Titled after the Spanish word for "lovesickness", this dark comedy from Puerto Rico intertwines four tales of characters plagued by love and relationship issues. The most offbeat and fascinating of these involves a man who holds a bus hostage, refusing to let anyone go until the female driver agrees to marry him. There is also bickering couple who take to jumping out of moving cars Lady Bird style when their disagreements get too heated. Great final scene.

20. Countryman (Jamaica, 1982)
It seems like with many Jamaican films, even if they're lackluster, I can count on the soundtrack being good. Not to say Countryman is completely without merit otherwise. It does have an interesting almost mystical flow to it at times, but it also feels padded and a little aimless in the way it's directed as well, lacking a certain sense of immediacy needed for some of the sequences intended to drum up thrills.

21. Hammerhead a.k.a. Sharkman (Aruba, 2005)
Co-produced and filmed on location in Aruba, this Sc-Fi Channel original is mostly hot garbage. Bad effects. Terrible characters. Feels way too long even though it's only 90 minutes. Although the most egregious offence is wasting Jeffrey Combs who here plays a mad doctor (I know... a stretch, right?) who creates a half human/half shark out of his son in an attempt to save his life. Despite the crappiness of the movie, Combs is still solid. He can play these kinds of roles in his sleep, but it doesn't mean he isn't entertaining to watch anyway.

This is one of those movies -- it's often referred to as hyperlink cinema. It's an OK movie, though I didn't find any of the characters as interesting as the filmmakers evidently did.

I originally saw this many years ago, and remembered the crime plot and the documentary style portrait of Jamaica, but was struck this time by how effectively it conveyed the urban poverty of Kingston, which I assume was accurate.

I was planning on watching more for this challenge, but am still waiting for a Cuban film that I requested from the library, so I guess I'll be watching a couple Cuban films in early January.
