I guess I better post what I have watched so far. Not watching much as the year draws to a close, but did see some good docs earlier this month.

1-11. The Story of Film: An Odyssey (2011) - Mark Cousins [Total 950 min]
12. Bixa Travesty AKA Tranny Fag (2018) - Kiko Goifman, Claudia Priscilla
13. Paris is Burning (1990) - Jennie Livingston
14. A Spell to Ward Off the Darkness (2013) - Ben Rivers, Ben Russell
15. Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment (1963) - Robert Drew
16. L'île au trésor AKA Treasure Island (2018) - Guillaume Brac
17. The Lumière Brothers' First Films (1996)
18. For Sama (2019) - Edward Watts, Waad Al-Khateab
19. Everest (1998) - David Breashears, Stephen Judson, Greg MacGillivray

I liked Paris is Burning and For Sama. Of course I have heard a lot about The Story of Film and I thought some parts were pretty good, but overall I am a bit more ambivalent. It kind of got off on the wrong foot, IMO, when he completely disregarded Oscar Micheaux's contributions to early Black cinema.

157. Kannapolis, N.C. (1941)
Stray observations: Two scenes stick out to me amid all the fake smiles and Americana. The first features a guy passing out flyers on a street corner and multiple people just throw them down on the ground right in front of him right after he's given it to them. Good to know that man's contempt for man was alive and kicking in 1941. The other is just a moment where a young black woman is so opposed to being filmed she sprints down the road and ducks behind a car. It's just a very candid, human moment amidst all the cheesy posing. Overall though, this is mainly of historical value, not terribly watchable.

Image
158. Thoth (2002)
This guy takes the "you do you" creed to heart hardcore. I liked when he started whooping it up on Wall Street.

Image
159. Creating the Lord of the Rings Symphony: A Composer's Journey Through Middle-Earth (2004)
This was a live concert of Howard Shore and the Lord of the Rings Symphony concert interspersed with Howard Shore's comments on the writing of the score. If you dig the epic score from these films, this will be right up your alley.

Image
160-163. The Beatles Anthology E1-8 (1995)
My wife: "How long is this?"
Me: "What?"
My wife: "What do you mean what? The thing that's been on all day!"
Me: "Oh, I dunno... like 10 hours or so?"
My Wife: ....
So I don't think my wife, not being the biggest fan of the Beatles, appreciated me watching this on the main TV in our living room for the better part of two days (particularly on Christmas Eve when she would probably rather be watching something like Elf, which we watched after it was over anyway). Regardless, this is a great watch for fans, featuring lots of interviews, full song performances and other archival clips, chock full of info about the Fab Four. I remember actually catching bits and pieces of this on TV back when it originally aired but never watched the whole thing, so it was good to finally catch up.

Image
164. Hannah Gadsby: Douglas (2020)
Very clever and very funny. I enjoyed this one quite a bit more than her first special.

Image
165. The Fantasy Film Worlds of George Pal (1985)
This was a very good doc on producer/director/animator/visionary George Pal by Arnold Leibovit, who not only directed this doc but has taken a major role in preserving and remastering Pal's early Puppetoon work as well.

Image
166. ABC Africa (2001)
Abbas Kiarostami takes a small digital camera to Uganda and films children who's parents have died of AIDS. Yes, at times it does feel like an extended version of those Save a Child for Pennies a Day commercials, but it also is a good example of how people persevere in the face of overwhelming tragedy. It does the heart good to see these kinds just running around and playing like normal kids, seeing that at the end of the day, maybe they'll be ok.

Image
167. I Am Santa Claus (2014)
I didn't watch much yesterday for Christmas. A chunk of the day was taken up with family stuff, plus I needed to watch a great Christmas movie: Deadly Games a.k.a. Dial Code Santa Claus (which Home Alone totally ripped off). But I did want to work in at least one Christmas-themed doc, and this one did the trick. It basically follows several different guys, including well-known WWE wrestler Mick Foley a.k.a. Mankind as they prepare to dress as Santa for the holidays. It's a fun doc and does a good job showing the human side of Santas who come from all walks of life.

