While it stands well in the shadows of Barry Sonnenfeld's two live action films from the 1990s, this animated take on the "kooky, mysterious and spooky" family was fun. The origins prologue was intriguing and the swipe at social media was decent. Parts of the film are pretty funny too (Wednesday in a science lab) even if the gags are hit-and-miss -- though as a tale about the detriments of conformity over individualism, this is unsubtle and preachy.

An animated adventure with an environmental message. While the ecological angle is a bit unsubtle, there is much to like in how the film tries to present human activity from the critters' point-of-view, seeing earth-moving machines as hungry dragons and speeding cars as monsters. The characters are, however, unfortunately quite forgettable, and I disliked how cutesy the film tries to be at times with some of the critters' childish mannerisms.

Donald's Dog Laundry (1940, Jack King) (8 min) : 7.5 - Donald's temper and clumsiness make me like his shorts more than the others.
Chef Donald (1941, Jack King) (7 min): 7.5
The Little Whirlwind (1941, Riley Thomson) (8 min): 6.8 - The premise of a conscious little whirlwind hindering Mickey cleaning up a garden is ridiculous, but the execution still works.
Lend a Paw (1941, Clyde Geronimi) (8 min): 7.0

Did you like Mai Mai Miracle?
Yea, I liked it. It reminded me of the more laid back slice-of-life Ghibli movies like Only Yesterday and Whisper of the Heart.

I remember this. All I can say is tehe
Yea, I actually had been watching it back in like 2000 or 2001 whenever it was originally being fansubbed because of the Gainax connection and thought I finished it. But apparently I never did after noticing I only had gotten up to ep 16. And yea, this show is FILTHY. I do get amused though whenever I think of somebody who starts this thinking it's Hamtaro. :D

So my plan was to watch all the old Disney movies that I either never saw as a kid because I didn't like animated films that much, or I saw them so long ago I barely remember them. (Seriously--I never saw Lion King. I have been hated on many times for it.) However, the plan didn't go so well as I became obsessed with a non-animated show that is leaving Netflix at the end of the month that I wanted to finish. So, it hasn't been a very good showing for me. But still fun to try!

Overall, many of the older Disney films didn't age well. People may hate me for this but some of them seem pretty overrated, not necessarily by cinephile folks, but just the general public. Up was wonderful, definitely my top pick. The love story in Wall-E was beautiful too. The only good part of Frozen was that the love story was not about a girl being rescued by a handsome prince, but the love between sisters--that I appreciated.

1. The Princess and the Frog (2009) 7/10
2. Wall-E (2008) 7/10
3. The Emperor's Nightengale (1951) 4/10
4. Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genuis (2001) 6/10
5. The Lion King (1994) 6/10
6. Up (2009) 9/10
7. Toy Story (1995) 7/10
8. Tangled (2010) 6/10
9. Toy Story 2 (1999) 6/10
10. The Nighmare Before Christmas (1993) 5/10
11. Monsters, Inc. (2001) 7/10
12. Frozen (2013) 7/10
13. Ratatouille (2007) 8/10
14. Aladdin (1992) 6/10

242-243. Takunomi E1-13 (2018)
here's an anime with 12 minute episodes that seems to mostly be about a group of women who work desk jobs during the day and in the evening blow off steam by getting drunk and snacking. That's pretty much it. The series seems to put a lot of focus on the food and drink they consume. It's largely forgettable.

Image
244. Le chat du rabbin a.k.a. The Rabbi's Cat (2011)
Nice animation and a quirky, intelligent plot make for a good watch.

Image
245. Popeye in Technicolor (Thunderbean Blu-ray): Little Swee'pea, I Never Changes My Attitude, Popeye the Sailor Meets Ali Baba's Forty Thieves, A Date to Skate, The Paneless Window Washer, Me Musical Nephews, Taxi-Turvy, Popeye for President, Insect to Injury, A Haul in One, Nearlyweds, Barbecue for Two
The title of this blu-ray is a little misleading since it actually has a handful of black & white Popeye shorts as well. Anyway, the transfers are generally quite good even when the source material is a little damaged at times. Still this is probably the best representation of many of the classic shorts you're going to get.

Image
246. Death Note Rewrite: L o Tsugu Mono a.k.a. Relight The World 2 - The Successors (2008)
This is basically a summary movie of the second season of Death Note. Overall, much like the actual second season itself and while still containing some twisty clever writing, the whole thing just feels like a rehash of the first season with Near in paricular just being a blatant and lazy copy of L.

