47. 3.0* - Boss Level by Joe Carnahan (2020)

Starts off pretty well, but it seems that Carnahan has lost some of his flair. Truth be told, I'm not the biggest fan of the "day repeating" premise, so Boss Level was fighting an uphill battle from the start. But its biggest problem is that it pays way too much attention to the plot, whereas the action is by far its most interesting element. Roy wakes up every day being assaulted by a variety of hitmen. There's no escaping them, whenever he gets killed his ordeal starts all over again. A good five months in he discovers his wife might be the root of his problem, with infinite time to spend he decides to find out what she got him into, hoping to find a way to stop it. The action is pretty explosive and over-the-top, the styling is pleasant, characters are larger than life and the pacing of the first quarter is fine. But then the film slows down, we get flashbacks with endless explanations and the pacing drops considerably. I could've done without all that, but at least the film's repetitive nature didn't ruin it completely.

48. 3.5* - Send Me to the Clouds [Song o Shang Qing Yun] by Congcong Teng (2019)

A more than decent drama that shows a lot of promise, but can't seem to fully commit to its arthouse aesthetic. There are moments of true beauty here, but then there are also scenes that feel just a little too flimsy. It's the perfect award-winning film in other words, and that it did. Sheng Nan is only 29 when she is diagnosed with cancer. She doesn't have her life on the rails yet, and she can't pay for the treatment. A friend of hers lands her a well-paid job, a writing gig for an entrepreneur's father. Her mother, not knowing Sheng is ill, joins her on the trip, which becomes somewhat of an existential journey. The cinematography is beautiful, performances are strong (Chen Yao stands out) and the drama is solid. The pacing is a bit impatient though and there are some lighter moments that don't really fit in with the rest of the film. There's certainly a lot to like here, but it stops just short of being a masterpiece.

Image

49. 3.5* - Red Post on Escher Street [Escher Dori no Akai Posuto] by Sion Sono (2020)

Sono's latest is a pretty light film. There's none of his usual craziness (or at least, very little), there's no excessive violence, harsh drama or over-the-top absurdities. It's actually a film you can watch with your family around. So instead we get a slightly larger than life comedy that meanders from beginning to end. Kobayashi is a popular and respected director. For his next film he's looking for a cast of amateur actors, so he spreads his casting call around and accepts all the applications. The film plays like a series of vignettes, detailing the lives of all the people who applied for the audition. 150 minutes is a bit much for a film with no clear endgame. Performances are good (Morgan Mara is a real find - I'm certain we'll be seeing her again), the cinematography is nice and there are some solid smiles, but in the end it lacks something that kept me fully engaged for the entire runtime. Not Sono's best, but even his more pedestrian films are well worth a watch.

Finally some good films
01. 1.5* - The Harvest by John McNaughton (2013)

Thank you, I was not aware of this. I love Gibson, Watts and the action genre, so it's going on my watchlist.

4. Uranium (Magnus Isacsson, 1990) 6/10

Decent NFB documentary about the environmental issues around uranium mining in Canada, particularly focused on the issues of the first people. Perhaps a bit too light on content.

Day 28:

195. Zazà (1944, Renato Castellani) - 5/10
--- This Italian version is a classy picture, but I can't rate it higher as I've seen both Gloria Swanson (in the 1923 silent version) and Claudette Colbert (in the 1938 sound version) do more memorable performances as Zaza. The thing is that Isa Miranda does a more serious adaptation of the role, while the other two made theirs being over-the-top. In that sense Miranda's Zaza was less entertaining, but the one to go for if wanting the straight dramatic version of this tragic romance.

196. Golden Gloves (1940, Edward Dmytryk) - 5/10
--- Solid B-picture with a crooked boxing racket storyline. Deeper storytelling than usual, though, still rough with the finesses of production details. What's important, I found the film and its boxing theme entertaining.

197. Margie (1940, Otis Garrett & Paul Gerard Smith) - 5/10
--- Super silly songwriters spoof, but it had the right guys for it. Any film where you have Allen Jenkins, Edgar Kennedy & Mischa Auer mocking about, is a sure giggler. And just as an example of how serious this picture took itself, it ended with a Andy Devine cameo invading the music room shooting guns as if he was in the wild west, saying "Excuse me, I guess I'm in the wrong picture". That's exactly the knucklehead I imagine him being in real life.

