110. Chung Kuo - Cina (1972)
Antonioni does a China travelogue here. It's not bad but I wouldn't call it essential viewing either. Due to the nature of the documentary format, what we don't get are many of Antonioni's breathtaking widescreen visuals. Still, he does make good use of copious panning and tracking shots. While there is some narration, this is more of a dive into the culture than a super-informative doc.

111. Messi (2014)
Alex de la Iglesia angles his unique talents in service of making a documentary on celebrated Argentine soccer player Lionel Messi, and the results are very much a reflection of Iglesia's filmmaking techniques. While obviously you don't have the trademark dark, twisted comedy/horror of many of his films, the format of the doc has groups of friends, family and colleagues of Messi sitting at tables and enthusiastically painting a picture of his life and accomplishments mixed with archival home movies, footage from various broadcasts of games and early well-filmed dramatizations of Messi as a kid. The discussion sections are very boisterous and rapid fire with an energy that reflects many of Iglesia's dialogue-heavy films. While I'm not much of a fan of soccer at all, I still found this to be a pretty engaging doc.

112a. Trance and Dance in Bali (1952)
112b. Appalachian Spring (1944)
112c. Heretic (1931)
112d. Beauty Knows No Pain (1972)
Here we have a block of dance-themed shorts. Trance and Dance in Bali basically walks through a traditional Bali dance ritual while Appalachian Spring and Heretic are early stagings of Martha Graham ballet performances. Beauty Knows No Pain is a doc on the first large scale majorette team and the pursuit of success despite the pain and discomfort of the tryouts. They were all fine but none are essential.

Image
113. Freedom Riders (2010)
This was a very good PBS-produced doc on the freedom riders of the '60s that staged bus sit-ins as part of the Civil Rights movement as well as the danger and adversity they faced while attempting it. It's a comprehensive view of the subject and well worth a watch for anyone interested in the subject.

114a. Cities of the Underworld: New York (2007)
114b. La Paella di Dan Albert (2014)
So I picked up the DVD of Cities of the Underworld: New York thinking it would be a doc on organized crime. Much to my chagrin, it is instead a profile of New York's subway system, aqueducts and other subterranean architectural constructs... Suffice it to say, I wasn't much of a fan. Dan Albert's Paella is a sort of doc on the heritage of Spanish immigrants of the early 20th century shot through the lens of a paella recipe that has been handed down from Dan Albert's family for generations. The concept is interesting but in execution, it mostly plays out like a cooking video.

Image
115. Memory: The Origins of Alien (2019)
This was actually a very good, well-produced doc on the original Alien film that goes deeper than the average behind-the-scenes studio-produced doc. We have discussions with experts, philosophers, historians, fans and production crew and cast to paint a full picture of the significance and impact the film has had and the little details that went into making it.

Image
116. Tiny Giants 3D (2014)
Absolutely beautifully shot but pretty shallow doc that follows small mammals such as chipmunks and mice as they survive in the wild. It's definitely mostly intended as eye candy and on that count it definitely delivers. My kids actually really enjoyed it.

Yea, honestly if it had focused on the quirky weirdos that populate the NYC subway (like somebody leaving a damn dead shark on the floor... ), I think it would've been a lot more interesting. Instead our overenthusiastic host leads us through various underground tunnels talking excitedly about when they were built and marveling at how cool everything is. A particular highlight was showing off the drainage system under the Empire State Building.

Believing that a mysterious shard of metal in his leg is an alien microchip, an American is interviewed, along with the surgeon hired to remove it and a chemical scientist in this UFO conspiracy documentary. The surgeon always seems rational, discussing non-UFO possibilities, but he passed away during production, which results in the second half of the film going totally off the deep end, with everyone interviewed insisting that the metal must be alien.

