Clint once again has some nifty shootouts, most notably a diversion bit in an armchair, however, it is Lee Van Cleef who dominates the screen here, oozing charisma and often slyly smiling in suggestive ways. He is a pretty interesting counterpoint character, yet a sudden ulterior motive revelation near the end feels very tacked-on. Clocking in at over two hours, the film is also too leisurely paced to ever match the intensity of A Fistful of Dollars.

21. UNE FEMME MARIÉE. SUITE DE FRAGMENTS D'UN FILM TOURNÉ EN 1964 (Godard, 1964) — Well, it's Godard in the sixties, brilliant and eager to experiment with film in order to get out of it more than a medium to illustrate conventional stories, he interviews his actors, inserts underwear ads, plays with minimalistic close-ups, background noise or typography, rotates 90º the camera and thinks about women, love, pleasure, intelligence, memory, cinema, birth, advertisement, etc. 7/10

1. Liu yue xin niang / The June Bride (Huang Tang, 1960)

Image

(see the China challenge for my thoughts on Grace Chang, and the three late 50s films I watched before this one)

Liu yue xin niang gives us Grace as the daughter of a struggling businessman, all set to marry her childhood sweetheart upon return to HK after a business trip, but getting involved with a couple of other men - one of them Roy Chiao, again - and having to make hard decisions. This seems to be attempting a screwball sort of attitude but really doesn't succeed. Again some nice songs, and also some good outdoor location work including a panoramic view of and from Victoria Peak, but it all ends up exactly where you'd expect it to in the end.

2. Ching nu yu hun / The Enchanting Shadow (Han Hsiang Li, 1960)

Lovely Shaw Brothers ghost story, in which a wandering scholar who takes refuge in a supposedly-haunted abandoned temple complex, befriending a swordsman and eventually running into an enchanting young lady (Betty Loh Ti) after hearing her distant music. The scene in which the first encounter occurs is really quite magical; of course - it shouldn't be any kind of spoiler - she turns out to be a ghost, and eventually his life is imperiled by this relationship. Beautiful color and sets - if you love the Shaws' usual production design like I do. This one isn't in Shawscope like their more famous later films but even in a 1.66 frame the feeling of space and depth is nicely conveyed. Not great or anything but a bit of a departure from what I've seen from this era.

3. Qian jiao bai mei / Les Belles (Ching Doe, 1961)

And the third of that trio of star actresses I mentioned in my first review, Dai Lin, finally appears in this rather dull Shawscope musical. This is primarily a dance musical and Doe makes pretty good use of the wide frame for a variety of numbers - this is closer to what I think of as a typical musical, from Hollywood or elsewhere, than the other films I've seen so far in this challenge. But while the production design and framing are good, the dances themselves aren't all that interesting nor are they choreographed with a tenth of the quality you'd see from, say, Gene Kelly, and the storyline - star dancer Dai and troupe manager Peter Chen Ho hate each other, but of course melt into each others' arms by the end - is really tedious. Worth seeing for the use of color, some of the staging, and the cool mid-century modern furniture in the lavish hotel rooms that make up a big chunk of the later scenes, but that's about it.

4. Victim (Basil Dearden, 1961)

TCM. Melville Farr (Dirk Bogarde) an up-and-coming young lawyer, has his life turned around when a young man, a known homosexual, winds up dead, and it becomes apparent that there is a blackmail scheme afoot - and Farr may end up one of the victims. This is one of those films that can't help but be "dated" because the rules and laws around it have all changed (though they took some time) - and of course because the tool of the blackmailer is pretty different in our instant-internet era. But it's a solid film that manages for the most part to tread the line between sensationalism and watering down it's theme - that of men forced into criminality to live the lives they were born to; and here is where it really does seem progressive; while certainly there are characters who react with loathing and fear, the notion that being gay is just a normal way to be is also stated on more than one occasion by more than one character, and it's clear that's the feeling of the filmmakers, including of course Bogarde whose sexuality was fairly widely known by this point, at least in the industry. The very end may seem a slight cop-out, but I think it's probably a fairly realistic ending for that time (and even for our own, in some less enlightened areas).

5. Bai she zhuan / Madame White Snake (Feng Yueh, 1962)

Dai Lin again, as the spirit of the White Snake, who comes to earth to take human form, falling in love with the man who saved her in another life, only to suffer for trying to help him. This has some interesting elements involving the attitudes towards magic of the priests vs the people - who are happy to get the miraculous healing treatments that Bai Suzhen, the disguised White Snake, creates. Can't say I got all of it but the film as a whole is a nice mix of romantic tragedy, fantasy, music, and even some martial arts - there's a particularly cool scene where our heroine takes on a bunch of warriors in the celestial world where she's gone to get a plant that will revive her husband.