198. South to Karanga (1940, Harold D. Schuster) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Potboiler action set in Africa. Got plenty of problems, but i found the mix entertaining enough for such a undeniable B-movie.

199. Men Without Souls (1940, Nick Grinde) - 4/10
--- One of those rough in prison movies where preacher John Litel tries to improve prison conditions where nasty convict Barton MacLane makes trouble and enforcer Cy Kendall abuses his position violently. And while they feud it out, in comes a fresh Glenn Ford looking for revenge on his father's death. A clear story, but a little too caricature to really believe in it. Absolutely seen worse, but this wasn't exactly polished.

200. Flaming Lead (1939, Sam Newfield) - 2/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Sam Newfield remakes his equally terrible The Lion's Den (1936) swapping Tim McCoy for Ken Maynard, without that improving anything. Dave O'Brien as a drunken fool was some of the worst acting I've seen in a while! At least it gave some unintentional laughs. Or perhaps it was intentional. It was bad either way.

201. Two Gun Troubador (1939, Raymond K. Johnson) - 2/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- The simple story became almost too intricate for them to handle. Trying too hard for a singing cowboy flick with Fred Scott, that's for sure!

Spoiler
1. Gas House Kids (1946, Sam Newfield) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!

It's so new you can't even vote on it yet (on IMDb), so it's not surprising it "slipped by" you I guess :)
It's decent action fun, but I preferred Carnahan's Smokin' Aces.

I have that on DVD. Haven't watched it yet. A friend recommended it.
I honestly suggest watching the non-porn version on the DVD (if it's the Vinegar Syndrome release, it has both). While they cut the sex scenes down, they also add about 20 additional minutes of dialogue and character development that makes it a genuinely decent movie and not just a novelty.

Good to know, thanks! It is indeed the VS DVD. I'll make a mental note to watch both cuts when I get around to it.

A thriller from Carlos Enrique Taboada. Best known for his horror movies, this actually sits fine next to the rest of Taboada's output with the characters experiencing real life horrors of their own after taking an advantage of a real life horror (looting a plane crash). The second half of the film is not quite as effective as the first half with large bouts of time dedicated to routine police procedural scenes, but it all ends on powerful bird's-eye shot.

And that's probably it from me. I might squeeze in another Unofficial film tomorrow, but I doubt it, and in case I don't, a big thanks for running this challenge, shugs - and keeping it interesting with all of your amazing stats. You're doing a great job. B)

Thanks. I've been meaning to do the stats every ten days, but I kinda forgot about the second batch. :satstunned: Will be more attentive in the 80s challenge.

122. The Snowman (2017)
Man, this should've been a homerun... A Nordic noir from the director of Let The Right One In starring Michael Fassbender. Maybe that's why it engenders so much hate? I honestly didn't think it was awful. The script did have some pretty dumb plot points and dialogue at times, and it has some unnecessary lame dubbing from certain actors. Otherwise it's a pretty mediocre "track down a killer" thriller with some very nice wintery cinematography.

Image
123. Inferno (1953)
Robert Ryan finds himself in a 127 Hours meets Impact story that at times feels a little like a western mainly for the setting. It's a decent movie, and Robert Ryan is one of my favorites. I do wonder what watching it in 3D would add though.

Image
124. I, Jane Doe (1948)
Pretty middling courtroom thriller that's fairly predictable but with satiate your hunger for trial drama if you want some.

Image
125. Fuzz (1972)
Based on one of Ed McBain's 87th Precinct novels from his own script, despite being a film about detectives (played by Burt Reynolds, Jack Weston and Tom Skerritt) on the hunt for mad bomber Yul Brenner, it doesn't have much of a sense of urgency to it, just kind of careening from one random thing to another. It was ok for a Saturday afternoon watch but lacked substance.

126. Un monstruo de mil cabezas a.k.a. Monster with a Thousand Heads (2015)
I generally agree with sol's assessment on this one. It's good but I found the act of watching it to be incredibly frustrating watching people succumb to mindless bureaucracy.

