I sort of remember seeing an ad for this, but I never got around to seeing it. I guess it did not translate well to the big screen?

28.Man of the World, by Richard Wallace & Edward Goodman (1931) 6,5/10

Nice love story, not really great, but it's cute and goes to the point.

29. Paradies: Glaube, by Ulich Seidl (2012) 7/10

I didn't really get the point of the story, but it is nonetheless dark, extreme and very original.

39. Sekala Niskala AKA The Seen and Unseen (2017) - Kamila Andini
40. Jallikattu (2019) - Lijo Jose Pellissery

L'heure de la sortie started out with a decent enough premise, but then there were some very basic plot holes that sort of drove me insane because they become central to the story. I do not want to post spoilers but these are basic concepts about working with modern day technology that literally anyone his age should be able to handle without it causing severe mental distress. If you consider this a horror film and assign the protagonist the typical "horror victim idiocy" quotient, it is somewhat forgivable, but then it goes off the rails again going into the final 15-20 minutes in ways that I find less forgiving. For a better treatment of a similar theme that is not as dumbed down, I would recommend the novel The Secret History by Donna Tartt.

I can honestly say that Hagazussa is the first time I have ever seen someone ominously wash their hair. I think maybe I would need to watch this again to pick up on some subtle parts of the film that I missed on my first viewing, because I was mostly confused at the end as to what happened. I understand the broad strokes, I suppose, but there are definitely some logical connections that seem to be missing based on my understanding as to various events and relationships.

I normally do not call out films that I dislike, but I really, really disliked Jallikattu. It has very high production values, and the cinematography and sound editing were great. However I did not like the acting much, and if I needed to be beaten over the head with the director's message repeatedly, I hope that I could have found a better way to do it than watching this film. This is basically an adaptation of William Golding's Lord of the Flies, only without as much careful consideration to character development and more pandering to the audience.

Nah. Maybe I would have liked it more if I hadn't played the games. As it is, I felt the humor fell flat and the investigation part of the game isn't really well represented. Also thought they tried to cram too much for its runtime. There are some nice shots here and there, tho, and the guy playing Larry Butz was spot on.

I do understand that this film will be quite divisive and will not appeal to all viewers, but I'm curious as to the link you mention with Lord of the flies, as there are no children nor island in the film...

32. The Trial of the Chicago 7, by Aaron Sorkin (2020) 8/10

Here's another film with great dialogues and great actors. Quite a good film too...

33. The Pursuit of Happiness, by Robert Mulligan (1972) 6/10

I see the intent from Mulligan to question the limitations of freedom, but here the character's behaviour is so silly it's hard to really care about him.

34. Los Bastardos, by Amat Escalante (2008) 5,5/10

Not too sure what this film tries to tell me, but it was certainly slow, very slow...

I liked it quite a bit, then again never played the games (which might've helped).

Edit: hah, reading Shugs' reaction now :D
:P Give them a try, they're pretty amazing.
So I've played through nearly all the games. I also watched this movie in pretty close proximity to watching the anime also. Honestly I don't know that the movie could've been much better. Watching both the movie and anime has really brought to my attention just how ridiculously over-the-top the games can get at times. For what it's worth, I kinda liked the movie personally, but keep in mind it does embrace the camp of the games for sure.

41. 3.5* - Pledge by Daniel Robbins (2018)

Not the first film about hazing, though I don't think I've ever seen it done as a horror film. That's a bit of surprise, as the topic really is a perfect match for the genre. As far as consensual torture goes, there really isn't much else that comes close. It's a smart pairing by Robbins, who keeps the rest of the film simple and concise. David, Ethan and Justin are your stereotypical nerds. A trio of socially awkward guys who don't really belong in a fraternity. After several rejections, they get an invitation to go to a special event. Seeing it as their last chance, they oblige and end up at a strange house where a big party is about to get started. Pledge is a very straightforward film. After a short introduction the film quickly turns dark and before you know it the whole situation is spinning gleefully out of control. Performances are solid, the mood is on point and the ending is pretty gruesome. A lean horror film, but very effective and trimmed of all the unnecessary excess.

