Am I the only person in the top 3 for this Challenge who has actually been enjoying it? And do I get extra points for that?

All kidding aside, this Challenge has been amazing for me: two newly seen films in my top movies list, two other newly seen films added to my 500<400 ballot, plenty of other 7s and 8s, a new director in my top 200 directors list, a rewatch of my third favourite film of all time, which still stacked up. Really, I've been simply loving this Challenge. Very few genuinely bad films seen too.

Not in the top 3 but I had a good time. Russia is still not my favourite film country but I've seen plenty that I liked (and especially enjoyed the non-Russian Soviet movies) even if the film festival and other obligation prevented me from seeing a lot that I would have liked to watch, especially in 500<400. Only two TSPDT movies remain now (Soy Cuba - one of my most anticipated movies and Burnt by the Sun). A successful month for me

1. Strike (1925)
The experimental formalism and cinematic daring of this silent classic are so impressive and overwhelming in their brio that it's impossible not to enjoy this movie. Not every shot works, but the entire movie brims with unexpected delights and startling montages.

2. Nine Days of One Year (1962)
Solemn love triangle among scientists involved in research on nuclear physics. It's a pity that the love triangle is not nearly as interesting as the science, which serves mainly as background. Still, I'm impressed that a Soviet movie would even admit the possibility of a nuclear accident at this time. Certainly a product of the Khrushchev thaw.

3. Welcome, or No Trespassing (1964)
Fairly humorous satire of life at a young pioneer camp.

4. Officers (1971)
Life in one Red Army family from the 1920s to the 1960s. The action/war scenes are poorly shot, and the sentimental scenes are not given enough time and attention. Trying to fit forty years into a 90-minute movie necessarily led to a fast pace which skipped over aspects of the story that could have been developed for much greater impact. That being said, there's one charming scene that really captivated me, during which a man is traveling with his very pregnant wife on a train. Might be worth viewing for that scene alone.

This was also a very nice finale as I discovered one other great film, and got a really good final film as well. Nivce to see the shifts from so many 4s and 5s early in the challenge, to loads of 7s. Anyhow:

44. Komunaris chibukhi / The Communard's Pipe (1929, Kote Mardjanishvili) 8/10
A picture of the Paris Commune that manage to capture the hunger, chaos and hope of the time, while centering the story around the young son of one of the Communards. The play on the republic, and the reactions of the upper classes are great, with a nice amount of snark and dismissal - while the ending also packs a hard punch.

Some beautiful cinematography here, and I enjoyed the dreamlike sequences, but the rest of the film is simply flat and tiring, bogging us down in needless/tiresome beaurocratic/expert conversations.

There is something really wonderful about how so many of these 70s mini-epic dramas are shot. The early evocative, almost dreamlike scenes of excess are absolutely wonderful. The story itself is solid, as is many of the performances, and it really had a good shot at greatness.

Two of these are on the IMDb shorts top 50, the other two are close. I think it's clear that Soviet animated shorts are getting some of the same (mostly) local vote-stuffing and promoting that Indian and Turkish features have, though overall I'm a *little* more impressed with these fake news titles than most of the crappy Bollywood and Istanbulywood titles that pop up on the top 250. But not so much that I'd put them on any lists myself. The Karlson short is my favorite here, mostly because I love the charcoal pencil backgrounds (even if they are static) and because it has a little moodiness to it - the kid's imaginary friend is what causes all the problems, but if you look at it from an adult POV you see a potentially suicidal, depressive child. a) and c) are two in a series about Fedor and his talking cat and dog and are both fairly cute and charming, the c) has a weird bit of propaganda stuck right in the middle. And Umka is the most beautifully animated of this quartet, about a young polar bear being taught some things about the world by his mother.

And that's all for me, would have liked to do more but it just wasn't in the cards. Thanks for hosting, clem!