Image
247. My Little Pony: Equestria Girls - Friendship Games (2015)
Another bright, cheerful Equestria Girls film. It does a decent job of having a grounded Field Day-style plot but with an added magical flavor befitting the My Little Pony series.

Image
248. Metropia (2009)
The uncanny valley is STRONG with this one.

Image
249. Tayna tretey planety a.k.a. Mystery of the Third Planet (1981)
This one has some very creative, unique (and at times damned creepy-looking) visuals. It's unfortunate the plot itself is a little bland and middling.

Image
250. The Blue Racer: Complete Collection (1972-1974)
Eh, this whole thing, from Friz Freleng, feels like a racist rip-off of characters like Tweety & Sylvester and Tom & Jerry.

Image
251-253. Hai Sukoa Garu 2 a.k.a. High Score Girl II E1-9 (2019)
I liked this series quite a bit and feel like this is a satisfactory closer to it.

I like both.

Girls' Last Tour is kind of like a more dystopian version of Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou (i.e. less beautiful scenery and more food shortage), but it has a similar feeling.

Haven't done much film watching this month, but I have got in a handful so far:

1. Minions (Balda-Coffin, 2015)
Despicable Me spin-off. Has its moments but overall it's mediocre, with a plot that rambles around.
4/10

Image

2. Evangerion shin gekijôban: Jo / Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone (Tsurumaki-Masayuki, 2007)
Movie version of the first half of the TV series. Good mecha action but is more of a summary of the series than its own thing.
6/10

Image

3. Moana (Hall-Musker, 2016)
Some stunning animation and good songs. A fun and emotional fantasy quest that ends up being one of Disney's best recent offerings.
7/10

Image

4. Ralph Breaks the Internet (Moore-Johnston, 2018)
I enjoyed the original a lot. This is a weaker follow-up that has the characters make decisions to drive the plot rather than because they make sense or fit the character. There's a lot of brilliant animation and inventiveness on display, but opposed to this is an orgy of Disney cross-promotion and internet pop culture worship that I didn't like.
4/10

5. Shorts [Total time = 60 mins]
a. Number 1 (Smith, 1939) [3 mins]
b. Number 2: Message from the Sun (Smith, 1941) [2 mins]
c. Number 3: Interwoven (Smith, 1946) [3 mins]
d. Number 4: Manteca (Smith, 1947) [2 mins]
e. Number 5: Circular Tensions: Homage to Oskar Fischinger (Smith, 1949) [3 mins]
f. Number 7 (Smith, 1951) [5 mins]
g. Number 10 (Smith, 1956) [5 mins]
h. Number 11: Mirror Animations (Smith, 1956) [4 mins]
i. Mest kinematograficheskogo operatora / The Cameraman's Revenge (Starewicz, 1912) [12 mins]
j. Fuji (Breer, 1974) [8 mins]
k. Birds Anonymous (Freleng, 1957) [7 mins]
l. Hot-Rod and Reel! (Jones, 1959) [6 mins]

FTV:1.

Mr. and Mrs. Kabal's Theatre (1967) 7.

The set-piece in their “Shorts and Animation” collection of his works, Arrow present a excellent transfer, with the print presenting the animation cleanly, whilst retaining a rough film grain, and the smooth soundtrack bellowing out. Breaking away from shorts by opening his feature film debut with the 4th wall breaking exchange of him being filmed in live action, talking to the animated Mrs. Kabal, production designer/writer/directing auteur Walerian Borowczyk outlines what was to come in his live action works, with “Boro” giving the background animation a bare minimalism which would be continued in the magnificent live action Blanche (1971-also reviewed.)

Previously having made a large number of animated shorts before this, Boro places everything he had been building towards in this 80 minute trip, with Boro bouncing the Kabal’s between his recurring abstract, grotesque surrealism, and a wickedly playful, anything goes comedic mood. Drawn in thick felt tip,Borowczyk focuses on Mr. Kabal going on a avant-garde voyage into the heart of Mrs. Kabal's (women as the centre of the film being a major recurring theme of Boro’s) which flies into a rough, inventive mix of cut-out,and hand-drawn animation, heightened by scrambled sound effects and live action inserts.

Going on a jolly trip with the couple, the screenplay by Boro draws the line at a cynical presentation of marriage which would continue across his credits, as Mr. Kabal uses binoculars to get a cheeky glimpse at live action ladies, whilst keeping one eye on the dominant, iron fist of Mrs. Kabal.