From condemned men who were wrongfully convicted to painful methods of execution, this provides a convincing case against capital punishment. It may have been interesting to hear more from the flipside of the coin; while the film makes it very clear why the death penalty is wrong, it becomes hard to understand why anybody would support it in the first place. Powerful stuff though with the film highlighting how "murder is murder", no matter legality.

While the formula is not quite as fresh this time round, this is in many ways superior to the first film, permitting its protagonist some deep character growth and introspection with an estranged father/daughter angle handled extremely well. Maria Bakalova is superb as the daughter too, often upstaging her on-screen father with her deadpan reactions and deeply ingrained beliefs about female inferiority that are slowly challenged.

71. The Untold History of the United States: Prologue Chapter A - World War I, the Russian Revolution & Woodrow Wilson (2013 / Oliver Stone) 5/10
The Untold History of the United States: Prologue: Chapter B - 1920-1940, Franklin D.Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin (2013) / Oliver Stone) 5/10
72. The Untold History of the United States: Chapter 1: World War Two (2012 / Oliver Stone) 5/10
I think I've given up on this after three episodes. Stone's narration, listless yet too-rapid, is so unengaging. Its like having a encyclopaedia entry read out for an hour at a time. It really needed a more professional narrator and interviews with other subjects.
If I'm remembering correctly, I had the same reaction to this. I just couldn't get through it.
Good to hear, I thought i might have just been experiencing history fatigue after having watched a lot about that period.

107. The War Room (1993 / Chris Hegedus; D. A. Pennebaker) 7/10

Clive James's Postcard from... Berlin (1995 / Robert Payton) 6/10
111. A Wonderful Life (1989 / Christopher Sykes) 6/10
112. Hidden Colors (2011 / Tariq Nasheed) 1/10
Comically delusional exercise in cultural appropriation from social media troll Nasheed. The gist is that basically everything, from the wheel to the Russian language to civilisation itself, was invented by black people.
113. Chefs' Burnt Bits (2020) 3/10
Arena: Edward Said: The Idea of Empire (1993 / Francis Hanly; Tim May) 6/10
114. Obsession: Radical Islam's War Against the West (2005 / Wayne Kopping) 7/10

119. Men of Ideas: Philosophy and Literature (1978) 6/10
Have I Got 30 Years for You (2020 / Matt Fisher) 6/10
120. Fire at Sea (2016 / Gianfranco Rosi) 4/10
Set on the small Italian island of Lampedusa during the European immigration crisis. Weirdly, Rosi constructs this in the style of a narrative film akin to something, say, Ulrich Seidl would make. The stylistic aspects and focus on the sleepy life of the Lampedusans makes for an artificial experience that doesn't really encourage compassion for the largely passive migrant masses.
121. The Red Pill (2016 / Cassie Jaye) 6/10
Set in the movement known as men's rights activism (MRA); a movement that campaigns for fair treatment for men in a society where they believe feminism has moved from being about basic equality between the sexes to being a constant, ongoing battle against perceived structural issues in an all-encompassing 'patriarchy'. Beyond a few fleeting references to rape apology (which are later clarified) and some lesser unsavoury attitudes, I couldn't see why anyone would have any major issues with what these people were arguing. But when Jaye gives their opponents the floor, despite being reputable figures (e.g. a professor, a magazine editor) they're generally arrogantly dismissive of, if not militantly hostile to, the MRA's concerns. Judging by the other feminist and pro-gay films she's made, Jaye doesn't seem to be a shill, but this does play out as a predictable 'journey' of learning about MRA, ultimately cumulating in her abandoning the identity of 'feminist' (hence the title).
122. Borderless (2019 / George Llewelyn-John, Caolan Robertson) 5/10
123. Religulous (2008 / Larry Charles) 6/10
The Magus of Messkirch: Martin Heidegger (1989 / Ulrich Boehm, Rüdiger Safranski) 6/10
124. Hole in the Soul (1993 / Dušan Makavejev) 5/10
125. A Hole in the Head (1998 / Eli Kabillio) 7/10
An interesting look at the bizarre practice of trepanning: drilling a hole into your skull with the intent of getting high from the resultant relief of blood pressure on the brain.
126. Digilante (2016 / Mike Nayna) 5/10
The Fourth Industrial Revolution (2016 / Marta Chierego) 3/10
Open to the World (2020 / Miiranda July) 4/10
Talking Pictures: Hollywood Actresses (2015) 6/10
127. Zoo (2007 / Robinson Devor) 3/10
This was remarkably tedious for a film about a man who died after having sex with a horse. For some reason the director chose to pointlessly obfuscate the story among non-linear narrative, lack of clarity about who's talking, and irrelevant anecdotes. Maybe he felt this matched the shady nature of the zoophile lifestyle, but I don't think it worked.
128. 13th (2016 / Ava DuVernay) 3/10
A film about the increasing incarceration rate in America that creates a neat, broad-brush narrative of oppression against the black population while barely touching on the subject of criminality, unless it's to imply that it's the result of socio-historical forces. The veneration of convicted accomplice to murder Assata Shakur was particularly tasteless.

