It was interesting, though quite derived The strongest aspect for me was probably the soundtrack. Both songs and the synth score were great... the acting was hit or miss. e.g. the guy who played the nerdy character might have a pretty short career.

To be honest, I think you could do better if you're looking for a genre film this month. I mean, Atrapados is a little offbeat and unusual, but I found The Caller much more satisfying (answering the long-asked question of what if Frequency was a horror movie).

Also apparently - according to iCM - you haven't seen Juan of the Dead yet.

Atrapados appeals to me partly because it seems gritty/bleak/realistic and partly because of the transformation that I read one of the leads goes through over the course of the film.
If I can find Juan or The Caller for free, easily, before the end of the month I'll watch them. This has been the busiest Nov/Dec at my job that I can recall, at least over the last 5 years or so... I am def ready for a break.

Same actually... I'm down to one film a day and it will probably remain that way for the rest of the week. I know that doesn't sound all that busy, but for someone who averages 2 or 3 films a day and has only gone one day this year with no movie watches, this final week of term feels jam-packed. :ermm:

15. Sex and Black Magic (Dominican Republic, 1980)
Here we have another Italy/Caribbean co-production (did Italian directors just use movies as an excuse to take vacations back in the '70s?), this one shot on location in and featuring supporting cast and cultural touchstones of the Dominican Republic. Bookended by cannibalistic tribal rituals, most of film is a pretty dull softcore porn melodrama about a love triangle between a native girl and a husband and wife on vacation. Schlockmeister Joe D'Amato is usually pretty reliable to deliver something ridiculous even if it's awful, but sadly here it's just boring.

Now that ICMFF has ended I intend to join in for a very small selection of (probably only Cuban) films, starting with:

1.

El Otro Francisco / The Other Francisco (1974, Sergio Giral)

Image

This was a really exciting way to start, as The Other Francisco is not just an adaptation of a famous "anti-slavery" book from the colonial era, it is a dissection of its realism, the true nature of slavery, the intentions of the author and the society/culture he was writing within and for.

In this aim we are shown both the story he wrote - starting with its ending - his presentation of it - and then a more linear adaptation - that at pivotal moments reflects or presents an alternative - or even cuts back to the author himself and what words he used to describe his creation and inspiration - as well as real events of the time, and after.

This makes it an essay film above all else, and one of the films within the genre closest to fiction. I have a particular affinity for this style, as it encourages introspection and thought throughout - and creates a critical glance at the presentation of one slave, Francisco - with a simultaneous though of "the other Francisco", that is, a Francisco that could really have existed - along with a dissection of the bourgeois middle classes with an aim to simply be "nicer" to their slaves.

Unfortunately, the current print is in dire need of restoration, but it is still clearly a raw and well-made film: it is just harder to give it full marks on aesthetics - however - with the intelligent and challenging deconstruction the visceral function is still well served - that is you are already reflecting on what you are shown - the images in themselves are not the most important - and they are still effective and often: brutal.

A romantic drama from Cuba. Addressing racial divides and slave treatment, this is a film that no doubt has its heart in the right place, but it is hardly the most riveting watch. With loud musical cues, exaggerated performances and a dialogue-heavy script, the whole thing feels extremely melodramatic. Things improve in the final 45 minutes though as the slave situation begins to take focus with some excellent close-up shots that slowly pan over dead bodies.

Bits and pieces here are interesting, from the protagonist's blind mother to her cousin's idealism, and much of the shadow-heavy interior lighting is exquisite, reflecting the lovers' paranoia regarding whether or not they are being watched. As a narrative though, the film is far too melodramatic for its own good and the dialogue often feels unnatural as the lovers constantly discuss politics. The whole film though is heavily slanted to dialogue over mood.

