Hard to choose between this and Grave of the Fireflies, but those two films are by far my favorite Ghibli films (and the reason why I prefer Takahata over Miyazaki). The lightness of this film is amazing. Many of the vignettes are so very simple, but so warm and joyful. The TV remote battle is probably one of my favorites.
Damn it's hard to go further to the opposite ends of the spectrum, content-wise, than those two! One of the lightest and one of the darkest. I'd have to see Fireflies again - I did really like it, but something didn't quite put it over the top for me; and it's been 12-15 years and I've become at least a little more knowledgeable about anime since then.

If forced to pick between the two I'd likely pick Takahata as well though it would be very close. I still have a few to see from each though, and I've yet to see anything more than once, or any of their TV work, so I'm sure my opinion could change a bit eventually.
I think Miyazaki and Takahata balance each other out very well, and I like both quite a lot. I think we can all agree Miyazaki's son is inferior though. :D

I didn't mention it in my actual post but I also watched Evil Toons which was tagged as Animation on IMDB but had less than ten minutes of actual animation in its 80-minute runtime. So it didn't even come close to the 50% rule. Also it suuuuuuucked.

13. Cinderella (1950)
14. The Incredibles (2004)
15. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (1977)
16. Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (1975)

The claymation in this film was stunning - probably the best work I've seen (though, admittedly, that's not a large sample), and when pushed to the limits during the race, it was gorgeous to look at. The race might even be the best racing sequence I've seen. One of the ICM comments compared it to the pod racing scene in SWe1 and I can definitely see that comparison. But everything up to the racing sequence was just... blah. Didn't grab my attention and was relatively boring throughout. I came in at a 6/10, largely on the strength of the racing, but not a lot else to draw me in.

24-27. Little Witch Academia (2017) ep1-10

This seemed like a good idea (another supernatural-themed anime) after enjoying Parasite: The Maxim, but after 10 episodes (four hours in), I have had enough. The whole thing feels like Harry Potter for the Japanese market. There are a handful of highly inspired subplots, including in one episode that plays out like Inception with the little witch encountering multiples of her friend inside one of her friend's dreams, but much of the series feels more silly than thought-provoking. Occasional bits and pieces are fun, such as fish professor and a debt collector that is a literal dragon, but it's all a little too cutesy ultimately with annoying love interests and a Cupid bee. Something that does work though is a book series within the show that is clearly modeled on Twilight and whose author is a mere teenager herself, disinterested in all her fans. I might try to finish the series tomorrow, but I doubt it.

You should pay more attention to my 3.5* section in the weekly threads then :ph43r:

They're fun films. Yamazaki is one of Japan's better blockbuster directors. The film are quite slick, but also still pretty weird/twisted. And Shôta Sometani is one of Japan's more promising young actors.

Yeah, um, with the large amount of Asian films that you post about each week that I have never heard of it, I do tend to skim/skip over your reviews, unless it's in the 4.0 or above section, not going to pretend that isn't the case.

3. Les 12 travaux d'Astérix / The Twelve Tasks of Asterix (René Goscinny/Henri Gruel/Albert Uderzo, 1976)
4. Die Abenteuer des Prinzen Achmed / The Adventures of Prince Achmed (Lotte Reiniger, 1926) (re-watch)

5. Fritz the Cat (1972) (re-watch)
6. Heavy Traffic (1973)
7. Wizards (1977) (re-watch)
8. The Lord of the Rings (1978)

9. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Gary Trousdale/Kirk Wise, 1996)
10. Flåklypa Grand Prix / Pinchcliffe Grand Prix (Ivo Caprino, 1975)
11. Samâ uôzu / Summer Wars (Mamoru Hosoda, 2009)
12. American Pop (Ralph Bakshi, 1981)
13. Promare: Puromea (Hiroyuki Imaishi, 2019)
14. Hôhokekyo tonari no Yamada-kun / My Neighbors the Yamadas (Isao Takahata, 1999)

