While the plot takes a while to ignite (with the revelation of what their new pot dealer is up to), Nadia Litz is excellent in the role and the dynamics between the three main characters simmer. As one of the once-revolutionaries turned scavenger, Don McKeller waxes poetic about the Black Panthers and counterculture while at the same time rambling on about the very capitalist pleasures of finding "junk" to sell for a profit. Weak ending though.

Fun Fact: While I have been participating in the Official Challenges run here for over three and a half years, this is the first time that I have ever cracked 100 watches in a single challenge. Glad that I was able to do with a worthwhile film at that. :)

A deliciously weird and offbeat Friday the 13th episode about a man who stumbles upon a way to turn his dying dog into his wife who has walked out on him. Not everything about the plot necessarily adds up, but with some great transformation effects and such eerie bits a a dog with glowing blue eyes, this is very palatable. Micki and the crew are also definite supporting players here, with the protagonist with all his oddities aptly allowed centre focus.

I appreciate the encouragement, guys - but I don't know if I'll be able to fit in enough to win this. All I can do is try and see whether blueboybob begins watching unofficial Canadian films this month because it's too finicky to work out which Official Checks to watch for the Run the Director Challenge. :ermm:

The premise of this Friday the 13th episode sounded okay with Micki, Ryan and Jack all eerily coincidentally revisited by close friends from their past, but too much is revealed too early on about what exactly is going on and why they have returned. The episode also follows a rule that the series is yet to break: all of the weakest episodes are the the non-standalone ones that revolve around Micki and co rather than other folks experiencing horrors.

27. The Fruit Machine (2018) ON-en - 8.5ish - First to check

This film is excellent, yet both heart-breaking and infuriating. It tells of the government-run program to ferret out and dispose of (yes, they actually used the term "disposal" in their official documents) queer people in the civil service and military. Hearing the stories of what these men and women had to go through, especially the lesbians in the military, is gut-wrenching. Their stories need to be told, so that people can understand how sometimes it's not the enemy beyond our borders worth worrying about, it's the enemy within we should heed and stand up to. Sadly, traces of this behaviour is still prevalent with the incidents of rape and sexual abuse in the military, and the inability of the police to effectively stop a serial killer in the gaybourhood of Toronto a few years ago due to widely perceived lack of interest. The notion of those in power are only there to serve and protect themselves and ensure they remain in power is sadly being reinforced more and more often these days.

With one week to go, the pressure is on! Sol is gunning for blueboybob for the top spot, and both have crossed 100 points! But the race for third is also tight, with Mario Gaborović and Traveller trading places back and forth. Then we have OldAle1, jdidaco, Fergenaprido, and maxwelldeux all looking to exceed 31 points (i.e. 1 point a day) for this challenge, with our two tv watchers rounding out the top ten. Will this be our top ten at the end of the month too?

Yeah, I think you might end up Best in Show for the bonus challenges by the end of the next week, especially since I have needed to gear my focus towards films that I actually have a (low) IMDb rating of late. :unsure: Thanks for keeping things interesting with the bonus challenges. :thumbsup:

Oh, and if it helps, I don't plan to watch anything more from Canada that isn't in English, French or Bilingual, so that might be an easy column for you to win, whereas I still have a few Underseen titles in my watch-list. :ph43r:

There are a few nifty ideas here, from a killer girl as the result of cancer research performed on human rather than animal subjects, to some animal activists getting a comeuppance for trespassing, to the idea of feeding on healthy human organs as a grisly possible medical cure. All of this is, however, squandered on a very simple thriller plot where the protagonists are hunted down by an unrelenting killer. None of the characters are likeable either.

Haha, yeah, I have a few language films lined up as well, but first I need to finish 1950s, 2010s, and PEI (which I have lined up too). I also have a number of underseen films at the ready, but I'm also trying to catch films on Mubi before they expire, so that eats into my challenge time (plus the constant buffering due to my connection wastes actual time). I don't know if I'll catch you overall, but I'd at least like to cross 50 bonus points.

Possessed by the spirit of a young woman who died in the house she now occupies, an indie filmmaker contemplates whether or not to have the spirit exorcised here. The filmmakers get a few spooky images from the fact that the dead woman's spirit can only be perceived if others stare into her eyes, while playing around with green, pink and red lighting filters. Alas, with no real conflict or any sense of urgency there is not much of a story here.

While the metaphor is obvious and unsubtle here and the ending is weak with too much left unresolved, this is a thrilling and suspenseful home invasion movie while it lasts. The antagonists' Halloween masks are appropriately creepy and the architecture of the home is cool with all of the endless extra rooms making it more eerie during the invasion since they could be nearly anywhere. This bears a very similar vibe to You're Next if less clever/twisted.

