A lot of information about the past, present, and future of black owned businesses is covered while breaking it down by industry and not shying away from how racism has constantly been an obstacle and how blacks have constantly overcome it.

31. Human Nature (Adam Bolt-2019) USA 36 checks

A great explanation as to what CRISPR is, how it works, and all the ethical concerns that it raises about human engineering.

82. Panorama: An Interview with H.R.H. the Princess of Wales (1995) 6/10
This Week: Death on the Rock (1988) 6/10
83. Diana: The Mourning After (1998 / Mark Soldinger) 7/10
The other Hitchens documentary I watched this month on Mother Teresa brought to mind contemporary analogues. This one did the same. Recalling the mass hysteria and media monomania that arose in the wake of Diana's death put me in mind of George Floyd's death this year and the 'Black Lives Matter' derangement that followed. What was different in Diana's death was the absence of social media. The similarities are superficial, but both gripped people in a media-fuelled frenzy.

99. Terrorstorm (2006 / Alex Jones) 4/10
100. 7/7 Ripple Effect (2007 / Muad Dib) 1/10
Some doofus attempts to prove the '7/7' London bombings were a false flag operation.

102. Men of Ideas: The Philosophy of Language (1978) 5/10

105. Panorama: Hate on the Street (2017 / Mark Alden) 5/10
Panorama: White Fright: Divided Britain (2018 / Matthew Hill) 7/10
106. Panodrama (2019 / Tommy Robinson) 3/10
Polarising English nationalist Tommy Robinson documents his dealings with BBC documentary series Panorama as they attempt to create a 'takedown' film of him. I don't know the specifics of Robinson well, but he seems like an unpleasant, dishonest individual in several ways, who frequently ends up vindicated and cast as a victim thanks largely to the underhand treatment he receives at the hands of the media and his opponents. This film demonstrates that quite well. It's amateurish and Robinson is clearly no intellect, talking incoherently at a rambling pace while making sweeping, dubious claims, but thanks to the arrogance of Panorama reporter John Sweeney constantly putting his foot in his mouth, he comes out of this looking like the wronged party.

0 minutes carried forward.

Civilisation: The Skin of Our Teeth

1. The Day the Dinosaurs Died (2017 / Nick Green; Ben Lawrie; Toby Macdonald) 6/10
Less about the dinosaurs themselves than about the effects of the immense asteroid that landed off the coast of Mexico, which is believed to have brought about the dinosaurs' extinction. Some interesting points on how geologists deduce the effect of the impact from the remaining evidence.
2. Stories from the Stone Age: Daily Bread (2003 / Roger Scholes) 8/10
Stories from the Stone Age: Urban Dream (2003 / Roger Scholes) 8/10
3. Stories from the Stone Age: Waves of Change (2003 / Roger Scholes) 8/10
Excellent series on man in the Stone Age, the gradual but often pivotal innovations as he moved from hunter-gatherer to farmer to city-dweller. No doubt overly simplified (it's mostly linear and focuses primarily on the Middle East and Europe), but very clearly laid out.
Civilisation: The Skin of Our Teeth (1969 / Michael Gill) 8/10
4. Civilisation: The Great Thaw (1969 / Peter Montagnon) 7/10
5. Handicapped Future (1971 / Werner Herzog) 6/10
6. Huie's Sermon (1981 / Werner Herzog) 6/10
Recording of a sermon given by a charismatic Brooklyn preacher. Interesting for his frenzied delivery and for how several of the topics he touches on (transgenderism, economic crashes, green energy, environmental damage) are still at the forefront of discussion today.
7. Diego Maradona (2019 / Asif Kapadia) 6/10
This wasn't bad but a little disappointing, particularly when contrasted with Kapadia's earlier 'sporting legend' documentary Senna. There wasn't enough about why Maradona was a great footballer - little input from fellow footballers - and too much mundane home movie footage, which seems to have been one of the film's main selling points, so that the football became more a backdrop to the character study. But aside from the controversies, Maradona doesn't seem to have been an interesting enough character to sustain the devotion the film lavishes on him. A small, but persisting, annoyance was the use of sound effects to accompany every kick and punch in the on-pitch footage.
8. Civilisation: Romance and Reality (1969 / Michael Gill; Ann Turner) 7/10
Civilisation: Man: the Measure of all Things (1969 / Ann Turner) 6/10