15a. Panda kopanda / Panda! Go Panda! (Isao Takahata, 1972) 34 minutes
15b. Panda kopanda amefuri sâkasu no maki / Panda Kopanda Rainy Day Circus (Isao Takahata, 1973) 38 minutes
72 minutes total
16. Misc WB and MGM shorts 1949-58 from Tex, Chuck, and Bob M - 7+7+8+7+6+7+7+6+7 = 62 minutes

a) Bear for Punishment (Chuck Jones, 1951)
b) Chump Champ (Tex Avery, 1950)
c) Droopy's Double Trouble (Tex Avery, 1951)
d) Flea Circus (Tex Avery, 1954)
e) The First Bad Man (Tex Avery, 1955)
f) Henhouse Henery (Bob McKimson, 1949)
g) Scrambled Aches (Chuck Jones, 1957)
h) Whoa, Be Gone! (Chuck Jones, 1958)
i) Sock-a-Doodle-Do (Bob McKimson, 1952)

A middling selection; 4 of these were Saturday morning TCM entries - always nice to wake up to a cartoon. I'm not that big a fan of Tex's work after he went to MGM, though the Droopy cartoons are usually exceptions, and this one definitely is the best of his in this group, with Droopy's super-strong twin brother defeating the would-be burglar of a posh mansion over and over. The two McKimsons are both Foghorn Leghorn - I love the character but the cartoons are rarely near the top; Henhouse Henery is pretty solid though. The Jones trio are a 3 Bears story which is OK, and two Roadrunner/Coyote entries, of which Whoa, Be Gone! is the better and pretty amusing. There are very few cartoons from these guys that I actually dislike, and none of these are in that category, but they're far from the best.

17. Yoru wa mijikashi aruke yo otome / Night is Short, Walk on Girl (Masaaki Yuasa, 2017)

Image

As I mentioned above in my Promare review, I saw Mind Game around the same time as Imaishi's Dead Leaves, and they were my introductions to the more surreal and weird side of anime (really had seen very, very little besides Ghibli, and dimly-remembered Robotech stuff at that point). I liked Mind Game a bit more, and always had this director sort of in the mental back burner, until somebody - I think it might have been on another forum - went bonkers over this one a couple of years ago. Something about those comments (can't remember who, or anything exact about them) really made me take notice; I love it when that happens, it's not a regular occurrence for me. So now's the time.

And from the first moments I knew the praise wasn't overdone. First off, this exemplifies - maybe as well as any film, animated or no - one of my favorite little themes, the one-night city adventure. After Hours is probably the most famous example, and that's a good one, and there are many others, probably from everywhere but especially the USA and France, at least from what I've seen or know. Somebody - or a couple of people - on a midnight ramble in a huge city, where anything can happen; usually some romance, maybe some crime, maybe something totally weird. Which is where this film comes in, probably the first animated example of this theme I've seen (anybody who knows others, point 'em out), in which a girl - high school age I guess, referred to just as "Otome", I guess that's roughly "girl", and the main male character has the similarly nondescript name "Senpai - goes on an all-night adventure in and around Kyoto, drinking, looking for a treasured book from her past, meeting creepy dudes and cool people, getting involved in a big musical school production, and sort of saving the town from a terrible cold, while battling hurricane force winds and all kinds of other stuff. Meanwhile Senpai, uncool and knowing it, dreams of Otome and goes to great lengths to win her heart, failing in comical and outlandish ways throughout. What I loved the most maybe - not that there was anything I didn't love - was the way this offers us not just one or two levels of "reality" but three - events and situations that are clearly real/realistic, bits that are maybe/maybe not so real, but could be (like Otome battling the winds and delivering food to so many people), and the totally obvious over-the-top elements of surrealism - all of which blend and flow into each other seamlessly. EDIT - I didn't even mention the animation, which blends cartoonishness with a minimal level of realism and really does manage to evoke the big-city vibe, and the colors and passions of youth and unfettered feelings and romance. Not good at describing animation, just going with the "feel" of the thing, really.

Absolutely wonderful and with a flawless ending; probably will be top 10 all-time anime for me and almost certainly the best film I've seen this month (though there have been two other contenders in these final days, after a fairly mediocre first three weeks).

If you liked Night is Short, Walk on Girl, don't forget to watch The Tatami Galaxy (an 11-episode anime series). They have the same director, the same animation style, the same main characters.

Yeah I have that and a couple of others, don't know if I'm going to find the time in the next day-and-a-half though.