15. In the Year of the Pig (1968)
★ ★ ★
I’m no scholar on the timeline of the Vietnam War, but it seems like this came along right at the point where President Johnson’s escalation was turning to opposition and questioning what we were doing in Vietnam. The film goes back to the beginning of U.S. involvement and gives a history book of names and important events, coming as close as I’ve gotten to understanding some of the complexities of the situation. There are the political leaders presenting their spin, followed by footage of American soldiers, high on John Wayne levels of nationalism, contradicting the politicians. There’s a clear anti-war bias at work here, but it’s hard to argue with the footage of American soldiers acting superior and racist

Thank you Martin. I thought I was losing my mind. Somebody commits a Capital Crime and the Doc tries to shift the blame to somebody else for being a bad influence. I thought maybe this was a sign of the uncertainities of internet relationships 10 years ago. They even make a point to say that at no time does the Not Guilty person suggest such a crime should happen. Aside from that, this is an interesting story, but not a well made documentary.

Actors and actresses auditioning for reenactment footage roles are interviewed in this unique documentary about the murder of a six-year-old girl. The complexities of the case make the interviews very dynamic, and with the murder still unsolved, it is interesting how we are slowly fed more information while wilder and wilder conspiracy theories emerge. If arguably insensitive and disrespectful, watched as a layman, this was a riveting stylistic choice.

12. The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution (Nelson, 2015). A 2-hour brief history of the Black Panther Party with lots of the people involved interviewed. I don't know too much about the Black Panthers, so I feel like this was a good introduction to them.

13. Los Angeles Plays Itself (Andersen, 2003). I was intimidated by the runtime of this one (almost 3 hours), but the hours just flew by. This was very engrossing and well worth your time.

84. In Search of Greatness (2018) 7/10
A sports doc about what makes for "greatness" - I liked it, largely because I liked the people interviewed in it, but also because they talk quite a bit about child development, hard work, and knowledge acquisition, which are super important, while de-emphasizing the physical tools.

85. Particle Fever (2013) 7/10
Rewatch. All about the discovery of the Higgs boson - it takes you through process of discovery and makes you feel like you're part of the team. A ton of fun if you like particle physics at all.

86. Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret (2014) 4/10
I kinda hated this, even though I generally agree with it. Like even if they're right, the methods they use to tell their story are so off-putting it's almost unwatchable. Picture every anti-vax documentary, except apply those methods to the meat industry.

87. Red Hollywood (1996) 4/10
This is a clip show that goes through the Hollywood 10 who were blacklisted for communism, and the messages in their films. I recognized a few of the films, but not many, so it missed on that front. I'm not well versed enough in communist politics to get the subtle portrayals in these clips. It just fell flat and boring for me.

117-118a. Nintendo Quest: Power Tour (2015) E1-9
This was a fun follow up to the Nintendo Quest documentary that involves the star and filmmaker of the doc going on a road trip across the US and Canada to the premiere showings of Nintendo Quest in several major cities, along the way looking for games on their Must Have list. If you've seen Nintendo Quest and liked it, you'll probably be down for this similar mini-series.

Image
118b. They Call It Pro Football (1966)
The doc that birthed ESPN apparently...

Image
119. George Harrison: Living in the Material World (2011)
Scorsese directs a comprehensive doc about George Harrison that features interviews with Paul and Ringo naturally as well as many others. Honestly my biggest complaint with this one is it's close to four-hour length. This isn't the first time I've thought Scorsese has had problems with editing down his babies, and it probably won't be the last.

Image
120. Gray Matter (2004)
Joe Berlinger, director of Paradise Lost, goes in search of Dr. Heinrich Gross, a doctor who worked for the Nazis and purportedly participated in awful, fucked up experiments and murder of over 700 children whose brains kept in jars are finally being laid to rest. As you can imagine, this one is a ray of sunshine... For real though, the subject is an important one to cover although Berlinger's Michael Moore-esque hunt for Dr. Gross feels unnecessary.

