hitchens documentary I watched this month on Mother Teresa brought to mind contemporary analogues. This one did the same. Recalling the mass hysteria and media monomania that arose in the wake of Diana's death put me in mind of George Floyd's death this year and the 'Black Lives Matter' derangement that followed. What was different in Diana's death was the absence of social media. The similarities are superficial, but both gripped people in a media-fuelled frenzy.

106. Panodrama (2019 / Tommy Robinson) 3/10
Polarising English nationalist Tommy Robinson documents his dealings with BBC documentary series Panorama as they attempt to create a 'takedown' film of him. I don't know the specifics of Robinson well, but he seems like an unpleasant, dishonest individual in several ways, who frequently ends up vindicated and cast as a victim thanks largely to the underhand treatment he receives at the hands of the media and his opponents. This film demonstrates that quite well. It's amateurish and Robinson is clearly no intellect, talking incoherently at a rambling pace while making sweeping, dubious claims, but thanks to the arrogance of Panorama reporter John Sweeney constantly putting his foot in his mouth, he comes out of this looking like the wronged party.

Comically delusional exercise in cultural appropriation from social media troll Nasheed. The gist is that basically everything, from the wheel to the Russian language to civilisation itself, was invented by black people.

Have I Got 30 Years for You (2020 / Matt Fisher) 6/10
120. Fire at Sea (2016 / Gianfranco Rosi) 4/10
Set on the small Italian island of Lampedusa during the European immigration crisis. Weirdly, Rosi constructs this in the style of a narrative film akin to something, say, Ulrich Seidl would make. The stylistic aspects and focus on the sleepy life of the Lampedusans makes for an artificial experience that doesn't really encourage compassion for the largely passive migrant masses.
121. The Red Pill (2016 / Cassie Jaye) 6/10
Set in the movement known as men's rights activism (MRA); a movement that campaigns for fair treatment for men in a society where they believe feminism has moved from being about basic equality between the sexes to being a constant, ongoing battle against perceived structural issues in an all-encompassing 'patriarchy'. Beyond a few fleeting references to rape apology (which are later clarified) and some lesser unsavoury attitudes, I couldn't see why anyone would have any major issues with what these people were arguing. But when Jaye gives their opponents the floor, despite being reputable figures (e.g. a professor, a magazine editor) they're generally arrogantly dismissive of, if not militantly hostile to, the MRA's concerns. Judging by the other feminist and pro-gay films she's made, Jaye doesn't seem to be a shill, but this does play out as a predictable 'journey' of learning about MRA, ultimately cumulating in her abandoning the identity of 'feminist' (hence the title).

127. Zoo (2007 / Robinson Devor) 3/10
This was remarkably tedious for a film about a man who died after having sex with a horse. For some reason the director chose to pointlessly obfuscate the story among non-linear narrative, lack of clarity about who's talking, and irrelevant anecdotes. Maybe he felt this matched the shady nature of the zoophile lifestyle, but I don't think it worked.
128. 13th (2016 / Ava DuVernay) 3/10
A film about the increasing incarceration rate in America that creates a neat, broad-brush narrative of oppression against the black population while barely touching on the subject of criminality, unless it's to imply that it's the result of socio-historical forces. The veneration of convicted accomplice to murder Assata Shakur was particularly tasteless.

187. Incident at Loch Ness (2004)
This is a pretty well-done mockumentary with a pretty ridiculous premise. Let's take venerable director Werner Herzog and have him go in search of the Loch Ness Monster. Let's have Hollywood screenwriter Zak Penn (who has written lots of superhero movies like X-Men 2 and The Avengers) and have him go along with the production, attempting to "jazz it up" by hiring a DP who has worked on big Hollywood films to shoot glossy re-enactments, hire a sexy model to pretend to be a Sonar expert and stage fake sightings amidst the "real" sightings. The whole thing hovers dangerously in ouroboros territory of becoming too meta for its own good but with almost all the dialogue and incidents improvised and Herzog himself giving a very grounded presence to the proceedings. It mostly comes across pretty effective for what it's trying to do and offering an interesting look at what is or isn't real.

188. Not for Resale (2019)
This was a fun doc on retro video game stores and physical vs. digital media and where it will go in the future. While it's obvious where the filmmakers fell on the 'digital vs physical' argument, they still do a solid job presenting both sides of divide.

Image
189. Black Sky: Winning the X Prize (2004)
This one is a doc following the journey of Burt Ruttan and how his SpaceshipOne won the X-Prize, a competition sponsored to give $10 million to the first non-government person to build a manned spaceflight into space twice in two weeks (as a way to vet out it's practical use rather than as a one and done design) to fuel the advancement of spaceflight. It's a little on the dry side in the way its filmed but certainly interesting for those into spaceflight.