39 minutes carried forward.

Civilisation: The Skin of Our Teeth

1. The Day the Dinosaurs Died (2017 / Nick Green; Ben Lawrie; Toby Macdonald) 6/10
Less about the dinosaurs themselves than about the effects of the immense asteroid that landed off the coast of Mexico, which is believed to have brought about the dinosaurs' extinction. Some interesting points on how geologists deduce the effect of the impact from the remaining evidence.
2. Stories from the Stone Age: Daily Bread (2003 / Roger Scholes) 8/10
Stories from the Stone Age: Urban Dream (2003 / Roger Scholes) 8/10
3. Stories from the Stone Age: Waves of Change (2003 / Roger Scholes) 8/10
Excellent series on man in the Stone Age, the gradual but often pivotal innovations as he moved from hunter-gatherer to farmer to city-dweller. No doubt overly simplified (it's mostly linear and focuses primarily on the Middle East and Europe), but very clearly laid out.
Civilisation: The Skin of Our Teeth (1969 / Michael Gill) 8/10
4. Civilisation: The Great Thaw (1969 / Peter Montagnon) 7/10
5. Handicapped Future (1971 / Werner Herzog) 6/10
6. Huie's Sermon (1981 / Werner Herzog) 6/10
Recording of a sermon given by a charismatic Brooklyn preacher. Interesting for his frenzied delivery and for how several of the topics he touches on (transgenderism, economic crashes, green energy, environmental damage) are still at the forefront of discussion today.
7. Diego Maradona (2019 / Asif Kapadia) 6/10
This wasn't bad but a little disappointing, particularly when contrasted with Kapadia's earlier 'sporting legend' documentary Senna. There wasn't enough about why Maradona was a great footballer - little input from fellow footballers - and too much mundane home movie footage, which seems to have been one of the film's main selling points, so that the football became more a backdrop to the character study. But aside from the controversies, Maradona doesn't seem to have been an interesting enough character to sustain the devotion the film lavishes on him. A small, but persisting, annoyance was the use of sound effects to accompany every kick and punch in the on-pitch footage.

21. Andrew Marr's History of the World: Age of Extremes (2012 / Guy Smith) 6/10
Not really a history of the world - how could it be? - instead a series of dramatic re-enactments (around six per episode) of significant events in history, ranging from Stone Age people migrating out of Africa to the Deep Blue vs. Garry Kasparov chess match in the 1990s, accompanied by Marr's narration in various modern day locales. Inevitably quite Eurocentric, but world history often is. Marr's goofy presenting style and snarkiness are quite annoying.

Without Walls: Hell's Angel: Mother Teresa (1994 / Jenny Morgan) 7/10
A scathing hatchet job on the Albanian nun by everyone's favourite contrarian, Christopher Hitchens. Watching this in 2020, I get similar vibes from how the media and governments received Teresa 30+ years ago to how they do Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg now. Unfortunately the 25 minute runtime doesn't allow for much depth.

49. The Birth of the Tramp (2013 / Serge Bromberg; Eric Lange) 6/10
A decent overview of Charlie Chaplin's early years, from childhood up until the early '20s. It was interesting to learn about other performers creating blatant, shot-for-shot counterfeits of Chaplin's films, including a female tramp (complete with moustache).

