101. The Poughkeepsie Tapes (2007) - John Erick Dowdle

Low budget documentary-style serial killer movie that follows a predictable pattern. After some of the other disturbing entries I have seen this month, this one seemed relatively tame in comparison. I think even if you have seen any of the Saw movies this would not rate as particularly scary or disturbing in comparison.

Past viewings

1. Verónica (Paco Plaza - 2017) 4.5/10
If this is "the scariest movie on Netflix" (or, as some paid professional critics would claim, "the sCaRiEsT MoVie oF aLl tImE") then it says more about Netflix than anything else. This is an utterly generic mainstream horror, with one-dimensional characters and a flat story. If you're going to go this route, your only saving grace is to direct an incredibly scary experience, and Veronica is...sometimes scary. But mostly just overwrought. Paco Plaza made a horror classic with [Rec], but here he overcompensates for being out of found footage territory, overdoing the visual style (particularly match edits) and undercooking the script. [also, I just remembered that Under the Shadow is on Netflix, and I don't know who thinks this is scarier than that]

2. The Endless (Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead - 2017) 8/10
It is hard to say what is so good about this film without spoiling the fun; better to say nothing more than it is about two brothers who decide to visit a cult they left 10 years ago. If you think you know where that's going just from reading that, you're probably wrong. A very smart, eerie and unsettling indie film, comparable in quality to similar films I can't name because spoilers.

3. Get Duked! [aka Boyz in the Wood] (Ninian Doff - 2019) 8.5/10
The horror tag on this one is a bit questionable (as comedy/horror films go, it's mostly just comedy), but it will be hard to find a more entertaining, or funnier film during this challenge. The unusual blend of gorgeous (and gorgeously photographed) Scottish highlands, stoner antics, fantastic visual gags and an excellent hip-hop soundtrack combine to make an instant comedy classic, featuring scene-stealing turns from Katie Dickie and James Cosmo. I'm a big, big fan of this one.

13. Scream (Wes Craven - 1996) 6.5/10
Yes, I know - it's 2020 and I had never seen Scream before. Well, now I have. It's an entertaining film, just unpredictable enough to stay interesting despite its tendency for self-congratulation and wink-wink meta cleverness.

14. Yella (Christian Petzold - 2007) 8.5/10
Another film for which the IMDb horror tag might be misplaced, but in their defense, this is an utterly unclassifiable film (and it is a remake of sorts of a horror cult classic). A strange and unpredictable film I'm having trouble getting out of my head--a blend of eeriness, corporate con artistry, and commentary on East/West German reunification politics. I think this deserves repeat viewings.

18. La casa lobo (Joaquín Cociña and Cristóbal León - 2018) 8.5/10
An astoundingly creative DIY stop motion animated film, seamlessly blending both 2D and 3D animation in a surreal dark fairy tale inspired equally by the Brothers Grimm and the political horrors of Chile's past (particularly the horrors of the 'Colonia Dignidad'). Seeing the finished work, it isn't surprising at all that the filmmakers took five years animating this 70-minute film. Required viewing for Lynch and Svankmajer fans.

19. Jeepers Creepers (Victor Salva - 2001) 1/10
Fuck this fucking stupid ass fucking stupid stupid stupid movie. It's one of the 10 worst movies I've ever seen.

20. Zodiac [re-watch] (David Fincher - 2007) 9.5/10
Fincher and screenwriter James Vanderbilt create an incredibly vivid sense of time and place and period detail, that sounds lived-in rather than force-fed (i.e. an overabundance of hippies or references to significant political events unconnected to the story). The film is so understated that when the horror does come, it's especially unsettling and haunting, like the echoing screech of car tires in the parking lot in this film's obvious inspiration, All the President's Men. It's still David Fincher's best film, as eerie a tribute to the "unknowable" and its effect on us as Picnic at Hanging Rock.