Andrew Marr's History of the World: Revolution (2012 / Robin Dashwood) 6/10
20. Andrew Marr's History of the World: Age of Industry (2012 / Robin Dashwood) 6/10
21. Andrew Marr's History of the World: Age of Extremes (2012 / Guy Smith) 6/10
Not really a history of the world - how could it be? - instead a series of dramatic re-enactments (around six per episode) of significant events in history, ranging from Stone Age people migrating out of Africa to the Deep Blue vs. Garry Kasparov chess match in the 1990s, accompanied by Marr's narration in various modern day locales. Inevitably quite Eurocentric, but world history often is. Marr's goofy presenting style and snarkiness are quite annoying.
America: The First Impact (1972 / Ann Turner) 6/10
22. America: The New Found Land (1972 / Michael Gill) 6/10

35. The World at War: France Falls: May-June 1940 (1973 / Peter Batty) 7/10
So Can I (1975 / Abbas Kiarostami) 5/10
Without Walls: Hell's Angel: Mother Teresa (1994 / Jenny Morgan) 7/10
A scathing hatchet job on the Albanian nun by everyone's favourite contrarian, Christopher Hitchens. Watching this in 2020, I get similar vibes from how the media and governments received Teresa 30+ years ago to how they do Malala Yousafzai and Greta Thunberg now. Unfortunately the 25 minute runtime doesn't allow for much depth.
36. The World at War: Alone: May 1940-May 1941 (1973 / David Elstein) 7/10
The World at War: Barbarossa: June-December 1941 (1973 / Peter Batty) 7/10

47. The World at War: Home Fires: Britain - 1940-1944 (1974 / Angus Calder) 8/10
48. The Eternal Jew (1940 / Fritz Hippler) 4/10
49. The Birth of the Tramp (2013 / Serge Bromberg; Eric Lange) 6/10
A decent overview of Charlie Chaplin's early years, from childhood up until the early '20s. It was interesting to learn about other performers creating blatant, shot-for-shot counterfeits of Chaplin's films, including a female tramp (complete with moustache).
50. The World at War: Inside the Reich: Germany - 1940-1944 (1974 / Neal Ascherson) 8/10
The World at War: Morning: June-August 1944 (1974 / John Pett) 8/10

56. The World at War: The Bomb: February-September 1945 (1974 / David Elstein) 7/10
57. The World at War: Reckoning: 1945... and After (1974 / Jerome Kuehl) 8/10
The World at War: Remember (1974 / Jeremy Isaacs) 7/10
Excellent, broad overview of WW2, narrated by Laurence Olivier. The way it's constructed - with episodes focusing on particular themes, theatres and events, rather than a straight chronological account - helps make things easy to follow. It wasn't until watching that I realised just how much of the war I'd already imbibed through various channels (high school, cultural references, movies, the odd documentary) without ever having strictly studied it.
58. Russia 1917: Countdown to Revolution (2017 / Renny Bartlett) 3/10
Pretty awful account of the lead up to the Russian Revolution. The talking heads often just spout unedifying generalisations, which makes me wonder how expert they are on the subject. The hammy dramatisations are the worst part, however.59. Ways of Seeing: Part One (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10
I Am Not a Freak (1987 / Kirby Dick) 5/10
60. Ways of Seeing: Part Two (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10
Ways of Seeing: Part Three (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10
61. Ways of Seeing: Part Four (1972 / Michael Dibb) 8/10
An Ocean Apart: Hats Off to Mr Wilson (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
62. The God Who Wasn't There (2005 / Brian Flemming) 3/10
63. The Soviet Story (2008 / Edvins Snore) 6/10
64. Hellstorm (2015 / Kyle Hunt) 2/10
Neo-Nazi take on Allied violence during WW2. The narrator says at the outset that they make no attempt to analyse the violent actions of the Axis, but this means the criticisms of several Allied actions are near worthless as they are divorced from context. Worse still, I'm suspicious about many of the claims and quotes given throughout the film. Searching for several of them on Google returned results only for this film and the book on which it was based, which leads me to suspect they are fake. No experts are interviewed.
65. An Ocean Apart: Home in Pasadena (1988 / Adam Curtis) 5/10
66. An Ocean Apart: Here Come The British! Bang! Bang! (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
An Ocean Apart: Trust Me To The Bitter End (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
67. An Ocean Apart: If You Don't Like Our Peaches, Quit Shaking Our Tree (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
68. An Ocean Apart: Under The Eagle's Wing (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
An Ocean Apart: Turning Up The Volume (1988 / Adam Curtis) 6/10
69. Men of Ideas: The Ideas of Chomsky (1978) 7/10
70. The Killing of America (1981 / Sheldon Renan; Leonard Schrader) 4/10
A mondo film tour, via news footage, through many of the most high-profile American killings, from the Kennedy assassination to John Lennon's death. Although it has a serious approach, I felt the way it gloried in frequent scenes of graphic violence undermined the supposed anti-gun message it purports to carry.
71. The Untold History of the United States: Prologue Chapter A - World War I, the Russian Revolution & Woodrow Wilson (2013 / Oliver Stone) 5/10
The Untold History of the United States: Prologue: Chapter B - 1920-1940, Franklin D.Roosevelt, Adolf Hitler and Joseph Stalin (2013) / Oliver Stone) 5/10
72. The Untold History of the United States: Chapter 1: World War Two (2012 / Oliver Stone) 5/10
I think I've given up on this after three episodes. Stone's narration, listless yet too-rapid, is so unengaging. Its like having a encyclopaedia entry read out for an hour at a time. It really needed a more professional narrator and interviews with other subjects.
73. Liverpool FC: The 30-Year Wait (2020 / Louis Myles) 5/10
74. Leaving Neverland (2019 / Dan Reed) 7/10
75. Square One: Michael Jackson (2019 / Danny Wu) 3/10
76. Living with Michael Jackson: A Tonight Special (2003 / Julie Shaw) 5/10
77. The Michael Jackson Interview: The Footage You Were Never Meant to See (2003) 4/10
78. Michael Jackson: Chase the Truth (2019 / Jordan Hill) 5/10
79. Neverland Firsthand: Investigating the Michael Jackson Documentary (2019 / Eli Pedraza) 4/10
It's odd with these Jackson documentaries. I finished Reed's film more or less convinced the allegations were true. I think that's partly a consequence of the four hour duration, giving you plenty of time to become absorbed in the story, plus the fact that you're solely ensconced with the accusers and their families the whole time, all of whom seem very believable, plus the ethereal production style - gentle score and copious floating drone shots. But then afterwards you kind of snap out of it and consider the selective editing and other choices that must have gone into it. The pro-Jackson films in response to it were more blatantly skewed in his favour, often going into praise of Jackson that adds nothing to his case, but there were certain worthwhile points made, particularly in Hill's film regarding inconsistencies, if not downright falsehoods, in the accusers' stories.
They Do Not Exist (1974 / Mustafa Abu Ali) 3/10
Talking Movies: Bette Davis Special (2020) 6/10
80. Kissinger (2011 / Adrian Pennick) 6/10
81. The Trials of Henry Kissinger (2002 / Eugene Jarecki) 7/10

