Yamazaki's latest is quite the surprise. He leaves behind the big budget fantasy worlds and focuses a on a bit of Japanese War history. Don't expect a typical war film though, while there two or three action scenes, this film is really about math, budgets and political meetings. Not the most glamorous subjects. The film revolves around the production of a new battle ship. In order to get it made, a budget has to be approved, but the opponents suspect that the proposed budget is an incredible underestimation. They hire a young but skilled mathematician to help them figure out the actual cost of the ship, but he has no idea about ships, nor politics. It's a small miracle that Yamazaki actually manages a couple of tense scenes, because the subject matter is just incredibly dry. The film relies quite heavily on dialogues and the important meeting where everything is decided spans almost half the film. It's hardly Yamazaki's best film and I doubt there's a big market for this, but considering the circumstances, he still did a pretty decent job.

Tenet is on 413 checks now, but like I reported earlier, I had the 366th check earlier today. It's a typical Nolan movie. All the main characters seem to only talk in exposition. But this is only a problem at the start. Once the main concepts are explained in detail towards the audience it gets less in the way. The visuals and audio are also trademark Nolan. What works is that the actors are strong in their roles and that the concepts feel fresh and intriguing enough to overcome all my irritations with Nolan. I watched it at EYE in 70mm format with a corona-full house, was very much entertained and it felt nice to see something spectacular and big again.

La vida util was a decidedly smaller start this morning. Very nicely shot, but mostly static ode to a cinematek and the small world of arthouse cinephiles, that turns into a bittersweet (almost) comedy at the end that also feels as an ode to cinema (in a more classic Hollywood mode maybe).
Niwemang is an Iranian roadmovie about an old musician. It turns into something almost transcendental at the end, but the tone is mostly light throughout. Very nice landscapes and at the end a small role for Golshifteh Farahani, which is why I sought this one out. Had seen only one other film of this director before and it hadn't impressed me much, but this one was a very positive surprise.
I rounded off all three movies at a 7.5 but gave both Tenet and Niwemang 4-stars... so they are actually around a small 7.8 for me (but I always round of at .5 on the 0-10 scale)

59. Frank & Lola (2016) 157 checks- 3.5* by Matthew Ross

A very pleasant discovery. I'd never heard of this film before, but Shannon and Poots have been building up impressive oeuvres and the combination of mystery and romance isn't exactly very common nowadays. So I figured it would be a worth a shot, turns out that was the right call. Shannon (Frank) plays a skilled but reclusive chef, Poots (Lola) plays a young and careless woman who knocks him off his boots. While they look like the perfect couple, things turn sour when Lola cheats on Frank and drags him into a web of lies and deceit. The more Frank tries to figure out what's going on, the deeper he falls. Performances are strong, but it's Matthew Ross' direction that gives the film the necessary polish. The cinematography is stylish, together with the soundtrack it creates a mysterious, sultry atmosphere that forms the basis of the film's success. And while the third act feels like it could slip into cheap thriller territory, Ross keeps the film on the rails and delivers a perfect finale. Very nice.

This sordid grindhouse poliziotteschi features quite a lot of motorbike stunt work and chases. The directing feels a little cut-rate but it is rarely boring.

This bizarre, surrealist industrial noise social horror film based loosely on the writings of William S. Burroughs (who also appears in the film) concerns a fast food employee that discovers he can control the populace by manipulating and distorting muzak in increasingly strange ways. With a soundtrack by Soft Cell, I feel like this one would be a major contender for 500< 400 if it were more widely seen by those who may typically turn their noses up at genre fare. At times it plays out much more like an experimental film than a horror movie with reality bending to the will of abstract sonic frequencies.

This is basically a compilation film that condenses the Gatchaman series' first major story arc down to two hours. The storytelling definitely has a more epic feel than many of the more kid-friendly anime of the '70s, and it's easy to see how Gatchaman grew a big fanbase with solid writing, bright costume designs and crisp animation (the blu-ray actually looks fantastic).

Well, this is a weird one. A German couple recruits a visitor to train and discipline their son, an idiot man-child that they desire to groom to be the president of the United States. It has a very odd black comedy tone that feels somewhere between Jean Pierre Jeunet and Lars Von Trier, at times sinister, whimsical and a little trollish.

This wasn't bad and has something of a similar realist fairytale vibe to it to Demy's prior Donkey Skin. Visually it just fell flat for me though given Demy's past with such vibrant films like Umbrellas of Cherbourg and Young Girls of Rochefort.