xx. 3.5* - Kalanchoe [Karankoe no Hana] by Shun Nakagawa (2017)

Pretty interesting to see a film tackle LGBT acceptance head on. Kalanchoe avoids the typical coming out clichés and setup by adding a little mystery twist, though the film is still very much a drama at its core. It offers some nice variation within a niche that tends to be a little too focused on mere identification. During study hour, a class gets a short lecture on LGBT and how it has become a normal part of our society. When one of the students finds out that they were the only class to get the lecture, it doesn't take long before rumors start flying around. Many people are suspected, but nobody is coming forward. Performances are very good, the direction is gentle and the novel dynamic really adds something extra. It's a shame the film is rather short, it would've been nice to see this stretched out into a feature-length project. Because of its short length Kalanchoe lacks a little dramatic punch, but well worth watching.

I do understand that this film will be quite divisive and will not appeal to all viewers, but I'm curious as to the link you mention with Lord of the flies, as there are no children nor island in the film...
Think of it as a metaphorical adaptation. The villagers all behave like the children in the book. It is not on an island but the buffalo is like the incident which left these kids stranded on an island in that it takes them out of their comfort zone and poses a danger to the entire group--for which the civilized and intelligent response is ignored by the majority leading to a regression of the entire community. And the director in this movie really beats you over the head with the fact that people are regressing at every opportunity, even going so far as to make it plainly obvious in the closing scene and credits in case the audience did not pick up on it the first thousand times.

Yeah, all you got to do is stay-put and observe while the baby is sleeping, and at that period of his life it's all mama time when awake. The year my first son was born i actually watched record number of movies. Did over 2,000 feature films! Won't be anywhere near that this year, but I'll reach my annual goal this month of 1200 films in a year (100 a month) for the 9th consecutive year.

148. Pistol Packin' Mama (1943, Frank Woodruff) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Thin plotted, but I love myself a Pistol Packin' Mama (1943) and Nat 'King' Cole & his band shows up, so it gave me good vibes.

149. Get Going (1943, Jean Yarbrough) - 4/10
--- Mild entertainer, ending with possibly the most awesome Barbara Jo Allen moment ever put on screen. What a punch!

150. How's About It? (1943, Erle C. Kenton) - 4/10
--- Highlight such as the Andrews Sisters singing their cheerful tunes and Shemp Howard bringing laughs couldn't save the plot from sinking. Such a high and low clash.

151. Gals, Incorporated (1943, Leslie Goodwins) - 5/10
--- Millionaire night club sponsor Leon Errol needs a wife to keep his money and the show girls volunteer to help him out so to keep their jobs. And then his "wife" falls for his son, and the rest is jealousy fun. I had a swinging time with this, even if it's not exactly a timeless comedy, it's executed simple enough to enjoy.

152. She's for Me (1943, Reginald Le Borg) - 4/10
--- My 4th 1943 Grace McDonald comedy in a row, and I'm still not sure I'd be able to pick her out of a line-up. She's perfectly fine, but not the type of dame that leaves much of an impact, which would explain her rather short tenure in Hollywood B-movies. Turns out I've seen 21 of her 22 feature films, and I'm sure Strictly in the Groove (1942) will eventually come my way too. She'd probable be best remembered playing opposite Abbott & Costello in It Ain't Hay (1943) and Olsen & Johnson in See My Lawyer (1945). In She's for Me (1943) she showed she's probable not for me. A rather routine affair. Very light, very one-dimensional, very easy to digest. One that's little hassle sitting through and very easy to forget.

153. Follow the Band (1943, Jean Yarbrough) - 4/10
--- Had cameos from Frances Langford, Leo Carrillo and other, and it was sure needed. At least it gave a otherwise bland musical some class. This was such by-the-numbers production that not even Robert Mitchum could do much to elevate the low effort writing attached to Follow the Band (1943). The characters on top were fine, but again, there was little they could do other than get us through a standard experience.

