This crime drama has all the trappings of noir, but for the most part it feels like a melodrama as the protagonist bounces between various women, one of whom runs into an approaching train in an over-the-top moment of overwhelming despair. Things improve in the final half-hour as the crime themes become more prominent and there is a particularly good kidnapping stretch. The ending is also quite brutal despite its heavy-handed symbolism.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

5. Cascabel (1977) by Raúl Araiza
Interesting excersise, it's a real documentary wrapped up inside a fictional film. The fictional part is a movie about artists trying not to sell out to the political power that financed the documentary. The documentary, which is mostly talking heads, is about the different viewpoints of the Chiapas population about the Lacandon people and the land reform that affected them.

Pretending that everything is fine when her husband's finances dry up proves challenging for a posh housewife here. Juggling the high expectations of her gossiping friends and spoilt children, Ilse Salas does well in the lead role, only just managing to hide her insecurities. Her experiences are made more daunting by an absolutely taunting music score full of clapping and slapping sounds, as well as some dizzy shots that circle 360 degrees around.

6. Titixe (2018)
A short documentary about a woman that runs a "titixe" over the life of his late grandfather, who laboured a piece of land he owned and how the following generations abandoned that lifestyle. Nice photography and use of sound. Recommended.

One of the two or three best Mexican films that I have seen so far this month. It's a challenge double too.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico
1. The Book of Stone (1969)
2. Chosen Survivors (1974)
3. The Devil's Rain (1975)
4. Darker Than Night (1975)
5. Come Out and Play (2012)
6. Tigers Are Not Afraid (2017)
7. Here Comes the Devil (2012)
8. The Young One (1960)
9. Miss Bala (2011)
10. La Otra (1946)
11. The Pearl (1947)
12. The Castle of Purity (1973)
13. We Are What We Are (2010)
14. The Secret Formula (1965)
15. María Candelaria (1944)
16. The Night Falls (1952)
17. The Good Girls (2018)

18. Aunt Alejandra (1979)

Image

The first half is very dynamic here with much ambiguity as to whether or not a strange great aunt is a witch. After all, she is able to get through locked doors and has weird chanting rituals at night. This ambiguity dries up in the second half which becomes a more traditional horror ride - but the film is engaging to the end due to the very diverse ways that the family react towards her. This is kind of a film about respect for your elders. Or lack thereof.

Build that wall! Keep Americans out!
1. El Alien y yo (2016)
2. Sofía Niño de Rivera: Expuesta (2016)

I wanted to try some Mexican stand-up comedy, so I started with Sofia. She's pretty funny. The special starts with comparing accents in various regions in Mexico, which I can't hear the difference on, but I appreciated the learning of what's funny and the jokes that were being made. Lots of laughs in there, too. Only big problem is that the speech was so fast it was a little hard to keep up with the subtitles. 7/10 for me, and might be higher if I spoke Spanish.

4. La Noche Avanza (1952)
This is the jai alai noir you never knew you needed. That's right -- jai alai, the ball-and-scoop game based on Basque pelota. Is there such a thing as jai alai noir, the same way boxing noir is a subgenre? I have no clue. But there should be. In the United States at least, jai alai has an indelible reputation as a seedy sport played mostly in Florida for betting purposes, invariably corrupt and tied up with organized crime. Now that's a noirish sport. Pedro Armendariz is Marcos, our jai alai champion here, a snarling jerk who is juggling three women with neither good sense nor an even temper. It goes to show that meathead jocks exist in every sport, no matter how obscure. Inevitably, Marcos can't manage his love rectangle, leading to a slowly unfolding journey of jealousy and revenge. The movie is beautifully shot and lit. I've seen four Roberto Gavaldon movies now, and they've all been good. The man is more dependable than the outcome of a jai alai game, even when the fix is in.

5. Canoa (1976)
About a brutal attack in a small town near Puebla that happened in 1968. It was soon overshadowed by the far deadlier massacre later that year in Mexico City. A small group of workers from the local university, on a trip to climb a local mountain, were mistaken for communist students. The townspeople beat and mutilated them, killing two. The parallels to today's politics are clear and frightening enough that the movie, were it released today, would be seen as a metaphor for our current crises -- the way new media (the towns' PA - social media) curdles a social frenzy, the reactionary tendency of religious conservatives, unreasoned fears of infiltrating outsiders. It's not a metaphor, of course. It's just that social and political evils are everlasting. Shot in a documentary style that includes apparent interviews with perpetrators and witnesses before and after the event.

6. Cronos (1993)
A neat encapsulation of the sympathetic, humanist gothic/body horror which has become synonymous with Del Toro.

7. La Diosa Arrodillada (1947)
A sodden mess, the first bad movie of this challenge and the first bad movie I've seen from director Gavaldon. It's 100 minutes of Maria Felix and Arturo de Cordova staring at each other and deciding alternately a dozen times over whether to run away together or not. No tension of either the dramatic or romantic kind.

19b. Muñecas (2010) 25mins

Birders was okay, but nothing too special, looking at tourists who come to the US/Mexican border to admire all of the varied bird species that live and travel through the region. One of the tourists make the acute observation that the birds don't know borders, but this is mostly just pleasant imagery.

Muñecas on the other hand was excellent. The first half is very creepy and suggestive without the filmmakers making it explicit what exactly is going on. And when things do get explicit, it gets very dark, including some very unpredictable plot turns. The final scene and telling state is haunting.

This thriller is a blatant critique of health services and bureaucratic red tape, but remains effective thanks to urgent pacing. It is easy to feel for the protagonist's frustration as she ignored and pushed to the side when she tries to get justice normal channels, and her stress is heartfelt even if her decisions seem irrational as she resorts to violent means to get heard. The on/off narration from future court proceedings annoyed me though.