Slightly better than the original, but only by a small margin. The animation is a step up from the first one, then again there are 15 years between the two films, so it would've been really bad if that hadn't been the case. Apart from that, these films are pretty much on the same level. The plot is extremely basic and hardly worth bothering with. Golgo isn't a very interesting character, neither is Queen Bee. They're just simple stereotypes who lack personality. You'd expect the action to make up for that in a film like this, but even the action scenes are very static and lifeless. It just comes off as very cheap and derivative, with little to no redeeming qualities. At least the film is short and while it's clear corners were cut wherever possible, the animation shows at least a small glimpse of the talent hiding behind this film. That's not enough to make it an enjoyable experience though.

27. Agantuk (1991, Satyajit Ray) 6/10 [321 checks]

I liked Satyajit Ray's last movie but it was a bit predictable and the more philosophical second half takes too long to arrive, the dialogues that show the hesitation of the hosts to welcome their guest are too long and uninteresting.
Moreover Ray was very sick during the shooting and it's noticeable, the "magic" is not quite there.
But I left the movie with a pinch in the heart and it was worth it.

After watchign "In Search of the Last Action Heroes", I've been on an action kick, and here are the two (of four) I've watched that were eligible for any of the challenges. Honor and Glory is about an FBI agent and her reporter sister who were investigating and trying to stop the sale of a nuclear detonation device, as brokered by a corrupt banker/martial arts expert. Tons of martial arts fighting made it engaging enough and watchable, though the rest of the film was pretty terrible. I wanted to watch this because I'd never seen a Cynthia Rothrock film, and wanted to see her in something (she was a major player in that In Search of... doc). She was awesome, and I see why she was so popular - I'll definitely check out more of her films.

Hurricane Heist is exactly what it sounds like - a bunch of nefarious hicks from Alabama break into the US Treasury to steal $600m marked for destruction, using a Cat 5 Hurricane as cover. It's silly and over the top, but the special effects were pretty decent and it was mostly non-stop action. Definitely nonsensical, but it was at least fun and a pleasant enough film to watch. Like if you're desperate for a sequel to Twister, this might keep the withdrawal symptoms at bay for a bit. Over Bias Warning: This would have been substantially better if everyone didn't have a ridiculous southern drawl.

Zerzura even goes into Jodorowski-esque territory towards the end... too bad the budget and the film making skills were not quite up to thát level, but I'm a sucker for anything with magic cities and glowing swords. And put that in an authentic desert landscape and I'm sold!

A pretty derivative horror flick. I've already seen the exact same story countless times before, which is a problem when a film is presented as a mystery. Five minutes in and I had a pretty good idea of what was going on, even though the characters didn't find out until the very end. This is a pretty straight-forward genre flick though, so execution is key. Sadly Kingdom Come doesn't score any points there either. Performances are really drab, the film looks dead cheap and the kills are poor and unoriginal. Sager simply goes through the motions, seemingly content with delivering bottom shelf genre filler. The film's only redeeming element is the creature design. Maybe not 100% convincing, but at least the monsters looked pretty freaky. That's hardly enough to warrant a recommendation, so unless you're really starved for horror films there's not much reason to give this film a try. Pretty poor.

--- This Carnival (1946) was probable better than how I ended-up liking it. Production wise it was fine, classy even, for backstage show piece. But there was something about the fuzziness of Cockney show biz that didn't lure me in.

77. It Shouldn't Happen to a Dog (1946, Herbert I. Leeds) - 5/10 - 5th check
--- It Shouldn't Happen to a Dog (1946) is one where they tried to hook-up Carole Landis with Allyn Joslyn. Landis, one of the most gorgeous women of 1940s cinema. Joslyn, one of those effective as the annoying 3rd wheel, the sap you want to see knocked-out. Let's just say this pairing didn't work. Not even for a comedy snooper like this. That's not to say this wasn't silly fun, for this was a good time waster. I'm just puzzled at their attempts at making Joslyn a leading guy and giving him ladies WAY beyond his reach.

--- Albert Dekker tries to make this crime puzzle work, but this whole production was too basic to thrill the mind. Routine investigation, some sidekick laughs, and the rest pretty forgettable. I guess the effort from the actors were there to give it a pass, but nothing more.

--- Sometimes my wife's movie choices are more obscure than my own. Here's Peter Pandesal (1976). A filipino movie barely anyone had touched starring one of the most successful child actors in the history of the country, Niño Muhlach, early in his career and who would have been five at the time. Like with nearly all movies from the Philippines, this is one hell of a mixed bag. And that in more ways than one. Quality varies greatly, from cringy scenes dragging way too long, to some of the most awesome B-movie moments you'll ever experience. Just watch as the 5-year-old gets magical powers and starts kicking and throwing cars at the bad guys! The co-star is Philippines very own Bruce Lee, Ramon Zamora, who was the main star of the pinoy martial arts flicks in the 70s & 80s, The action is quite good at times, but don't go expecting masterful direction in any of the scenes. Just love it for the amazing randomness this picture possess.