My Boro feature rankings:

The Story of Sin (1975)
Blanche (1971)
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne (1981)
Immoral Tales (1973)
Mr. and Mrs. Kabal's Theatre (1967)

11. Samâ uôzu / Summer Wars (Mamoru Hosoda, 2009)
12. American Pop (Ralph Bakshi, 1981)
13. Promare: Puromea (Hiroyuki Imaishi, 2019)

Good chance I would have watched this one anyway but given that Onderhond and beavis both promoted it on the 2019 podcast thread I figured why not now. Looks like I saw the director's previous Dead Leaves about 5 1/2 years ago - right around the same time I watched Yuasa's Mind Game. Both films together certainly showed me a different side of anime that I wasn't really familiar with or frankly aware of but I liked the Yuasa film much, much more - Dead Leaves was as I remember, just too much and not enough at the same time - too frenetic, nothing to hold onto outside of the visuals. But I still liked it overall so was certainly looking forward to this.

And it didn't disappoint, though on one viewing I certainly didn't like it as much as Onderhond. The animation is pretty amazing, very dynamic and punchy yet full of very clean CGI lines and shapes - this felt different from most recent CG animation in a good way, like somebody's solved the problem (for me, that is) of the too-perfect digital feel of so much that's out there. Of course I have no idea if it was all digitally-done or if there's some traditional hand-drawn stuff there, hard for a novice like me to tell, but in any case I loved the colors, the action sequences, the whipsaw transitions between scenes, etc. I have to say I was a bit surprised at the relatively traditional plot - even an anime novice like me has seen a lot of these elements - teenagers in super-powered mechas trying to save the world - many times before, and this specifically called to mind some older series like Robotech and the American Battle of the Planets which I remember from long ago. Probably closer analogs will be apparent for people that know their anime better; but in any case this doesn't mean that the film feels particularly unoriginal or dated in it's storytelling, because the animation keeps it all pretty fresh. I do think the opening action scene - before we've gotten any real introduction to what's going on - feels a little long, and I was starting to worry that the whole film was going to be pitched at this fever level, but on the whole it succeeds in knowing when to slow down and speed up again. And the resolution is a little... ordinary I guess in plot terms. But these are minor quibbles and the only really major problem I had was with the music, which is mostly awful pop crap, much of it in English, which takes me right out of the film; it often felt very 80s-90s to me when the film was definitely of the current moment. The background instrumental music was OK but not really memorable; the end credits song (in Japanese) I actually liked, so it's not all a loss. But it's still enough to be somewhat problematic, at least on one viewing, and to keep this from being an instant favorite - even if it's not too far off. Cool shit in any case.

Among the anime that I've seen, I think the closest comparison is Gurren Lagann. It's by the same director, and has a similar story and style. Even the character design is similar (Promare's Galo looks similar to Gurren Lagann's Kamina).

16. 2.5* - Have a Nice Day [Hao Jile] by Jian Liu (2017)

Chinese arthouse animation. Don't expect cuddly animals or CG superheroes, director Jian Liu take on a very down to earth crime story that could've just as well been a live action film. It's a bold move for sure, but I'm not sure it was the correct one. Fans of animation better lower their hopes. The art style is quite nice, also very different, which gives the film a unique look. The animation though is almost nonexistent. The camera is extremely static, pretty much every action shot is a cheap effect (or is simply cut from the film) and character animations are chunky. I assume it's made to be like this for a reason, but if it's a matter of skill, then they shouldn't even have considered doing it as an animated film. It's just painful to watch. The plot is decent, but nothing special. A typical crime tale where different parties are trying to get a bag of money. The dub is okay, but not spectacular, the soundtrack is moody but limited. It's a good thing that the film is quite short, it's certainly a novel experience, but please get some decent animators next time.

254. Felidae (1994)
I really dug this feline neo-noir. Very good core mystery that also doesn't talk down to its audience or make the content overly cutesy or kid-friendly. The voice-acting was also quite good. I think this one is deserving of more attention.

I decided to take in a group of two-tone Russian shorts. The highlight of this bunch to me was the spy parody Passion of Spies. It doesn't always land its gags, but it's throwing them at you so fast, some are bound to work.

256. Doragon bôru: Makafushigi dai bôken a.k.a. Dragon Ball: Mystical Adventure (1988)
Honestly I thought this was a little better than the DBZ movies in general just because there seemed to be more going on than just "big bad shows up. Goku blasts him. The end." (although it does have that too...).

