Wow... What was this? Lots of funny moments, but I feel like I'm missing the context to truly understand this. I'm too far removed from it (both in time and location) to truly appreciate this. But it was entertaining.

161. Jackass 3D (2010)
Well, this was pretty relentlessly stupid and gross, but it really embraces it. Much of it plays out like a more R-rated version of the show. I think the sweat cocktail even made me a little nauseous... Honestly the only parts that made me laugh were the more random, absurdist things like the waiter getting blown away by a jet engine while bring food to some fine diners on a runway and the bit where the really fat guy leaves his dog with a guy standing outside a store and a fat little person dressed exactly the same walks out a minute later saying 'thanks for watching my dog' with the guy just sitting there looking confused.


162. The World According to Garp (1982)
This was an interesting one kind of like if Dave Eggars were plunked down into the middle of Forrest Gump. Robin Williams is quite good and really flexes his range as an actor for the first time that I can recall (did he have a major more dramatic role before this?). It's still funny in places but the humor is more driven from how Garp reacts to his atypical upbringing and his mother's extreme and identity-defining feminism.


163. La poison (1951)
I liked this dark comedy of a man who plans out and murders his shrew of his a wife and blackmails his lawyer into helping him beat the rap. This is definitely Michel Simon's movie, taking a conniving murderer and making him surprisingly likable and somewhat sympathetic.


164. At War with the Army (1950)
Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin team up in this military farce carrying on the tradition of films like Buck Privates. Lewis is oddly restrained for much of the movie and Martin is pretty relentlessly smug and unlikable, constantly complaining about his desk job. The script is kind of a shiftless mess with characters careening in and out of the narrative somewhat randomly. Still, it does have some funny moments amidst the nonsense.

This is one of those movies that seems wildly polarizing. Either you get on that absurdist David Wain wavelength and laugh your head off, or it's a black hole of comedy from whence nothing funny escapes. WHICH ONE ARE YOU!?!?

David Wain is hit or miss for me, but They Came Together was mainly great. I only have one or two reservations about this one.

The first Abbott and Costello film I've seen. I only came upon it by accident after meaning to download the 1956 film of the same name. The duo investigate a Nazi conspiracy secretly operating through public radio broadcasts. Once the plot got going I started to like it more, it was the Warner Bros-esque cartoon violence and stunts that punctuate the story that I liked most though. On the other hand, the shrieking, imbecile antics of Costello often at the centre of the stunts was insufferable, a man trying way too hard to be funny.

Two present-day volunteers of average intelligence are roped by the military into being frozen in suspended animation for a year, only for them to remain frozen for 500 years and then released into a society that's evolved a far lower average IQ and in which they are now comparative geniuses. It's a film I've always ignored with the vague impression of it being one of those bottom rung Sandleresque affairs, but that's not the case, it's wittier and more serious than that. The laughs come regularly, particularly in the various verbal manglings and malapropisms, and the humour works best when it's recognisable in today's world. The main downside was that the jokes got a little repetitive as it went on and, since the plot is pretty flimsy, when the jokes falter there's not much more to sustain it.

Interesting premise: real-life comedian Albert Brooks, playing a fictionalised version of himself, is tasked by the U.S. government with visiting India and Pakistan to compile a report on what makes their citizens laugh. It has some interest as a comment on American foreign policy, unfortunately the execution is poor and it's just not funny. While watching the Woody Allen film after this I was left wondering how much more Allen's deadpan style and wry commentary could've wrought from the scenario.

Goofy veterinarian Corky, whose family are part of the mafia, is roped into infiltrating the FBI in order to destroy incriminating evidence about to be used to indict his father, played by Peter Falk. Does it deserve the 'Worst of the Worst' appellation? Not particularly. Don't get me wrong, it's awful, I think I mustered about one decent laugh throughout ("I don't wanna hear any more about your family's balls"), but It's not like it's extraordinary in its incompetence or offensive in its badness. Nor is it in the 'so bad it's good' territory. It's just a really lazy, boring comedy. Its popularity won't be helped by the fact that the unrelenting, pratfalling slapstick is something that would probably appeal most to 5 year-olds and yet, thanks presumably to the themes, the film has a 12 certificate.

