2. Canoa (Felipe Cazals, 1976) 7.5/10 ... nice when Criterion draws attention to hidden gems, a pleasant surprise that they have this one when there isn't much from Mexico in their catalogue

March Challenge: None
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

05. El espejo de la bruja, by Chano Urueta (1962) 6/10

A sort of mix of Les yeux sans visages, the hands of Orlac, Frankenstein and probably a few more... Not many surprises, not really well directed, but the movie is short, quick-paced, and entertaining.

Based on the Jonestown massacre but with character names changed, this Mexican feature attempts to recount the events leading up to the tragedy. It is a curious slice of history, but the treatment is uneven; there is no gradual descent into madness as the Reverend is delusional from the get-go. We also never get to the heart of what attracted his followers. What the film gets right though is the mass suicide. It is a devastating and haunting scene.

22. Even the Wind is Afraid (1968)

Image

As per the title, constantly blowing wind plays a large factor in mood and atmosphere, and with some spooky interiors, this mounts several eerie moments. There is also much mysteriousness regarding the headmistress declaring a tower off-limits and punishing the girls for trying to investigate it. The supernatural element ends up being a pretty standard horror cliché though and the film does not really explore its oppressive school environment.

Sneaking out of a costume party, a socialite discovers a woman passed out in the backseat of her car and a vagrant inside her home in this thriller. The film benefits from an intriguing set-up as she assumes the worst of the man and treats the woman like an old friend despite both being strangers. The film arrives at a climax that feels rather conventional but the film is quite encapsulating with the pounding rain outside only further escalating tension.

This Mexican feature was Boris Karloff's final film. The plot is convoluted and messy and does not makes a whole lot of sense, but Karloff actually does a pretty good job playing possessed (an alien has taken over his body and has to wrestle with Karloff's mind trying to break free of the possession). It is a shame that this dueling of personalities within is not given greater focus. Some of the sets are decent, but it is Karloff who makes this watchable.

Nice screenshot choice

3. Midaq Alley (1995)
Solid drama about a small urban community in Mexico. I loved the way the story was told from three different perspectives, so you got to see different angles and additional information. Definitely sad, but a worthwhile film. Very nice!

8. Actas de Marusia (1975)
Based on a real massacre that happened in 1925 (though the action is curiously transposed to 1907 in the movie), Actas de Marusia depicts a strike in a small mining town in northern Chile that swiftly escalates to open rebellion. It may remind many of La Patagonia Rebelde, a nearly contemporaneous movie, made during a period of rising right-wing power in South America, about an interwar-era labor strike in a Southern Cone country that led to revolt.

Actas de Marusia suffers from a lack of focus on characters. Only Gian Maria Volonte's revolutionary is developed in any depth, and not much at that. The best labor conflict movies (I think of Matewan, The Molly Maguires, Salt of the Earth) focus on characters and the emotional, familial, economic, and political forces they struggle with. Actas de Marusia opts instead to focus on plot and action. And I have to admit that it's rousing stuff, but it could have been a lot better. What really stands out is director Miguel Littin's talent for orchestrating vast tableaux or soldiers, strikers, workers, and firing squads (never seen a movie with more firing squads) amid the hardscrabble altiplano landscape. The careful arrangement of crowd scenes amid an unforgiving environment evokes the difficulty of life in the high desert country. The miners/strikers become emblems of the land -- tough, steely, bold. Their eventual repression at the hands of the army is as pitiless as it is brutal.

I thought that I had seen that screenshot before somewhere - presumably in poll results at some point - but maybe it was you who ingrained that image in my subconscious for so long. Yes, it's a great image. Good film too, if not the best film that CET directed that year; Drifter in the Rain rocks.

For a film with a title like that, this horror movie is a surprisingly slow-burn affair, only really reaching pandemonium levels in its final quarter hour. While the restraint is curious, it causes the film to drag at times. There is definitely some decent gore in the mix though, the seduction scenes are well handled and the jump cut special effects work surprisingly well to convey oddities, like a snake in her cup, which she can see but nobody else.

Her second special is even better than the first. Quite funny and enjoyable. Not really breaking new ground, per se, but fun to see how some of the universal tropes of comedy (e.g., sex, relationships, making fun of stupid people) extend to Mexico. Also fun to see how humor works in a predominantly Catholic country.

I didn't find this a very easy film to get into. It is halfway in before we discover what caused the central youth to flee from Mexico to America and the movie has a bit of a back-and-forth structure going on that prevents tension building. There is also a lot of dancing, all of which is well choreographed and looks great, but which is not compelling alone. The protagonist is intriguing with his dancing love and unique haircut at least. Sweet romance too.

24 - Perpetuum Mobile (Nicolás Pereda, 2009) 7.5/10

25 - Summer of Goliath/Verano de Goliat (Nicolás Pereda, 2010) 7/10

26 - Greatest Hits/Los mejores temas (Nicolás Pereda, 2012) 6.5/10

27 - Bleak Street/La calle de la amargura (Arturo Ripstein, 2015) 7/10

The three Nicolás Pereda films were really interesting. Thanks for suggesting I watch more than one of his films, Max. They all deal with the same actors playing similar roles and dealing with the same themes. Each film resonated off each other quite well.

A lot of people were impressed with the narrative device used in Greatest Hits. While I appreciate his creativity and it is an interesting concept, it did not work for me in the film. Interestingly, while I was reading some analysis on the films I saw a quote by the director saying he feels his films should be watched together within a short time frame. Luckily that is exactly what I did.

And another good Ripstein. Bit on the low budget side, but unsettling. Kind of a mix between a neo-noir and something from Pedro Costa
