Key: (IMDb rating / icheck rating / my rating) 7.3 is above average on IMDb, 4% is above average for icheck, and 7 (out of 10) is above average for me.

Oct. 30. Extra Ordinary (2019) 6.4 / 4.4% / 7

Cute and charming Ghostbusters-type Irish indy with a likeable cast. Light horror, light comedy, light romance.

Oct 31. Harpoon (2019) 6.0 / 3.0% / 7

Ending strong this season comes another indy from the Rotten Tomatoes top 100. This belongs to one of my favorite horror sub-genres which I like to call “trapped somewhere retarded.” Examples include "247°F" (a sauna) and "Frozen" (a ski lift) and "127 hours" (rocks). In this case a boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, which sadly isn’t too retarded, but that’s ok. I also enjoy movies like this that have only two or three actors for the entire runtime (like "Tape" or "Bug"), which is pretty much a defining feature of the TSR genre anyway.

Nothing too special: three people arguing about who is fucking whom and who is going to eat whom. Stuff like that.

Alright I might watch one more movie after midnight, but it’s also possible this is my last one. I’ve also added my horror short and TV viewing for the month to the master list, which comes out to 376 minutes.

97. Ils / Them (David Moreau/Xavier Palud, 2006) TSZDT #428

I remember reading up on the "New French Extremity" movement - if it is one - a while back and thinking, I still haven't seen many of these, despite an increased interest in horror the last few years. Given that France and horror will correspond here next year, I suppose I'll mostly wait on them. In any case, this film apparently gets lumped in with the group though there's nothing "extreme" here in any way except perhaps the idea that adolescents are responsible for the horrors we see (and don't see). In any case this follows my viewing of Haute tension last year, and just a few others over the past few years and I have to say that so far, I'm not all that impressed with this new wave in French horror, extremity, or whatever one calls it. I certainly need to see more but just for the moment I'll say that this matches Haute tension in it's color-drained visual ugliness and it's general reliance on jump scares and ramping up tension - trying to generate a feeling of dread continuously - while ignoring things like story and characterization almost completely. Actually this film is worse in that regard - we might as well call these people "teacher-woman" and "writer-man" as that is the extent of what we ever learn about this couple of French people in Romania and living in an absolutely ENORMOUS old house who hear spooky sounds one night which quickly escalate into them trying to escape several unseen terrorizers, both in the labyrinthine house and the even more labyrinthine sewers underneath. The nature of the setting was the saving grace for me - I love films set in ginormous houses/buildings, love labyrinths, and for once the handheld camerawork and low-fi aesthetics of the filmmaking (apart from the color as I mentioned) worked to the film's advantage. Still at the end the best I can say is "OK" because 75 minutes of one mood and one feeling, with nothing else present, just isn't enough for me.

98. Rituals (Peter Carter, 1977) TSZDT #647

I guess this is the Canadian Deliverance. Five middle-aged doctors go out in the wilderness on a fishing trip and bad things start to happen right away - first their boots get stolen in the night, and four of the five were too stupid to bring second pairs, then when the one guy who knows anything leaves them to potentially get help, all hell really breaks loose. The mentions of what the Indians used to call the place and an early sight of something that could be a tribal warning - and the title of the film - made me, and I'm sure a lot of folks, think that this is a set-up for a native attack getting back at the white man, but there are also signs that this might be a red herring, and that maybe it's one of the group - probably the one who left - behind it all. When we do find out what's really going on - after all but two of the five are dead - it seems rather silly, but the mood of creepiness and the real feeling of isolation and helplessness is palpable. This was unfortunately a very mediocre to bad copy, and it doesn't look like there's a restoration or pristine print out there, or I might well have liked it more than I did - the photography is probably pretty impressive if seen properly. Anyway not my favorite kind of horror at all but an above-average example, even if the bickering between the group is pretty tiresome in the first act.