This begins well with amazing attention to sound as every clock tick and scrape is accentuated during a shave that eventually turns into a standoff. The overall film is nowhere near as solemn and serious as its opening though; in fact, it is downright goofy at times with a zany house of mirrors, characters repeatedly punched by a mechanical device and lots of sped-up footage. This leads to an inconsistent tone (pulling in two directions) but it's pretty fun.

Some bad guys dress up and impersonate the protagonist here, committing various crimes in order to frame him, which gets on the nerves of a young boy who becomes confused about whether his hero is really a good guy or not. The child actor in the role is not especially good though with a gee-whiz attitude that makes him constantly seem more naïve than adorable. Smiley Burnette has some bright moments as the protagonist's sidekick though.

Jerry Seinfeld talks about being THAT person who didn’t pick up his trash and also didn’t put it in the trash can after the movie. All I have to say is that I used to work in a movie theater and I was the OTHER person who had to clean up afterward (sometimes). If it was like a premiere or full house, well, it got me wondering who were these people that didn’t clean up after themselves and now I know…. (this doesn’t make me hate Seinfeld, but it did make him seem a tad out of touch, being a millionaire and me, being a relatively normal person).

Phantom Thunderbolt is another B western that deserves to be tagged as a comedy more than many of the ones that are. I've posted a couple of specific reasons in the spoiler below but was also pleased to find that this early in the genre there was already a film having fun with the cliches. The Mystery of the Hooded Horsemen also seemingly hits nearly every cliche dead on but not in as knowing a fashion - nevertheless it was great fun.

Ken Maynard manages to nearly completely demolish a woman's cafe in a fistfight with another man when he steps in because the other man insults the woman. To pay her back for the damages he has caused, Maynard arranges to save the town from outlaws only if she will kiss him three times. Later, Maynard escapes from the outlaws by rolling downhill in a large barrel.

Uh... This was a weird one. It kind of reminded me of a John Waters movie with weird, unpleasant people doing terrible things to each other. Unlike John Waters, there's no sense of fun here. It's just ugly and unlikable...


166. Stella Shorts 1998-2002 (2002)
More David Wain! My wife and I shared an early bond over the TV series of Stella, finding it just hilarious. These early shorts made as a sort of demo reel/precursor to the series and based on Wain's, Michael Ian Black's and Michael Showalter's oddball improv sketch comedy touring show while rough around the edges are still plenty funny, albeit MUCH raunchier randomly than the series (fake dicks abound here...). Plus you have many early appearances for now much more well know folks like Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper and Sam Rockwell (who all appeared in other Wain projects later like the Stella series and Wet Hot American Summer). If you enjoy incredibly absurdist humor, I'd definitely give Stella a try.


167. Highway to Hell (1991)
Geez, this movie is nuts. For some reason I was not expecting it to be this crazy (the cover I saw made it look like some generic past-the-prime slasher). Basically a guy and his girlfriend are on their way through the desert to Las Vegas to elope when they fall asleep in their car on the side of the road. When the guy wakes up, he discovers that his fiance has been arrest by a Hellcop and the only way to get her back is to go to Hell and find her. Once in Hell he meets a rather colorful cast of characters that present their own challenges in navigating his way to his bride, and even once he finds her, the Hellcop isn't going to let them off easy. While this is no masterpiece, I did enjoy this off-the-wall, unique flick that does an interesting job of world building somewhere between Mad Max and the Super Mario Bros movie. It also has a surprising number of appearances by fairly well known faces in small roles like Richard Farnsworth, Gilbert Gottfried (as Hitler of course), hair metal rocker Lita Ford and a big chunk of the Stiller clan (Jerry, Ben and Amy). It may be sloppy and weird, but it definitely isn't boring.