134. Let Me Die a Woman (1977)
This is a curious one. Doris Wishman seems to genuinely want to inform and portray trans people as real people with thoughts and feelings deserving of being understood. But also it's as if the producers demanded some exploitation elements to spice it up for sale to the grindhouse theaters. It is incredibly frank and graphic in places, including an actual live sex change operation, which is what it's known for.

135. Penny Pinchers: The Kings of No-Budget Horror (2017)
Incredibly lo-fi (which is pretty appropriate for the subject matter), this one profiles several low budget, shot-on-video horror filmmakers like Tim Ritter, Donald Farmer, Todd Sheets and Lloyd Kaufman who got their start back in the '80s and '90s and illustrating how these people were able to get films made and distributed on little more than grit and determination. Recommended for those who need some inspiration to make a film but are afraid you don't have the money, time or vision enough to pull it off. You'll leave this one thinking, 'hell, if THESE guys can do it, surely anyone can".

136. Hated: GG Allin & the Murder Junkies (1993)
From director Todd Phillips of The Hangover movies and more recently Joker comes this doc from early in his career on shock rocker GG Allin. If definitely shows GG in his natural habitat getting into all manner of gross shenanigans that he was known for like performing totally nude on stage, provoking the audience, shoving bananas up his ass and other unpleasant things. This isn't bad as a snapshot of GG but honestly I thought the Disgraceland podcast episode on GG as well as the follow-up interview with Michael Alig who was a guest on Geraldo when GG appeared on there painted a more full picture of GG Allin and his possible internal motivations.

Frank Zappa at the height of his talent and powers in this blistering live show with one of his best backing bands. It showcases not only his amazing abilities as a musician but also bandleader and entertainer.

138. Cameraperson (2016)
Essentially a kind of stitched together visual essay of Kirsten Johnson's career and life using footage she has shot over the years on a wide variety of subjects. It's an interesting and engaging format that befits what Johnson is trying to accomplish and gives good insight into what kind of person she is.

140. La commune (Paris, 1871) (2000)
Sigh... The format of this one is interesting, using actors to recreate the Commune workers' revolt of 1871 by having the actors interviewed in character by a documentary film crew off the cuff intercut with news channel segments that represent the ruling class's views on the state of things. While the idea is an interesting one, the execution is exhausting. The movie is at least four hours too long and features a lot of repetitive comments from the actors both in character and as themselves commenting on the current state of political climate and how it parallels the Commune. The second half in particular really drags. Peter Watkins has made much more effective films than this one like The War Game.