21. Kandisha (Jérôme Cohen-Olivar - 2008) 5/10
A supernatural legal horror/thriller in the vein of Exorcism of Emily Rose but with a distinctly Moroccan twist, Kandisha see-saws between "impressive" and "amateur" in this tale of a grieving feminist lawyer who takes the case of a woman (Hiam Abbass!) accused of beheading her abusive husband. The woman says it wasn't her, it was the spirit of Kandisha, who avenges wronged women. Hiam Abbass isn't the only surprising actor to pop up here, as the film also features Said Taighmaoui and, most surprisingly, the late David Carradine in one of his final roles (he's great). The film's creepy factor is, for the most part, impressively understated, but the film scares away whatever goodwill in might have earned with a completely nonsensical final act.

22. Idyll [aka Killbillies] (Tomaz Gorkic - 2015) 5.5/10
Killbillies is a weirdly silly and goofy title chosen by American distributors (the film's original title is Idyll), especially for this dark, grim, and nasty horror film. A woman reluctantly tags along for a model photography shoot in the Slovenian countryside when the crew is abducted by mutant hillbillies for evil purposes. It is effective at what it does, and it utilizes the gorgeous, mountainous Slovenian landscape to its advantage, but the ending and its thin attempt at social commentary only shoots itself in the foot. This Just Before Dawn knockoff is no Just Before Dawn.

23. November (Rainer Sarnet - 2017) 9/10
An incredible, unique, engrossing and moving experience. As not just my first Estonian film but my first Baltic State film, I couldn't have done better. I will say as little else as possible, except to warn that, once again, the IMDb/ICM/Google "Horror" tag is misleading.

24. As Above, So Below (John Erick Dowdle - 2014) 7/10
Location, location, location. Get past all the wannabe National Treasure bullshit in the film's setup, and you arrive at a pure and truly horrific vision of hell summoned from the filmmakers' most morbid nightmares (once the film finally gets to - and below - the Paris Catacombs). It doesn't have the best writing, or the most likeable cast, and the found footage aspect doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but this film is genuinely scary. That's impressive.

28. Ganga & Hess (Bill Gunn - 1973) 5/10
A film that is maybe more unique and interesting than it actually is "good." It has a tendency to spell out its themes for you in the character's dialogue, like Gunn wrote an essay in advance analyzing his own film and had the characters read it. But between the philosophical monologues it shows flashes of real cinema, and when Marlene Clark shows up in the second half she brings the film to life a little.

29. And Soon the Darkness (Robert Fuest - 1970) 6/10
Two English girls on a cycling holiday in rural France become separated, setting one on a quest to find her missing friend and unsure who to trust in this paranoid thriller. It's beautifully shot throughout, and Fuest is no slouch when it comes to suspense and ambiguity. The language barrier is also cleverly used to heighten our lack of trust. It just goes on too long, repeating the same basic idea over and over. Is this character evil or misunderstood? Rinse and repeat. There's a great satire in here about gender socialization and general predatory male behavior, but I'm not sure the film is aware of it. Instead it comes across as more of a patronizing cautionary tale about traveling alone, being too free spirited and showing too much skin.

30. A Perfect Getaway (David Twohy - 2009) 7.5/10
Location is once again everything, as the incredible Hawaiian countryside - combined with a smart, tight script and a great cast - elevate this thriller about a couple of dorks on their honeymoon (Milla Jovovich and Steve Zahn) who begin to suspect their new friends (Justified's Timothy Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez) might be the murderous psychopaths on the news. This is an absurdly entertaining film.

31. Cam (Daniel Goldhaber - 2018) 7.5/10
Further proof you should ignore IMDb ratings of horror movies completely, this is one of the best horror films of the past few years, a nightmarish twist on the doppelganger story where a cam girl wakes up to find herself locked out of her account and someone who looks exactly like her on her stream instead. The film is already scary before the "scary" stuff comes in. The shocking lengths she goes to get more views and donations from a sick, uncaring audience reminded me of They Shoot Horses, Don't They, or Cheap Thrills--stories where the 'have-nots' have to brutally compete against one another for the entertainment of the 'haves' for scraps from their table. Once the doppelganger angle kicks in, first time writer/director Goldhaber smartly avoids the annoying cliches you'd expect: he reveals quickly that the protagonist isn't crazy (there's no "split personality" gotcha angle), avoids over-explaining the threat she faces, and leaves out jumpscares entirely. Demonstrating a knack for subtle dread, he's a genuine talent and a name to watch.

