44. 3.5* - Girl's Revenge [Ha Luo Shao Nu] by Weica Wang (2020)

Films about bullying aren't that uncommon, but this one promised to mix in some thriller/revenge elements, so I was pretty interested to see how Taiwan would handle that. Taiwan isn't really known for its overly edgy cinema and that's exactly what this film ends up missing. Either some extra grit or a bigger commitment to the drama would've made this into a real masterpiece. Yun-heng transfers to a new school after a rather nasty incident, there she befriends Li-chia. Ke-chien is also trying to butter up to Yun-heng, but her attempts feel shallow and dishonest. Yun-heng and Li-chia quickly become best friends, but when they go to a party together Li-chia ends up having sex with a boy, the next day a video surfaces online. The cinematography is extremely stylish and performances are great across the board. The soundtrack is pretty atmospheric too, it's just the plot that feels a little toothless. The film's a bit too sweet and polished for the revenge to have a major impact. I think it would've been better if they'd just gone full drama. Director Weica Wang shows a lot of promise though, looking forward to her next film.

--- Doesn't quite nail it, but I still had fun with this British/Irish family dysfunction. Much to do with me loving Margaret Rutherford. Such a character! To think this was 20 years before she did the Miss Marple films, and she already looked like that!


169. The Parson of Panamint (1941, William C. McGann) - 6/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- This was a unexpected minor surprise. A western drama where a preacher shows the human compassion religion is supposed to stand for. Unfortunately, capitalists in town want his philosophy out of town. And out of that comes a rather entertaining drama with plenty of wild west bits. I wouldn't have minded a more dynamic leading man, but to be fair, Phillip Terry was the peaceful soul needed to make the preacher character work. For more lively personalities, you had Charles Ruggles doing his thing, along with a interesting gambling house head in Joseph Schildkraut. 1941 wasn't exactly filled with great western movies, so this one is up there for the year.

--- Opened rather good, establishing the situation effectively. The follow-up was too standard to engage in the same manner. Perfectly fine for a George Montgomery B-western, but not a stand-out.

45. 3.5* - The Kiss [Seppun] by Kunitoshi Manda (2007)

A film that reminded me a lot of Kim Ki-duk's Breath, though rendered as a more traditional Japanese crime drama. It's a film about a woman who falls in love with a ruthless killer after having seen his arrest on television. Strange as this may sound, it's not at all unrealistic (just look at Ted Bundy's popularity). Kyoko is a mousy woman. Her colleagues take advantage of her, she doesn't have any friends or family and spends her days going through the same routines. When she sees how Sakaguchi is taken into custody, a man who murdered a family of three and then mediatized his arrest, she feels a sudden sense of familiarity. The presentation is somewhat dry, but good performances of Eiko Koike and Etsushi Toyokawa make all the difference. They give life to two rather unlikable characters and make their actions believable, though no easy answers are offered. Solid drama, an intriguing premise and two fine actors make for a good film.

This benefits from a decent premise and there are some creepy moments thanks to the smallest of details like taunting sound effects in the game. There is also some decent gore. The film does not play up its best hand though. The most striking element is the ironic ways in which their wishes are granted (fame wish results infamy) a la Wishmaster, but far more time is dedicated though to them discussing what to do and having petty arguments.

104. La loba a.k.a. The She-Wolf (1965)
This was a pretty solid werewolf flick from Mexico featuring a lovely young woman cursed with lycanthropy and the doctor who attempts to save her. There's also a cool dog. I approve.


105. Ruben Brandt, a gyujto a.k.a. Ruben Brandt, Collector (2018)
Fun with an interesting modern art aesthetic, Ruben Brandt, Collector whisks us through it's art heist setup while it's central detective attempts to discover who's behind it all. The plot really isn't anything special, but I do have a soft spot for heist films in general as well as visually unique animation. As a result, I still enjoyed it even though by the end, I didn't feel like it had left much of a lasting impression.