14. Forgotten Silver (Jackson, 1995). Charming mockumentary about Colin Mackenzie's overlooked career as a New Zealand film pioneer.

99. Chisholm '72: Unbought & Unbossed (2004) 8/10
I found the story of the first black female to make a serious bid for the democratic nomination for President very inspiring.

100. The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia (2019) 6/10
I feel like this focused on the murder of journalist Khashoggi more than on the Prince. And while that story is important to illustrate the Prince's leadership and the fact that he is a dictator, I still don't feel like I came out knowing much about the powerful man this is named for.

101. After Truth: Disinformation and the Cost of Fake News (2020) 7/10
Definitely scary. Definitely worth watching for anyone who values freedom of the press, journalistic integrity, and facts.

102. Paris Was a Woman (1996) 5/10
This was the story of some of the artists who lived in Paris between the world wars. It wasn't particularly compelling though there was some important lesbian history in it.

103. After Porn Ends 3 (2018) 6/10
I feel like there is more positivity about pornography in this one, very few negative stories and I think that's interesting because it may show how mainstream the industry has become in the U.S. The only people who were down on porn in this one were coming from a religious perspective which I also think is important because it seems to mirror our current world. As a film, they are basically just following a formula of interviews and footage from porn films. There's nothing special about it.

104. Not a Love Story: A Film About Pornography (1981) 6/10
A complete opposite of After Porn Ends, which shows happy actors doing scenes that are soft and sensual, this film shows graphically violent scenes (like one where a guy is pulling hair out of a woman's pubic area while she is chained to a table). However, this film is a piece of history--grounded in a debate that split the Women's Movement in half. I did a few papers in grad school on the organization "Women Against Pornography" yet somehow didn't find this film and I wish I had. This is absolutely based in the arguments they espoused which is that pornography is inherently violent and misogynistic. The images they chose are the worst of the worst and there is no balance with milder forms of pornography. At the time, these groups also had no understanding of the variety of sex work available from totally unforced and untouched (peep shows, most stripping) all the way up to totally forced and often violent. To them it was all bad. That being said--they make many valid points about the way women's bodies are used and abused, and that it's part of a larger problem of misogyny, and an economic system where female options to make a living wage are limited.

105. The Great American Lie (2019) 8/10
This is the third film I've seen from Jennifer Siebel Newsom this month. They are all very well done and I tend to agree with her politically so what's not to like?

106-107. The Ripper (Episodes 1-4) (204 min total, 44 remaining added to previous remainder, 59 min. remaining)
The most interesting thing about this case was the way gender played into it and often devalued the victims in the minds of the public and the police.

This, so much this. Saw it in 2013 (second attempt) and it's still a movie that tires me out just thinking about it.

Neat enough concept, but the high-minded art question isn't for me. Reminded me of Salaam Cinema, but without the intrigue of focusing in on random people auditioning.

99. Not a Love Story: A Film About Pornography (1981)
A pointed view of the pornography debates in the feminism movement of the late 70s/early 80s, but an interesting one. They definitely pointed out some of the more extreme examples and why that was harmful. I didn't agree with all their points, but it was an interesting take and one I appreciated. For a good time, call adwest for a lengthy discussion of the pornography debates of this time.

100. The Great American Lie (2020) 7/10
A really interesting view of systemic barriers to progress in the US governmental and economic systems. Raises a lot of points with a fresh lens on it, and I found it pretty eye-opening. And you know it has to make some good points because there's already evidence of vote-brigading on the IMDB ratings.

101. La région centrale (1971) 4/10
This neat short where a "probe" examines the Canadian wilderness as if it landed on another planet was a really interesting 20-minute concept. But cracking the three-hour mark is a bit... much.

17. Triumph Over Violence (1965)
★ ★ ½
Like In the Year of the Pig, this shows the slow, subtle changes of a country’s nationalism. This time it’s the rise of Nazi Germany. Unlike Pig, this isn’t focused on specific dates and events but a growing tide of subtle shifts that slowly inch a country deep into fascism. That makes it worth a look, but unless you’re interested in the subject, there’s little attempt to gain or hold your attention.

18. Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (2006)
★ ★
Also, more interesting as an idea, this Doc covers a soccer match strictly from the point of view of one player. Maybe if I was interested in soccer or Zinédine Zidane, it would be more interesting, but the game itself is largely unexciting so the director plays around with the sound mix to try to maintain interest.

19. Fata Morgana (1971)
★ ½
This may be my new least favorite Werner Herzog. Not everything deserves to be released. From what I understand, much of the footage was salvaged from an abandoned project. The admittedly beautiful images were gives some music and pseudo-intellectual narration. A director’s commentary would’ve been a less painful idea.