257. Aladdin and the King of Thieves (1996)
This was actually a pretty decent DTV Disney sequel. I think Aladdin benefits a little more than some since 1001 Arabian Nights comprises many different stories to pull elements from. Plus we have the addition of the long-lost family dynamic as well. The genie unfortunately is even more annoying here than usual with the constant barrage of pop culture nonsense heightened even further.

I liked the 2nd story more than the 1st story, but I prefer Shinoda's adaptation (it's based on the same story as Shinoda's Under the Blossoming Cherry Trees).

15-23. Parasyte - The Maxim (2014)

Image

Clocking in at nine hours long (24 x 22.5min episodes), this anime series has its ups and downs, but I liked it overall. I was actually really loving the first five or six episodes, which reminded me a lot of the Animorphs books, focusing on a teenager who discovers that a parasite has taken over his hand. There are some hilarious moments as the parasite talks to him in the school bathroom (much the bafflement of another student) and the gradual bonding between the pair works very well to the point that they form a true symbiotic relationship, relying on one another to survive. Alas, as the series wears on and others become aware of the parasite takeover, things gets less interesting. There is the fun idea of plucking hairs to check if someone is a parasite -- which brings Covid-19 testing to mind; who is infected?! -- but all of the government planning is a bit eh, and then the series keeps getting lost in chaotic battle scenes. The parasites themselves look pretty cool, but much less so when fighting, and while I liked this overall, I would have preferred for the series to concentrate on the symbiosis rather than fighting and philosophising over whether humans are the true parasites on Earth.

FTV:2:Walerian Borowczyk cartoon shorts.

Image

1:Le concert de M. et Mme. Kabal (1963) 7 mins. 7

Getting the Kabal's on stage years before they would become the main subject of his debut feature film Mr. and Mrs. Kabal's Theatre (1967-also reviewed) writer/director Walerian Borowczyk draws them in pen, rather then the thick felt tip pen style they would later be drawn with, giving the couple a softer appearance. Departing from the cut-out style of his past shorts, Boro draws a early outline of macabre surrealism in his work,as Mr. Kabal dies on stage.

2:Les astronautes (1959) 13 min. 7

The earliest credit to feature in the entire box set, Walerian Borowczyk impressively already displays a eye for a distinctive style, in this collaboration with fellow film maker Chris Marker. Taking a early snap at Sci-Fi with still photos of a astronaut heading to outer space, which "Boro" alters with stylishly surreal flourishes of avant-garde cut-out animation layering torn photos and freeze-frame photo manipulation across the screen,as the astronaut takes a pause from heading to space,in order to get a glance of Walerian's wife, and future La Jetee (1962) star Ligia Borowcyk.

3:L'encyclopedie de grand-maman en 13 volumes (1963)7 mins. 5 out of 10.

The lone title in what appears to have been a planned series of shorts covering all the letters of the alphabet, writer/director Walerian Borowczyk runs along A-C with a continuation of his animation motifs, with "Boro" taking a snap inside the inner workings of a camera (a major recurring theme in his cartoon credits.) Continuing to work on the cut-out animation style, Boro smooths some of the rough edges down in sending a balloon over grandmothers encyclopaedia.

4:Renaissance (1963). 9 mins. 5 out of 10.

Continuing from M. et Mme. Kabal (1963) to depart from the cut-out style of his earlier cartoons, writer/director Walerian Borowczyk flies into stop-motion animation, displaying a impressive nimbleness in placing feathers back on a owl and the head of a baby doll bouncing towards the renaissance.

5:The Games of Angels (1964). 12 mins. 4.

Peeled away from the bright surreal colours and industrial hum of the earlier shorts, writer/director Walerian Borowczyk continues to experiment with his animation styling,in this case showing a great improvement in using camera moves to bring a added dimension to the dour colours of this abstract panning into the cells of angels.

6:Scherzo Infernal (1984). 5 mins. 6.

The first short film had made since 1979, writer/directing auteur Walerian Borowczyk brings recurring themes and motifs of his live action works into his final animated short, with the fantastical surreal angel and demon lapping at Boro's distinctive grotesque erotic mood,as red flames of paper flicker over the desires of the angel.

And one non-Boro short.

7: O Matylde s náhradní hlavou (1985) 8 minutes. 8.

Unlocking Matylda's head to reveal the shelves stacked with new info inside it, co-writer/co-directors Adolf Born/ Jaroslav Doubrava & Milos Macourek browse the pages with adorable pencil sketch animation, with the rough-edge of the designs being drawn with lush floral colours.Darting along to Iva Janzurova (who has just filmed her 200th screen credit) delivering a chatty narration, the writers playfully mix whimsical Comedy from Matylda's new discovery in education, and delightfully surreal Fantasy exchanging knowledge between the two heads of Matylda.