16. Il Corpo a.k.a. The Body (Trinidad & Tobago, 1974)
Yet another Italian/Caribbean co-production, this one in Trinidad (how many of these were there?), The Body is probably closest in plot to steamy noir thrillers like The Postman Always Rings Twice. It concerns an older guy who hires a younger guy to come work for and live with him on the island. When the young guy arrives, he finds the older gentleman has shacked up with a mistress, a sultry enticing young native of the island (the older guy's wife, played by Carroll Baker in a pretty thankless role, is a prostitute at the local bar in town). Naturally the young guy strikes up an affair with the mistress while the older guy is away and she reveals to him that the older guy abuses her and she wants him dead. You can imagine the sorts of places this goes. It isn't amazing, filmed in a very flat tone, but also is a decent little potboiler with a hilariously stupid ending that was nowhere near as boring as Sex & Black Magic, which had a similar love triangle plot.

This gets off to a great start with an intense initial casing and hold-up operation that the protagonists execute as resourceful kids, but the childhood section is over too quickly (lasting less than 10 minutes) before the film flashes forward to their adult years in which their criminal activities are more mundane. Some of the more violent scenes having staying power though and the ending is pretty cold in the best sort of way. Great music too.

17. La muerte de un burócrata a.k.a. Death of a Bureaucrat (Cuba, 1966)
At the beginning of the movie, Luis Bunuel, Laurel & Hardy, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd are among the names thanked by the director and those references are definitely worn on this film's sleeve. The story involves a nephew attempting to reclaim his recently deceased uncle's union card that was accidentally buried with him so the widow can claim his pension. What follows is a madcap, funny and at times incredibly frustrating satirical descent into red tape hell replete with surreal dream sequences and wacky sight gags that escalates into a climax that is both totally appropriate and satisfying on one level while also being a total bummer on another level. I really enjoyed this one.

Shot entirely on the rooftop of an apartment building in Havana, this drama follows the discussions of various youths, all of whom are uncertain of what the future has in store for them. The setting is pretty unique and the film has a fair bit of interest with the characters staring down at the city below them while ruminating. Such uniqueness alone though is not quite enough to sustain a feature film, and this is never as quirky or zany as it could have been.

1. Rue Cases Nègres (Euzhan Palcy, 1983) 7/10 Martinique
<-- pleasantly surprised by this coming-of-age drama which is not my cup of tea usually but there were brilliant insights about the village life in colonial Martinique and a relevant approach about the cycle of poverty and how it's nearly impossible to break it

This noirish thriller boasts some great Caribbean scenery and there are several very intense moments as the employer seems on the verge of discovering the plot against him. For the most part though, this is a poorly paced affair. It is almost halfway in before the murder plot is suggested and even once suggested, it comes with little sense of urgency/necessity. Yes, the ending is memorably stupid/over-the-top, but I don't think I liked this as much as flavo.

Shunned as a lunatic by his fellow villagers, a Jamaican man happily passes the time talking to trees and bushes; an overweight German tourist changes his life though by teaching him the pleasures of the flesh in this wacky comedy. Paul Campbell is solid in the lead role and his conversations with plants and trees (in which we hear them talk back) are great; the German tourist angle less so - in particular given that she pretty much rapes then manipulates him.

Oh, I wouldn't say I really liked it or anything. Just in comparison to Sex & Black Magic it wasn't AS boring. The whole first half of the movie is pretty dull.

This story of romance and wedded bliss that twists into a tale of domestic violence is bad. Really bad. Like 'Nigerian soap opera' bad, which is what it actually reminds me of the most. The whole thing looks very amateurish and the script is super heavy-handed and obvious.

18. The Skin (Antigua and Barbuda, 2011)
Well, this one had potential. The story is about a guy and his wife who are in financial trouble who then finds a vase to sell, not realizing it's cursed. When the wife develops a strange rash on her stomach, they seek help in an old magic man who performs a ritual to dispel the curse. The lead actors are actually a step above some of the other films I've seen in the region and the script actually seems to exist which is also a good thing. You don't see that random, improvised dialogue much at all in here. Also it makes good use of Antigua locations, and you do you get a good sense of island life. Now for the bad. The directing and editing is absolutely abysmal here. Random jump cuts, out-of-sync dialogue, uninspired blocking... The movie also takes far too long to get to the horror elements. It spends a good half the movie on the couple's financial woes. It also doesn't really seem to know how to end and just peters out. Oh well.