99. Theater of Blood (Douglas Hickox, 1973) TSZDT #259

Fun late Vincent Price piece about a hack actor hacking back literally at all the critics who reviewed him poorly and snubbed him for a major award two years previously. He supposedly killed himself but we know better right from the get-go, and overall this is more an amusing display for Price at his hammiest than any kind of serious film, though the first scene is fairly intense actually. It's a little tiresome in it's repetition of murders - they're not all the same or anything, but it seems like roughly 2/3 of the film is just dedicated to Edward Lionheart (ha! Price's character) declaiming Shakespeare and then killing his victims in ways analogous to scenes in the Bard's works. Clever but you really have to love Price - and Diana Rigg as his extremely faithful daughter - for this to work at all. I do, so it does, but it's far from his best work.

100. Pánico en el Transiberiano / Horror Express (Eugenio Martín, 1972) TSZDT #316

Got my Price in, got my Hammer and my Lugosi/Karloff/Chaney Jr and my Universal in earlier, did some Japanese and Italian and French horrors as well as British and American, the only must-watch category left for me was Lee/Cushing

Image

and this one fits that bill, as well as being a predominantly Spanish film - and I've definitely grown to love Spanish horror and it certainly seems to be one of the most significant countries for the genre, going back to the 40s at least and continuing into this decade. Only a few countries match that history. And this ended up being another fine example though it's also quite typical of a lot of European co-productions of the time and as one reviewer mention, harkens back to Quatermass - the monster from outer space and the intrepid scientists who have to stop it. In this case it's a millions-years-old fossil in the keeping of Prof. Sir Alexander Saxton (Lee) which he's transporting by train through - you guessed it, Siberia, circa 1906. While some pains are made to make of this an Orient Express type exotic adventure, neither the location nor train setting really matter all that much to the plot ultimately, except insofar as it keeps characters cramped together. The fossil, of course, ends up not being so dead, and it's up to Lee and his early antagonist but soon friend Dr. Wells (Cushing) to stop it from killing all the passengers and ultimately doing... well, that part isn't too clear, and the ending of the film feels a bit rushed and muddled. But it's colorful, lots of fun and has quite a few great lines such as Cushing - when asked if he or Lee might be the monster (in disguise by this point) - replies sharply "Monster? We're British you know". Telly Savalas is also on hand as a Russian officer, but only late in the film, and he kind of sticks out - though in an absurdity like this that's not necessarily a bad thing; there's also a Rasputin-like monk character who's kind of fun but not really developed in any way like you'd think he would be given the obvious resemblance to the real Mad Monk. The rest of the cast is pretty much Spanish and the whole thing is clearly post-dubbed with the three English-language leads thankfully doing their own voicework.

I’ve also added my horror short and TV viewing for the month to the master list, which comes out to 376 minutes.

for some other "trapped somewhere retarded" movies:
-ATM: in an ATM kiosk
-Stuck: in a car windshield
-Phonebooth: in a phonebooth
-La Cabina: in a phonebooth
-Stalled: in a bathroom
-El Bar: in a diner
-Maximum Overdrive: in a diner
-Buried: in a coffin
-Haze: somewhere not cool
-Trapped in the Closet: in R. Kelly's nightmares

Horror Noire: Films Starring Black Americans
ImageImageImage
261. Rattlesnake (2019)
262. Bad Hair (2020)
263. The Inheritance (2011)
This section was inspired by the documentary produced by Shudder Horror Noire that gives a very good overview of black history in horror films. The doc is recommended whether you like horror movies or not. This bunch of films is a little more of a mixed bag though.
Rattlesnake tells the story of a mother and daughter who get a flat tire in the middle of nowhere on a road trip. While the mother changes the tire, the daughter wanders off and gets bitten by a rattlesnake. With the car tire still flat, she panics and runs her daughter to a lone trailer she spies in the distance where a strange old woman agrees to help her daughter while she rushes back to finish changing the tire. After getting to the hospital, the doctors find no sign of a snake bite, and soon after she is approached by a fellow telling her that a soul must be given in exchange for her daughter or her condition will revert. This one has some nice cinematography and solid acting but the script has some major problems with plot holes that still bugs me thinking about it.
Bad Hair was a really good one. We’ve got another killer hair movie like Wig and Exte, but that’s pretty much where the similarities end. Bad Hair joins other socially conscious films like Get Out and Us to give a satire of the television industry in the late ‘80s and the struggles that black women have to deal with and just how much people perceive their identity via their hair. Yes, the movie is exaggerated in places. It’s a movie about a killer weave for God’s sake (with some very well shot horror sequences that’ll make your skin crawl to boot from director Simien who’s making his first horror film here). The plot is on the predictable side and some of the CG effects aren’t the best but overall I still had fun with this one.
The Inheritance is one I knew pretty much nothing about going in other than it had Keith David who I’ll watch in just about anything. Sadly, he’s about the only reason to watch this one. Large chunks of the film are taken up with soap opera family drama. When it does finally go off the deep end with David as the head of some bizarre ritualistic ancestral cult, it feels too little too late. The hammy acting and cliche dialogue has already done its damage even though David does chew some mad scenery like nobody’s business.