55. The World at War: Japan: 1941-1945 (1974 / Hugh Raggett) 8/10
The World at War: Pacific: February 1942-July 1945 (1974 / John Pett) 7/10
56. The World at War: The Bomb: February-September 1945 (1974 / David Elstein) 7/10
57. The World at War: Reckoning: 1945... and After (1974 / Jerome Kuehl) 8/10
The World at War: Remember (1974 / Jeremy Isaacs) 7/10
Excellent, broad overview of WW2, narrated by Laurence Olivier. The way it's constructed - with episodes focusing on particular themes, theatres and events, rather than a straight chronological account - helps make things easy to follow. It wasn't until watching that I realised just how much of the war I'd already imbibed through various channels (high school, cultural references, movies, the odd documentary) without ever having strictly studied it.
58. Russia 1917: Countdown to Revolution (2017 / Renny Bartlett) 3/10
Pretty awful account of the lead up to the Russian Revolution. The talking heads often just spout unedifying generalisations, which makes me wonder how expert they are on the subject. The hammy dramatisations are the worst part, however.59. Ways of Seeing: Part One (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10
I Am Not a Freak (1987 / Kirby Dick) 5/10
60. Ways of Seeing: Part Two (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10
Ways of Seeing: Part Three (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10
61. Ways of Seeing: Part Four (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10
An Ocean Apart: Hats Off to Mr Wilson (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
62. The God Who Wasn't There (2005 / Brian Flemming) 3/10
63. The Soviet Story (2008 / Edvins Snore) 6/10
64. Hellstorm (2015 / Kyle Hunt) 2/10
Neo-Nazi take on Allied violence during WW2. The narrator says at the outset that they make no attempt to analyse the violent actions of the Axis, but this means the criticisms of several Allied actions are near worthless as they are divorced from context. Worse still, I'm suspicious about many of the claims and quotes given throughout the film. Searching for several of them on Google returned results only for this film and the book on which it was based, which leads me to suspect they are fake. No experts are interviewed.
65. An Ocean Apart: Home in Pasadena (1988 / Adam Curtis) 5/10
66. An Ocean Apart: Here Come The British! Bang! Bang! (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
An Ocean Apart: Trust Me To The Bitter End (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
67. An Ocean Apart: If You Don't Like Our Peaches, Quit Shaking Our Tree (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
68. An Ocean Apart: Under The Eagle's Wing (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
An Ocean Apart: Turning Up The Volume (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
69. Men of Ideas: The Ideas of Chomsky (1978) 7/10
70. The Killing of America (1981 / Sheldon Renan; Leonard Schrader) 4/10
A mondo film tour, via news footage, through many of the most high-profile American killings, from the Kennedy assassination to John Lennon's death. Although it has a serious approach, I felt the way it gloried in frequent scenes of graphic violence undermined the supposed anti-gun message it purports to carry.
73. Liverpool FC: The 30-Year Wait (2020 / Louis Myles) 5/10
74. Leaving Neverland (2019 / Dan Reed) 7/10
75. Square One: Michael Jackson (2019 / Danny Wu) 3/10
76. Living with Michael Jackson: A Tonight Special (2003 / Julie Shaw) 5/10
77. The Michael Jackson Interview: The Footage You Were Never Meant to See (2003) 4/10
78. Michael Jackson: Chase the Truth (2019 / Jordan Hill) 5/10
79. Neverland Firsthand: Investigating the Michael Jackson Documentary (2019 / Eli Pedraza) 4/10
It's odd with these Jackson documentaries. I finished Reed's film more or less convinced the allegations were true. I think that's partly a consequence of the four hour duration, giving you plenty of time to become absorbed in the story, plus the fact that you're solely ensconced with the accusers and their families the whole time, all of whom seem very believable, plus the ethereal production style - gentle score and copious floating drone shots. But then afterwards you kind of snap out of it and consider the selective editing and other choices that must have gone into it. The pro-Jackson films in response to it were more blatantly skewed in his favour, often going into praise of Jackson that adds nothing to his case, but there were certain worthwhile points made, particularly in Hill's film regarding inconsistencies, if not downright falsehoods, in the accusers' stories.
They Do Not Exist (1974 / Mustafa Abu Ali) 3/10
Talking Movies: Bette Davis Special (2020) 6/10
80. Kissinger (2011 / Adrian Pennick) 6/10
81. The Trials of Henry Kissinger (2002 / Eugene Jarecki) 7/10
82. Panorama: An Interview with H.R.H. the Princess of Wales (1995) 6/10
This Week: Death on the Rock (1988) 6/10
83. Diana: The Mourning After (1998 / Mark Soldinger) 7/10
The other Hitchens documentary I watched this month on Mother Teresa brought to mind contemporary analogues. This one did the same. Recalling the mass hysteria and media monomania that arose in the wake of Diana's death put me in mind of George Floyd's death this year and the 'Black Lives Matter' derangement that followed. What was different in Diana's death was the absence of social media. The similarities are superficial, but both gripped people in a media-fuelled frenzy.
84. Unlawful Killing (2011 / Keith Allen) 3/10
85. Obedience (1962 / Stanley Milgram) 7/10