I'm a big fan of Masaaki Yuasa's stuff in general. I will say Tatami Galaxy is one you HAVE to watch with 100% focus. It has by far the fastest, densest scripts I've ever watched in an anime. I also strongly recommend his Ping Pong: The Animation which is absolutely fantastic.

And it's on Netflix. I'm more excited about Tatami, but do I want to spend 4+ hours on it tomorrow? Not sure.

I think we share plenty of favorites among post-1990 or so East Asian cinema, but that's only a tiny fraction of my interest and it seems to be the vast majority of yours. I suspect that when I start delving into older anime I'll likely be more generous with those than you are. I'm sure glad that "dated" isn't an issue for me - in fact it's often a plus.

This was probably more interesting overall than Little Witch Academia, but it was not at all like I was expecting when I decided to switch to something else on Netflix. I love confidence trickster films and the initial episode gave me a Dirty Rotten Scoundrels vibe. The series is far more concerned with elaborate long cons though (there are three across the 14 episodes) and my interest waxed and waned throughout. The third tale (London) was the most intriguing for me, involving art forgery, but I probably enjoyed the second the most, set in Singapore and involving betting, since the protagonist is in on the long con for the first time. The first con job though (in Hollywood) wasn't too bad because of all the cool movie industry plugs, but I was never too involved. The series does have some incredible images, such as the gif above, which demonstrates how sunsets are animated in the series.

As October approaches, more horror has been creeping into my viewings....

Image
268. Titanic - La leggenda continua a.k.a. Titanic: The Legend Goes On (2000)
Highly educational film on the sinking of the Titanic. I had no idea that upon that fated vessel were mariachi rats, jewel thieves and a rapping dog.
Cursed Titanic Footage...
But seriously, if I hadn't also watched Ali Baba & The Gold Raiders this month, this would hands down be the worst thing I've seen so far.

Image
269. Peur(s) du noir a.k.a. Fear(s) in the Dark (2007)
Very good, unsettling horror anthology featuring a short from comic author Charles Burns.

Image
270. Houdini (2014)
This was actually a quite charming but obscure feature about a young Harry Houdini mentoring under the tutelage of the great magician Tesla. I liked the animation style quite a bit, reminding me a lot of more polished Lupin III character designs.

Image
271. Batman vs Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2019)
This was better than it had any right to be. At times both funny and with well-choreographed martial arts action, the plot is kind of ridiculous but you kind of have to expect that with a title like this.

Image
272. Space Adventure Cobra (1982)
Very good stuff. This is certainly one of the most stylish and well-directed anime I've seen from the '70s.

Image
273. Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil (2011)
The first Hoodwinked rode the crest of Shrek-alikes with its wise-cracking barrage of pop culture references in a fairy tale setting (albeit with terrible animation). The sequel improves the animation (somewhat...) but the busy, hyper script has an even more manic 'LOOK AT ME' feel than the first one and ultimately is probably only good for keeping the kids distracted for a while even though they aren't going to get half the jokes.

Image
274. Gestalt (1997)
Decent middle-of-the-road fantasy anime...

Image
275. Funan (2018)
Very good but grim story of the effects of the Khmer Rouge on the citizens of Cambodia. Possibly the film's biggest failing to me is in it's animation style that feels a little too cartoonish and lacking in detail to convey the horrors of what went on.

Image
276. Cleopatra D.C. (1989)
Lightweight, free-spirited adventure anime about the head of a corporation and the various jetsetting misadventures she gets into. Has a little bit of a light spy thriller feel to it like Agent Aika without as much cleavage.

Image
277. Tokyo Revelation (1994)
Based on Shin Megami Tensei, better known as the series that spun off the popular Persona RPGs, Tokyo Revelation is a whole lotta nonsense slapped together and barely coherent. The plot concerns a loner who conjures demons via a computer program or something. The whole thing is deadly serious but is incredibly hard to take seriously.

Image
278. Where the Dead Go to Die (2012)
WTF.... Well, if you want to see incredibly ugly CG animation out of a late '90s video game that features disgusting incomprehensible imagery for 95 minutes such as a boy fucking a dog over the corpse of his mother, then have I got the movie for you!