32. The Untamed [La región salvaje] (Amat Escalante - 2016) 8.5/10
Cannes favorite Escalante expertly crafts a compelling, eerie, and haunting art-horror about human sexuality and relationships. Concerning a wife and husband in a troubled relationship as well as the wife's brother and his obsessed friend, all of whom become connected to a mysterious being in the forest who is either their salvation or destruction (the less I say, the better). The cinematography and music are outstanding.

33. Get the Hell Out (Wang I-Fan - 2020) 7/10
Taiwan's parliament becomes overrun by the living dead in this extremely silly zombie comedy with a heavy dose of martial arts, action, and internet memes. Get the Hell Out dives so deep into ridiculousness it becomes hard to resist. At one point a fight becomes overlaid with SNES-style RPG text boxes. The fair criticism can be made that it is far too broad to be effective as a political satire, but it is still very, very fun.

My final 2! The second is a film I've been planning to end a horror challenge with for at least 10 years. Unfortunately I'm a little too tired to do proper reviews for either of them, even if they deserve it.

Also, together, they make an (accidental) "ominous garbage truck" double-feature.

34. Rabid (David Cronenberg - 1977) 8.5/10
34-year-old Cronenberg, with his fourth feature, had already developed his idiosyncratic style - featuring his obsession with body horror, Freudian psychology, and conflations of sex and violence - with the confident zombie horror Rabid. It has a fantastic sense of escalating chaos on a large scale, the same quality I loved in Romero's The Crazies. Marilyn Chambers, more known for her pornographic roles, is very good as the predatory host of the virus, and it's a shame she never achieved the mainstream career she wanted.




35. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Philip Kaufman - 1978) 9/10
Tapping into the post-Watergate paranoia craze and possibly anticipating the cultural changes of the 1980s, Body Snatchers is an even more nightmarish and apocalyptic vision than the 1956 original (and the film gets co-signed through awesome cameos by both Don Siegel and Kevin McCarthy). An exhaustingly oppressive and overwhelming thriller with one of the most memorable horror movie endings I've ever seen.

271-279. The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020) E1-9
My wife and I have been watching this over the last couple of weeks. I would say in general I echo the sentiments of others that this isn't as good as the Haunting of Hill House, but it still has some great moments, particularly in the middle of the series from about episode 4 to 6. In general, once it shows its hand, then it's just a matter of watching it play out pretty predictably. Despite the somewhat lackluster ending, Mike Flanagan once again shows how much talent he has behind the camera. It's filmed with a certain warmth and grace that few other directors could pull off with such a narrative. From an acting standpoint, it's across the board mostly quite good (although Henry Thomas' British impersonation is a little weird). Overall, I was still glad to have watched it and thought it was overall very well done.

Don't Go Near The Water!

Sharks aren’t the only danger the ocean brings. You can be infected with some kind of disgusting waterborne virus, eaten by vicious crocodiles or stranded out in the middle of the ocean with no food and skeletons in your closet. No matter how you look at it, a staycation is starting to sound pretty good.
The Beach House will sneak up on you. Something isn’t right with the ocean water. But a young couple who goes to a beach house for the weekend isn’t aware of it. Neither is the older couple, friends of the family, who show up to the beach house unaware the others were going to be there. Just FYI for those who are squeamish about grotesque flesh mush, there are a couple of scenes here that will get you cringing. One in particular involving a knife and tongs is going to stick with you. While the basic plot here is similar to Cabin Fever, the execution is vastly different. The Beach House plays up the raw terror and otherworldliness of what’s happening, leaving the audience as dazed and unsettled as the characters in the film. Not recommended for people who need every little detail spelled out but otherwise, it was a really good one.
Crocodile is a bunch of gory nonsense for the most part. You know how these movies work. It’s basically a Jaws ripoff about a giant crocodile that swam out of the ocean upriver, preying on unsuspecting villagers. I will say it’s probably bloodier than Jaws although the effects are generally pretty bad. Also PETA fans be warned. A real crocodile was killed on film here.
I had a good time with Harpoon. A smart, funny script mixed with shitty characters that are still somehow entertaining to watch despite the increasingly morbid desperate situations they find themselves in… It’s a hard balancing act to pull off but these three actors manage it with aplomb. I honestly don’t normally care for these kind of “slowing watching people die” kind of movies, but Harpoon manages to not only make it watchable but even fun.