Oops. Need to stop skimming over reviews of films that I haven't seen. :pinch: By the way, you're on 19 points, not 18.

Against his parents' wishes, a ghetto teen secretly trains to become a champion boxer in this coming-of-age drama from Jamaica. In the lead role, first time actor Kevoy Burton is excellent, however, he is the only thing that really works in the film's favour. There is a curious political backdrop, but all of this gets lost in the rising-star central plot. The film is also much more about the cliché of his father coming to accept him than it ever is about the politics.

Merry Christmas all. Just came back now, and had the time to finish off these 4 mini-reviews I have been meaning to do forever.

*All are Cuban
*2-5

Decided to dive deeper into Alea by discovering his first 3 features, loved none (except the first story in his debut) but all had something to offer:

Historias de la revolución / Stories of the Revolution (1960, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea)

An anthology of 3 stories from the days of the revolution - starting with a low.key but hard hitting story of a wounded revolutionary - and a man who wants nothing to do with it. I was thoroughly impressed/surprised by the degree of not only sympathy but empathy the film had for the lead - as he does everything he can for his own self-preservation - with a particularly strong finish. The second two stories are more specifically revolutionary. The second is simple and pleasant (though with slightly too clean guerilla fighters in the jungle) and is a simple story of honor and comraderie - the second, even more directly in the battle - feels the emptiest - and without the strong moments for the first two segments. 7/10.

Las doce sillas / The Twelve Chairs (1962, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea)

This film is perhaps most notable for recontextualizing The Twelve Chairs incredibly well, and tying to the topical issue of the bourgeoisie hiding away their money and jewellery - and the way the once privileged middle and upper class long to get their power and position back - or simply escape to Miami.

It is actually surprising what the film gets away with - including the insult that an ex-middle class man will have to die in Cuba - and at least creating an air of sympathy for our scheming tough adorably incompetent treasure hunters. It really has a lot of fun on the middle classes expense - including not being afraid to go dark as it shows how the upper classes left for the US one after one - as the remaining middle class live in delusions of what was. This is really where it is at its most scathing.

However, in terms of characters, humour, etc. it really does not add or do that much - opening animated sequence aside - and in the end it is merely a good film. 6/10.

Cumbite (1964, Tomás Gutiérrez Alea)

Surprisingly, Cumbite moves its action to Haiti and looks in on a low-key Romea and Juliet sceneria with feuding families in the midst off empty waterless farmland. It has a strong message of what poverty can do, though its almost saintly lead and overly forgiving view does render it somewhat tamer than it otherwise could have been. 6/10.

---------------------------------
---------------------------------

Hotel Nueva Isla (2014, Irene Gutiérrez Torres, Javier Labrador Deulofeu)

Image

If you want to be engrossed in a contemplative and beautifully cinematic documentary that could honestly have been a drama by Costa or Tsai, do give Hotel Nueva Isla a viewing. This is a film that really showcases just how much you can communicate about a life with minimal dialogue, and no interviews. We follow an elderly man as he searches for treasure and contemplates renovating/selling a completely broken down hotel: of which he is the last resident.

Along with his sole regular companion, a dog, he walks the corridor and rips off/digs into walls and any other potential hiding spots - often with beautiful views from or of the ruins. Clocking in at a mere 70 minutes you are drawn into his life and quest - and the few conversations he has with visitors give a great outline of his personality, life, flaws and hopes. It also draws a picture of poverty in the ruins of luxury, and lets you feel the hotel - as well as our leads quest. Absolutely beautiful! 8.5/10.