Bite-Sized Nightmarish Nuggets: A Chunk of Anthology Horror
ImageImageImage
264. ABCs of Death 2.5 (2016)
265. My Master Satan (2015)
266. Southbound (2015)
I’ve always gravitated to anthologies. Unlike a full-length film, if a segment sucks, it’s generally over pretty soon before something else comes along. If it’s good, all the better! Of course, most anthologies don’t batting .1000 and these are no exception.
The ABCs of Death series in general I have a decent amount of fun watching just because they are so compact. Almost none of the segments are really great but there are enough decent ones coming at a constant clip that I never get bored with it. With ABCs of Death 2.5, the premise is basically that as part of ABCs of Death 2, the producers sent out an open call for submissions for the letter ‘M’ with the top submission appearing in the film and the best 26 out of the over 500 submitted being compiled into this film ver.2.5. The result is an even more varied and strange collection of shorts than in the two proper films, even including a stop motion one and a puppet show with paper cutouts. In general the productions are a little more on the amateurish side and a couple of them suffer because of that but overall I’d still put in fairly close in quality to the two proper films.
My Master Satan is a REALLY low budget feature from experimental underground director Dakota Ray. It’s comprised of several segments featuring the same two characters who are serial killers that do a bunch of drugs, hallucinate seeing Satan and murder folks. Frankly it sucks. It all sucks. I have nothing good to say about this poorly acted, very poorly mic'd trash heap. I usually give some leeway to lower budget films because of their financial constraints. But this has nothing redeeming about it.
Southbound was actually quite good though and unlike many anthologies that basically throw together a bunch of unrelated short films with a framing story, all the stories here tie together in tenuous ways making it feel more of a whole like Trick or Treat or A Christmas Horror Story from earlier this month. The stories basically flow from one into the next with the first and last story overlapping one another like a purgatorial ouroboros. The segments also have a good variety without feeling completely tonally disruptive for the most part. Overall I was actually pretty impressed with this one and am surprised it doesn’t get more attention.

I Am The Best Version Of You: Malevolent Mirrors
ImageImageImage
267. Amityville: A New Generation (1993)
268. Geoul sokeuro a.k.a. Into The Mirror (2003)
269. Mirrors (2008)
With mirrors you have a lot of potential for horror. Evil doppelgangers, alternate mirror dimensions, ghosts you can see in the mirror that you can’t see behind you… Us recently exploited the mirror to interesting effect, but I thought I’d take a look back at some other movies that have used mirrors as a driver for terror.
Amityville: A New Generation taught me a valuable lesson. Never accept haunted mirrors as payment for a photograph. It will then start showing you terrible future tragedies and lead you into derangement. Honestly I thought this was one of the weaker “possessed things” Amityville sequels although it still had its fun kooky moments as well. Oddly this one seems to want to tie into the original movie a little more than some of the other sequels. Toward the end it definitely intentionally draws parallels with the first one. Anyway, I think this one might be best served as part of a Nutty Amityville marathon nestled in between more crazy iterations of the series.
Into the Mirror is a Korean film that blends horror and crime procedural in a generally fairly effective way. It tells the story of an ex-cop who gets a job as security at a new mall and gets pulled into a series of mysterious deaths involving mirrors. The actual death sequences are pretty effective and well filmed, but I do feel like the movie gets bogged down in exposition and procedural elements that detract from the actual suspense. Still, it’s pretty good overall.
I didn’t realize it when I started it but apparently Mirrors is a kind of pseudo-reimagining of Into The Mirror. It is also about an ex-cop security guard (played by Kiefer Sutherland) at a mall who gets involved in creepy mirror-related murders. Some of the death scenes are also pretty similar. But the overarching plot is much different. Rather than emphasizing the investigative procedural elements, director Alexander Aja puts the focus on the lead’s family and restructures the plot into something more personal to the main character. Overall, I’d place it of a similar quality. While the changes overall do alleviate some of the more exposition-heavy elements I took issue with in Into the Mirror, it still feels too long and drawn out at times and with the shift in plot, I felt like it made the movie a little more predictable too. Decent but not amazing.