Teen Wolf is another one of those movies that I thought it'd be nice to revisit since I haven't seen it in like 25 years or something. I remembered liking it alright as a kid but watching it now, the seams are starting to show. Many plot turns are just WAY too convenient and people are WAY too accepting of Scott just suddenly being a wolf. But I guess this kind of movie isn't really the kind of thing you want to think too hard about. So as dumb entertainment, I guess it's ok. At the very least, Michael J. Fox definitely dives in head first into his role. Teen Wolf Too though (which I'm not sure I ever actually watched) is just bad. It's almost a cookie cutter ripoff of the first movie but inferior in almost every way. In fact, I'd go out on a limb and say this is the worst thing I've seen Jason Bateman do... <stops writing this to go look up Bateman's IMDB> Yep, worst thing. I mean, he's done stuff like Couples Retreat, Extract and Identity Thief that are just kind of mediocre, but Teen Wolf Too is just repellent. Basically take the lead and put him in college instead of high school and have him compete in boxing instead of basketball. Use ALL the same story beats. Done.


170. The Hitman's Bodyguard (2017)
I kind of lump this movie in the same bucket as something like Central Intelligence. It's an affable and mildly entertaining action comedy that I'll probably totally forget about two days from now. But while it was on, I didn't get too bored. Sam Jackson and Ryan Reynolds are usually at least ok in whatever they're doing and the movie has a LOT of action (some of it staged pretty impressively actually). It does feel a little too long though.


171. Instant Family (2018) Bonus: It Could Happen To You
This movie was actually more rooted in reality and less wacky than the advertising and trailers made it out to be. It's actually a fairly grounded story of a couple that decided to take on foster care and ends up with three siblings: a feisty teen who resents them, an overly sensitive, accident-prone boy and a little girl who's a demanding asshole (she actually reminded me of my daughter ). While the movie does have a lot of humor in it, it doesn't go for cheap laughs and is rooted in a love for ts characters and a sincerity at its core. Having said that, it does go a little overly maudlin in places, but it also has some very real scenes like the couple after a particularly stressful evening when they're alone discussing how they can create a situation that would allow them to ship the trouble kids back to the foster program, so they wouldn't have to deal with them anymore. As a parent, I can relate. Yes, you love your kids, but sometimes when they're throwing shit and breaking things and screaming you just wanna punt 'em out a window or something. So while I don't have foster kids, a lot of this movie still hits pretty close to home. Also in a bit of a double bonus, while I myself haven't had foster kids, I do have an uncle who has gone though this whole process of taking in a troubled foster kid who was very sensitive much like the boy in the movie and also having to deal with the potential issues of dealing with the boy's real mother threatening to re-enter the picture. It all turned out well for them though. He's since adopted him and they've built a solid family together.

As with a lot of these low budget westerns, it is the quality of the comic relief and songs that distinguish them. In this case, Dub Taylor is amusing in support, but does not have a lot to do. The songs are pretty great though, especially a Cowboys and Indians ditty and the singing cowhands who perform the songs are interesting fellows, with one even exclaiming that it is better not to be paid to sing, which earns him looks of derision from the others.

While this film does not milk the comedic potential of its central mix-up for all that it is worth, Penny Singleton holds her own for the most part here, even proving a good shot on a couple of occasions - and her pet dog rules. The film becomes less interesting as it progresses and co-lead Glenn Ford starts to take centre focus with too much romantic stuff. There are some great supporting turns though, including from Ann Miller... and a deflating pie!

This may not the best film to see Lash La Rue's whip in action as it rarely comes out. What the film does really well though is crafty a juicy sidekick role for the always delightful Al St. John who gets head-butt baddies in between such fun like being scared of his own reflection and curious about a hat that seems to be moving on its own. The plot is not half-bad either with St. John and La Rue on the trail of a bad guy with megalomaniacal murder plans.

Jerry Seinfeld talks about being THAT person who didn’t pick up his trash and also didn’t put it in the trash can after the movie. All I have to say is that I used to work in a movie theater and I was the OTHER person who had to clean up afterward (sometimes). If it was like a premiere or full house, well, it got me wondering who were these people that didn’t clean up after themselves and now I know…. (this doesn’t make me hate Seinfeld, but it did make him seem a tad out of touch, being a millionaire and me, being a relatively normal person).

Why not give Tokyo Godfathers a try? It does meet the criterion of having a perverted old man in it and is genuinely very good and more naturalistic in tone than many anime. It's from Satoshi Kon, director of Perfect Blue, and is a loose remake of John Ford's Three Godfathers.