Image
121. The Inland Sea (1991)
This is essentially a travelogue of island communities off the coast of Japan based on writings of Donald Ritchie. Yet, it has a certain engaging quality unlike many more static travelogues, filmed with a certain poetic fluidity and populated with interesting side-trips. I can actually see why Criterion would deem this one worth releasing.

Image
122. Patrick Stewart Narrates 'The Planets' (1993)
The title sums this one up pretty well. Captain Picard himself takes us on a hypnotic aural and visual journey through the solar system using a combination of photography and footage from space probes and CGI animation. It's not super informative and in fact feels like it's almost more intended as an art piece. Unfortunately the CG comes across very dated nowadays and while Stewart's narration is top notch, there are probably better docs on space you can watch instead.

Image
123. For Sama (2019)
This was a harrowing and incredibly gripping doc following firsthand experiences of the bombing of Aleppo during the Syrian Civil War structured as a letter to the filmmaker's daughter Sama who lived through the intense experience as a baby along with her parents. It actually reminded me of The Square about the Egyptian riots from a few years ago in terms of its structure and immediacy. Definitely recommended.

Image
124. Tales of the Rat Fink (2006)
Despite me having little interest in cars, I actually had a whole lot of fun with this one. It uses a mix of voiceover narration by John Goodman, archival images, footage from films of the era, animation, comic strip stop motion and all manner of transitional effects to tell the story of Ed "Big Daddy" Roth, creator of the Rat Fink character and prominent figure in the Kustom Kulture movement of the '50s and '60s. While the doc is a little light on actual content on Roth's personal life, it's so fun to watch that it's easily forgiven.

89. Miss Representation (2011) 7/10
I can't say this is overwhelmingly happy or anything, but it was really exciting to watch. All about the representation of women in media, it did a nice job of putting words to a lot of unflattering and harmful trends in media. Definitely a tad over the top, but has a good message to help nudge people in the right direction.

This... was something. The first half was a relatively boring recitation of serial killer crimes (Yorkshire Ripper), but the back half was a fascinating look into sexism in the crime-solving industry and how it lead to some legitimately awful outcomes for a number of women.

About female sexuality and the ways it gets suppressed in cultures around the world. One-sided but lots of good info that I mostly tend to agree.

84. Red Hollywood (1996) 6/10
Didn't recognize most of the films but there was some decent info about the time period, especially post-war America so I found that part the most interesting. Still probably wouldn't recommend.

85-87. Who Killed Malcolm X? (Episodes 1-6) (270 min total, 30 remaining added to previous remainder, 61 min. remaining)
I don't really know all that much about Malcolm X or the Nation of Islam so this was informative but I also found the documentarian frustrating and since I still haven't figured out how to hide spoilers I won't say why.

88-93. The 1990s: The Deadliest Decade (Episodes 1-10) (420 min total, use 60 of previous remainder)
I really liked this show for two reasons: the episodes match my attention span at a short 42 minutes each and they only seem to cover news stories where it's pretty clear who the culprit was so I'm not left wondering whodunit like I am with so many true crime documentaries.

94. The Look of Silence (2014) 9/10
Far superior to the first film he did about what is basically the Indonesian Holocaust. This time he documented it in a more nuanced way instead of focusing only on the killers' stories. The Pro-democracy/anti-communist propaganda is gross to watch and the fact that it was continuing in 2014 or thereabouts is disgusting. But, what was so sad to witness was that there is no truth or reconciliation in this community because no one is willing to admit the truth. Without truth, there seems to be very little hope for healing for this country and its people. Which is certainly not limited to Indonesia. How many countries haven't yet gotten the message that killing or incarcerating whole groups of people profoundly damages the social fabric of a nation, and destroys those who oppress in equal measure to those who are oppressed? Certainly not mine.

95. Miss Representation (2011) 8/10
All about how women are represented in media and how those images may affect us. It felt very personally true for me, but also having discussed this with many friends and read a lot on this topic, I give it a thumbs up. Not perfect, but well done.