20. Waste Land (2010)
★ ★ ★
I would’ve preferred less about turning garbage into art and more about how and why this location was turned into the world’s largest landfill and how sifting through it for usable items became a way of life for some people.

21. A British Picture (1989)
★ ★ ★
Turns out Ken Russell has a sense of humor. Asked to make a Doc about his career, he turns it into a rather playful parody, casting a small boy in a clown wig to play him and taking pot shots at his intentions and the way him and his films were received over time. In the end, I learned very little about his work, but quite a lot about him, which is better than you could ask for.

Nev Schulman makes for a charismatic subject here; he is a little too gullible to be totally sympathetic, and the film makes it a tad too obvious from early on that something is amiss, but this remains an engrossing tale from start to finish as Nev goes down the metaphorical rabbit hole. It is also a surprisingly humanistic and compassionate film overall, far more interested in documenting human behaviour (especially online) than being critical of anyone involved.

18. Dick Johnson is dead, by Kirsten Johnson (2020) 4/10

It's been a while since a film made me this angry. I understand the trend of first person documentaries, and the needed disclosure of intimacy it requires. But there is, to me, a limit beyond which this can become indecent. By filming her father's decline and demise, and putting it on Netflix, K. Johnson has certainy gone beyond this limit in my eyes. Some things need to remain private. I'm leaving a good grade for technical reasons, I hated this.

81. State Legislature (2007) <-- Meh. Maybe it would have been better if it wasn't Idaho.

It's fun trash documentary TV. They say things, you mostly ignore them, but try to sift some interesting tidbits out here and there. It's like "The CIA did bad things." Yes, I've seen that reported before. Go on. "To make money to increase their black budget." Sure, OK. I've heard that. Makes some sense so far. "Are they funding secret research into lizard immortality to keep our politicians alive forever?" Whoa, there, Tex... maybe have Alex Jones on the show a little less.

108. Bowling for Columbine (2002) 8/10
Rewatch with Wife. IMHO, the high-water mark for Moore. Definitely entertaining, made some really interesting underlying points, and did it in a way that made you angry enough to stay engaged while incredulous enough to tricking your brain into thinking.

109. I, Pastafari: A Flying Spaghetti Monster Story (2019) 6/10
A doc about religious freedom. Fascinating. And so over the top it's fun.

110. Man on Fire (2018) 4/10
Former reverend sets himself on fire to protest a town's massive racism problem. Interesting premise, terrible doc. Here's everything that you need to know, because it's all that was presented:
- White townsfolk acknowledge racism in the past. Say it's not a problem now.
- Black people are terrified to go to the town.
- Reverend's friends say he was committed to social justice, but this was kinda weird.

141. The Language of Shadows - Murnau: The Early Years and Nosferatu (2007)
An informative doc on Murnau's early career with a particular emphasis on Nosferatu (which is exactly what you'd expect from the title). While there's a lot of detailed info I wasn't previously familiar with pertaining to Murnau, it's delivered in a very dry way. The English narrator drones on and on about shooting locations and other minutiae that isn't terribly interesting while sounding a lot like Ben Stein. I think with a better narrator and more creative editing, this could've been one to recommend.

Watch a guy build a cabin, go fishing, sit by a fire... It's very chill and relaxing to watch.

143. Without Lying Down: Frances Marion and the Power of Women in Hollywood (2000)
This was a very good overview of the career of Frances Marion, one of the most successful screenwriters in early Hollywood history as well as a look into how women shaped the success of early Hollywood.

Image
144. Elettra (2015)
A doc about Guglielmo Marconi, pioneer in radio wave technology. It's well-put together if a little low budget and very informative. One of my main issues with it is that they rely heavily on interviews with Marconi's daughter who speaks in English but with a very thick accent which makes it hard to focus. It would have been preferable if they had just allowed her to speak Italian and subtitled it.

Image
145. Wings of Life (2013)
Wings of Life is a Disneynature doc and features many of the hallmarks of the series that have come to typify the more succinct alternative to the large scale BBC nature docs. Beautiful hi-def cinematography that does a remarkable job of capturing moments in nature at it's most electric. This one focuses on flight=based creatures such as the monarch butterfly, the hummingbird and the bee. While it does have some decent information about the subjects, the real draw is just in how it captures very up close these speedy, busy little critters. My kids actually like these Disneynature docs too.