99. Terrorstorm (2006 / Alex Jones) 4/10
100. 7/7 Ripple Effect (2007 / Muad Dib) 1/10
Some doofus attempts to prove the '7/7' London bombings were a false flag operation.

Panorama: White Fright: Divided Britain (2018 / Matthew Hill) 7/10
106. Panodrama (2019 / Tommy Robinson) 3/10
Polarising English nationalist Tommy Robinson documents his dealings with BBC documentary series Panorama as they attempt to create a 'takedown' film of him. I don't know the specifics of Robinson well, but he seems like an unpleasant, dishonest individual in several ways, who frequently ends up vindicated and cast as a victim thanks largely to the underhand treatment he receives at the hands of the media and his opponents. This film demonstrates that quite well. It's amateurish and Robinson is clearly no intellect, talking incoherently at a rambling pace while making sweeping, dubious claims, but thanks to the arrogance of Panorama reporter John Sweeney constantly putting his foot in his mouth, he comes out of this looking like the wronged party.

168. Welfare (1975)
I don't know why I put off watching this. Wiseman films, despite their mundane premises, are generally very watchable, and this one is no different. I think some see these fly-on-the-wall type docs as a kind of lazy way out, but what they don't realize is that in some ways these are the hardest to make compelling. You don't have narration to anchor the narrative. You don't have helpful transitions. You just have hundreds if not thousands of hours of footage, and it becomes a Herculean editing task to find amidst the dross the heart of what you are trying to convey and piece it together in an engaging way. And this is what Wiseman excels at more than many documentarians I've seen. I never got bored watching this despite it being 2.5 hours and made up almost entirely of people arguing about welfare checks. I will say though it did cause my anxiety to elevate... So much red tape...

169. Tales of the Uncanny (2020)
I really enjoyed this well-made doc focused on anthology horror films. David Gregory set out to make this doc right before COVID hit and what at first seemed like a curse ended up more as a blessing. He was able through the use of Zoom to get far more interviews (61 of them to be exact) than he ever intended to since people had nothing to do but sit at home. The general premise is that he asked everyone what their favorite anthology films and segments of anthology films were and used that as a jumping to go through the entire history of horror anthologies. I generally really like watching anthologies for whatever reason, so this was right up my alley.

170. Perfect Bid: The Contestant Who Knew Too Much (2017)
This was a pretty fun story of a guy who basically would memorize prices of items on The Price Is Right game show and attend tapings to help people. It prominently features him telling his whole story with sections detailing the history and behind the scenes anecdotes of The Price Is Right as well. Very easy, entertaining watch.