A Howling Sequel Double Feature

283. Howling IV: The Original Nightmare (1988)

For no particular reason other than they’ve been sitting unwatched in my movie stack for a long time, I decided to take in a couple of Howling sequels. The Howling was a great, very influential werewolf movie that seemed to spawn a barrage of trashy, dumb but occasionally fun sequels that rarely seemed to try to capture the spirit of the first one at all.
Howling IV is the rare outlier that actually tries to be more of a straightforward werewolf movie that seems to almost be a remake of the original with some changes. I’ve seen a couple of comments that this is actually a more faithful adaptation of the books in some ways. Honestly though if this is more faithful to the books, I’m glad Dante took it in the direction he did. This movie is incredibly dull and exposition heavy with very little actual werewolf business. The way it was shot also makes it look like a low budget TV movie, drained of all life. Part 2 was stupid but ridiculous and Part 3 was even more stupid and even more ridiculous. But neither 2 nor 3 were boring. This one is just boring.
Howling V on the other hand is a nice little “And Then There Were None”-style mystery with a werewolf shoehorned in, not unlike The Beast Must Die. It had its share of stodgy scenes too but in general was better paced with some nice atmosphere courtesy of the Hungarian castle it takes place in. This one was actually worth watching.

285. Ghost Stories a.k.a. Charles Dickens' Ghost Stories From The Pickwick Papers (1987)
Oh shit. This was legit creepy. I quite liked this adaptation of several of Dickens’ ghostly horror stories. In fact, one of the stories I actually had on a VHS when I was a kid and must’ve watched it over a dozen times but had no idea what it was from until now. Specifically I’m referring to the 4th segment about a bitter, drunken grave digger who is tormented by Death and dragged into Hell on Christmas Eve. It’s a sort of dry run for A Christmas Carol, similar to the Ghost of Christmas Future but even more creepy and weird. The animation in this special is a little on the cheap side with some low frame counts in places which is a shame because the actual artwork is actually very good at times. This actually crept out my kids quite a bit to the point my son left the room while it was on (I mean, it’s not terrifying but things can get pretty damn scary when you are a seven year old).

I picked this one up a couple of days ago, and I can't wait to watch it! One of my favourite finds of the year, easily, and it's great to know it's got some good creep factor (for kids at least) - thanks for the review!

39. Friday the 13th Part 6: Jason Lives (1986) - Slasher films get old fast but Jason Lives is actually one of the best reviewed of the Friday the 13th films. It has a strong comedic element and a lot of meta-references. It was much more entertaining than the sequels before it.

40. Twice Told Tales (1963) - Three stories, all starring the amazing Vincent Price. The stories themselves are all Nathaniel Hawthorne tales. I really was not blown away by the sets or effects. It really is an actor's movie even though they have an over the top melodramatic style. In this day and age, it's probably not going to impress too many people but I have a softspot for anything with Price in it.

41. Supernatural Season 15 Episode 17 (2020) - The show is trying to build towards the final episode but I just can't seem to generate enthusiasm for it.

Bonus Challenage 5 Theme: The Name Game Horror Fest.