6. Wutei jiemei / Two Stage Sisters (Jin Xie, 1964)

More tragedy and melodrama in the form of a story of a peasant girl who is taken in by a kindly travelling opera company leader, and raised alongside his own daughter as they move about the countryside in the 1930s. Eventually after their father's death they end up in Shanghai and become huge successes, but attitudes money and revolutionary politics eventually divide them. This is one of those films that - after it's start in poverty and ignorance (Chunhua, the country girl, can't read or write initially) becomes lighter and more "fun", before diverging into darker territory again in the last act. There's definitely more than a little bit of propaganda here, as one sister goes along the (eventually) approved Party path while the other slides into decadence and Western values, but it doesn't really hit you over the head with it apart from one song at the end of the film (which isn't even in the version I watched - it's a separate extra; apparently there was controversy over it's inclusion). Despite some issues with the politics - and little things like the fact that we see almost no aging in a film that takes place over 15 years or so - it's pretty moving and powerful in the end.

22. THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE (Guest, 1961) — Timely disaster film about nuclear weapons and climate disruption (London looks definitely better in the rain) as seen from the press point of view, action sequences are rather poor (a few suggestive matte paintings and some weather stock footage), the rest, dealing with professional and family affairs in parallel, is pretty good though. 7/10

The choreography is impressive here and the camera nicely often moves with the fighters. There is also a fun bit involving booby-trapped furniture. The film is let down though by an overly complex plot that requires voice-over narration to provide several minutes of exposition, and yet which ultimately amounts to a lot of a swordplay and not much else. There is also a ridiculous contrivance of a group of men completely oblivious to cross-dressing.

23. CARRY ON... UP THE KHYBER (Thomas, 1968) — A revolt in one of the provinces of British India caused by the undergarment of a soldier sounds like an (at least) intriguing starting point for a comedy, too bad half of the times its humour relies on gags, innuendos, jokes, puns, etc. of sexual nature, otherwise the cast is quite funny and the storyline dynamic. 5/10

Various drag queens discuss gender politics and the way they are treated in society as they prepare for a beauty pageant in this insightful documentary. This is fascinating both for showing their extreme transformations (with the right makeup and wigs) as well as for diving deep into issues such how they do not actually want sex change operations, and how this confuses many who they meet. The film feels incomplete tho with its final reel revelations.

8. Nattvardsgästerna / Winter Light (Ingmar Bergman, 1963) 9/10

Likely a 10/10 on a rewatch, stunning and unlike anything else made from Sweden up until this point. Masterpiece.

9. Portrait of Jason (Shirley Clarke, 1967) 5/10

Powerful because I haven't seen many things this queer that is as old as this. It feels very exploitative at times though, or perhaps downright ugly considering the ending. But it is hard to tell how bad one should feel. Maybe both the film and its protagonist are just messing with me, that this is all a performance, and that this is actually managing to spin many plates at once and that I am the fool.

10. Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Take One (William Greaves, 1968) 7/10

Speaking of filmatic plate spinning... Fun exploration of how films are made. Also works great as a historical document of a time period in the way the cameras capture ordinary people moving in and out of different roles at the "set", in the way films are mentally constructed, and in the mood in the air that everything can and will be set free. The homeless person (if he truly is that, we both can and can't believe anything here) brings in the nihilism in the end, arguing that there is no freedom (despite having just been given the freedom to participate (or was this, too, robbing him of a freedom in the moment?)). Hard film to put in a box, which is great.

24. ROZMARNÉ LÉTO (Menzel, 1968) — Good ingredients (relaxed rural setting, vivid colours, allegorical story and characters, philosophical conversations), I should have enjoyed it more but something, in addition to the confusing subtitles, I can't determine (maybe meaning too specific for a Czech audience) made it a tedious watch most of the time. 5/10

15. The Eleanor Roosevelt Story (1965) - 6/10 - 105 Checks - 1 Official List - 6.4/10 Average Rating

Richard Kaplan documents the life of one of America's most influential first ladies. Orphaned at age 10, Anna Eleanor Roosevelt marries her fifth cousin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, in 1905. His election in 1932 allows Eleanor to step up to national prominence, battling for civil rights and visiting troops during World War II. After her husband's death, Roosevelt continues to advocate for human rights at the U.N., proving herself one of America's great humanitarians.

If I watched nothing but films from 1961 for the rest of the month, it would tie with 1968 for first place. But I don't really think I would want to do that.

25. LES GRANDES VACANCES (Girault, 1967) — A restless (and funny as usual, at least for my taste) Louis de Funès in pursuit of his son that has run away with a vivacious exchange student, provides a good occasion to visit beautiful French landscapes along the Seine (from Paris to Le Havre), taste the delicious (?) British cuisine or admire the cars (from Mini to Rolls-Royce) and colourful fashion of the sixties. 7/10

05. The Curse of the Fly, by Don Sharp (1965) 4/10

Too slow, too long, ridiculous at times... The people who banned Gone with the Wind must be kept away from this one, they might not recover...

A good plot, a great gothic atmosphere, and scary statues any fan of the Wax Museum will enjoy...

07. Night of the Eagle, by Sidney Hayers (1962) 8/10

A good fantastic story, with a few strong ideas and scenes.