Image
279a. Eveready Harton in Buried Treasure (1929)
279b. There It Is (1928)
279c. Hunting in 1950 (1926)
279d. Tale of the Screaming Bishop (1934)
279e. Magic of Stop Motion shorts (Various)
279f. Path of Blood (2010)
279g. Frank Sudol shorts (Psych, Rise Zombie Rise)
279h. Lego Ninjago bonus shorts (Which Way to the Ocean (2017), Zane's Stand Up Promo (2017))
Shorts-a-go-go! Out of this bunch, I wanted to make special mention of There It Is which was utterly delightful. Charles Bowers stars in a heady mix of Melies-esque effects, stop motion surrealism and wacky comedy that makes for a very fun watch. I'll need to look into more of Bowers stuff if this is an indication of what he brings to the table.

Eh, probably not. If I were to just binge really short 40-minute OVAs all day and ignore my family, maybe, since I still need to post what I watched yesterday. I've got at least a few specific movies I wanted to try to get to today though as a lead in to the horror challenge. I knew the animation challenge would have some huge numbers though since animation in general is MUCH shorter than just about any other style.

I watched 2 Russian animated shorts, but they don't add up to 60 minutes, so I'm not counting it as a point.

Istoriya odnogo prestupleniya (1962)
Ostrov (1973)

Both directed by Fyodor Khitruk. I thought they were ok. I prefer the Vinni Pukh films.

280. Bayonetta: Bloody Fate (2013)
Much like the game its based on, Bayonetta is a frenzied flurry of borderline incoherent plot points punctuated with over-the-top action. Really it adapts to anime pretty well for what it is.

Image
281. Zakoldovannyy malchik a.k.a. The Enchanted Boy (1955)
Fantastical Russian fairy tale that plays out in a similar way to Thumbelina but with a boy. It's cute but isn't earth-shattering.

282. Thunderbean Thursday Special Set 2016 (Interesting Guest, It's Only the Beginning, Don Coyote Cycle Tests, Phillip's Light Show, The Museum, The Magic Music, Dreamland, Free Import, Perry Como/Rabbit, Felix Makes Good, Disney 50s Pencil Tests, Story of Hansel & Gretel, A Smattering of Spots, Harryhausen's Mother Goose, In The Park)
Here we have a another special set from Thunderbean that collects rare shorts like those of obscure animator Joop Geesink, a super rare Toby the Pup short (The Museum, Disney pencil tests, a couple of early Harryhausen stop motion shorts and other assorted interesting ephemera for those into classic animation.

Image
283. Surf's Up (2007)
This was actually not bad. The mockumentary setup works pretty well for the subject matter which comes across as a kind of satire of surfing docs like Endless Summer but with a more traditional kids movie moral tale at the center.

Image
284. Bai she: yuan qi a.k.a. White Snake (2019)
White Snake I thought was quite good, certainly a step up from the last big CG animated Chinese film I watched (Nezha) with a plot that's more grounded in some ways even amidst the high fantasy wuxia concepts with some absolutely beautiful animation. This makes the off-model stiffly animated characters that occasionally crop up stick out even more. Still, it's certainly worth a watch.

285a. Endless Serenade (2000)
285b. Cat Shit One (2010)
285c. Coloring Spring (2015)
285d. Little Heart (2012)
285e. Tachikoma na hibi a.k.a. Tachikoma Days (2002)
Here we've got a group of anime shorts. Of particular note is the CG animated war film Cat Shit One which uses anthropomorphized animals to convey the horrors of war. It's not 100% effective but still interesting. It could've done with being stretched out to feature length with more character development.

286-287. Top wo Nerae! & Top wo Nerae 2! Gattai Movie!! a.k.a. Gunbuster: The Movie & Diebuster: The Movie (2006)
I had seen the original OVA series of Gunbuster but thought I'd get a refresher via the summary movie produced in the mid 00s along with a summary movie of its sequel Diebuster a.k.a. Gunbuster 2 which I hadn't seen before. Gunbuster holds up quite well even in this truncated state. Diebuster I remember receiving some flack on its original release I think due to expectations vs. what we got. To be honest, I'm totally fine with what we got which feels much closer to a hybrid of two of Gainax' other big series with the kinetic action and surrealism of FLCL with the heady metaphors and bizarre mech designs of Evangelion. Still it does tie into the original Gunbuster and offers some interesting story points for those willing to accept the new stylization of it.