Image
127. Répertoire des villes disparues a.k.a. Ghost Town Anthology (2019)
In more than just the weather, this film is cold. The emotions ever-present in this small town of detached people, searching for answers they don't really want to find, are muted as if the whole town was put on ice after the death that the whole film revolves around. The glacial pacing is almost too slow for its own good at times though. There are stretches of the film, particularly in the middle, where I honestly lost track of what the actual plot was as it gives way to sparse conversations that lead nowhere. It does have some haunting imagery, the "ghosts" suspended in midair with those eerie, eyeless masks, almost lost in a winter wasteland. I'm not certain I fully liked this one a great deal, but I at least appreciate what director Denis Côté is attempting to convey.

I have that on DVD. Haven't watched it yet. A friend recommended it.
I'll have to disagree with your friend - I don't recommend it. Still, I guess it was an interesting try.

50. 3.0* - Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey by David E. Talbert (2020)

A black, steampunk-inspired Christmas musical, that's something I hadn't seen before. Netflix spared no expense bringing director Talbert's dream project to life, and there's quite a lot to be excited about, though I think it could've done without the musical bits. John Legend didn't do a great job there. Jeronicus is a famous inventor/toy maker who comes up with the most magical inventions. When he manages to bring a puppet to life, he feels luck is finally smiling down on him. That night his apprentice steals his book of inventions and takes off to build his own toy emporium. Jeronicus is so disappointed he loses the will to invent. The sets are gorgeous, the animated bits are amazing and the steampunk aesthetic really adds something unique to the film. Performances are decent and the Christmas vibe is quite effective. If only they could've killed the songs (which would've solved the excessive runtime too). Not bad.

51. 1.5* - The Girls Rebel Force of Competitive Swimmers [Joshikyôei Hanrangun] by Kôji Kawano (2007)

A high school swim team, a virus outbreak and girls holding various weapons on the cover. Yes, this is another shlocky Japanese horror, and like most of these films, the only way to find out whether there's some fun to be had is to subject yourself to them. Sadly this is one is a pretty big fluke. Sayaka, a gifted athlete, joins her school's swim team. No sooner has she started her training or a mysterious virus takes over the school. There's nobody who can help the girls, so it's up to them to stand up against the zombies that are after them. It's not the most gracious plot in the world, but what did you expect. Films like these are all about the gore and the action, but it's all rather cheap. Director Kawano doesn't appear very talented either, the cast is weak and though the film is short, the pacing is a complete mess. People attacking each other with chainsaws is always fun, the rest of the film doesn't do these moments justice. Pretty disappointing.

Day 29, started early ended late, for a very productive movie day:

202. Death Goes North (1939, Frank McDonald) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Co-Canadian production through Colombia Pictures, filmed up in British Columbia, and naturally there is a Mountie doing the investigating. Not much of star-power, but it does have Rin Tin Tin Jr., and more importantly the final appearance of slimy British character Jameson Thomas before he passed away. And it's a good one for him. Easily the best thing in a otherwise unimpressive production.

203. Unexpected Father (1939, Charles Lamont) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Baby Sandy causes chaos in men's life. As she always did. She always made good money for the studio as well, so these films where popular at the time, but largely forgotten since. To modern eyes they're neither great nor terrible, but very much a product of its time. As is Unexpected Father (1939) where probable Mischa Auer gets the most out of the material.

204. Little Accident (1939, Charles Lamont) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- The thing with these Baby Sandy movies, they get more fuzzy than funny. At the same time they usually include several comic actors I love, so I end up enjoying the annoyance by default. But I'm rather pleased I'll never have to see a Baby Sandy movie again, for I've now seen them all!

205. Yes, Madam? (1939, Norman Lee) - 6/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- I usually enjoy myself some Bobby Howes. He could make even the most light and ridiculous material a joy. And he sure does miracles with Yes, Madam? (1939). Favorite bits was working with that large lady, including a bouncy dance! But there were a lot of little things to laugh at. Simply a well-paced minor screen musical.