172. Chûgoku no chôjin a.k.a. Bird People of China (1998)
This may very well be one of Takashi Miike's restrained films in what starts as a fish out of water comedy about a Japanese businessman sent to China to inspect some precious jewels with a yakuza who was sent by his boss to ensure the businessman handled everything on the up-and-up but slowly morphs into something more interesting but also a little elusive as the simple life of the villagers and a song sang by a sad little girl in particular begins to change the men's outlook on life in ways they didn't expect. I thought it was quite good although I'm not sure I'd necessarily recommend it for Miike fans who are looking for more Ichi the Killer or Audition.


173. The Wrong Missy (2020)
Well, here's another lazy, poorly scripted mess from Happy Madison Productions. While there are a couple of somewhat funny moments despite the junk, the movie just coasts on Lauren Lapkus being incredibly loud and disruptive in various social situations as a hapless David Spade looks on in horror. I feel like Lapkus herself has some potential. I've seen her in a couple other things where she's quite good, but this is just not the platform to highlight what she's capable of.


174. Bad Milo! (2013)
Hm... This is definitely a movie about a monster living in a guy's intestines who emerges from his anus to murder the people that stress him out. Ken Marino plays this with an odd sincerity that makes it work much more than it should. And it is legitimately funny at times. Fans of movies like Basket Case may be into it.


175. The Gong Show Movie (1980)
Eh... Intended to I guess highlight the crap Chuck Barris has to deal with outside the confines of The Gong Show in his daily life, really the r-rated Gong Show outtakes are about the only actual amusing parts of the movie. The rest of it is just kind of dull and vaguely depressing.


176. House Party (1990)
A very solid "Into the Night" flick that features Kid trying to get to a party after being grounded for school shenanigans with some bullies and follows the fallout of the events of the party. I actually had a lot of fun with this one. It seems on the surface to be very loose and unstructured but things do have a way of connecting together and tying up what seem like loose ends into a more coherent whole. It also mixes in some social commentary without coming across too overbearing about it.


177. Hallelujah the Hills (1963)
Man, this was weird. I think it was about two guys enamored with and dumped by the same woman, but to confuse things, the woman is played by two different actresses depending on who she's interacting with. It also has this odd tone of mixing wacky antics not unlike something from Laurel & Hardy with absurdist weird interludes that don't make much sense. To make matters even more perplexing, much of the dialogue seems improvised, so conversations don't always go anywhere related to the story.


178. A Comédia de Deus a.k.a God's Comedy (1995)
Ew... Basically it's about a super creep who manages an ice cream parlor to obnoxious perfection while skeazing on the female employees and ultimately getting extremely sleazy with a 15 year old girl. This dude makes Woody Allen almost normal (nah, j/k. Woody's still a creep too). This this is also about an hour too long. There were stray bits of dialogue that I got a little snicker out of me (as he leafs through his pubic hair scrapbook and gets to a page with Queen Victoria's he says "God shave the queen"... It's stupid but the way he says it still got a little chuckle from me), but overall this is not something I was even close to being into.

Played as a comedy though, the movie never builds up much in the way of tension and the townsfolk seldom seem all that antagonistic.

Which is sad, because I saw some funny clips on YouTube and was eager to check out his comedy specials.

Jerry Seinfeld talks about being THAT person who didn’t pick up his trash and also didn’t put it in the trash can after the movie. All I have to say is that I used to work in a movie theater and I was the OTHER person who had to clean up afterward (sometimes). If it was like a premiere or full house, well, it got me wondering who were these people that didn’t clean up after themselves and now I know…. (this doesn’t make me hate Seinfeld, but it did make him seem a tad out of touch, being a millionaire and me, being a relatively normal person).

This initially feels a lot like The Beguiled with each of the possible widows attracted to and fascinated by Gable, the only man they have seen alive in months. There are some distinct mystery elements too (are the sons really dead and did Gable really know one of them?) though these take a back-seat to Gable's pursuit of the loot, happy to seduce any of the women as need has it. It is a reasonably interesting set-up but pales against The Beguiled.
