Except for saying he prays to Joe Pesci, this was horrible. Joking about terrorist attacks and shootings in churches, raping teenagers, and hating children, and NOT WASHING HIS HANDS EVEN AFTER GOING TO THE BATHROOM, I think I’m done with George Carlin. Which is sad, because I saw some funny clips on YouTube and was eager to check out his comedy specials.

Jerry Seinfeld talks about being THAT person who didn’t pick up his trash and also didn’t put it in the trash can after the movie. All I have to say is that I used to work in a movie theater and I was the OTHER person who had to clean up afterward (sometimes). If it was like a premiere or full house, well, it got me wondering who were these people that didn’t clean up after themselves and now I know…. (this doesn’t make me hate Seinfeld, but it did make him seem a tad out of touch, being a millionaire and me, being a relatively normal person).
49. W. Kamau Bell: Private School Negro (2018) 8/10 Heard positive things about this one and added it to my watchlist. Was not disappointed.

The plot is a mess here, consisting of loosely strung together comic episodes and none of the lead's alternate love interests make an impression. The film survives surprisingly well though simply on account of W.C. Fields and Mae West's lead turns. Their banter and chemistry together is great (a scene with a goat especially) but both also have fantastic moments apart - Fields taking a weird bath; West holding her own in court, shooting from train, etc.

I had watched this a couple years ago and thought it was ok but not one of Wilder's/Pryor's best, and my wife expressed some interest in it after I left the blu-ray three-pack out from watching See No Evil, Hear No Evil last week. so I figured why not? Honestly, it still hasn't really improved on a second watch. If anything knowing where there are long stretches with no humor just makes it feel less interesting.

I like both Pryor and Wilder and remember them as having great chemistry together but I never got around to seeing this one until earlier this month. I was very disappointed at what a secondary, supporting role Pryor had as I remember them being more equal in the other films they made together. Maybe I'm misremembering and need to revisit the others now.

Well, in See No Evil, Hear No Evil, they are very much both front-and-center and play off each other really well. Silver Streak on the other hand from what I remember doesn't really bring Pryor into the picture until close to halfway through the movie. Their last team-up Another You I honestly can't remember. It's been over twenty years since I watched and really don't remember much of anything about it. Maybe I should revisit that one too.

It also struck me watching it that Poitier's vibe as a director veers much more towards light comic material than all his acting roles ever did.

Yea, I've definitely noticed this with Poitier. I watched Uptown Saturday Night , one of his action comedies he did with Bill Cosby earlier this year, and of course he directed the notorious Ghost Dad. I wonder why he never really tried to make the sort of message films he frequently starred in.

I've got a copy of one of his autobiographies - one of these days i may get around to reading it. I think a lot of actors in the studio system were forced into doing things by the studios - Poitier is a great dramatic actor but he could also be very funny. Maybe the studios felt like what was needed was him in more dramatic roles and maybe when given the ability to direct he rebelled against that. That's a lot of maybes.

31. Bob Rubin: Oddities and Rarities (2020) - This was a really unique stand up. It had few true jokes with punchlines. It is more high energy, high intensity nonsensical rants. It's an hour of absurdist monologues with jokes sprinkled in. I can see it being very polarizing, but I can see his style developing a cult following. I'd give it a chance just to see if it's for you.

146. Tsirk a.k.a. Circus (1936)
This soviet-era musical isn't terrible but, like many films from the Soviet Union during this time, the random Stalinist propaganda can be jarring because it just seems to come out of nowhere at times.


147. Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam (1986) BONUS: Habbabam Saves Christmas
148. Turist Ömer Uzay Yolu'nda a.k.a. Ömer the Tourist in Star Trek (1973) BONUS: Habbabam Saves Christmas
So this was an interesting pairing. The Omer the Tourist character actually lends himself pretty well to an Ernest comparison. Oddly enough though, Dr. Otto...etc. is by far the least typical Ernest movie despite this being Ernest's big screen debut. From a comparison standpoint, Omer is pretty idiotic and bumbling, constantly causing trouble for those around him much like Ernest. Where they differ is that Omer has a little bit of a sleazy streak to him while Ernest comes across much more innocent. As for this particular Omer movie (he actually showed up in a whole bunch of Turkish movies during this time period usually as comedic relief), I'm pretty impressed by how brazen the copyright infringement is on this one, even for a Turkish film. The characters, sets and music are all from Star Trek and the plot itself is even ripped off from a random episode. Most of the comedy seems to be drawn from Omer constantly trolling Spock and hitting on women.