206. There Ain't No Justice (1939, Pen Tennyson) - 6/10
--- The directorial debut of Pen Tennyson, Alfred Hitchcock's assistant on some of his best British work. He would only have time to direct three films before he passed away in a plane accident in 1941. A sad loss, for the great-grandson the poet Lord Alfred Tennyson had an eye for detail. He took a rather ordinary and mildly budgeted boxing story and did some good things with it. From the minor dramatic effects to that massive and hilarious boxing brawl that concluded this knock-out. This was a quality debut, which also completes my filmography of the guy.

207. Discoveries (1939, Redd Davis) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- The idea is to discover new talent, but I felt Discoveries (1939) became more of who to avoid. The thing is that most seemed to come as somebody else, so you got terrible impersonators of Groucho Marx, Laurel & Hardy, W.C. Fields, and so on. and most of the jokes landed flat on the floor. So the appeal become the unintentional.

208. Some Like It Hot (1939, George Archainbaud) - 5/10
--- Closest you get to Bob Hope doing a routine musical comedy, as opposed to him doing a Bob Hope comedy. You get a more toned down Hope, and more polished experience. That leaves out the more zany dry humor he's known for, but he's a pro that can make this type of material work too. A entertaining minor comedy in his repertoire.

209. A Woman Is the Judge (1939, Nick Grinde) - 5/10
--- An alternative adaptation of the Madame X melodrama. Production is plain, but the chosen cast filled the void with their individual personalities which mixed well. Frieda Inescort made a dignified performance as the female judge, Rochelle Hudson was the stubborn-headed girl she was supposed to be. Bogey's wife Mayo Methot gave the right kind of energy as her best friend, and Otto Kruger was the slick prosecutor you'd expect him to be. Not an amazing film by any measure, but it made the most out of what it had at its disposal.

210. The Royal Visit (1939, Frank Badgley) - 5/10
--- A detailed look at the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth's month-long visit to Canada in 1939. Those into royal history will be spoiled with the footage here. This trip was a major deal back then and you can see the spectacle as streets are flooded with people wanting to get a look at the royal pair.

211. Terra Willy: Planète inconnue [Astro Kid] (2019, Eric Tosti) - 6/10
--- It's not the pace for everyone, but I really appreciated the exploration focus of this space adventure. Where most modern animation films of this level cram in as much action as possible, this one takes its time and creates a family friendly feel as this kid and his robot discover a new planet and the alien wild life on it. I liked it. So did the rest of the family. My boy didn't really want to see it at first, being busy watching the iPad, but he soon found himself drawn too it as well.

212. Dragons: Rescue Riders: Huttsgalor Holiday (2020, DreamWorks Animation) - 2/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Apart from a tiny dose of Christmas spirit, this had nothing to offer. Even the kids gradually drifted out of the experience. Thankfully it was over fairly quick.

213. I'm from Missouri (1939, Theodore Reed) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- A fun enough time with Bob Burns, with strong support from Gladys George and a few others. Nothing super funny, but does what you'd expect from a comedy with the rugged fella.

128. Dark (2017)
So this is the infamous director's cut of the mediocre Nicholas Cage thriller Dying of the Light. The behind-the-scenes story on this one is pretty interesting in and of itself. Basically the cut Schrader delivered to producers was similar to this version in that the editing is experimental and jittery, Schrader's attempt to convey the deteriorating state of Cage's character's mind. The producers, expecting a more generic director-for-hire thriller that they could churn out on video for a quick buck, took the elements away from Schrader and re-edited the picture into what they wanted and released it as Dying of the Light after which Schrader, Cage, Anton Yelchin and Nicolas Winding Refn (an executive producer on the film that had no control over the final product either) staged a silent protest by appearing in a press photo wearing shirts with their NDA clause on them. Schrader apparently harbored a major chip on his shoulder about this whole incident and a couple years later basically went back and re-edited, chopped and screwed the film to his liking in secret using inferior workprint DVDs which were all he had at his disposal of the original materials after which he leaked it onto torrents himself stating he wanted his version of the film made available for historical purposes.

