Despite some lengthy character introductions, I found this Longest Yard type film messy and hard to follow as it is torn between depicting football matches in great detail and showing how the (highly interchangeable) prisoners interact with one another. Some split screen editing is nifty and there is an intense bit where one prisoner punishes another in public, but for a film whose overall message is 'prisons are corrupt', this offers little beyond that.

The three Nicolás Pereda films were really interesting. Thanks for suggesting I watch more than one of his films, Max. They all deal with the same actors playing similar roles and dealing with the same themes. Each film resonated off each other quite well.

A lot of people were impressed with the narrative device used in Greatest Hits. While I appreciate his creativity and it is an interesting concept, it did not work for me in the film. Interestingly, while I was reading some analysis on the films I saw a quote by the director saying he feels his films should be watched together within a short time frame. Luckily that is exactly what I did.

And another good Ripstein. Bit on the low budget side, but unsettling. Kind of a mix between a neo-noir and something from Pedro Costa

Glad you enjoyed the Peredas.

Cutting very suddenly between his childhood and adult years, this western does not give much sense of the protagonist's transformation, but his brutality as a trained killer is certainly unnerving and with lots of blood and gore, the film assembles some indelible images. The overall visual style of the film is a bit of a mixed blessing though with lots of shaky camerawork and unusual, unsteady zooms that feel gritty but which are also distracting.

This benefits from a decent premise and there are some creepy moments thanks to the smallest of details like taunting sound effects in the game. There is also some decent gore. The film does not play up its best hand though. The most striking element is the ironic ways in which their wishes are granted (fame wish results infamy) a la Wishmaster, but far more time is dedicated though to them discussing what to do and having petty arguments.

With dashes of Videodrome, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Eyes of Laura Mars, this has several striking elements, but by borrowing from such varied sources, the whole thing feels convoluted without its own mythology. The pacing is off too with much focus spent on high school hijinks and crushes, even with the horror begins. The film is at least unique by having its near adult lead character dressed in dinosaur pajamas more than half the time.

My line of thinking, in addition to IMDB listing it as a Mexico co-production, is that it is filmed in Mexico, set in Mexico, about a third of the film is in Spanish and deals with the relationship between US and Mexico politically as well as the Mexican drug cartels, both of which are major themes associated with Mexico right now. It honestly felt more appropriate to this challenge than some others I've watched this month like Chosen Survivors which just seemed to be produced and directed by Mexicans but otherwise didn't feel Mexican at all. I can remove it if you still feel it isn't appropriate.

I didn't realise that Redrum was a Mexican production company (if I recall correctly, the top results I got were Spectre and Blade Runner 2049 when I clicked the link) and that's a salient point about it feeling more Mexican than some of the other stuff that is eligible this month. I don't know if Don't Panic is on your radar -- and don't panic if it isn't; it isn't much good -- but that one felt a lot like it was pretending to be set in America, much the same way that a lot of stuff shot in British Columbia is made to look American.

Your big data drops give me a headache. The second Amityville film does have a Mexican production company attached. It's a borderline case though, and I probably wouldn't include it myself, but I don't think I can logically exclude it either. Oh, and I liked this a lot better than the first.

I haven't looked up the titles you've logged that I am unfamiliar with, but of those that I know of, Radioactive Dreams is actually the one that had me raise my eyebrows more than the Amityville sequel. I can't find much about the production companies though, and the film does have Mexican producers attached. I guess I'll permit it, though I also need to work out whether I feel comfortable logging the film myself since I actually had it lined up for the 80s Challenge next month. Maybe I will watch this month instead...

Very accomplished first film and for what it lacks in polish, it makes up for in creativity with lots of abnormally low camera angles and gently sped up footage. The film takes a while to get going, and the twenty minutes before the mistake identity mix-up first occurs are uneven, but once the mix-up happens, the film becomes a nonstop ride - and some of the best scenes are actually not action-based; there is a bathtub scene rife with tension.

A thriller from Carlos Enrique Taboada. Best known for his horror movies, this actually sits fine next to the rest of Taboada's output with the characters experiencing real life horrors of their own after taking an advantage of a real life horror (looting a plane crash). The second half of the film is not quite as effective as the first half with large bouts of time dedicated to routine police procedural scenes, but it all ends on powerful bird's-eye shot.

In the wreckage of a car crash, a detective lucks upon a video camera containing a torture and murder filmed by the car's passengers. The majority of the film plays out through found footage as this and other recordings of the criminals' exploits are discovered, and their exploits are frequently revolting. It's torture porn with few, if any, redeeming features. Some of the gore was quite convincing, I suppose, but then a lot wasn't.