288b. Rozovaya kukla a.k.a. Pink Doll (1997)
288c. Dyuymovochka a.k.a. Thumbelina (1964)
288d. Balerina na korable a.k.a. Ballerina on the Boat(1969)
Another group of Russian shorts. Pink Doll was uber creepy....

Image
289. H.P. Lovecraft's Dunwich Horror and Other Stories (2007)
This was a bizarre one... Clay figures re-enacting a trilogy of H.P. Lovecraft stories. Somewhat unsettling but also restricted by its obvious budget limitations.

I'll have one more post tomorrow... Too tired to wrap it all up at the moment...

7. The Simpsons
7a. "Dog of Death" (1992)
7b. "Lisa's Rival" (1994)
7c. "A Star Is Burns" (1995)

8. The Secret of NIMH (1982)
The book this movie is based on ("Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH) was a childhood favorite, though I remembered little other than it involved intelligent rats that escaped from a government lab. Seeing the movie, I have to admit that the plot if threadbare and unsatisfactory. The animation, on the other hand, is gloomy, atmospheric, and complex.

9. Onward (2020)
A decent but unsurprising Pixar effort. The formula is growing a little stale.

10. Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
The plot offers a cool concept, and the result is an enjoyable movie that goes easy on the gooey kids' movie sentiment for once in favor of good action scenes and comedy. I have one complaint, though. Here in New York, I've spent the past four months focused on police brutality and corruption (after spending the four months before that focused on mass death). So it's a bit much when I watch what looks like a fun animation comedy and end up seeing scenes of police brutality (or scenes of police corruption, as in Zootopia, which I saw earlier this month) used for laughs. I know I sound ridiculous, but when a donut in a police uniform beats up a captive prisoner, it's not funny anymore.

45. Make Mine Music (1946, Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske, Jack Kinney & Bob Cormack): 4.5 - To complete the Disney Canon before this challenge is over I also watched my last unseen one, which for some reason isn't on Disney+. Unfortunately it was an uneven music shorts anthology which ranges from terribly boring (everything else), extremely poor (Casey at the Bat), mediocre (Benny Goodman's All the Cats Join In) to passable; Peter and the Wolf, Johnnie Fedora & Alice Bluebonnet and The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met, Of those the first suffers from an unnecessary narrator and the later two from dragging their enjoyable premises on too long, which keep them from being better.

45 not a bad score, when I actually wanted to make Silent my main challenge for this month.

While I'm happy as I said above to Onderhond to be able to enjoy "dated" material, and still hold onto Disney's first five features as the pinnacle (to date) of the animated feature, I certainly can recognize that there are plenty of things that don't hold up. The animation here is actually pretty good - that was a positive surprise; I haven't seen very much pre-1970s anime at all but I have seen a few shorts here and there and some older TV stuff, and this is pretty fluid and detailed and nicely done all around (except maybe for the one human main character who just looks weird) all around. And it's b/w which is rather interesting - not a lot of b/w animated features out there, at least not that I've seen; I don't think most countries outside of maybe France and the Soviet Union were doing feature-length animation before they were doing color. And Japan, I know now. Unfortunately the propaganda elements in this grow thicker and thicker as the film goes along, and really the concept of selling nationalist, pro-war stuff to CHILDREN - it's basically cute little bunny wabbits singing patriotic songs and being trained to fight and kill - as this clearly is makes it utterly risible. And the songs are really fucking irritating, and the racism in the American portrayals at the end is as bad as anything anti-Japanese in American films of the period; I suppose I shouldn't have expected anything else, but I haven't seen much of this kind of material from Japan so it was... something. Overall this is pretty bad, though it's understandable that, being Japan's first feature-length animation (or is it first surviving - anyone know if there were earlier works that didn't make it?) it's on the PASTE list and has some historical importance. In this case, that's as far as it goes.