190. Creature Feature: 50 Years of the Gill-Man (2004)
This is a feature-length, independently produced doc on the Creature from the Black Lagoon. Unlike the official doc from Universal that's more a standard overview and behind the scenes piece, this one is more interested in exploring the legacy of the Creature and its impact on pop culture, showing the conventions that have sprung up, the people in film that have been influenced by it and catching up with actors and crew from the films years later and having them reflect on it and how the Creature has impacted their careers. It's a solid watch even if you've seen the more standard behind-the-scenes doc.

191. Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets (2020)
So this is an interesting one and has created some controversy this year in how it has been categorized as a documentary at a couple of film festivals. See, it's not technically a completely organic doc. It purports to film the final night of a Las Vegas bar the night of the election in 2016. In reality, it was filmed in New Orleans and the bar patrons were hand-picked by the directors to attend the evening. So it certainly has a staged aspect to it. But that's where the staged aspects end. The film is completely unscripted and follows the denizens of the bar as they drink and commiserate throughout the evening and into the next morning. It's surprisingly easy to watch with some very likable people you just want to keep following even though nothing of major importance really happens. It reminds me quite a bit of a Frederick Wiseman doc in how there's no narration and the focus is just on observation of the human condition in a specific setting.

192. Side by Side (2012)
It's interesting that I saw this and Not For Resale in the same day completely unplanned since it basically covers the same argument in the film industry as Not For Resale did for video games in that it is a look at the transition in the film industry from 35mm film to digital photography, showing both sides of the fence. Although unlike Not for Resale, I feel like it skews even more heavily toward one side, specifically the benefits of digital and the freedom it allows. The roster of people it nets for interviews is pretty impressive though with the likes of Martin Scorsese, George Lucas, Lars Von Trier and lots more with Keanu Reeves acting as the interviewer. Despite its bias, it is still very watchable and covers some interesting technical aspects of cinematography (although Keepers of the Magic is a much more in-depth doc on cinematography in particular).

Image
193. Videogramme einer Revolution (1992)
This is an intense doc that covers the Romanian revolution of 1989. The subject is quite enthralling and some of the footage here of the firefights and siege is very impressive. The doc itself though is put together a little haphazardly and could've been tightened up or condensed with a few sections that felt unnecessary to include.

28 was the first one of the series I was interested in, as they're finally old enough to have a more long-term perspective on life. While an interesting project, I prefer the scientific approach to longitudinal research.

120. It Started As a Joke (2019)
Eugene Mirman tells the story of the alternative comedy festival he put on for ten years. Fun documentary, right? Boom - Cancer. So there's that.

episodes

Losers: Aliy (2019, 33m)
Losers: Black Jack (2019, 33m)
Losers: The 72nd Hole (2019, 28m)
This was a Netflix docuseries on Losers in sports. Basically, interesting sports stories about some of the interesting events and characters that get lost in the shuffle because there's no argument for them to be the GoaT. Each episode is on a different sport, and there are some interesting characters in each.

First post-Covid special I've watched. Took place in Kevin Hart's spacious living room with an small audience in masks in separated couches. But the material really isn't good. I imagine it's just the result of not being able to hone material in clubs for a while.

Investigating a self-immolation incident in China that the government claims was a political protest, the filmmakers here find evidence that suggests otherwise in this indie documentary. The film raises several interesting questions, interrogating everything from the footage itself to how the government interviewed the self-immolators in hospital afterwards. Nothing especially surprising given events and incidents this year but relatively engaging stuff.

11. 3.0* - Lessons of Darkness [Lektionen in Finsternis] by Werner Herzog (1992)

Herzog documents the Kuwait war, but not in a very traditional way. There are few interviews and little in the way of context, even Herzog's trademark voice-over is largely absent. Instead, he shows us hellish landscapes that often reminded me of fancy CG shots out of Hollywood disaster flicks. Lessons of Darkness is a rather poetic documentary, with a heavy focus on aesthetics to get its message across. I can only applaud that and I readily admit that the film looks quite stunning. I did find the grandeur of the music less fitting, and the interplay between audio and video a little lacking. The film would've been ever better without the two or three interviews, which I felt detracted from the mood Herzog was trying to create. There are quite a few impressive scenes that linger well beyond the end credits and Herzog's approach deserves some praise, the execution could've been better though.

Looks like I won't get to finish this docuseries this month. It hasn't been great, but these last two episodes were definitely an improvement over the first four. The fifth episode is about Hollywood, with curious probes into the deaths of Bruce Lee, Brandon Lee and Phillip Seymour Hoffman (somehow I missed a circling conspiracy theory that scientologists killed him for misrepresenting them in The Master). The sixth episode is aliens and UFOs, all stuff that we have heard before, but it is only episode (of the first sixth at least) that give equal weight to the conspiracy theorists as well as those who refute them.