146b. Mummy Dearest: A Horror Tradition Unearthed (1999)
146c. Bud Abbott and Lou Costello Meet the Monsters! (2000)
146d. Unraveling the Legacy of the Mummy (1999)
Here's a block of mini-docs on classic monster flicks. Remembering Fay Wray is primarily a recounting of Fay Wray's career by her daughter with a particular focus on her experiences on Mystery of the Wax Museum. Mummy Dearest is another of Universal's polished overviews of their classic monsters, this one obviously focused on the Mummy franchise and is a solid watch despite not getting into tons of detail on the productions. Abbott & Costello is a satisfying and polished doc on A&C's series of horror comedies with behind the scenes info and details on each of the movies from those involved. Again, it isn't super deep but is a breezy watch. Unraveling the Legacy of The Mummy is basically just a puff piece to market the Brendan Frasier remake. This one is easily skippable.

11. American Factory (Bognar-Reichert, 2019)
A look inside the clash of US and Chinese work practices in a US branch of a Chinese factory. The amount of footage they got of the Chinese bosses unashamedly going about their union-busting is pretty amazing. It's also interesting contextually in the continual decline of working class opportunities through globalisation and automation.

12. Hands on a Hardbody: The Documentary (Bindler, 1997)
I remember seeing a UK reality show on the same premise (Touch the Truck) that came out quite soon after this doc. It's a fun look into the different personalities and twists in what is essentially an endurance competition. The most disappointing part is that they don't have continuous coverage, so a lot of the key moments weren't filmed and are instead talked about it retrospect.

Similar to the Weiner fly-on-the-wall documentary. Watch aghast as Steve Bannon praises German efficiency in Holocaust planning and wonders how Leni Riefenstahl would craft his pro-Trump documentary.

Speaking of Riefenstahl..

34. Underwater Impressions (Leni Riefenstahl-2002) Germany 28 checks

Her final film is a documentary on coral reefs, which she apparently became a big fan of. It's really just a series of footage of underwater wildlife set to Giorgio Moroder synth score. It's beautiful footage, but a little shallow in purpose as it's just a celebration of how beautiful nature is.

I'll probably re-watch this at a later date with my wife who is a big salt water fish tank hobbyist so I can learn more about the subjects she shot.

Titled after an urban legend boogeyman, this independent documentary probes into a series of Staten Island child murders and disappearances and the real life boogeyman alleged culprit. His conviction is quite interesting with the film pointing out some of the unreliable testimony and the fact that he has always denied the charges. At the same time, the filmmakers also postulate how he might have been a member of a cult or had other accomplices.

Relying entirely on archive footage, songs and occasional bouts of text, Adam Curtis attempts to say something important about the USA's role on the world stage in this experimental documentary. Without any voiceover narration, this plays out differently to most of the director's other films and is even a bit hypnotic at times with a real sense of rhythm. This hypnotic quality does, however, result in the film not working very effectively as message movie.

This offers some stunning close-ups of desert critters in action, as well as desert flowers slowly blooming towards the end. As a Disney production though, the project tries a bit too hard to be solid family entertainment with overly descriptive voiceover narration full of over-the-top alliteration ("diminutive dinosaurs who dine on daisies") and some odd bouts of humour - in particular, two scorpions facing off to square dance music with the narrator singing.

The Yorkshire Ripper case seems to have been one of the worst police investigations in history. The Ripper presents some competent work by low and mid level police officers, doesn't dwell on incompetent work done at the same level (a woman's purse with blood on it is found in a region where a serial killer is active, and the officers dispatched to investigate drop their search to answer another call-if this happened, there must be many other failures not mentioned), but the people in charge focus the investigation on their view of the characteristics of the victims rather than the methods of the murderer. They seem to have filed away even the most obviously important evidence without reading or considering it (an inquiry was made to the police in the city of Sunderland after a linguistics expert advised that the voice on a tape that the police believed was from the killer was made by someone from that city; after research and investigation a report was returned from Sunderland indicating (correctly)that they believed that the tape and letters sent to the West Yorkshire police were a hoax based on letters from the Jack the Ripper case in the 1880s).

Although it's a little late, I thought I'd throw a quick shout out to MovieDearest's Strange but True Documentary list on ICM: Here. It is chock full of great docs with some of my favorites on there, and are consistently interesting or worth watching even when I think the subject may not be something I'm into. Thanks MovieDearest whoever you are!

ImageImageImage
147. Najeun moksori a.k.a. The Murmuring (1995)
148. Najeun moksori 2 a.k.a. The Murmuring 2: Habitual Sadness (1997)
149. Sumgyeol - Najeun moksori 3 a.k.a. The Murmuring 3: My Own Breathing (1999)
These three docs collectively profile primarily Korean women (although it features a woman from the Philippines in the third film) who were kidnapped by the Japanese as teenagers during WWII and forced into prostitution and put through unbearable mistreatment at the hands of Japanese soldiers. It also follows their protests, awareness campaigns and crusade to seek restitution from the Japanese government. While each woman's recounting of the torment they went through, sometimes in great detail, is painful to watch, the docs also show their strength and vitality and how they embrace life whether it be joking around with friends or being particularly proud of some harvested pumpkins they grew in their garden. My biggest complaint is around the editing. The films could have been certainly been edited together into a more cohesive whole. Still, I feel they are certainly worth watching regardless for the content and message alone.