171. L'enfer d'Henri-Georges Clouzot (2009)
172. They Saw Inferno (2010)
Sometimes a director's vision can grow to such proportions that it threatens to cause the whole production to implode. Some of these productions end up getting made despite the difficulties (see Heart of Darkness or Burden of Dreams) and some get abandoned due to various factors and fall into the "What If" realm (like Jodorowsky's Dune and up until recently Terry Gilliam's Man Who Killed Don Quixote). Clouzot's L'enfer falls squarely into this latter category with much of the film remaining unshot due to a cascading series of difficulties on set. A combination of the sweltering heat which led to the lead actor quitting after ten days, Clouzot's outsized demands of his actors to perform mundane details over and over again with seemingly no clear direction of what he wanted and ultimately Clouzot's heart attack which effectively put a nail in the coffin of a production that seemed very unlikely to be completely anyway. The footage that was completed though is fascinatingly avant-garde, much more so than anything else I've seen of Clouzot, who I have a great fondness for, which mirrors but predates the psychedelic visuals movement of the late '60s with swirling colors, strange lighting and disquieting imagery. They Saw Inferno is a one-hour follow-up included as an extra on the blu-ray that basically goes into more details of the production and additional anecdotes that would lead to the demise of the film. Incidentally, Claude Chabrol would end up making a much more traditionally staged version of L'enfer based on Clouzot's script years later and is a solid film in its own right but one radically different than what Clouzot was envisioning.

174. Red Squad (1972)
This agitprop doc acts as a kind of expose on the "Red Squad", a group of special police that seemed to exist to profile protestors in the '60s and '70s. It's a scattered mess of a narrative but does contain some mildly interesting parts to it like when the filmmakers start confronting various plainclothes officers and asking them if they're cops to annoy them.

I'm not sure if I buy the thesis of this miniseries (that Epstein got away with so much for so long through buying his way out) and a surveillance/blackmail angle mentioned towards the end of the fourth episode is really intriguing and I wish it was explored more. As is, this is reasonably compelling. Some of the testimony becomes a bit repetitive, but I think that's on-point; as one 'survivor' states, of course he wouldn't remember her amidst hundreds of women.

I needed James Brown in my life to exorcise this year, and in 'The T.A.M.I. Show' I got 18 minutes of the Godfather of Soul singing, dancing (as fast as any human could possibly be), leaping, crying, screaming, dying and resurrecting (several times!); one of the greatest performances ever registered by astonished cameras, but what really amazes me is how in absolute control he is of the stage, the audience and all media (no way he'll leave his performance in the hands of film editors, he is his own editor!),

09. 1.0* - One Hundred Children Waiting for a Train [Cien Niños Esperando un Tren] by Ignacio Agüero (1988)

A documentary about the wonders of cinema, seen through the eyes of a group of about 100 Chilean kids who've never watched a film before. Each Saturday to go to a class where they learn about the technical background, about genres and actors. They watch and ultimately create their personal film. I'm not a big fan of art praising art, so this documentary wasn't really for me. I do like the initiative, it's nice to give these kids a chance to see something more of the world, but that doesn't make it necessarily fun to watch them do it, not does it mean that cinema is the best way to do it. In the end, there's not much of a point to this film. There's a million ways to stimulate kids' creativity, the focus on the history of cinema is something that would've irked me no end when I was a kid and the things that the kids have to say aren't all that interesting. But if you need something that tells you cinema is wholesome and good for humanity, you can't go wrong with this one.

xx. 0.5* - The Cry of Jazz by Edward Bland (1959)

After seeing this, I had to double-check whether this documentary wasn't just some ironic riff on the usual racial discussions happening in America, but apparently it was meant to be 100% serious. Maybe it was more groundbreaking 60 years ago, but I found it really hard to sit through. Jazz is used as a template to explain the black communities and their plight. It starts off quite theoretical, with a little introduction into the world of jazz, but it quickly ventures into racial stereotyping, with strange and almost poetic parallels between drawn between jazz and their creators. I found the narrative extremely farfetched, the faux discussions cringeworthy and the message way too forceful. The second half in particular ventures into territory that feels like the director has been navel-gazing for just a fraction too long. Again, this kind of provocation might've been useful/interesting in the 50s, now it's just crazy talk.

175. The Creeping Garden (2014)
Surprisingly engrossing documentary about slime molds. I knew next to nothing about them going into this but found the combination of practical explanations coupled with cool, abstract fractal visuals and dissonant, minimalist score to be entrancing.

Image
176. We Are X (2016)
Very good doc covering the decades long history of one of the biggest bands in the world to come out of Japan and the various highs and lows of their career which is some ways mirrors that of other band documentaries like drinking, partying and death of band members but deviates in interesting ways as well (lead singer was drawn away from the band by a cult? huh...). I tend to dig X Japan's music, so this one was a solid watch in general.