Very literally titled, this involves a bunch of a bikini-clad college students stalked at a gas station by a maniac who preserves his victims' bodies on ice. The killer's motivations are unclear though, his back-story is never properly explained, and while William Jarand looks the part, it is a very one-note role. The film also missteps by making most of deaths happen off-screen. The characters are better than average though and it begins well at least.

I hope I'm not keeping you from watching them - in some cases it might really be for the better however. :D I'm not the biggest fan of Dolan (though I don't hate him either; rated two of his films 7, two 6, and Tom at the Farm 3; then again, it has been a long time since I've seen them), but this was for me the weakest entry so far. While technically surely not bad, the story fell flat for me and there was no emotional attachment to one of the characters or any interest in one of the themes displayed.

I just went back and looked at the films you rated, and realized the only other one was Elephant Song, but I got that confused with Fire Song. So it turns out you're not hating my watchlisted films, you're only hating films I've already seen :P
Though we both saw Next of Kin for the first time and enjoyed it.

With those ratings, it's obvious why it's on your watchlist and why you should see it regardless of how I rated it. :D Same goes for Elephant Song - where he plays one of the leads - which I only rated so "low" because it left me disappointed after the ending. Next of Kin was really one of the highlights this month in the Canadian challenge next to the discovery of Mettler for me. I still have three of Egoyan's movies lined up for this month (Family Viewing, The Adjuster and Calendar), so I'm curious if these can convince me as much.

Yeah, I'll probably get to it next week, and maybe Mathias & Maxime too. Elephant Song can wait, I'm more interested in Dolan as a director than as an actor.

For Egoyan, I'm surprised at how much his films keep surprising me, if that makes sense.

For a non-standalone episode (i.e. heavy focus on Micki and her crew), this is a surprisingly decent Friday the 13th episode, focusing on a mysterious but charming actor and a makeup kit that he values a little too highly. While it is obvious what is going on, the episode wisely shies away from showing us the actor's true appearance where possible, and he actually comes off as quite human in his desperation rather than greedy or half-mad with power.

A family is terrorised by the cabin owner after he becomes obsessed with the couple's daughter in this thriller that is never quite as lurid as it sounds. Working with a low budget, the film is a more a collection of cat-and-mouse moments than a series of grisly attacks and counterattacks. The filmmakers actually drum up a fair bit of suspense though and Frank Savage is well cast as the antagonist who varies from sane to maniacal from scene to scene.

Separated from her boyfriend for the first time in years, a young woman begins to suspect that she is being stalked (could it all just be in her mind?) in this acute portrait of heightened paranoia. The scenes of her being stalked are well done with the figures barely visible, and could there be more than one stalker? The film provides its answers a little soon (several minutes before the protagonist catches on) but this is generally solid while it lasts.

The sci-fi premise here leaves a wealth of unanswered questions, some of which may be best left unanswered - and the comedy varies in effectiveness. At its best, the film is darkly comic. The second scene (at a drive-in movie theatre) is excellent with much black comedy from the patrons who are either too engrossed in the movie - or each other - to realise that a shootout is going on around them. Most of the humour is goofy and childish though.

Those three in the middle I've highlighted are the ones I saw first (15-20 years ago), and probably deserve a rewatch. And I've been putting off Felicia's Journey for no good reason; that and Speaking Parts are his last "essential" films I need to see, though I'm interested in Remember and Guest of Honour as well. Adoration is the only film of his that's missed with me so far.
The Sweet Hereafter and Exotica are the ones I’ve seen prior to the challenge too, though too many years ago as I don’t remember much from either of those (both rated at 7/10 however). Family Viewing is now the first one I deviate a bit from one of your ratings; it didn’t impress me as much as I wanted to. Still looking forward to the other two based on your ratings.

Also, had to look it up, but Death Warrant is another American JCVD film that is erroneously marked as Canadian on imdb and thus was included in my "official" list. Maybe it was because JCVD plays a Quebecois RCMP officer. :shrug: Fixing it now, but of course it's still eligible for you and everyone else for this challenge. Not that you recommend it. :lol:

Canada's answer to Die Hard (well, almost), this action thriller has a high school student and teacher climbing through air conditioning vents and walking around barefoot as they ward off a bank robber set on retrieving his loot that the teenager thoughtlessly stole and stashed at school. The high school setting is excellent, but a number of twists and turns are also easy to see coming and the strained father/son relationship frankly feels strained.