154. Days of Old Cheyenne (1943, Elmer Clifton) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Sure, the plot was simplified for the format, but Don 'Red' Barry and his pals made for a fun road to justice. Felt the characters had a lot more depth than your standard B-western. Barry was almost nasty in the path in taking down the local crook. So entertaining to see!

155. Butch Minds the Baby (1942, Albert S. Rogell) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Crooks go babysitting... while safe cracking! Sweet and silly. A fine role for Broderick Crawford, and having Shemp Howard with thick glasses for comic relief help make the smiles coming.

--- My 4th 1943 Grace McDonald comedy in a row, and I'm still not sure I'd be able to pick her out of a line-up. She's perfectly fine, but not the type of dame that leaves much of an impact, which would explain her rather short tenure in Hollywood B-movies.
According to imdb, she stopped acting when she got married in 1944 and moved to Minnesota. It doesn't seem to have been a result of her lack of screen presence.

94. When Michael Calls (1972)
This is a TV with a young Michael Douglas about a woman who begins receiving phone calls pleading for help from her nephew who had presumably died long ago. The calls themselves are mildly creepy but the movie gives way for much of its runtime to a fairly dull crime procedural.

Image
95. The Sinister Urge (1960)
Part of an Ed Wood Double Feature, along with Jail Bait, this was probably the more entertaining of the two just for how sleazy and cartoonish it was in places. Jail Bait still had its moments but it seemed to be trying to hard to become a more traditional noir while The Sinister Urge finds Wood following his perverse tendencies more.

96. La noche de los mil gatos a.k.a. Night of a Thousand Cats (1972)
I mean, there were a lot of cats, yes. But a thousand? The Cardona dynasty continues to serve up some cheesy fun with this ludicrous flick involving a rich dude who flies women to his creepy old castle, murders them and feeds them to cats.

Image
97. Six Bridges to Cross (1955)
Man, George Nader is way too forgiving of Tony Curtis' stool pigeon criminal character. I mean, I get he's a little bummed for shooting him when he was a kid, but he was still guilty. I guess he's ok with just using him for personal gain?

I like computer hacking films way more than I should. And this had some of the familiar tropes, as well as a meta-commentary about the IoT. But the characterization didn't work, and it ended up being a mediocre thriller.

37. The Social Dilemma (2020)
Sensational and alarmist, a lot of the numbers and arguments were fuzzy and scary rather than purely convincing. I happen to agree with what they're saying, but if I didn't, I wouldn't be swayed. OK overall. I can say I deleted my Reddit app and my wife began the process of killing FB, so that's good, I guess.

38. Kathleen Madigan: Bothering Jesus (2016)
Rewatch for the umpteenth time. I love her.

57. Abby -- Girdler, 1974.
58. Class of 1984 -- M.L. Lester, 1982.
59. San Quentin -- Bacon, 1937.

Pat O'Brien is the new prison warden who tries to reform tough guy Humphrey Bogart. Not bad -- Ann Sheridan is usually a nice addition.

60. La p... respectueuse a.k.a. The Respectful Whore -- Brabant & Pagliero, 1952.

French movie based on the Sartre play, set in the American South among Americans. A white bar hostess is a witness to the murder of a black man in a black-only train car by a white senator's son. Quite good -- a shame that mine was only the tenth check.

61. Fe a.k.a. Iron -- Nakajima, 1994.

Reminds me of a live-action Oshii meets Raul Ruiz in its style -- it's an impressionistic film about the friendship between a young girl and an older, faltering artist who pursues his art at a desolate ironworks. Definitely not for everybody, but it's staying with me longer than I thought it might.

62. Padenie Berlina a.k.a. The Fall of Berlin -- Chiaureli, 1950.

THE most pro-Stalin piece of propaganda I have ever seen, which is definitely saying something. I think I read that it was made in commemoration of Stalin's 70th birthday -- it definitely plays fast and loose with historical fact, and it's so spectacularly over the top that parts of it are actually kind of funny. The actor playing Hitler also manages to go over the top, too, which is hard to do playing Hitler -- he practically froths at the mouth and screams EVERY line, even when it's just him and a guy in a modest room standing six inches apart.