19. Nick Park duo 30+30=60 minutes
a) A Matter of Loaf and Death (2008)
b) The Wrong Trousers (1993) (re-watch)

I haven't seen any of the Wallace and Gromit shorts since the 90s; I still have, probably in my storage unit, the three-tape box of the first three on VHS and I watched those 2-3 times apiece at least back in the day and loved them all - it was one of the few things my last girlfriend and I strongly agreed on, and we both liked them much more than most of our friends (who were not resistant to animation but just didn't get these for whatever reason). Probably helps to appreciate the general low-key genteel aspects of the British humor sensibility. Anyway I wasn't that crazy about Park's first two features, and I still haven't bothered with his third, but this was the perfect time to finally catch up on the most recent W&G short and go back to an old favorite. Loaf is easily the best-animated, most detailed and most visually spectacular of the shorts to date - one of the best-looking stop-motion films I've ever seen in fact, really extraordinarily beautiful and with great shots all around. But it's overall not as amusing as the earlier films to me and the ending action sequence is just a bit too much. Still loads of fun, but probably overall my least-favorite of the four.

The Wrong Trousers remains Park's masterpiece, and one of the greatest animated films in the roughly half-hour timeframe. Two things I love about it that I probably got more out of now than 20+ years ago: first, much of the film has a very film noir - specifically Hitchcockian - vibe to it - the new lodger reminds me of "The Lodger" in Hitch's first film, the mysterious guy we know is up to no good while the oblivious landlords (well, landlord - Gromit of course is always instantly suspicious) are blithely going on about their business. The shots of the dark streets, and Wallace following the penguin-fiends, I particularly love and have a very specific noir vibe. And second, I love how the film just builds and builds, going from a relatively "ordinary", guy and his dog at home story into what amounts to a Coyote/Roadrunner chase at the end, but all done very smoothly with a continuous even ramping-up of action and speed. But perhaps the clearest sign of an artist's genius is what s/he can do with the simplest of elements, and the amount of expression Park can get from Gomit's mouthless face remains one of his most memorable overall achievements to me.

20. Yoake tsugeru Rû no uta / Lu Over the Wall (Masaaki Yuasa, 2017)

After just going nuts over the same year's Night is Short, this had to be a top priority - especially given that I just didn't have it in me to go through 4 hours of Tatami Galaxy yesterday, and wanted to get a start on horror. And going in with high expectations I think probably hurt this experience a bit, though I really doubt if even on a subsequent viewing it's going to hit the level of the other 2017 film or the earlier Mind Game. First off this is much more conventional in it's storytelling/narrative, and it just feels a bit too long at just under 2 hours, and the mix of emotions and genre elements - at one point even verging on horror I think - doesn't seem as perfectly realized as in the other two Yuasa films I've seen, or for that matter Hosoda's Summer Hours which I also watched this month. But this story of a young gloomy nerdy guy (the typical Yuasa protagonist I guess) living in a crummy little seaside fishing village who gets involved with a mermaid is still enjoyable overall and I really like the particular way in which Yuasa combines mostly realistic character animation with more outlandish and weird stuff, which isn't at all surreal in this context as it is in the other two films I've seen, but which gives everything a nice sort of fairytale feeling.

21. Russian shorts 17+19+18+11=65 minutes
a) Troe iz Prostokvashino / Three from Prostokvashino (Vladimir Popov, 1978)
b) Malysh i Karlson / Junior and Karlson (Boris Stepantsev, 1968)
c) Kanikuly v Prostokvashino / Vacation in Prostokvashino (Vladimir Popov, 1980)
d) Umka (Vladimir Pekar / Vladimir Popov, 1969)

Two of these are on the IMDb shorts top 50, the other two are close. I think it's clear that Soviet animated shorts are getting some of the same (mostly) local vote-stuffing and promoting that Indian and Turkish features have, though overall I'm a *little* more impressed with these fake news titles than most of the crappy Bollywood and Istanbulywood titles that pop up on the top 250. But not so much that I'd put them on any lists myself. The Karlson short is my favorite here, mostly because I love the charcoal pencil backgrounds (even if they are static) and because it has a little moodiness to it - the kid's imaginary friend is what causes all the problems, but if you look at it from an adult POV you see a potentially suicidal, depressive child. a) and c) are two in a series about Fedor and his talking cat and dog and are both fairly cute and charming, the c) has a weird bit of propaganda stuck right in the middle. And Umka is the most beautifully animated of this quartet, about a young polar bear being taught some things about the world by his mother.