Bouncing back to Ernest, he really only appears at the beginning and end of Dr. Otto & the Riddle of the Gloom Beam to basically setup the premise of some changing coffin that transforms Ernest into Dr. Otto, a psychotic evil mastermind bent on world domination with a hand growing out of his head. And yes, this movie is extremely fucking weird. The main protagonist is an unlikable, arrogant douche bag named Lance Sterling who's generally pretty oblivious to Dr. Otto's schemes despite his much smarter assistant's warnings.

Spoiler

Oh and he really doesn't do much to stop Dr. Otto from actually destroying much of the world, leaving it a post-apocalyptic wasteland with scarce resources by the end of the movie.

I almost recommend watching this one just to see how bizarre it is.


149. The Old Dark House (1963)
This William Castle flick starring Tom Poston (who you may know from the myriad sitcoms he appeared in over the years like Newhart and Mork & Mindy) is a kinda, sorta remake of the 1932 Boris Karloff film. I say 'kind of' because while the plot uses many of the same characters and basic premise of people being bumped off in a creepy house during a rainstorm, the plot of why they're there is quite different with Tom Poston's character being a new addition as well. This version also seems to lean more into the comedy, feeling more like the sillier Cat & The Canary than the original 1932 version. Still it was entertaining and rarely boring. I'll take it.


150. The In-Laws (1979)
I liked this one pretty well. I was actually surprised at how similar it was in places to the movie with The Rock & Kevin Hart I watched a couple of weeks ago Central Intelligence but with a Meet the Parents twist to it. Peter Falk and Alan Arkin are a great pairing with Falk a casual and chaotic CIA agent going rogue on the eve of his son's wedding to bust an international counterfeiting ring and Arkin the hapless, neurotic father of the bride and erstwhile dentist who Falk pulls into the whole debacle against his will.The movie is very quick-moving, funny and watchable, particularly compared to many of the less plot-driven New Hollywood films of the '70s that preceded it (perhaps because it was directed by Arthur Hiller who had just finished another action comedy, Silver Streak).


151. Yôkai hantâ: Hiruko a.k.a. Hiruko the Goblin (1991)
Sandwiched between Shinya Tsukamoto's Tetsuo films is the very different in tone wild fantasy horror flick that takes Tsukamoto's style and filters it through The Evil Dead and Hong Kong horror comedies like Mr. Vampire to create something probably a little more palatable to the average horror fan compared to many of his more abstract, crazy films. It's enjoyable with some neat, satisfyingly grotesque creature effects but isn't something I'd hold up as a classic like some of his other works.


152. Rory Scovel Tries Stand-Up for the First Time (2017)
This was a pretty funny special. While not everything worked, there was enough to elicit some laugh out loud moments from me. At times it gets very abstract and almost self-conscious in what it's doing like his bit about airplanes that every comic seems to have to work in. Plus the special starts with him riffing on the same basic anal sex joke for like five minutes to immediately put you into a very specific state of mind.

The first Abbott and Costello film I've seen. I only came upon it by accident after meaning to download the 1956 film of the same name. The duo investigate a Nazi conspiracy secretly operating through public radio broadcasts. Once the plot got going I started to like it more, it was the Warner Bros-esque cartoon violence and stunts that punctuate the story that I liked most though. On the other hand, the shrieking, imbecile antics of Costello often at the centre of the stunts was insufferable, a man trying way too hard to be funny.

Two present-day volunteers of average intelligence are roped by the military into being frozen in suspended animation for a year, only for them to remain frozen for 500 years and then released into a society that's evolved a far lower average IQ and in which they are now comparative geniuses. It's a film I've always ignored with the vague impression of it being one of those bottom rung Sandleresque affairs, but that's not the case, it's wittier and more serious than that. The laughs come regularly, particularly in the various verbal manglings and malapropisms, and the humour works best when it's recognisable in today's world. The main downside was that the jokes got a little repetitive as it went on and, since the plot is pretty flimsy, when the jokes falter there's not much more to sustain it.

Interesting premise: real-life comedian Albert Brooks, playing a fictionalised version of himself, is tasked by the U.S. government with visiting India and Pakistan to compile a report on what makes their citizens laugh. It has some interest as a comment on American foreign policy, unfortunately the execution is poor and it's just not funny. While watching the Woody Allen film after this I was left wondering how much more Allen's deadpan style and wry commentary could've wrought from the scenario.