63. Rawhead Rex -- Pavlou, 1986.

Bad movie in which an Irish fertility giant/monster is awakened to wreak havoc. Occasionally amusing, but not great.

64. El ataque de los pájaros a.k.a. Birds of Prey a.k.a. Beaks -- Cardona, Jr., 1987.

Same basic premise as Hitchcock's The Birds, but you get to see the birds attacking people in lots of different places in the world in this Mexican horror film. Not good.

65. The Pride and the Passion -- Kramer, 1957.

Pretty wretched Napoleonic-era picture in which British soldier Cary Grant helps Spaniards (Frank Sinatra and Sophia Loren) transport a huge cannon all the way to Ávila to try to take back the city for Spain. The picture was plagued with all kinds of drama, and Frank Sinatra makes a dreadful Spaniard.

66. Satan's Cheerleaders -- Clark, 1977.

A group of cheerleaders and their coach are sought as recruits/sacrifices to the devil. John Ireland and Yvonne De Carlo try their best as the lead devil worshippers, and the film has some so-bad-it's-good moments, but not enough of them.

67. The Strange Affair -- Greene, 1968.

As I was watching this film, I was thinking that its title was really dumb for a story of a rookie constable (Michael York) who falls in with both criminals and a corrupt, seasoned policeman, until I figured out more than halfway through the film that the rookie's surname was "Strange" -- I don't know if I just missed it before that point, or they didn't bother to say it until that point (and then they said it a ton near the end)... anyway, it makes more sense. The portion of the film about the seasoned, corrupt cop appears to be based on a real detective, though most of the story is told from the rookie's vantage.

68. Circonstances atténuantes a.k.a. Extenuating Circumstances -- J. Boyer, 1939.

I have a really soft spot for films that look at class and crime, especially comedies, so this one was right up my alley. Michel Simon (in a remarkably restrained performance) is a strict judge who winds up stranded on vacation with his wife, and they wind up sheltering at an inn/bar full of criminals, partially led by Arletty. While initially suspicious of each other, the virtuous and the nefarious gradually warm up and form friendships, even falling into each other's ways of life...sort of. The ending is somewhat annoying and might as well have been written by some prig at the Hays Office, but the rest of the film is delightful.

69. Ying zhao tie bu shan a.k.a. Invincible Armour -- Ng, 1977.

Fun martial arts film -- John Liu is a general framed for the murder of a minister lord, trying to get vengeance on the people who killed his master. Not incredibly remarkable, but still an easy watch.

70. Les parents terribles a.k.a. The Terrible Parents a.k.a. The Storm Within -- Cocteau, 1948.

Jean Marais has a VERY (somewhat uncomfortably) close relationship with his mother, but he's fallen in love with a woman who, unbeknownst to him, is his father's mistress (Josette Day). The real star of the show here is Gabrielle Dorziat, who plays the aunt who is pulled on to orchestrate events into a solution. Quite dark -- far from Cocteau's finest, and lacking much of his characteristic visual inventiveness, but still interesting.

71. Mortal Kombat: Annihilation a.k.a. Mortal Kombat 2 -- Leonetti, 1997.

Jesus, this was bad -- bad acting, bad script, HORRIBLE CGI... It was so bad that it had some funny parts, but it's definitely no Deadly Prey or Miami Connection.

42. 3.0* - Concrete Plans by Will Jewell (2020)

A nice, moody little thriller with a somewhat uncommon premise that takes a little too long to get up to speed. The first hour plays more like a drama, with only minor hints that something is awry. The final 30 minutes make up quite a lot, but not enough to turn this into a sprawling nail biter. Bob and his crew of builders have taken on a job in the high mountains of Wales. It's a big responsibility with tight deadlines, but Bob and his men really need the money. Their client is a temperamental guy who seems to be hiding something from them, Bob's suspicion only grows when the money he's owned isn't coming. Performances are good (though the accents are extremely thick), the score is atmospheric and the cinematography is decent. The introduction is overworked though and the added drama doesn't really do anything to make the film better. There's just a little too much padding, otherwise a neat little genre flick.