KIDDIE KORNER

270. Scooby-Doo! Adventures: The Mystery Map (2013)
Another day, another Doo. This one is done entirely with puppets for reasons unknown and involves the gang getting mixed up with an evil demon parrot trying to steal a treasure map. It is definitely skewed a little younger than the typical Scooby doo series or movie but still manages some mildly amusing jokes and keeps a brisk pace. My kids actually liked this one, so I guess the creators knew what they were doing.

Talk about saving the best till last*. :o This is one of the most fucked-up films that I have seen this month in the best possible way as it explores the dark recesses of human depravity and how uncivilised we can really be towards one another. Perhaps my second favourite first-time viewing in October.

We all go a little mad sometimes.

Generally classified as a horror movie, most of the horror actually does not come from the captured feral woman here but rather the family who attempt to "tame" her. The film explores the idea that forcibly taming someone is more inhumane than letting them roam free, as well as power abuse and toxic relationships in general. There is a lot of dark comedy too as phrases such as "we have no secrets in this family" take new meaning in context.

* Last in October; maybe not last overall if I can stay awake long enough after midnight to fit one more in with the Challenge rules that state the challenge ends at dawn.

38. Vicious Fun (2020) 4/10 (4.4)
Painfully unfunny. Although interesting potential ideas come out in the 2/3rd portions. The lead was unlikable and boring, and thankfully is mentioned as being a creepy. His roommate is completely unnecessary. Ari Millen is charismatic and energetic (giving off Matthew McConnaghey vibes) as Bob Nice and is sorely underused. I feel this would’ve been much more interesting with Carrie as a lead character, as her backstory had a lot to offer, but Joel had nothing. The comedy failed at almost every moment which made it difficult to put up with.

*39. Pitch Black (2000) 10/10 (9.8) up feom 9`.10
Originally this was supposed to be a theme night of mightysparks favourite films with aliens but then someone drank too much :folded: . This was my favourite film for awhile when I was like 9/10 and honestly I can’t find a flaw here. Brilliant use of tension and darkness. There are main characters who are female, Australian, aboriginal, religious, drug addicts, prisoners, transgender, British man who likes tea and alcohol.Nothing is judgmental, these people just are. They’re not totally developed but they don’t need to be. The focus is survival and it’s scary, tense, and real. No stupid romances or sexiness. No sentimentality. It’s beautiful. If there was a flaw, it’s 20 year old cgi has aged a bit. But so much takes place in darkness that it’s hardly an issue. I used to find the odd visuals annoying, but really helps build its alien ness. It’s all so good. Wonderful film and totally deserves its new status as a 10/10 film and Idk why I held off for so long in giving this to it. When I was a kid I thought the creatures looked like kabutops so I used to call that Pokémon ‘the ugly things from pitch black’. This film has been a massive part of my life for 20 years and I can’t imagine it ever not being a part of it. Pinnacle of filmmaking here.

I never thought of Riddick as a main character here and was super disappointed with the sequel and haven’t watched or played anything since the 2004 sequel which I thought sucked. This is the only one for me. But he is selfish, but not in humane. The main character never acts in a way because she is female, but because she is a leader and selfless. Wonderful.

Im really smashed right now so this is as legible as you’re gonna get but so good honestly. Drunk or not, just perfect.
Boo!