Image
150. Kitch's Last Meal (1976)
Dead cat. Ramble ramble ramble.

Image
151. Earth (2007)
Disneynature's pretty blatant attempt to reproduce BBC's Planet Earth in a more compact, digestible and family friendly package is a solid watch with some absolutely beautiful, crisp HD imagery as one would expect narrated by the great James Earl Jones to give the proceedings a certain gravitas. Like Planet Earth itself, I think it's sheer scope in what its trying to cover hurts it a little because it comes across as a lack of focus. Other Disneynature docs like yesterday's Wings of Life or The Crimson Wing that have a much more narrow subject work better in terms of getting that balance of visuals to being informative.

Image
152. Art of the Game: Ukiyo-e Heroes (2017)
This was a pretty good doc about partners who produce traditional Japanese wood block prints of video game characters. One lives in Japan and receives a sketch of the proposed work and then interprets it as a wood carving then ships the carving back to the US for the artist to then do the print, color and sell it. The artwork they produce does look pretty neat in the way it casts characters like Mario in a traditional Edo-period setting. The doc feels a little long and is filmed pretty flatly though.

Image
153. The Frankenstein Files: How Hollywood Made a Monster (2002)
This Universal monster doc, as one would surmise from the title, covers Frankenstein and offers a few interesting nuggets of info in a polished package. It's a little longer than the other monster docs I've watched, but there are more Frankenstein movies than most others so that make sense.

Image
154. REX RAY: How to Make a Rex Ray (2009)
This doc follows mixed media collage artist Rex Ray as he goes about his process to create art. Ray's art has an interesting visual style to it but unfortunately the doc does not. It looks like something that would air on PBS on a Sunday morning.

Image
155. Of Dolls and Murder (2012)
I really liked this one, a doc that delves into forensic science, interspersing dollhouse dioramas that were used for crime scene investigations before more modern forensics techniques came about with interviews with forensic scientists, detectives, coroners and others involved in homicide investigation as they discuss the realities of forensics and how it contrasts with what people see on shows like CSI. It has a lot of in depth details while also feeling well-paced, having the interviews broken up with John Waters narrating the circumstances of the dollhouse crime scenes.

Image
156. Mated (1952)
Good ol' Something Weird Video. I can always depend on them to unearth some hilariously out of touch and out of date relic of the past. This one is basically a sex ed film showing the human development of men and women and culminating in live birth footage of a breach birth and a caesarian section. As one would guess from this kind of movie released in 1952, at times it has ridiculously old-fashioned narration comments like when it describes women on their period sometimes even being too tired to do housework! :satstunned: Despite the incredibly sterile, matter-of-fact narration from a doctor, you can tell it still leans into the exploitive nature of what it's covering at times like how it will show a cavalcade of various nude photos to "illustrate the point" of what the narrator is discussing. Feel free to watch this to laugh at it but don't go in expecting to be terribly informed.

Through candid interviews, this film presents a potent picture of what memory loss is like here and the dynamic of having to rebuild a sense of oneself based on what others have told you. The structure of the project is a tad problematic though; there is so much build-up regarding what a certain secret is that its nature is easy to guess, and consequently what is revealed does not seem too shocking as result. If flawed, this is always engrossing though.

Directed and edited by Bob Dylan himself, this documentary on the musician's UK tour is assembled in a fly-on-the-wall manner with lots of backstage footage and no direct interviews. There are occasional striking moments (Dylan seeming to cry behind his dark glasses) but with far more backstage than concert footage, the whole thing feels random and unfocused with little sense of rhyme or rhythm; as others have said, it feels like a home video.

The first half here is excellent, focused on the myth and mystery behind the musician and the impact that his music had in South Africa during apartheid. The second half of the film (after they manage to contact one of his daughters) is unfortunately far less interesting. We do get to hear more of his excellent music and there are a handful of heartwarming moments, but without the mystery element to pull things through, the second half is less exciting.

10. Ballad of the Little Soldier (1984)
A Herzog documentary that's almost entirely reportage rather than reverie. The Sandinista-Somocista conflict here pulls the Miskito people into a civil war they didn't ask for, leading to the deployment of child soldiers as young as 10 years old. It's short but heartbreaking.