106. The Case Against Brooklyn (1958)
This flat, lifeless noir follows fresh-faced undercover cops as they attempt to bring down a grafting operation within the police department. It's an earlier film from director Paul Wendkos who by the late '60s would settle into a very long career churning out TV movies in large volume which certainly suits his bland directing style more. Hey, not every director is an auteur, you know. Somebody's gotta direct Gidget Goes To Rome and Cocaine: One Man's Seduction.


107. Foreign Intrigue (1956)
Robert Mitchum goes on a globe-trotting investigation to uncover a plot involving the blackmailing of Nazis. It gets needlessly convoluted at times and the tone seems to swerve from gritty noir to fun adventure on a dime. It just didn't work for me despite Mitchum's presence who can usually elevate the most banal of material.


108. Kaosu a.k.a. Chaos (2000)
Very twisty thriller from J-horror director Hideo Nakata (Ringu, Ju-On), I actually liked this more than many of his horror films, although I will say it's the kind of movie you have to really play close attention to. There are a lot of plot turns and time jumps to keep track of and if you miss just a minute or two, you could potentially get lost.


109. Cosh Boy a.k.a. The Slasher (1953)
The kids aren't alright in this British juvenile delinquent pic that definitely goes for sensationalism with James Kenney in the lead role as a relentlessly unlikeable hoodlum who just wants to cause as much harm as possible any way he can. In some ways, Kenney and his boys remind me of Alex and his gang in A Clockwork Orange.


110. El Diablo Ha Invadido Mi Sangre (2019)
Uh...hm... This shot-on-video trash flick is one of the more suitably bizarre things I've seen in a while. The plot is an Exorcist ripoff involving demon possession but that's not a reason to watch. I honestly can't tell if this is supposed to be a comedy or not. There are parts that definitely seem to want to be creeping like the opening scene but then the movie throws in a random close-up of a cat or a full-length music video with monsters playing instruments in the middle of a scene with no rhyme or reason. It's also obvious some of the actors do not speak Spanish and are pronouncing their Spanish dialogue phonetically (the actor playing the priest, who has ridiculously stupid looking prosthetics, even laughs while tripping over his lines at one point). Man, some of the stuff you find on youtube....

A party, a cast of intensely annoying characters, quirks that are supposed to be funny, tons of woke and at the end we're suddenly supposed to care for everyone. It's not impossible to pull off, but you'd need way smarter writing or way better actors to come even close to making this a success. Molly is spending Thanksgiving alone with Abby. They are both recovering from a broken relationship and don't feel the need to celebrate. But then all kinds of people start inviting themselves over and before they know it they're having a real party on their hands. Realizing they won't be able to send everyone home, they decide to just go along with it. Performances are mediocre, the comedy feels stale and expected and the comradery that is supposed to give the drama some weight is completely absent. At least the mood is light and the pacing is decent, it's not a complete disaster to sit through, but a very funny and/or enjoyable comedy this is not.

30. The 120 Days of Bottrop (1997, Christoph Schlingensief) - 2/5

"Eccentric" is the word, I guess. I'm pretty familiar with Rainer Werner Fassbinder despite not having seen much of his work yet, but I don't think I understand German humor, because most of The 120 Days of Bottrop falls completely flat for me. It's rarely funny and there are hardly any moments related to Salo, though those are of course the highlights. I expected to be amused by this film and came away rather disappointed, feeling that it drags at even its hour-long runtime. Perhaps it would have been more tolerable as a short.

--- Attempt at a historic drama connecting various events to enemy invasion. While it's lovely to see Constance Cummings again, the film for me doesn't set a proper root with it shifting through eras. Some of the acting felt a little too theater-y to ignite watching something special. Might have had a proper purpose with the start of World War II, but doesn't quite nail it.

--- A recycled adventure from Frank Buck. Clipping together three of his documentaries from the early 30s. I've only seen Bring 'Em Back Alive (1932), so watching the animal action from Wild Cargo (1934) and Fang and Claw (1935) had its moments. Still it's milking old footage, so if interested in old school wild life, one is better off tracking down the original films..... if possible.