59. Dèmoni [Demons] (1985, Lamberto Bava): 8.2 - By far the best new watch this challenge (okay I got a couple more hours and films to go, so maybe one of those will beat it). At one point this movie has a guy fighting zombies demons with a katana on a motorbike in a cinema... - what's not to love?! With its title I expected the movie to include way more supranatural element, which I'm not a big fan of in horror, but basically this is just a zombie movie with people turning into demons, seemingly only just so Bava doesn't have to keep to all the set zombie rules. And zombie movies I do love. I loved how the movie played with how the film in the movie, the characters in this movie are drawn to a mysterious screening of a horror film, resembles and influences(?) what goes on in the movie. By setting the action (mostly) inside a locked off cinema the action (mostly) smartly takes place in one closed-off location, which raises the stakes and tension. I say mostly, cause there is also some time spent on some youthful delinquents outside, but this is plotline goes nowhere. Another little demerit is that near the end the movie goes to rapidly from there being only a handful of demons and a large group of survivors to a lot of demons and only the last four protagonist left. For a large time the movie has a nice extended cast who all get about equal screen time, making unclear who the main protagonists are. Which also establishes a wider world and gives an opportunity to kill of characters who seemed to have movie-immunity, which raises the stakes. All with all it's just a no-pretense highly entertaining movie that also scary and very tenseful, like I said at the start; it has a guy fighting demons with a katana on a motorbike in a cinema... - what's not to love?! Very little.

60. Vamp (1986, Richard Wenk): 5.5 - A movie that totally underutilizes it amusing premise; two guys are asked to hire a stripper to get in a fraternity, so they go to a shady stripclub, only the strippers are really... vampire. The biggest problem is that the movie drains all tension out of the movie by instead having it all take place in that one stripclub, the protagonist constantly goes outside with him only ending up again in danger cause the plot demands him to act stupid. An outside that weirdly enough is totally deserted from other normal people, expect for a gang of albino's, even though the club itself is quite packed with customers. It also makes the mistake off killing of its most fun character way too soon. The comedy is meh and the acting is extremely wooden. Grace Jones, who's the head vampire of the bunch, is severely miscast. With her haute-couture style she just doesn't fit in this type of strip joint or this kind of lowbrow entertainment. For a 80s pulp entertainment featuring strippers there is also surprisingly little nudity. There is still some fun to be had with this typical 80s teenagers plus vampires flick, but it could have been so much better.

61. Night of the Creeps (1986, Fred Dekker): 6.5 - Just like Fright Night this 80s horror is clearly made by a fan of the genre paying hommage to the genre, but also too many other B genre movies of his youth. Leading to a movie that tries to do too much at the same time. And while it does a lot of well, it does none great and neither succeeds it totally in combining all aspect well. All with all it's amusing enough for a fun time. But the tension could have been higher and the comedy funnier. It does have very likable leads and a highly enjoyable Tom Atkins as a though nosed detective.

You may want to refer to this thread with your complaint.
Personally I see the horror elements in the film, although the overall feel is that of action/adventure/comedy. I would put this in the same ballpark as something like Big Trouble in Little China.
Just to be clear, didn't really want to single you out because it's a reaction I could've placed a million times already, but this one seemed particularly odd, because even IMDb (which lists about every whiff of a genre) didn't even care to include horror.

I checked the link, but from the description that just seems to be the "genre" corner of the festival. The name of the section and the other entries might cause a little confusion, but going on the introduction it doesn't look like it's a horror section, but a mini genre festival (like BIFFF, Imagine, ...). Typically these fests also include fantasy and sci-fi films and within that context Detective Dee is a perfect entry. As a horror film though, it makes 0 sense to me.
Correct, the JBD section historically has always been a "genre" section - horror, dark thriller, martial arts, etc. The type of stuff highbrow festivals would turn their nose up at, in other words. :)

A lie ain't a 'side of the story.' It's just a lie.

80. Guru, the Mad Monk (1970) 5/10

Andy Milligan schlocks it up with a paranoid medieval prison warden murdering everyone he feels is threatening him and horning in on one of the prisoners he's sentenced to death. Kind of fun in a low budget sort of way.

Probably just time for a few, but let's try a mini-marathon:

Halloween Film Festival 2020: Uncle Leo's Deathinitive List of Lame (but also Utterly Terrifying) Death Puns

81. The Newlydeads (1988) 4/10

A cross-dresser is stabbed in the head at a seedy motel and comes back to wreak revenge fifteen years later. Yeah, there's the 80s vibe there, but there's a reason this one isn't typically mentioned on the Best of 80s Horror lists. Kind of an incoherent mess without very many bright spots. Pretty good for Troma, though.