Max and I finished up the month with a five movie festival. We chose five films where each film had an actor who shares a first name with one of our family members (3 fur babies included). We chose --

The Howling featuring Dee Wallace for our Great Pyrenees, Sweet Dee Reynolds. We watched Talisman featuring Walter Jones for our Boston Terrier/Beagle, Walter White. Scream 4 featuring Rory Caulkin was for our cat, Roary Gilmore. Then Paranormal featuring Alisha Boe and Dark House featuring Max Gail were for the actual humans in our household. Everything expect Scream 4 was blah or worse and sadly neither Alisha Boe nor Max Gail were very visible in the films where they were listed as actors. So--a bit of a bust as far as film festivals go. That will teach me to stray from lists. I even rated one the lowest I've rated anything yet. Paranormal Activity 4 was the most boring, nonsensical story ever committed to film. I'm quite sure of it. I spoke too soon last night when I listed my 3 least favorites as Paranormal 4 knocked Jack Frost from the list by a pretty wide margin. And I hated Jack Frost.

However, it was not a complete loss for a day. Thankfully I thought of adding a drinking component where we had to drink every time one of the featured actors had a line of dialogue. I was happily buzzed before the really boring movies even started because we began with Scream 4 and, let's just say, Rory Caulkin had a lot of dialogue. Who knew?

So this would be 208 for me as a final total and since my goal was 75, I am both proud and ashamed of myself this month. Ashamed because very little work has been accomplished in the past two weeks. But now the fun is over and tomorrow I adult again. But tonight I finish my candy. Cheers!

Famke Janssen stars as a woman who murdered her abusive husband and now his spirit continues to attack her. This was a weird experience because it plays like a rip-off of this year’s Invisible Man. The husband even interacts with liquid in a similar way. Overall, this shows the imagination that went into this year’s film and how much an actor the caliber of Elisabeth Moss can elevate the material. The ghost here does make a couple of frightening appearances and there’s a cool mirage effect to his look.

Some nice offbeat set details and Brad Dourif giving his usual 100%, but the script makes very little sense. Focused more on Dourif has a human flamethrower.

130. Death Takes a Holiday (1934)

Bringing my month in for a landing is this kind of sweet ghost story about Death. Except for the great character actor Henry Travers, I cared little about the family, but Frederic March is incredible as Death in human form. His curiosity and innocence are warped by the darkness of what he represents, responding to everyone without being able to forget introductions to him usually only come at the end of life. The ending is unusual, and also a bit abrupt.

That was my Halloween night marathon. I think the theme is a little obvious. Really interesting series though. I think Bride of Chucky is my favorite comedy of the series, but I really like the Curse of Chucky return to its creepy roots. I guess I'll catch Cult of Chucky and the Child's Play 2019 remake at some other later point.

A badass searches the streets of Detroit for a serial killer that returned from the dead to continue his cannibalistic carnage. Most of the film is spent just watching a guy wander around with a giant cross made of sticks while staring at buildings and graffiti - if that's what you're looking for in a film, by all means have at it!

Forget that this has to be the lamest insertion ever of 'dead' into a title, forget that they used the wrong goddamn accent in crème, but what the hell does this title even mean? Three people in a polyamorous relationship go to an island right when there's a zombie outbreak and, unfortunately, they're not killed right at the outset. Most of the film consists of excruciating monologues and dialogues about relationships filmed in near darkness, zombies aren't really even mentioned until halfway through and there's zero action until about ten minutes before the end. Needless to say, this is not the crëme de la crĕme of zombie threesome romances.

85. Little Dead Rotting Hood (2016) 4/10

Wolves are prowling the woods of a small town, but when a posse heads out to investigate, it gets more than it bargained for. No spoiler here - it's in the title and on the DVD cover - zombie Red Riding Hood shows up with wolverine claws and goes all Red Dead Redemption on their asses. And yet, despite such a solid premise, it somehow ends on a dull note.

86. Death-Scort Service (2015) 2.5/10

A sociopath with a hunter's cap is stalking prostitutes, killing them and cutting off body parts to build something or other, I don't care. Tremendous amounts of gratuitous nudity and misogynistic sexual violence, so probably not a date movie. Or a movie for anyone else, for that matter.

87. Deatherman (2015) 2/10

An awkward, misogynistic TV meteorologist is attracted to the young, who reciprocates in her own tender way by butchering him on her living room floor and burying him in the woods. Well, as you know, weathermen never stay buried forever, so he returns from the grave to exact his gory revenge. In the immortal words of Bob Dylan, you don't need a deatherman to know which way the shit flows. And boy, it overflowed the toilet and it's all over the floor with this one. Avoid.