Sorry I haven't posted in almost a week. Got a little sidetracked. Will try to keep comments short.

120. Vito (2011) 8/10
(l)
121. For Ahkeem (2017) 7/10
This reminded me of a book I read in grad school called Promises I Can Keep: Why Poor Women Put Motherhood Before Marriage. I would recommend both.

122. Anne Braden: Southern Patriot (2002) 7/10
I can't be unbiased as I was mentored by Anne Braden's biographer, Cate Fosl, in grad school so I love this woman and her story. We need more people like Anne in our world.

123. This Changes Everything (2015) 6/20
Climate change doc that was kind of all over the place. Wouldn't recommend.

124-126. Twisted Sisters (Season 1, Episodes 1-6) (252 min total, 12 remaining added to previous remainder, 61 min. remaining)
True crime. I've never had a great relationship with my sister but at least we're both still alive.

127. Wasn't That A Time (1962) 5/10 (27 min total, use 53 of previous remainder, 8 min. remaining)
Liked seeing the original footage of people who were harassed by the House Un American Activities Committee.

128. Freedom Riders (2010) 7/10
Thanks to whoever watched this and wrote about it. I liked learning about COPE and the freedom rides. Anne Braden mentioned them a lot and we celebrated the anniversary when I lived in Louisville so it was great to finally feel like I understand the full picture.

129. Sherman's March (1985) 3/10
Do not understand why this is supposed to be interesting.

130. Brave Miss World Collection (Episodes 1-4) (133 min total, 53 remaining added to previous remainder, 61 min. remaining)
Weird thing to say but--if you're going to watch one documentary on rape, I might say go with this one and the extra episodes on Netflix because you get an idea of not only how this affected her life, but her family as well. In this project there are also a lot of other stories too so it's not just limited to one fairly unusual, but compelling case. They touch on some of the larger issues of untested rape kits and campus rapes and rape culture. Multiple documentaries exist on these sub-topics but I'm still glad they're mentioned here.

131. After Tiller (2013) 7/10
About the few doctors who perform late-term abortions in the U.S. There were some really sad stories and a lot of coverage of the violence these doctors face.

132. Trafficker (2013) 5/10
Worst doc on human trafficking I have seen. Focused on West African women being trafficked to Europe. The problem was that one of the women profiled had a white savior complex and she was pushing women who had already been victimized to do things they didn't want to do. It felt gross and like they were being exploited all over again.

133-134. Challenger: The Final Flight (Episodes 1-4) (176 min total, 16 remaining added to previous remainder, 77 min. remaining)
Apparently I am just enough older than Max that I remember sitting in our cafeteria watching this happen whereas he was home getting his diaper changed. It was fascinating to learn about it as an adult.

135. Sex Slaves (2016) 7/10
Another doc focusing a lot on Eastern European women trafficked to Turkey. The interesting story on this was about a man who was working with the documentarians to find his wife who had been trafficked and sold to pimp.

136. Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) 7/10
I cannot believe this counts. Never eat seafood in Minnesota.

27. Out of Thin Air (2017) * 85 min.

Apparently false confessions in two murders in the mid-1970s in a trial that seems to have been Iceland's trial of the decade are reviewed nearly four decades later. Sometimes the issues that crime documentaries don't go into seem to be more interesting than what they cover. The woman whose confession to a fraud that she and her boyfriend actually committed is pushed towards implicating him in the first murder, and is ultimately convicted for the theft and for perjury for implicating four men in the second killing. The movie is a testament to the incompetence of the Icelandic police. They obtained multiple contradictory false confessions by torturing the suspects using solitary confinement, in some cases for more than a year and a half, and had to bring in a German policeman at the end to get all of the suspects' confessions in agreement. My guess is that the Icelandic police knew of the second victim's involvement in organized crime and pushed the suspects into implicating the four men that they believed had done the killing, then realized that the only evidence that they had against the four was the confessions of a group of druggie losers with no real connection to the four, and decided to go with a simpler case to relieve the political pressure that had been mounting around the unsolved cases.

Interesting for me as a fan of Nordic noir, as its view of the police as political actors echoes series like The Valhalla Murders and The Killing.