Image
177. Hitler's Hollywood (2017)
Doc that profiles German cinema during the era of Hitler's reign between mid thirties to 1945 and the impact his rule had over the content and culture of the populous. I thought it was a quite well-put together film although I think I may watch it again at some point with the German narrator. The English narration was very flat and unengaging in a very thick German accent.

Image
178. Cha ma gu dao xi lie a.k.a. Tea-Horse Road Series: Delamu (2004)
Very poetic and gracefully filmed doc on aboriginal people found in remote regions of the Tea Road travel route in southern Asia. I thought it did a very good job depicting the culture, and one thing I appreciated is that is even offered a dissenting view of the romanticized view of the caravans with the teacher toward the end of the film who recognized she didn't have much of a future in such an isolated community and wanted to leave to find a husband.

Image
179. Paris mil neuf cent (1947)
A jaunty overview of Parisian culture and history at the turn of the century using clips from silent films of the era with voiceover to give sense of time and place. It was fine although the narration felt a little dated in its phrasing which led it to be less informative than I thought it could be.

180b. Let's Rap Fire Safety (2000)
180c. Rock 'N Learn: Multiplication Rap (1998)
180d. Show Off! How to Be Cool at Parties (1986)
Help! I'm drowning in post-irony kitsch! Wendy's Grill Skill is a training video shown to employees back in 1989 to train them on how to cook burgers on the grill. Yes, it has copious rapping and a white guy trying to talk "street". Let's Rap Fire Safety is a barrage of painfully awkward rapping on what to do in case of fire complete with Jason Alexander as an animated, talking fire alarm (did he have some kind of PSA quota to meet?). Multiplication Rap is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Relentlessly uncool white people teach multiplication tables in the most boring way possible. Show Off! How to be Cool at Parties features Malcolm Jamal Warner and a slew of cornball, unfunny comedians showing how to do basic magic tricks and really stupid simple party gags that I can only assume is targeted to mentally handicapped dogs. Do I seriously need a step-by-step guide on how to do the "pretend to walk down the stairs" gag? I would love to see a sequel to this video that features a kid who took all of these people's advice, did all of these tricks at a party, and then got the shit beat out of him for being relentlessly lame-tacular.

I should really give this a try. It's made by Jasper Sharp, one of the few famed Asian film critics. The dude loves slime and mold more than he loves Asian cinema, at least looking at his Facebook page :D

Fantastic. Everything told from primary sources and great footage. My grandfather was from Manchester, but was too young for WWI. It was really nostalgic to hear that old British way of talking with their phrases and attitudes.

175. The Creeping Garden (2014)
Surprisingly engrossing documentary about slime molds. I knew next to nothing about them going into this but found the combination of practical explanations coupled with cool, abstract fractal visuals and dissonant, minimalist score to be entrancing.
I should really give this a try. It's made by Jasper Sharp, one of the few famed Asian film critics. The dude loves slime and mold more than he loves Asian cinema, at least looking at his Facebook page :D
Yea, it does seem like a strange combination of interests. When I looked at the director I thought, 'that name looks so familiar...'. When I looked him up, I was like oh yea, he wrote that Midnight Eye Asian Cinema book with Tom Mes that I have sitting right next to my bed right now.

And yes, he does indeed seem SUPER into slime molds.

17a. 79 Primaveras (Alvarez, 1969). 24 mins.
17b. Les Raquetteurs (Brault & Groulx, 1958). 14 mins.
17c. Housing Problems (Elton & Ansley, 1935). 14 mins.
17d. New Earth (Ivens, 1933). 29 mins.
Various shorts, from a tribute to Ho Chi Minh, snowshoers(!) having fun, appalling slum in Britain and land reclamation on a large scale in the Netherlands.

18. Waiting for Fidel (Rubbo, 1974). This was an odd one, it's literally an unofficial Canadian delegation filming their trip to Cuba to interview Fidel Castro. The filmmakers argue with the people that are in the "delegation" (a millionaire and a socialist politician) and it's all a bit weird, to be honest. One is overly critical of everything he sees, while the other defends everything uncritically.