82. Tone Death (2017) 6.5/10

A pair of schlubby musicians believe that they've discovered a sound that, in the words of one of them, drills right into the perineum and takes the consciousness to the next level, when all it actually does is make people shit themselves and die. So not far off. Filmed in documentary style, this one's pretty funny, the leads have some charisma and it gets extra points because one actor's name is Harriet Ghost (spooky!). A pleasant surprise.

It's great to see you enthusiastic about something mighty!

Don't remember the movie in question myself - saw it I think around 2004-5, I feel like on VHS but can't be sure. I have it as a 7 which isn't that meaningful, especially given how high a rater I am. Good but nothing special is what that usually means. But I've meant to go back to it at some point and maybe watch at least the first sequel. I kind of like Vin Diesel in a way, he's one of those actors with so little charisma that you can almost imprint your own personality on him if that makes sense (probably not).

19. 3.5* - Get the Hell Out [Tao Chu Li Fa Yuan] by I.-Fan Wang (2020)

Hysterical Taiwanese zombie comedy. They enjoyed a short spell of quality/creative films in the early 10s, sadly it didn't really last. Since then some pretty decent films have surfaced, but they are few and far between. Get the Hell Out isn't a future classic, but at least there's a lot of fun to be had with this one. Parliament is discussing the construction of a chemical plant, when one the members turns into a zombie and starts attacking the other participants. Soon the entire room is teaming with zombies and it's up to a couple of survivors to find a way out of the building. Their quest looks impossible, until one of the survivors discovers his blood repells the undead. Get the Hell Out is a pretty modern, energetic film. The editing is hyperactive, people are loud, the camera swings all over the place and some game interfaces and 8 bit sounds make their way into the styling. There's a little gore, but in the end this is more comedy than horror and giggles are more important than grossing people out. A lot of fun, but no masterpiece.

19. 3.5* - Get the Hell Out [Tao Chu Li Fa Yuan] by I.-Fan Wang (2020)

The camerawork during the fight scenes was pretty great.

The game interface has been done before (Scott Pilgrim for example) but I don't think I've ever seen a feature film use a popular Vine meme before, least of all one related to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. That probably got the loudest laugh out of me.

I kind of like Vin Diesel in a way, he's one of those actors with so little charisma that you can almost imprint your own personality on him if that makes sense (probably not).
this is the only film I've ever liked him in. My brother used to be obsessed with the Fast and the Furious franchise and I had to sit through more than that than I ever wanted, but otherwise hadn't seen him in much.

Convinced that a stone statue is alive and her only friend, a young girl gets up to mischief that she blames on the statue in this Mexican horror film. Lucy Buj is great as the girl and the film gets some decent suspense and thrills out of her doing odd things like suddenly appearing on a dangerous ledge and pouring salt into pentagrams. The majority of the film, however, is spent on other characters discussing her weird mischief. Chilling ending though.

And that's it for me this Challenge. I don't think I can stay awake for much longer. Thanks for hosting, max.

92 films in 31 days. For most Challenges, that would be enough to secure me a win or at least a top 3 position. For this Challenge, it means I'll probably finish 12th, maybe even lower, depending how much everyone else squeezes in before dawn their time. (D:)

Stat-urday Update #5

Welcome to the 2020 Horror Challenge - the scariest challenge of the scariest month of the scariest year. On the 31st morning of the challenge, we near the end of the horror, sitting back and waiting for one last thrill. So far, we have 52 morbid challenge participants who have amassed a total of 3033 points. flavo5000 is out to a dominating lead, with adwest, blueboybob, psychotronicbeatnik, Daviddoes, 1SO, VincentPrice, weirdboy, and OldAle1 rounding out the 100-watch club. Average number of watches at this point is 58.33, which would be good enough for 20th place.

(Thanks to everyone for pointing out errors in stats. Do keep an eye on your stats in the OP so I can correct mistakes.)
maxwelldeux wrote: September 26th, 2020, 5:43 pm Potentially a bold pandemic prediction: The 2020 Horror challenge might be the first to collectively top 3000 points.