194. Iron Fists and Kung Fu Kicks (2019)
Light and breezy, this doc on the history of martial arts in film seems to be pretty shallow and aimed primarily at people who watched The Matrix and wondered what all this crazy kung fu was. While it does cover Shaw Bros. and Golden Harvest for a large chunk of its running time, it either glosses over or completely skips major elements of martial arts cinema like the wuxia sub-genre (which really only gets a mention via Crouching Tiger) and King Hu (no mention of Dragon Inn or A Touch of Zen?). Even more perplexing is that it doesn't cover some things I would've expected it to given their popularity in the west like Tarantino's ode to martial arts Kill Bill (which gets a couple of quick clips but certainly no major coverage like The Matrix and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Donnie Yen (whose Ip Man films especially have been super popular in the west lately) and Jet Li, one of the most well-known martial arts actors. Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung get a lot of lips service but I would've thought they would have done a similar segment on Jet Li with Once Upon A Time in China and Iron Monkey leading to his Hollywood debut in Lethal Weapon 4. So yea, it's ok as a starting point but certainly not a comprehensive view of the subject.

195. Blood & Flesh: The Reel Life & Ghastly Death of Al Adamson (2019)
This was another really good, well put-together doc from David Gregory, one of the main guys behind the Severin Films blu-ray label focusing on low budget schlockmeister Al Adamson, covering his entire film career as well as the bizarre circumstances around his murder. Definitely recommended for fans of cult cinema.

Image
196. Wartorn: 1861-2010 (2010)
This is an HBO doc that focuses on bringing more attention to the effects of PTSD on vets and acts almost as a more modern equivalent to John Huston's Let There Be Light. I think it does a good job showing the issues these people face, but I wish it had focused more on treatment and actions that can be taken to help.

Image
197. Harry Dean Stanton: Partly Fiction (2012)
Very good character portrait of actor Harry Dean Stanton that is structured almost like a "This Is Your Life" with Stanton in present day being interviewed about his films and meeting up with people from his past interspersed with clips from his films and segments from people talking about Stanton, the kind of actor he was and the kind of person he was. The structure is a little loose at times but seems very fitting for a guy like Stanton who comes across as a very laid back, humble kind of person who seems to go wherever the winds take him.

198. Von Caligari zu Hitler: Das deutsche Kino im Zeitalter der Massen a.k.a. From Caligari to Hitler: German Cinema in the Age of the Masses (2014)
This is a prequel of sorts to Hitler's Hollywood and basically covers the birth of German cinema as well as how it both reflects and affects the German people, bringing out traits of the films that mirror the growing mentality that gives rise to the Nazi party. It's very informative and well put-together and makes for a very good companion piece to Hitler's Hollywood. If you have an interest in early German cinema, I definitely recommend checking out both of these.

Image
199. Chulas Fronteras (1976)
Good ol' Les Blank. For those expecting a detailed history of the Mexican migrant worker in the southern US, this is not the doc for you. Instead it is very much in keeping with many of Blank's other docs and acts more as an immersion in culture and in particular Tex Mex identity with a strong emphasis on the music of the people. I actually really liked that early in the doc, one of the musicians calls out that their Tejano music is basically polka, which I've always thought but is nice to hear someone actually in the middle of it comment on.

200. The Eastwood Factor (2010)
Here's the other Eastwood doc on the giant blu-ray set I have, and this one makes for an interesting companion piece to Eastwood Directs. There is some overlap here, mostly in the last third of the movie when it's starts getting more into Clint's directing career in his newer films, but it does cover a lot Eastwood Directs, particularly his acting career. It covers pretty much all his major acting roles and even discusses early supporting roles as well. The format is much more basic, comprised primarily of clips from Eastwood's films with comments from Eastwood himself on the movie and his approach to it unlike Eastwood Directs which had a much bigger focus on interviews with others in the industry and their praise for Eastwood. Overall, I think the two docs complement each other fairly well covering both the acting and directing pretty thoroughly.

Image
201. Everest (1998)
IMAX doc on a climb up Everest. As one would expect, the focus here is on the trials these climbers experience on their journey and the sweeping vistas and dangerous conditions of the mountain. It makes for a solid watch but feels a little too polished at times with that sort of forced narrative that IMAX docs sometimes have.

126. 49 Up (2005)
These have lost a little bit of their soul for me. They seem to have devolved into the documentary equivalent of a family reunion.

127-128. Challenger: The Final Flight (179m, float 19m)
Spoiler
Challenger: The Final Flight: Space for Everyone (2020, 44m)
Challenger: The Final Flight: HELP! (2020, 42m)
Challenger: The Final Flight: A Major Malfunction (2020, 41m)
Challenger: The Final Flight: Nothing Ends Here (2020, 52m)
Interesting how different the perspectives on this are from my wife and I. Like I knew the cause was an O-ring failure; Wife learned that in this doc. What I didn't know was the coverup and controversy that surrounded this tragedy; Wife knew all about the confusion and how there was no info at the time. A solid docuseries for folks interested in spaceflight and/or disasters.