19. Crisis: Behind a Presidential Commitment (Drew, 1963). I thought this would be about the Cuban Missile crisis, but it's about the desegregation in the South. It was really cool to see what was happening multiple places at once because the cameras were everywhere.

20. Powaqqatsi (Reggio, 1988). Undoubtedly beautiful, but I really want some context to accompany the pretty images.

Spoiler
1. Iron Maiden: Flight 666 (Dunn, 2009).
2. Foo Fighters: Back and Forth (Moll, 2011).

10. The City (Steiner & van Dyke, 1939).

16. Time Indefinite (McElwee, 1993).
17a. 79 Primaveras (Alvarez, 1969). 24 mins.

Through the lens of her life, a White Southern woman working passionately on issues of social justice, we see the movement and her role in it, advocating to White people that they need to take a hard look at themselves and realize it's in everyone's best interest to advance social justice. Definitely worth watching, if you get a chance.

Side note: my wife worked for the Anne Braden institute in grad school, so she can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about this.

113. Mascots (2016) 5/10
A Christopher Guest mockumentary, this is about a Mascots competition. This just lacked the charm of much of the rest of his work, in that you never really care about anything. Not funny enough to work as a comedy, not character driven enough, just meh.

114. Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999) 8/10
Rewatch because I love this film. My 5th rewatch since I started tracking this 4.5 years ago.

I think max recommended this a few months ago. Engrossing stuff. I knew nothing about the actual case beforehand and it was riveting watching the self-described "internet nerds" place all the clues together through reverse image searches, posting on niche interest forums and re-listening to music/re-watching key films. Pretty chilling too with some of the directions it ends up going in. Still not sure who anonymously gave them the name. Was it him?

Apparently, I'm not a fan of the "piece of shit loser has a camera and decides to make a self-indulgent film" genre. This was boring. Too long. Too wandering. And made me hate Southern US culture more than I already did. No one likeable. The unique perspective was the only interesting point, but good god this was a slog.

116. Diary (1983) 5/10
Speaking of slogs... this was better. I tend to agree with flavo's review earlier in the thread. It's interesting enough if you have a pretty strong interest in the area, but at 5.5 hours, it's too much.

117. Misc: (102m, 22m floated)
Wasn't That a Time (1962, 27m)
Songs 1-8 (1964, 24m)
Love Fraud: You Just Gotta Trust Me (2020, 51m)
Songs were my Brakhage binge for the year. Love Fraud was the first episode of a Showtime miniseries about a serial marrying conman being hunted by his many wives; interesting enough, but not so interesting I wanted to sign up for a Showtime trial.

Wasn't That a Time was a really interesting find. Included as an extra on the Anne Braden: Southern Patriot DVD, this was a 1962 documentary short that chronicled three people being investigated for crimes by the House Un-American Activities Committee. Barbara Sherwood (who killed herself rather than testify), Carl Braden (convicted), and Pete Seeger (convicted), who wrote and sand the titular song. Interesting look into the anti-communist bent in the US and the social justice movement at the time.

Right? Weird and fascinating. Like you, I had no idea anything about the case going in and was on the edge of my metaphorical seat. Had to turn away at the animal torture clips, but was engrossed otherwise.

10. 1.5* - The Battle of Britain by Frank Capra, Anthony Veiller (1944)

One of the infamous war propaganda films directed by Frank Capra. Best known for his light-hearted feelgood dramas, the US army asked Capra to direct some uplifting and energizing documentaries that would bring hope to all those fighting the Nazi armies (from home and/or in the trenches). This episode focuses on the Battle of Britain (duh), Hitler's first big defeat that would put a big dent into the air of invincibility that the Nazi army had created for itself. No doubt the broad lines of this documentary are accurate enough, but I wouldn't pay too much attention to any particular details. It's quite clear that this was a film with a specific mission. Because it's so energetic it's actually quite fun to watch, pretty different from most war documentaries, but that doesn't change the fact that this is little more than a piece of dedicated propaganda, meant to raise the spirit of all those fighting in the war. A fun curiosity, but nothing more.