--- A couple of guys chasing a dame who stole their pearls. Said to be a action-adventure-romance, but it's comedy. Fun in parts, but very corny. Hardly the most refined scripts, but for a time-waster it probable delivers what the producer ordered.

--- Certainly was a cheerful fraud as two New York performers adapt a Latin style to get a gig. Eventually leads to a nothing finish of song and dance, but I can't deny I was having a good time with this, especially with the selection of show dames picked.

--- The pairing of Gilbert Roland & Binnie Barnes wasn't sparkling, but this comedy was good. Plenty of energy, and a instrumental Billy Gilbert for the stupidity. There actually was a lot positive, just lacking the fine touches for it to be a real treat.

--- Not a Mexican Spitfire movie, but it throws Lupe Velez & Leon Errol together for the same type of chaos. Their characters are not as refined as in their movie series, but the ideas are the same. So if you liked the Spitfire movies, you'll probable have a good time with this one as well.

At times, this feels like a romantic comedy, but it is never especially funny outside of a grouchy dog, and there is little in the way of romance. What really works though is James Gandolfini's turn as a hardened mob hit-man who ends up bonding with Julia Roberts. Brad Pitt is also always engaging to watch. His character here though is a little hard to pin down, halfway between Rusty Ryan from Ocean's Eleven and Chad from Burn After Reading.

The first act of here is pretty humdrum and, to be honest, feels a little dated with all the hoo-ha over letting a woman do a dangerous job usually done by men. The second act gets somewhat more interesting as she is partnered with a hard-nosed Fred MacMurray and has to make up stories of being a career criminal since kindergarten (!), but it is still not a lot for a feature length film. The film also never really works as a comedy or a romance.

--- This was from the time Republic Pictures's production was starting to look on par with the big studios B-pictures, but they had the pacing down. Dennis O'Keefe was alright, and made sure there was life on screen. Still didn't feel like one was watching anything special. Just another standard Hollywood production, of which there were many.

Guess the adventure portion was alright, but it wasn't a story that gained much steam. So reasons why this one is largely ignored.

While a lot of nonsense, I did end up enjoying Sandy Is a Lady (1940) because of the large amount of favorites joining in on the babysitting horrors, especially Eugene Pallette!

--- Reunites Stuart Erwin & Una Merkel, but Una got disappointingly little to do here. But that's the thing with these Baby Sandy movies, It's all about the men panicking trying to babysit this adventurous child, so no room for Una. Erwin got his moments. So did Edgar Kennedy. But this was mostly a chaotic mess.

--- Super silly movie. Tom Brown was the weak link in Oh, Johnny, How You Can Love! (1940), but Peggy Moran had some fun scenes. But this wouldn't have been as fun hadn't mobster Allen Jenkins dropped in. And I doubt I'll ever forget the cowboy mechanic inventor Donald Meek. Both for the inventions and that they actually gave him hair (until it came off for the fireworks)!

With dashes of Videodrome, A Nightmare on Elm Street and Eyes of Laura Mars, this has several striking elements, but by borrowing from such varied sources, the whole thing feels convoluted without its own mythology. The pacing is off too with much focus spent on high school hijinks and crushes, even with the horror begins. The film is at least unique by having its near adult lead character dressed in dinosaur pajamas more than half the time.

111. Alice T. (2018)
Alice T. is bolstered primarily by the lead performance of Andra Guti who embodies the rebellious pregnant teen fully, coming across very genuine, more than many movies I've seen. I feel it also does a solid job building out the complex relationship between Alice and her adopted mother. It does seem to lack something of a narrative thrust at times and other supporting characters seem to exist mostly to act as either window decoration or as someone who exists to build out Alice herself more. Still it's a good film with some very well-done scenes even though it doesn't quite come together as a complete whole.


112. Five Miles to Midnight (1962)
Sophia Loren is great in this dark noir and Perkins himself is interesting to watch even though he doesn't seem to really fit the personality of the character. Overall it's pretty good but feels a little too cluttered narratively.


