Winner of the Lola Award for Best film in its day, this foreign look at conservative 50s Brooklyn boasts some exceptional performances and memorable characters from a cross-dressing youngster, to a closeted older man, to a moody overprotective father to a prostitute involved in a racket in which she and her friends rob her clients. The movie feels uneven, however, as it jumps between its various plot threads. Good insight into union culture though.

Based on a successful Broadway musical, this film expectedly boasts some excellent songs. The performances though vary in effectiveness and none of the characters are especially likeable or fun to follow around. The melodramatic way that the adult characters keep jumping between potential lovers soon grows tiresome, while a neglected daughter torn between her mother and dismissive grandmother could have done with a lot more screen time.

Apparently intended as some sort of political allegory, any such depth is cut short by the scarce details and dialogue. The film is endlessly intriguing though due to its offbeat set-up, even feeling precursory to The Wicker Man at times with outsider alarmed at the mindless complacency of local children and deterred by bizarre local customs. The whole thing feels rather long and drawn out, but the ending at least packs a bit of punch.

1. Der Fan (1982) — a.k.a. The Fan 8-/10 (Germany)
The current FotW and a recommendation from me. I didn't look at the genre tags before watching so I was a bit taken by surprise by the last 20 minutes and its change in tone (especially compared to the first half of the film). At the same time, the tone stays consistent on a higher level in the film's minimalist approach. As an interesting side note, the actress who plays the obsessed fan (Désirée Nosbusch) was herself a Teenie star at that time, being a (co-)host for several shows. (Also she had already had an unpleasant encounter with Klaus Kinski who molested her. While preparing for an interview with Kinski, he locked her into his house in the woods from which she had to flee via the balcony)

2. Kreuzweg (2014) 9-/10(Germany)

Rapt seems to be a France/Swiss co-production with both languages (French & German) spoken extensively in the film. Probably just depends on how sol's feeling today whether he'd allow it ;) Journey of Hope was Switzerland's actual official submission to the Academy Awards (and ended up winning best foreign film that year as well), so I mean, if Switzerland themselves thought it counted, I would imagine this challenge would too...

Flavo is right on Reise der Hoffnung - all Swiss submissions for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language are eligible for this Challenge.

I'd also trust him on Rapt too; not that I have done extensive research, but it seems to be generally be regarded as a co-production and as flavo mentioned, the presence of German dialogue in the mix makes it more likely to be a genuine co-production.

03. Es geschah am hellichten Tag, by Ladislao Vajda (1958) 9/10 - Switzerland

I loved this film. The dryness of the direction, the five star casting, the music, even the child acts well...

This James Bond variant gets off to a solid enough start with fancy 007 style opening credits and music; the initial assassination attempt (the entire crew of a plane that the woman is travelling on parachute out) is also insanely over-the-top. The overall film though is not quite as so electric. The organisation's bizarre experiments mostly linger in the backdrop, the assassination attempts are too ridiculous to take seriously and lead oft seems silly.

Just to be clear, I am not complaining - just commenting.

I too would like to see Swiss and Austrian Official Lists, but I don't think List Officialdom explains Germany's dominance. I mean, not all of us only watch Official Checks when competing in the Challenges. :D But of course when the person winning the Challenge limits himself to just Official Checks... ;)

The pronounced placing of Vladimir Nabokov's name is interesting and something I keep forgetting to mention when promoting the film. That's the Academy Award nominated writer of Lolita in case anybody is wondering.

This little-seen drama from Werner Herzog fits in well with the rest of Herzog's filmography, focused on two obsessed individuals while showcasing landscapes rarely depicted on film. As a narrative though, the movie is far less impressive. Some haunted jaundiced flashbacks aside, what exists between the mountain climbing shots is nothing short of pure melodrama with too much voice-over narration that spells everything out.