43. 3.0* - Duel of the Iron Fist [Da Jue Dou] by Cheh Chang (1971)

A very solid entry in Chang's seemingly endless oeuvre. It's one of his more action-oriented martial arts epics, starting off with a major (and quite violent) battle sequence and never really slowing down after that. It's what Chang does best and it's no surprise then this turned out to be one of his better films. Chieh is a young recruit who messes up when he kills the boss of his own gang. He is banished from the group and leaves his village. When he returns one year later, he learns that two rivaling gangs have joined forces. Once they're made aware that Chieh is back, he becomes their main target. It's a bit bloodier compared to most other Shaw Bros releases, apart from that it's a very standard release. The only issue I had is with the runtime, which is a bit excessive for a simple film like this. Otherwise, this is another quality Cheh Chang film that is sure to please his fans, though it won't win him any new ones.

PUNQ wrote: November 24th, 2020, 4:33 am 152.
According to imdb, she stopped acting when she got married in 1944 and moved to Minnesota. It doesn't seem to have been a result of her lack of screen presence.
Well, lets just call it a burn-out. She had the choice of settling down or do 10 more of those pointless B-pictures she'd been typecast for a year. Her personality wasn't off-putting in any way. Just didn't have "it" as far as star aura. She got plenty of work, but I doubt they were very fulfilling artistically, for they were all super light and thin plotted. Low effort Hollywood factory stuff. Would be interesting to find out how she felt those 5 years in Hollywood, but apparently she stayed away and kept a low profile.

Day 24, a very productive one:

156. Two Yanks in Trinidad (1942, Gregory Ratoff) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Pat O'Brien & Brian Donlevy are two mob pals that start fighting and ends up enlisting to continue the bickering. Had its moments. Certainly has enough laughs, though, the plot goes a little all over the place for Two Yanks in Trinidad (1942) to be anything must-see.

157. Somewhere in Camp (1942, John E. Blakeley) - 3/10
--- I liked its follow-up Somewhere on Leave (1943) a lot more. It included more skits that had me laughing. While there were a couple of good ones here too, there simply isn't any thread to the rest of it. To out it simply. It's a mess.

158. Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch (1942, Ralph Murphy) - 5/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Having seen both the silent 1919 version and the first sound version from 1934 of this play, I found that this adaptation of Mrs. Wiggs of the Cabbage Patch (1942) the best of the bunch. It's a story which doesn't really general much steam, and the same is true with the '42 version, but there were more sentimental bits i liked.

159. Canal Zone (1942, Lew Landers) - 4/10
--- There have been many aerial film, so coming to Canal Zone (1942), the formula does feel a little tired. Not to blame of the actors, for they make the experience bearable. All about instructor Chester Morris breaking down cocky operator John Hubbard. So depending on how much you can stand discipline, so does your enjoyment of this Colombia programmer.

160. The Spirit of Stanford (1942, Charles Barton) - 3/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Got a abysmal rating on IMDB, but that's more down to people not liking Stanford than people having seen the film. At the same time it's hard to argue against the score given. The story of American Footballer Frankie Albert, focusing on his college years, with the guy acting as himself for his first and only movie. Heavily padded with sports clips and other actors, barely anyone notable, with the exception of a early uncredited role for Lloyd Bridges. So needless to say it was a cheap cash-in on the team winning the Rose Bowl.

161. Moonlight Masquerade (1942, John H. Auer) - 4/10
--- Absolutely had some lovely bits, but overall a it's a highly standard rom-com which in my eyes didn't manage to break-out of it's mold regardless of the actors efforts.

162. Queen of Broadway (1942, Sam Newfield) - 4/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- I wasn't expecting much as it's a PRC production, but this was fine for a low budgeter. A kid loses his mother and a gambling queen and a football team boss work together to adopt him. Rochelle Hudson & Buster Crabbe did well with what they had to work with and there were enough screwy people to keep things entertaining otherwise. Pure B-picture material, though.

163. Almost Married (1942, Charles Lamont) - 4/10
--- Horse doctor and father-in-law Eugene Pallette saved this pretend marriage from sinking. Okay, it was cute sometimes, but the plot is a little too forced for it to work.