Bonus Challenage 5 Theme: The Name Game Horror Fest.

Max and I finished up the month with a five movie festival. We chose five films where each film had an actor who shares a first name with one of our family members (3 fur babies included). We chose --

The Howling featuring Dee Wallace for our Great Pyrenees, Sweet Dee Reynolds. We watched Talisman featuring Walter Jones for our Boston Terrier/Beagle, Walter White. Scream 4 featuring Rory Caulkin was for our cat, Roary Gilmore. Then Paranormal featuring Alisha Boe and Dark House featuring Max Gail were for the actual humans in our household. Everything expect Scream 4 was blah or worse and sadly neither Alisha Boe nor Max Gail were very visible in the films where they were listed as actors. So--a bit of a bust as far as film festivals go. That will teach me to stray from lists. I even rated one the lowest I've rated anything yet. Paranormal Activity 4 was the most boring, nonsensical story ever committed to film. I'm quite sure of it. I spoke too soon last night when I listed my 3 least favorites as Paranormal 4 knocked Jack Frost from the list by a pretty wide margin. And I hated Jack Frost.

However, it was not a complete loss for a day. Thankfully I thought of adding a drinking component where we had to drink every time one of the featured actors had a line of dialogue. I was happily buzzed before the really boring movies even started because we began with Scream 4 and, let's just say, Rory Caulkin had a lot of dialogue. Who knew?

So this would be 208 for me as a final total and since my goal was 75, I am both proud and ashamed of myself this month. Ashamed because very little work has been accomplished in the past two weeks. But now the fun is over and tomorrow I adult again. But tonight I finish my candy. Cheers!

The horror, both in terms of suspense, action and effects are done very well, but the script has deep problems, with a lot of failed attempts at comedy, a deep-seated misogynist undercurrent and even the sympathetic characters being very annoying. The "nice guy" hapless hero who patronises his girlfriend yet is completely useless is the most extreme case.

jim cummings hee actor & jim cummings the writer sure made it hard for jim cummings the director to put together a nything approaching mediocrity here. tone feels off. somehow. forster is underutilized. film hasn't a clue how to stick the landing in large part bc it doesn't know what it is or wishes to be. not at tan y point did i get the notion that cummings had a firm grasp on what he was trying to do with this film.

I would be very interested to hear why you liked this one as much as you did. It has been a few years since I watched this, but I thought it was well made but ultimately empty and focused too much on action over atmosphere.

Here are my final thoughts on the films I have watched so far at Abertoir Film festival. There are a few more films I am yet to watch today that have sadly missed the cut-off for the October challenge.

52. Relic (2020) 7/10 Three generations of a family are deeply affected by the onset of dementia in their matriarch, Edna (Robyn Nevin), when she goes missing from her home where she resides alone. Edna's daughter, Kay (Emily Mortimer), and Granddaughter, Sam (Bella Heathcote), return to the family home to discover that a sinister presence has taken hold of Edna and here they are forced to confront their deepest fears.

Much is left unexplained in Relic, yet this adds to the mystery and allows us to draw our own conclusions on the bizarre circumstances that plague the affected family. A foreboding soundtrack hints at the pervading sense of dread that looms over the horizon, as its creepy and subdued tones enhance an overwhelmingly ominous atmosphere. This is a superb Australian horror that set the bar very high for the unfortunate films that followed it at Abertoir festival.

53. The Curse of Audrey Earnshaw (2020) 5/10 - An atmospheric and at times enchanting period horror that looks beautiful yet its inclusion of a protagonist with questionable motives and a threadbare storyline about witchcraft that hold it back from being anything other than merely watchable.

54. The Reckoning (2020) 5/10 - There was a time where I would eagerly watch every new Neil Marshall film thanks to his incredible work on The Descent and Dog Soldiers. Sadly, this time has now passed, with his latest effort indicating that he has lost his edge. It's a self-indulgent witch hunter film that is clearly a vehicle for his partner's career who takes on the starring role.