A favourite shot from the Boro cartoons,of Ligia Borowcyk.

08. Anastasia, by Don Bluth & Gary Goldman (1997) 7/10

Beautifully animated. Some flaws in the humans' facial expressions, though... The songs are nice, and I enjoyed Christopher Lloyd's performance.

09. Stuart Little, by Rob Minkoff (1999) 5/10

Early computer-animated movie, the theme is a metaphor of sorts, but it doesn't always work very well...

43. Anastasia (1997, Don Bluth & Gary Goldman): 5.0 - Contrary to cinephage I didn't like this one much. The whole plot is a romanticized view on royalty, being an American animation it doesn't mention the communism cause behind the Revolution once, while celebrating the decadence enjoyed by royalty. On top of that there is also an unnecessary villain inserted into the plot, while the mechanics of the basic plot about a boy and girl falling in love during a journey works well on its own. This part of the plot is done well. It's also nicely animated. The songs are annoying and take the pace out of the movie.

11. Samâ uôzu / Summer Wars (Mamoru Hosoda, 2009)
12. American Pop (Ralph Bakshi, 1981)
13. Promare: Puromea (Hiroyuki Imaishi, 2019)
14. Hôhokekyo tonari no Yamada-kun / My Neighbors the Yamadas (Isao Takahata, 1999)

I don't know my anime "rankings" or really how much people love this film or that film - apart from knowing that Spirited Away always seems to be on top of the whole mountain, unless it's Akira. But my impression has always been that this is one of Takahata's, and Studio Ghibli's, less-beloved works. Perhaps it has something to do with the sketch-comedy nature of the story, or the sketch-style of the art? It's certainly very different from anything else, though the use of pastels/watercolors does point the way forward to Takahata's last film (as does a very brief moment early in the film when a baby is seen inside a bamboo stalk). Anyway in this case different is better and I personally just loved this - at various points I thought it might be in "masterpiece" territory, a 10, but in the end it does feel a little long and a little less amusing in it's last third. Still pretty terrific, a lovely slice-of-life story of a small nuclear family (salaryman dad, housewife mom, grandma, adolescent boy, younger daughter, irritable dog) living in what appears to be an average suburban neighborhood. This felt much more western to me - the family all dress in western styles and the house and almost everything else we see feel like they could be transported easily to the environs of L.A. or Montreal (in fact there were several brief moments when I had Montreal flashbacks). It's basically just scenes from a life, mostly comical but with some more serious or thoughtful undertones, particularly in the various poetic quotations, and the wonderful use of music in highlighting or contrasting with the visuals - I especially liked the use of Mahler, with the epic ending of the 1st Symphony used as a counterpoint to the hilarious scene where the father is trying to get the family to care about the first snowfall instead of watching a snow-filled adventure scene on TV.

15a. Panda kopanda / Panda! Go Panda! (Isao Takahata, 1972) 34 minutes
15b. Panda kopanda amefuri sâkasu no maki / Panda Kopanda Rainy Day Circus (Isao Takahata, 1973) 38 minutes
72 minutes total

I definitely don't remember actually seeing these two shorts, which together make up a sort-of short feature, but for some reason I knew the music, it was totally familiar, and there were a couple of moments that seemed to hit some spot in my memory - were these released on a compilation back in VHS or early DVD days, does anybody know? Anyway, a little girl with red pigtails who looks a lot like Pippi Longstocking (and looking at the trivia on IMDb it seems that Takahata and Miyazaki, who wrote the script, had actually wanted to do a Pippi adaptation but couldn't get the right) and lives with her grandmother is left alone when grandma goes visiting, and befriends a giant panda and his cub, and they have a series of adventures. This is just on the border of being intolerably cute to me but I was somewhat successful in trying to think like a kid under 10 - imagining my nieces seeing this - and overall I enjoyed them. The design and backgrounds and color work are lovely if not close to the later Ghibli level of quality; animation is a bit choppy like most non-Disney animation I've seen from this period - I don't know early 70s Japanese stuff well enough to say how it compares. A bit sickly-sweet for sure and that theme song is both catchy and irritating.