96-98. The Food that Built America (Episodes 1-3) (255 min total, remainder of 15 min.)
I wasn't sure if I was going to like this going in, but it started playing on Hulu after the 1990s Deadliest Decade show ended and I kept watching and found that it was interesting. It's a little weird because they hired actors to act out parts of it, so it felt partially narrative and not just fully documentary. I have no idea how accurate those parts of it are but they had lots of historians and experts who they interviewed, and a narrator which is where most of the information came from.

7b. Once Upon a Time in Iraq [Episode 4: Saddam] (Bluemel, 2020)
8a. Once Upon a Time in Iraq [Episode 5: Legacy] (Bluemel, 2020)
This documentary was shown over the summer in the UK, and I'm amazed that I'm the first check on this. It's a fairly typical series of eyewitness interviews intercut with footage, but the fascinating interviewees and the horrifying stories they have to tell are astonishingly involving and powerful.
8/10

8b. Can Sex Offenders Change? (Harrison, 2020)
Interviews with sex offenders and the people treating/managing them. A lot of the offenders seem to be saying what they think people want to hear. She was abused by her father herself, and her search for answers in the face of her own anxiety about her father being released is the most interesting part.
5/10

Image

9. In the Realms of the Unreal (Yu, 2004)
A nice telling of the intriguingly strange secret life of Henry Darger, the janitor who secretly created a massive fantasy world. It becomes very moving at the end.
7/10

Image

10. Helvetica (Hustwit, 2007)
This documentary makes a subject that seems intrinsically dry into a compelling documentary with a selection of good interviews that communicate their subjects' passion both for and against the Helvetica typeface

73. Domestic Violence (2001)
74. Domestic Violence 2 (2002) <--- Both of these documentaries are good but very sad and heartbreaking. We want "out of site, out of mind" when it comes to stuff like this, but people need to know it happens often.
75. East Lake Meadows: A Public Housing Story (2020) <--- Loved this one. Great detail and story telling. Really goes to show how systematic racism is used to hold a group of people down.
76. Human (2015) <--- it was a pretty movie, but I dont think the plot was great. There are other similar documentaries that are better.
77. Agents of Chaos <--- I was not impressed. I heard so many good things, but I didn't think this movie was great. Maybe at this point im just jaded about this whole subject.

This is one of those times that going by minutes would be cool, but I'm not too concerned. I enjoyed many of the documentaries I watched.

6. Hearts and Minds (1974)
An agitprop documentary of the highest order. Interviews with famous names like Clark Clifford, Walt Rostow, Westmoreland, and Ellsberg are balanced with interviews with lesser-known activists, veterans, POWs, and Vietnamese civilians.

7. National Gallery (2014)
The sixth Wiseman movie I've seen and the first that bored me. Perhaps it's because I took so many art history classes in college. There was very little here that was interesting or offered a deeper understanding of this museum's social function.

8. Ashes and Snow (2005)
The kindest thing I can say about this movie is that it wasn't for me.

9. Antarctica: A Year on Ice (2013)
The movie delivers what it promises -- a yearlong exploration of life at McMurdo Station, Antarctica's bustling metropolis. It's defined mostly by the extensive use of time-lapse photography, which yields some utterly gorgeous images, and by interviews with residents. All of the interviewees are support staff rather than scientists. The filmmaker himself is only in Antarctica as a radio technician -- his cinematic efforts are a hobby. Highly enjoyable for those interested in Antarctica.

4. Stop Making Sense (1984)

I had only heard a few hit songs by Talking Heads before, and those turned out to be the only songs I liked here. Also, the movie is not much to look at, mostly just a lot of goofy choreography.