And just a fun reminder, only seven challenges have crested 2000 collective points... the last seven horror challenges we've run on this forum.
Just have to point out... Nailed it. The 2020 Horror Challenge is officially the busiest challenge of all time on this forum. Here are the 8 busiest challenges:
Horror 2020: 3033
Horror 2017: 2926
Horror 2015: 2635
Horror 2018: 2602
Horror 2019: 2334
Horror 2016: 2114
Horror 2014: 2106
Horror 2013: 2103

Films watched so far have ranged from 1896-2020. Here's a breakdown by decade:

Bonus Challenges:

BC1 - Kill the Zombies!: My guesstimate at the start of this challenge was that we'd get to 200-250 zombies slain. So far, we have slayed 569 zombies, more than half the list! This includes 7 of the top 10, and 82 of the top 100. Shutter is the zombie version of a dead horse, having been watched 9 times thus far this challenge, followed by Vampires (1998), Creep (2014), Halloween (2018), The Cabin in the Woods (2011), and The Witches (1990)with six watches each. The TSZDT List collectively accounted for 938 of our watches - almost 31%. Full stats can be found here.

124. Mutants (2009)
★ ★
First half had potential with a couple hiding from the zombie apocalypse in an empty hospital. He just got bit and rather than give up, they use the medical supplies to try and slow or stop the infection. (These creatures aren’t true zombies but ‘infected’, which means they’re fast zombies.) This fresh, narrow focus is tossed aside when more survivors show up. The whole film gets dumber, and it turns into a stunt and gore show.

125. Laid to Rest (2009)

Learned I added this after seeing it on a list of Awesome Horror Villains Lost in Unseen Movies. The article emphasized the creative kills and intimidating mask. That’s mostly true, but the characters are dumb and make a lot of dumb choices, mostly because they had a limited number of sets. I took Lena Headey being involved meant this wouldn’t look like it was made on the ultra-cheap. I was wrong.

126. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
★ ★ ★ ★
Annual tradition. Always rewatchable.

127. The Ring (2002)
★ ★ ★
I forgot about the horse on the ferry boat. Wow, what a sequence. I may prefer this to Ringu just on the level of craft.

#BINGO B4
36. Tales of the Uncanny: The Ultimate Survey of the Anthology Film (Gregory, 2020)
Documentary about anthology films. It's what you'd expect: it goes through the history of horror anthologies in chronological order. Most of the talking-head interviews have had to be conducted over Zoom, so the video quality is variable, but it does mean that they've got an impressive roster of experts who had time on their hands during the pandemic.
5/10

#DEATHLIST 9. Death by Animal/Creature - Numerous deaths shown in extracts. Death by creature is the one that seemed to occur repeatedly.

Image

37. Love at First Bite (Dragoti, 1979)
Fitfully amusing vampire comedy. The tone of the humour makes it feel like it's trying to be Young Frankenstein, but the jokes are corny and rely on stereotypes. The acting isn't bad, but they have some very corny material to work with.
4/10

#DECADE 1970s
#BINGO B2 - The first scene is Dracula waking up in his crypt.

Image

38. Fantasy Island (Wadlow, 2020)
Annother high-concept Blumhouse project, reimagining the Fantasy Island TV series as a horror film. It feels like it could have worked, but the script they came up with is bizarre: it changes in tone, piles on a series of twists until the story makes no sense, and is filled with lots of boring stuff that goes nowhere.
3/10

#BINGO D4 - The inhabitants of fantasy island are some variety of magical simulacra, but they keep coming back to life and are described as "black-eyed zombies" by Michael Rooker. Naturally the phones stop working whenever the island wills it.
#DEATHLIST 5. Death by Falling - Watch out for the cliffs on fantasy island!

79. Christine (1983) - Third or fourth viewing. Last saw this about two and a half years ago, at the same drive-in where I saw The Fog this past week. I'm always back and forth between this and Halloween as my favorite by John Carpenter, but I think this viewing finally cemented the plymouth fury as my fave.

80. In Fabric (2018) - From a haunted car to a haunted dress. Very retro in style and tone - or at least one of the more interesting and unique attempts at evoking a long past (in this case, clearly the 70's) style of filmmaking that I've seen in quite some time. Almost reads like a horror-ish Phantom Thread at times, least of all due to the plot centered on dressmaking and fashion in general.

81. Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007) - Pretty much copy and paste what I wrote about Sleepy Hollow here; the Burton/Depp collaboration working at their creative peak and really enriching its source material, rather than adding an unnecessarily garish makeover to an already beloved property (looking at you, Willy Wonka). Probably the last teamup of the two that I really found to be worthwhile, since neither one has been a part of a major project that I've enjoyed since then.

82. Halloween (1978) - This was on at work. Couldn't let this annual staple pass me by, even if it was in passing for a decent chunk of it.

The game interface has been done before (Scott Pilgrim for example) but I don't think I've ever seen a feature film use a popular Vine meme before, least of all one related to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. That probably got the loudest laugh out of me.
Hmmm, not really my scene so I probably missed that Vine reference. I get a feeling we'll be seeing a lot more of those 8/16 bit gaming references in the coming years though. The kids of that era are old enough to make film now.

20. 3.5* - Books of Blood by Brannon Braga (2020)
A new adaptation of Clive Barker's Book of Blood. The film is set up as an anthology project, but the stories loop back into each other and the whole deal is directed by Brannon Braga, so it's not a mishmash of different stories and styles. Somewhat disappointing, but I'm sure most people will prefer this format. There's plenty to choose from, but Braga limited himself to three stories. The first one is about a young girl who runs away from home and ends up with a seemingly nice family, the second one deals with a scientist who learns that there may be life after death, the final one is about two guys looking for the book of blood. The film is relatively light on horror, but it's all quite atmospheric. Performances are good, the cinematography and effects are decent and even though the film is quite long, it never got dull or boring. Braga delivers a solid film, nothing too exceptional but more than solid horror entertainment.

21. 3.0* - Tomio by Junji Ito (2011)
From the writer of Tomie comes Tomio. There's no relation really, except that this is another Japanese low-budget horror affair that relies on a fun concept to carry the entire film. And Junji Ito gets away with in, in part because the runtime is quite short and the premise is interesting enough. A man stumbles across the street, into a hospital. There he confronts the doctors with his severed neck. The doctors don't believe the man, as a full beheading wouldn't have left him alive, but the x-ray scan shows a clean cut. According to the man, it's the curse of a fortune-teller that got to him. It's clearly a low-budget project, so don't expect too much in the way of cinematography and acting. But the concept is pretty cool and the effects are decent enough. The pacing is also fine, the ending is a hoot and there's something pleasantly morbid that kept me glued to the screen. Cheap but fun.

147. Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994) <--- Another telling of Frankenstein. I liked this one.
148. The Bone Collector (1999) <--- I liked this one. Good plot and good story telling
149. The Dark Half (1993) <--- pretty good
150. Innocent Blood (1992) <---- not good
151. Terror Firmer (1999) <---- really bad
152. Trauma (1993) <--- not good
153. Haunted (1995) <--- another one I liked. I like horror movies where the character is trying to "debunk" the horror.

And I am done! Thanks for another great horror challenge. Was able to finish the BFI 100, but still have many horror films to go.

36. Kingdom of the Spiders (1977) 5/10 TSZDT #751
Looking at the ending, I would have like to see a sequel.

37. Angel Heart (1987) 7/10 TSZDT #290
A very well written horror/neonoir film.

38. Otto; or, Up with Dead People (2008) 6/10
My second Bruce LaBruce film, I quite like his style so far.

39. What We Do in the Shadows (2014) 6/10 TSZDT #457
40. Zibahkhana (2007) 5/10 TSZDT #845
Better than expected, like leatherface lost in a zombie film.

41. The Wasp Woman (1959) 5/10
The movie poster couldn't be more misleading, good fun nonetheless.

42. Cabin Fever (2002) 5/10 TSZDT #353
And I'm giving a 5/10 to another of mightysparks' favorite to conclude the month :P To be fair it's not a bad film or anything, I think I was expecting something else. The comedy didn't work, and I couldn't feel any sympathy for any of the characters.

Thanks Max for another well hosted challenge, your commitment to doing something extra and keeping things interactive is always appreciated