164. Med dej i mina armar [With You in My Arms] (1940, Hasse Ekman) - 3/10
--- Featherly light amnesia romance. Dime-a-dozen Scandinavian production, the type I've never been much of a fan of.

165. Busses Roar (1942, D. Ross Lederman) - 4/10
--- Speed '42..... almost. There's a bomb on the buss and the breaks wasn't working. Too bad it didn't have the cool leads the 1994 "remake" had.

166. Border Roundup (1942, Sam Newfield) - 3/10
--- Basic poverty row western in the Lone Rider series. Not much of a fan of George Houston, but he had Al St. John as his sidekick, so it evens out. The rest was the usual straight-forward production Sam Newfield was known for. Hardly impressive work, but it did the trick for those longing for a quick and easy western fix.

167. Rolling Down the Great Divide (1942, Sam Newfield) - 2/10 - FIRST CHECK!
--- Cheap Sam Newfield western starring a guy with a familiar name to at least a couple of other known actors, Bill Boyd, with the nickname "Cowboy Rambler". He did 6 westerns for PRC in 1942 and that was it. However he was a fairly successful recording before and after his brief and unsuccessful stint in Hollywood. As a actor he was dull. Even the songs provided here were dull. And that sums up the experience Rolling Down the Great Divide (1942) provided.

Cutting very suddenly between his childhood and adult years, this western does not give much sense of the protagonist's transformation, but his brutality as a trained killer is certainly unnerving and with lots of blood and gore, the film assembles some indelible images. The overall visual style of the film is a bit of a mixed blessing though with lots of shaky camerawork and unusual, unsteady zooms that feel gritty but which are also distracting.

98. A Strange Adventure (1956)
Yet another super obscure noir that got a blu-ray release before much more well-known ones. It's ok, playing out kinda like Key Largo in the snow.

Image
99. The Mansion of Madness (1973)
I had quite a bit of fun with this oddball flick from the director of the excellent vampire film Alucarda. There's a lot of skill behind the camera and the 'inmates taking over the asylum' plot (based on a Poe story) is usually an entertaining one.

Image
100. Luz (2018)
The experience of watching Luz is somehow both aesthetically rewarding and frustrating in equal measure. The sound design seems purposefully mixed to unsettle and confuse while the visuals are very sparse but creative in how it implements its ideas. The problem is that little actually happens here. It has a couple of very effective scenes but just doesn't add up to a satisfying whole.

Image
101. An Act of Murder (1948)
Euthenasia noir... Way too stilted and preachy

Image
102. Santo en el museo de cera a.k.a. Santo in the Wax Museum (1963)
Another Santo romp through wrestling and mad science. In this one, a crazy doctor is creating an army of monsters from wax exhibits. Naturally the only way to take them down is with a well-placed clothesline followed by some hearty grappling for good measure. Honestly, this one felt like a step down from Santo & the Vampire Women although the mad doctor did get in some delightful insane cackling.

Image
103. Butt Boy (2019)
Chief Lazarra: So you're asking me to go off this theory you got about a white married male, who happens to be a father, living in the suburbs of critica county, who also happens to be your AA sponsor, which I might add, has been secretly running around, cramming objects, animals, and children up his asshole. Then he somehow digest them and he does this in sprees almost in a serial killer fashion. Is that about it?

Detective Russel Fox: Uh huh. Well I'm not entirely sure about the whole uh, digestive system part, but yeah. And it seems the more objects this guy is putting up his ass, uhh... the stronger he's getting. That's my theory, anyway.

Well, hm. I ended up actually liking this one quite a bit. Butt Boy is a neon-drenched Nicolas Winding Refn-style neo-noir by way of Tim & Eric gross out humor. The fact that it almost completely plays it's ridiculous premise straight is probably the only reason it succeeds as much as it does. It felt a little padded in places, and I think it would've played better with more ambiguity as to what's going on, but it was still much better than a movie with this premise has any right to be with solid acting and some very good cinematography despite what I assume is an incredibly low budget.