55. Detention (2019) 4/10 - A Taiwanese horror that tackles too many genres, with a meandering storyline that tackles political strife in the country and a romantic subplot that take away from the elements of horror.

56. Kriya (2020) 4/10 - An intriguing Indian horror though one that is driven by some very questionable decisions by the lead character. Great location and interesting take on the practices of a culture I am not too familiar with but little else of note.

57. Bleed With Me (2020) 5/10 - Subdued take on the familiar storyline of a woman questioning her sanity. Is her best friend stealing her blood whilst she is sleeping or is it all in her mind? There's a nice dynamic between the small cast though it never really takes off.

58. Who Saw her Die? (1972) 5/10 - An underwhelming outing from Aldo Lado that pales in comparison to Last Stop on the Night Train and Short Night of Glass Dolls. However, it was followed by a Q&A with Lado himself that was very insightful.

A break from the Abertoir lineup:

59. Death of a Vlogger (2019) 7/10 - A refreshingly original spin on the found footage/mockumentary style of horror that we have been inundated with over the past few years. Look out for a particularly creepy 360 degree vision of a seance as the camera spins between the participants.

60. Shakespeare's Shitstorm (2020) 6/10 - The latest Troma outing is utterly bonkers in the best way possible. Prepare for the usual onslaught of shit, vomit and all kinds of bodily fluid as we see an insane reimagining of The Tempest.

61. Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist (2019) 7/10 - A fascinating documentary that is comprised of the best parts of a 6 day interview the film-maker conducted with Friedkin. This was a remarkably insightful and revealing account that any fans of The Exorcist or Friedkin will likely adore.

62. Historia de lo Oculto (2020) 4/10 - An Argentinian love letter to UK horror such as Ghostwatch - as proclaimed by the Director himself during the introduction. However, this missed the mark, for a film inspired by Ghostwatch it was far from scary.

63. Anything For Jackson (2020) 7/10 - I came very close to hitting the favourite with this superb Satanic horror about an elderly couple who kidnap a pregnant lady and perform a ritual to try and bring their dead grandson back to life. Incredibly original, creepy in parts and a total surprise that this comes from a Director who on IMDB has countless credits for made for TV Christmas movies and then this single horror gem has appeared in his filmography from out of nowhere. I hope he leaves Christmas behind and becomes a prolific horror director instead.

A break from the Abertoir Lineup:

64. His House (2020) 5/10 - A British ghost story that focuses on an African couple who come to the country as Asylum seekers. This makes for an interesting backstory to the characters and brings a different perspective than we are used to seeing but these are really the only memorable aspects of the film.

65. The Cemetery of Lost Souls (2020) 5/10 - This features two overlapping storylines about a haunted Brazilian cemetery whose ghoulish inhabitants try to claim the souls of those who stumble upon it in the past and the present. It has a creepy atmosphere and some nice gory effects that make it a fun midnight movie but the story lacks any real bite.

That is it for me, happy that I got to watch 65 horrors although I am also sad that I only encountered 1 new favourite, the excellent Rent-a-pal which should hopefully be on everyone's watchlist now - if it isn't then add it right away! ShakespearsShitStorm and Leap of Faith were both on at MonsterFest but I skipped both... Not a big fan of Shakespeare, Troma, or The Exorcist though.

I'm not a huge Troma fan either, I always enjoy their films but never enough to make me want to seek out more. Shakespeare's Shitstorm did feel a lot wilder than what I am used to with Troma and I had a lot of fun with it - you don't have to be overly familiar with Shakespeare's work anyway as the Bard himself appears early on to explain things.

Leap of Faith was a brilliant surprise. I was feeling exhausted after lots of late nights watching horror so went to bed mid afternoon to recharge my batteries and put Leap of Faith on in the background with the intention of dozing off. Instead, I was transfixed throughout and stayed awake for it all.

Did you get to see Psycho Goreman in the end? That was a film that peaked my curiosity, I missed it when it played in the UK sadly but it looked like something I would love.