113. The Bloody Brood (1959)
Peter Falk stars as a murderous beatnik who becomes fascinated with the idea of killing someone who wouldn't ever be missed. I'd guess this was inspired by Leopold & Loeb much like Hitchcock's Rope. Although in execution they're wildly different. While Rope felt very meticulously planned (much like the murder itself), this one has more of a reckless vibe with Falk and his partner killing a kid without much planning which would lead to everything falling apart.


114. The House on Carroll Street (1988)
Taking place in the 1950's, the film features Kelly McGillis playing a woman who was fired for refusing to name names during the HUAC trials and enlists the help of FBI man Jess Daniels to help her uncover a plot by the government to harbor Nazis. The period detail is quite good almost to the detriment of the actual plot which feels a little too heavy-handed predictable with incredibly one-dimensional characters. The way its filmed is also fairly flat and uninspired. Still if you want a newer film that attempts to replicate the look of noir without the soul, this will do.


115. Terror y encajes negros a.k.a. Terror & Black Lace (1985)
Terror & Black Lace is essentially a Mexican giallo with nearly all the trappings that entails (other than its non-existent soundtrack, so often a key component of many gialli). Unfortunately like many gialli, the film does take its time building up to its climax. While the first hour is indeed very slow in places, mostly doing character building, the last 30 minutes or so, is actually quite good and certainly better than some of its Italian inspiration.


116. One Minute Before Death a.k.a. The Oval Portrait (1972)
Apparently this Mexico/Canada co-production was based on an Edgar Allan Poe story but has been heavily padded and is full of ridiculously over-the-top melodrama and cheese. The characters act in such exaggerated ways at times that I found myself laughing at how goofy they come across, especially its ending.


117. L'assassino (1961)
Dang, Marcello Mastrioanni just can't help being cool, even when he's playing the hapless victim of bureaucracy. The film essentially cuts back and forth in time between his dalliance with an older woman and the eventual police investigation leading his arrest for the murder of this ex-lover. Mastrioanni is great here as the film builds out his character and his past romances and is really the centerpiece of the movie. Elio Petri, underrated director of Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, keeps a steady tension and air of anxiety as the film builds out its "Is he guilty" narrative with some great shot composition and a very cool jazz soundtrack. The ending felt a little lacking but is really a pretty small complaint. Overall, this is one of the better films I've seen this month.


118. The Kennel Murder Case (1933)
William Powell plays Philo Vance in a warm-up for the mystery solving antics of The Thin Man (replete with a small dog in tow!). In general though The Kennel Murder Case certainly doesn't have near the sense of fun and charisma as Nick's & Nora's antics despite Michael Curtiz' steady direction and a fairly interesting central mystery. Still there are glimmers of Powell's real star-making turn the following year.


119. The Door with Seven Locks a.k.a. Chamber of Horrors (1940)
I had to fit a little Edgar Wallace in here somewhere. I had actually watched the 1962 German version of this earlier this year (it's on the BFI Euro Horror list despite not really being horror) and I'd say this one in similar in quality although feels a little creaky in places.


120. Malchik russkiy a.k.a. A Russian Youth (2019)
On the surface this very clearly seemed to be inspired by Alexadre Sokurov's aesthetic. When you look a little deeper though, unlike Sokurov's fixation on painterly compositions, A Russian Youth is much more concerned with the aural experience, the cacophony of war juxtaposed with the graceful frenzy of the Rachmaninoff pieces. As an audio/visual experience it's an interesting one, although it feels somewhat lacking in the character development department. Our titular youth feels more like a conduit to convey the experience of WWI warfare and remains something of a blank slate in terms of really understanding who he is by the end.


121. Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
This was a pretty decent follow-up to the first film. In absence of Emily Blunt, this film lives in a much more morally grey area with Brolin's "for the greater good" mentality as one driving force and Benecio Del Toro's more loose cannon, unpredictable nature as the other. I didn't think any of the set pieces were as intense as some in the first film but it certainly tries. Overall, I think if you enjoyed the first one, you'll probably find something here to appreciate as well.