Well that's it for me. A disappointing month in the sense that I really hoped and expected to see more, but sometimes odd moods take over me and I just didn't get in the animation "vibe" until the last week; but on the other hand, a terrific month in that I gained a new very strong favorite, and a few others that were really, really solid. Thanks for running it frbrown!

Last post of the challenge! Thanks frbrown for hosting! It's been a blast!

I thought it only fitting to watch only spooky animation today in the lead in to the Horror Challenge.

Image
290. Howard Lovecraft & the Frozen Kingdom (2016)
The idea of casting a young Lovecraft in a rollicking adventure story with a pet Cthulhu named Spot is a pretty amusing one. The animation itself is a litle on the ugly side but I still appreciate the effort going into to introducing the youth of today to the Elder Gods.

Image
291a. Witch's Night Out (1978)
291b. Casper: There's Good Boos To-Night (1948), The Friendly Ghost (1945), Boo Moon (1954)
291c. Felix the Cat in Skulls and Sculls (1930)
Witch's Night had an interesting visual style very much of its time but still unique enough to set itself apart. The story is well-suited to a Halloween watch to with a witch (played by Gilda Radner) stirring things up after getting disillusioned with how people were treating the holiday. The Casper shorts were a nice bit of nostalgia. I had the first two of these on a VHS that I used to watch all the time as a kid.

Image
292. Sairento mebiusu a.k.a. Silent Mobius: The Motion Picture (1991)
This one was a decent effort but felt too rushed. I think the TV series may be a better watch.

Image
293. Gekijouban Blood-C: The Last Dark a.k.a. Blood-C: The Last Dark (2012)
Blood-C always seemed like a weird idea to me. Surrounding the loner lead from the very serious Blood: The Last Vampire with a supporting cast and adding doses of comedy just felt a little off, and that trickles into the movie as well, creating some tonal issues that shift between heightened action, grim horror and random dorky comedy that just feels out of place. Still, it's well-animated and worth a watch for anyone wanting some vampire action.

Image
294. Roots Search: Shokushin buttai X (1986)
This one starts out with a similar premise to films like Alien and Event Horizon but goes off in a weird pseudo-philosophical direction that doesn't really mesh with what preceded it. Just watch L.I.L.Y. Cat instead if you want to see an anime Alien rip-off that delivers what it promises.

Image
295a. Space Angel: The Ghost and Crystal Mace (1964)
295b. Hoppity Hooper: Ghost (1965)
295c. The New 3 Stooges: Mummies Boys (1965)
295d. Popeye: Spooky Swabs (1957)
295e. Meany, Miny & Moe: House of Magic (1937)
Another chunk of spooky classic cartoons. Space Angel is probably the one that stuck out the most here. It's another series that uses that ultra creepy "Syncro-vox" style of using live actors' mouths transposed over the animation to make the characters talk like Clutch Cargo. In fact, this "technology" is far creepier than the lame ghost that shows up in the episode.

296-297a. Sazan aizu a.k.a. 3x3 Eyes E1-4 (1991)
297b. Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2 (2007)
297c. DC Showcase: Adam Strange (2020)[b/]
3x3 Eyes was a solid series with some unique aspects that fuses fantasy, horror and Japanese mysticism into a modern context with a little humor as well (and unlike Blood-C, the humor doesn't feel as out of the place with the softer character designs here). Metal Gear Saga Vol. 2 uses the CG animated cut scenes from the games with voice over to stitch together a history of the plot of the Metal Gear series. Surprise surprise. It still doesn't make any damn sense. Adam Strange is a pretty decent short but honestly the story it tells feels too compressed and would be better served as a full-length feature.

THATS A WRAP FOLKS!

Overall this is pretty bad, though it's understandable that, being Japan's first feature-length animation (or is it first surviving - anyone know if there were earlier works that didn't make it?) it's on the PASTE list and has some historical importance. In this case, that's as far as it goes.
Yes, it was the first Japanese feature-length animation. And I agree that it's bad.

I think Kenzou Masaoka was the best anime director of the 40s, so I suggest watching Kumo to Tulip and Suteneko Tora-chan.

I think I have the first of those at least, so thanks for the rec. I'll get to them... someday.