11. Springsteen on Broadway (2018)
Springsteen did a residency at a Broadway theater a few years ago that was meant to last two months but was ultimately extended to a year. As with all Springsteen concerts, most of the tickets were immediately snatched up by bots the moment they went on sale and then hit the resale market at 20x-50x the original price. There was no way I was spending $2,000 on a concert, so I didn't go. Until I saw this filmed version, I thought it was just a solo concert in a smaller venue than the usual Springsteen arena show. But it's not like that at all. The show is more talk than music, with Springsteen sharing reminiscences of his life while occasionally playing selections from his songbook related to the topics he is addressing. Except for two songs he plays alongside his wife, all of the numbers are solo on either piano or acoustic guitar. The results are often very dour. Thunder Road, a song perfectly balanced between sadness and elation, is rendered near tragic here. Born in the USA is little more than a desperate growl, which is what the song was always meant to be. Even Tenth Avenue Freeze Out, as joyous a song as Springsteen ever wrote, is interrupted for a lengthy dirge about deceased friend and bandmate Clarence Clemons. Springsteen spent a good portion of the early 2010s in a deep depression, a problem he's struggled with for most of his life. It's impossible not to see this show, and the memoir he published in 2016 from which some of his anecdotes are apparently drawn, as anything other than a work of catharsis in reaction to his depression and lingering grief over the deaths of Clemons and fellow E streeter Danny Federici. Springsteen eventually works his way back to joy over the course of the show, but its most indelible moments remained his weighty, tearful remembrances of his youth and family.

82. Ballet (1995)
83. The Proving Grounds (2013) <--- only 7 years old, but cool to see some of the top people before they were big.
84. SEC Ready (2014) <--- If you are a Texas A&M fan (I am not) this is a must watch. For a college football fan its pretty good.
85. If God Is Willing and da Creek Don't Rise <--- I am a native of New Orleans and am a sucker for any/all Katrina documentaries.
86. The Garden (2005)
87. Scott's Pizza Tours (2016) <---- much, much better than I was expecting. totally recommend this one for people.
88. Belfast, Maine (1999)
89. High School II (1994)

I am loving all of these Wiseman documentaries. I think people should watch every one of them. I will be clear the are not for everyone, but they are great. They just show the most mundane, normal life and that is totally fascinating to me

108. Kumu Hina (2014) 7/10
This film follows two "māhū" people in Hawaii. "Māhū" means "in the middle" and reminds me a lot of the Native "two-spirit" people or the Indian "Hijra" people. The way it was described in this film by one of them is that they embraced both the male and female aspects of their being. It was interesting from a gender perspective. There is also a thread of anger regarding the colonization of native Hawaiians. I found it a great learning experience.

109. Bowling for Columbine (2002) 7/10
I don't know how I had never watched this but wanted to make sure I got to it this month. I definitely find some of Michael Moore's tactics annoying, reminding me a little of the attack journalism method but it certainly is entertaining. And though I don't think he got an answer to his question of why (still and in even higher numbers it seems) Americans kill each other with guns, I appreciate that he at least asked the question.

110. East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story (2020) 8/10
I saw a good review from one of you who watched this a week or so ago and it piqued my interest so thank you for that (though I can't remember who it was). I thought it was really well done as a documentary and an important film for understanding another facet of the black/white wealth gap. I hadn't known (or hadn't remembered) that housing projects started during the New Deal era for working class families. I learned a lot about project housing that I hadn't known before.

111. S21: The Khmer Rouge Death Machine (2003) 6/10
As a documentary it was slow and probably could have been edited better for pace. However, as a subject it's incredibly important to understand, and just to be aware that this happened. I have been ignorant of how many attempted genocides have taken place in our world. Before this month, I knew about the Nazis (obviously the worst), Rwanda, Bosnia, and Myanmar. But now I'm wondering, how many times has this mass killing thing happened? Just as a starting point, I thought I'd just look up genocide on Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genocides_in_history. Really wish I had just gone to bed instead because I may never sleep again.

112. Phantom Cowboys (2018) 6/10
Cinema verite meets ethnography? The filmmaker follows three teenage boys as they are becoming adults (filming for nine years) and documents what happens in their lives. Not my favorite type of documentary but I will say it was the most interesting of this style that I've watched so far.

113-119. The Confession Tapes (Seasons 1 & 2 - 11 Episodes) (550 min total, use 60 of previous remainder, 49 min. remaining)
This series is terrifying. Some of the people they profiled, I had doubts if they were really innocent but a shockingly high number had evidence surface to prove their innocence but by then it was too late because they'd already confessed. And why can't any juror seem to believe that after being strong-armed and pressured by the police without sleep, for hours on end, a person might confess to a crime just to end that torture? It seems plausible to me. I don't know what I'd do in those conditions. And, obviously I can't say this is true of most police officers, but in these cases at least, it certainly didn't seem that the detectives cared about the truth, they just wanted a conviction and it makes you wonder how often that is the case.