The case here is intriguing at first as all sorts of theories emerge as to why the accused farmer might have murdered his ailing brother. As the film progresses though, it becomes very clear that the farmer is probably not guilty with the only evidence against him being a confession signed under duress. Questions then arise of why the police are so keen on pursuing it - which the filmmakers never answer. Interesting stuff, but this left me a little wanting.

125e. The Atom Strikes! (1945)
Well, decided to take in a block of destruction-themed shorts... Overall, these succeeded in thoroughly bumming me out. Although The Atom Strikes is hilariously blatant propaganda that pretends like nuclear fallout doesn't exist. Also, my kids absolutely loved the Tacoma Bridge footage and watched it multiple times.

127. Samira cheghoneh 'Takhté siah' rol sakht a.k.a. How Samira Made the Blackboards (2000)
This was a pretty interesting doc on Samira Makhmalbaf, daughter of noted Iranian director Mohsen Makhmalbaf, and an accomplished filmmaker in her own right. While it has a focus on following her as she directs her second film The Blackboards, it also features behind-the-scenes segments on her first film The Apple as well as it's big premiere at Cannes. One of the most intriguing things about this is just showing how a 19-year-old woman has to interact with her actors in the making of the film. It looks to be a very frustrating experience, particularly given Iran's attitude toward women in general.

Image
128. On the Bowery (1956)
This was a kind of hybrid of documentary and fiction. Using a framing fictional story of a man named Ray who's barely scraping by and whittles away his money on booze, it profiles the denizens of the Bowery, populated by people down on their luck who just want to drown their sorrows in the bottom of a bottle. The narrative device actually seems to work pretty well to elicit conversations from people who may not necessarily feel inclined to talk otherwise and offers a pretty grim picture of this distinct place and time.

129-132. Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness (2020) E1-8
Well, now that all the hype has died down from earlier this year, my wife and I decided to go through this ridiculous story. It was indeed entertaining, populated with a whole menagerie of unlikable, sketchy people doing ludicrous things. I did feel like it could've been tightened up to three or four episodes though rather than seven (the eighth episode is a wrap-up with interviews from many of the people involved in the story).

Heavily reliant on audio from news reports, this certainly reflects the public awe and wonder at the moon landing. The filmmakers' insistence in only using archive footage mostly works against the project though. Without interviews or voiceover narration, the project has little sense of flow and the documentary does not really present any new views or insights through simply showing various bits of archive footage. Cool supersaturated colours though.

A bit of a disappointment for what was (at one stage) the frontrunner for the Oscar, but at least now I have this:

Image

But to watch in order to maintain it in case something gets thrown off the list? :whistling: (I do have a few in mind)

93. Chisholm '72: Unbought & Unbossed (2004) 7/10
This is about Shriley Chisholm, who was the first Black female representative elected to US congress, who ran for president in 1972. Amazing story, and one I had not heard about. Delved into tons of issues she faced along the way, including an interview with her shortly before she died. Fascinating stuff.

94. Athlete A (2020)
More about the crimes and how Nassar got away with abusing so many girls in US Gymnastics. Not as good as At the Heart of Gold, but still interesting. Less about the outcomes, but still a nice complement to Gold.

95. After Truth (2020)
Rewatch with wife. All about fake news and how it's destroying our society. Not at all topical or anything... :circle:

96. The Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia (2019)
Frontline doc about, well, MBS. Tons of detail on him and did a really good job at discussing him and his politics in context of the PR campaign he has waged to improve his image. Learned a ton from this.

97. Primary (1960)
All about Kennedy vs. Humphrey in the 1960 Democratic primary. I appreciated the innovation of it, as used new equipment to get close to the candidates verite style, but this didn't do much beyond that for me.

Shake!: Otis at Monterey documents an amazing performance by Otis Redding at the Monterey Pop Festival.

The Alcàsser Murders is the story of the kidnapping, rape, torture and murder of three teenage girls in València and its aftermath. Horrific television coverage of town's reaction and the funerals follow discovery of the bodies, and it keeps going downhill from there.