258. Return of Hanuman (2007)
To date the lone animated credit of director Anurag Kashyap (perhaps last as well... looks like he just got #metoo'ed), this colorful brew of Indian gods and high fantasy antics and action is probably going to be received somewhat lukewarm outside of it's intended Indian audience. It assumes, much like many Greek, Roman and biblical adaptations that are much more familiar to western audiences, that there's a base-level understanding of many of the legends told here as it leaps from plot point to plot point very quickly with little explanation at times as to the reasoning behind many of the actions taken by various characters. Still I could imagine it being a fun picture for those who are familiar with what's happening at least a little.

Image
259. Nasu: Andalusia no natsu a.k.a. Nasu: Summer in Andalusia (2003)
This is a good cycling anime that is stripped to the bone. The focus is all about Pepe and his push to the finish line. Family & friends flit around the peripheral but none of that matters. Avoid if you want deep and involving dialogue-heavy character interactions. The character study is deep but very quiet. You only catch ripples across the facade of the main character as you get glances of his motivations. Based on the strength of this one, I'll be checking out he follow-up some time in the not-too-distant future.

Image
260a. Bubsy (1993)
260b. Pikmin E1-3 (2014)
261c. Pokemon Daisuki Club: 7 shorts (2014)
Took in some animated video game tie-ins. Bubsy was exactly the kind of "too cool for school" obnoxious stuff you'd expect to get churned out in the wake of Sonic the Hedgehog. It's no wonder the pilot failed. The Pikmin shorts were overseen by Shigeru Miyamoto himself and are quite charming. Their gentle hijinks remind me of things like Shaun the Sheep. My kids really liked them too. Too bad there are only three. The Pokemon Daisuki Club shorts were basically a series of animated music videos, each themed around a different pokemon, that was released periodically on Nintendo's official youtube channel. My wife thought they were pretty relentlessly stupid but my kids seemed to get a kick out of some of them, especially Slowpoke's for some reason.

Image
262. Scooby-Doo and the Goblin King (2008)
This was another solid Scooby Doo effort (that once again features Tim Curry in a voice role) with lots of sorcery and very obvious non-fake monsters and magic. It's mostly the Shaggy & Scooby show and is very heavily Halloween-themed to the point that I kinda wish I had saved it for next month.

Image
263. Mulan II (2004)
Another middling Disney sequel... sigh... So many of these sequels seem to be about a Disney princess's wedding gettin derailed from a happily ever after. I think I'm done with these things for a while....

Image
264-267. Interspecies Reviewers E1-12 (2020)
I've been curious about this one after it generated a LOT of controversy earlier this year, being pulled from Funimation simulcast and censored in several markets. Basically it's like somebody told Yuuki Ogawa, the director, 'man, Monster Musume has got to be the closest you can get to hentai and still air on Japanese TV' and Ogawa basically said 'Hold my beer.' The series takes place in a fantasy realm and follows the raunchy escapades of a human mercenary, an elf, a halfing and a fallen angel they rescued one day as they visit various species' brothels, cavort and then review their experiences from 1 to 10. And that's pretty much it. There's almost no character development (other than the angel getting pervier as the series progresses) and no real major stakes beyond potential dangers that certain succu-girls (the show's name for the different species' prostitutes) pose to certain characters like the salamander girl who emanates extreme heat and the pure blood succubi that drain the actual life force from bodies as they get it on. While it was intermittently slightly funny at times, I honestly don't recommend this to anyone really unless you just want to see the creativity on display of the sheer variety of different perversions at play here and the thought put into them (like the episode centered around egg-laying species and the fetish arising from that and how it's mainly popular with snake men and mermen). It is near constant VERY graphic sex scenes and I am really surprised this ever aired on TV anywhere.

Very nice indeed, but your timing is a bit off. Couldn't you have seen this during the TDF? :D
The sequel is on the same level btw, but watching them too close together may take away some of the fun.

Hard to choose between this and Grave of the Fireflies, but those two films are by far my favorite Ghibli films (and the reason why I prefer Takahata over Miyazaki). The lightness of this film is amazing. Many of the vignettes are so very simple, but so warm and joyful. The TV remote battle is probably one of my favorites.

Damn it's hard to go further to the opposite ends of the spectrum, content-wise, than those two! One of the lightest and one of the darkest. I'd have to see Fireflies again - I did really like it, but something didn't quite put it over the top for me; and it's been 12-15 years and I've become at least a little more knowledgeable about anime since then.

If forced to pick between the two I'd likely pick Takahata as well though it would be very close. I still have a few to see from each though, and I've yet to see anything more than once, or any of their TV work, so I'm sure my opinion could change a bit eventually.