Ok, so the question is, how was it? So I can definitely see why the producers, expecting a straight-forward thriller about Cage hunting terrorists, balked at this version of the film. This isn't just a rote typical director's cut that adds or removes things here or there but ultimately plays out like an almost completely different movie and shows what a big impact editing can have on a film. This version is littered with fractured jump cuts, layered, echoed, distorted dialogue and other editing tricks to simulate Cage's mental state which grows progressively more erratic as the film progresses. It's also nearly 30 minutes shorter than the official release which heightens the disjointed nature of it. I actually thought this version, other than some inferior-source issues, plays out pretty interestingly (to be fair, I still haven't seen the Dying of the Light version in full... just skimmed parts of it for scene comparisons). Cage is increasingly manic and flagrantly racist, embodying a certain kind of red state, 'Murica mentality that started to really gain traction in the years after 9/11. Yelchin as the younger more skeptical protégé is quite good too. I could see film classes screening the two versions back to back as an exercise in showing the power of post-production.

Decent nunsploitation flick that doesn't quite rise to the heights of ridiculous that movies like The Other Hell bring to the table.

Image
131. The Stone Killer (1973)
Bronson heads to L.A. to get to the bottom of a mafia plot to recruit Vietnam vets to do their bidding while mixing it up with hippies along the way.

Image
132. Trespass (2011)
Another Cage flick, this one starts as a pretty dull home invasion robbery story and starts twisting in other still fairly uninteresting directions.

Image
133. The Phantom of 42nd Street (1945)
A sort of riff on Phantom of the Opera but posited as a 40's investigative whodunnit. It felt fairly flat and uninteresting most of the time.

Image
134. El hombre sin rostro a.k.a. Man Without A Face (1950)
This was a pretty solid flick that acts almost as a proto-slasher at times. The faceless killer looks pretty effective and creepy and the movie has a good pace. Recommended.

(l) (l) I'm so ecstatic and thankful that this has been subbed and so glad too that you appear to have loved it, jd. I shall have to watch it again soon to refresh my memory of it. I cherish the poignancy and humanity that is seen in these two little girls during these wartime struggles, with their dedication and dutifulness but also their childish side evident in wonderings, explorations, brief moments of playfulness. I just watched a very special one from Miguel Morayta last night, after seeing your high ratings for his films. Thanks so much for allowing me to remember the director at this time of year! I don't think I liked 'Hipócrita..!' (1949) quite as much as you, but this subsequent one (that I'll name and log here later, haahaa) really hit me hard.

36. Fando y Lis, by Alejandro Jodorowski (1968) 8/10

37. The Virtues ep. 1 (2019) 7,5/10
38. The Virtues ep. 2 (2019) 7,5/10
39. The Virtues ep. 3 (2019) 7,5/10
40. The Virtues ep. 4 (2019) 8,5/10

This mini-series, directed by Shane Meadows, is a heart-breaking drama, played by Stephen Graham with a score by PJ Harvey. One needs to be in a good mood before watching it...

41. Kagenaki koe, by Seijun Suzuki (1958) 6/10

42. Apache Drums, by Hugo Fregonese (1951) 8/10

That's a great western. I loved the final scenes...

43. The Myth of the American Sleepover, by David Robert Mitchell (2010) 7,5/10

A bittersweet depiction of youth and the trouble of their love life, both blurry yet filled with self-doubt and the need to be accepted and loved. A nice film.

44. Sea Fever, by Neasa Hardiman (2019) 7/10

The film is well-done, even though the plot isn't really originalor inventive. Still, the marine environment is a nice setting for such a film...

PS : I watched Yip Man 4, thinking it wouldn't be on any list, but I was surprised to find out it got to the box-office list, when neither the 2nd of 3rd did... In any case is wasn't a bad watch, not really great, but I found it to conclude nicely the Yip Man series.
Is this official yet ? (35)

65. Belushi (2020) <--- great film. But I am also a huge Belushi and SNL fan
66. Hillbilly Elegy (2020) <--- "the book was better", but also if you didn't read the book its a decent movie. It is scary how much it mimics my own life.
67. Greenland (2020) <---- a different take on the apocalypses film. I thought it was ok.
68. Instructions Not Included (2013) <--- I am a sap for movies like this. I loved this one.
69. We Are the Nobles (2013) <--- recommended by a coworker. Kind of reminded me of Schitt's Creek. A decent movie.
70. No manches Frida (2016)