Goofy veterinarian Corky, whose family are part of the mafia, is roped into infiltrating the FBI in order to destroy incriminating evidence about to be used to indict his father, played by Peter Falk. Does it deserve the 'Worst of the Worst' appellation? Not particularly. Don't get me wrong, it's awful, I think I mustered about one decent laugh throughout ("I don't wanna hear any more about your family's balls"), but It's not like it's extraordinary in its incompetence or offensive in its badness. Nor is it in the 'so bad it's good' territory. It's just a really lazy, boring comedy. Its popularity won't be helped by the fact that the unrelenting, pratfalling slapstick is something that would probably appeal most to 5 year-olds and yet, thanks presumably to the themes, the film has a 12 certificate.

The plot is a little ridiculous and some the lowbrow humour (vomit; butt flexes; wet dreams) feels straight out of its star's bottom fodder comedies, but this is actually a very sweet movie overall, full of likeable characters and a very dynamic central romance. The film channels Groundhog Day at its best, with Adam Sandler gradually learning how to create a perfect romantic day, though the film could also be thought of as Memento as a romcom.

This has been one of my highest unseen TSP movies for years and I had a bit of expectation at least. Mostly this challenge has reminded me how unfunny I find it when comedies mostly rely on ridiculous plots and stupid characters (or characters acting stupid) which is also prevalent in a lot of comedy today. Am I just lacking a sense of humour or why can't I understand the appeal of so many of these movies?
Mishandling of exotic animals didn't help me enjoy this either

The basic plot is nothing to write home about here and the film eventually descends into a formulaic series of shootouts. The comic relief is way above average though, with a particularly great almost completely silent sequence in which two men are lead into and locked in a barn; there is also a well-trained monkey who very humorously causes one antagonist to constantly believe that he is seeing things. In the lead role, Tom Keene is mostly just ok.

The idea of flawed humans acting irrationally under stress has potential, and some of the dark humour here works as the flight crew become more worried about their sexual orientation than anything else as they approach impending doom. The gags are generally of the hit-and-miss variety though with almost equally as many hits and misses. Some of the more sexually charged aspects make an impression, but this feels very slight and unfocused.

Made under a alias, directing auteur Jean Rollin (who has a funny cameo) reunites with his regular cinematographer of this period Jean-Jacques Renon and shows his hand from the moment Monica walks down a staircase in a manor house wearing a nightgown. Hitching a ride in the middle of his Horror run, Rollin continues to stylishly expand on his major recurring motifs, hitching Monica and her friend/ partner Jackie to a isolated manor house,frozen in wide-shots panning across the stilted surrounding woodland, landing on chic, shot through colourful panel lighting frolics of the duo and thieves. Wisely not going for extreme close-ups on the raunchy thrills, Rollin keeps his unique mood flowing with soft-lit close-ups on the faces of the kinky duo. Rollin also displays an unexpected charm for a Comedy farce, gleefully mocking shoot-outs in Crime flicks with a extended fight between investigators and thieves.

Acting regularly in Rollin’s films, the screenplay (this site lists her as “Script”) by Natalie Perrey is dented by clear jumps/scenes being cut, (presumable for those being moments where Adult inserts were to to be placed) but overcomes those problem with a playful Grindhouse take on Rollin’s themes, with the jewel robbery gang finding their plans interrupted by the hypnotic Monica (played by a sultry Joelle Coeur) and Gilda Arancio (played by a eager Gilda Arancio) going for a hitch-hike.

This was a weird surprising discovery for me a while back - a sexploitation film about a woman with a talking vagina. I rewatched this with my wife (the only person I can be around) because I thought the film had some really interesting commentary on feminism, about how awful it is to be reduced to nothing more than a body part and the exploitive nature of women in mass media. Wife watched it - definitely saw the feminist undertones, but thought it was sloppy, exploitive, and underwhelming. And I have to say, I agree - this didn't hold up on rewatch.

I quite liked this dark comedy thriller. I may have to give it another watch in the near future with my wife. She likes these type of crime comedies.


154. Lady Killer (1933)
This movie about a con turned actor really gets by on James Cagney's seemingly effortless charisma. Recommended for Cagney fans for sure.


155. Hollywood Shuffle (1987)
Overall not an amazing or terribly funny movie but the Black Acting School section and the movie reviews segment were both really funny, much more than most of the rest of the movie.


156. Die Finanzen des Großherzogs a.k.a. Finances of the Grand Duke (1924)
While occasionally mildly amusing this felt pretty slight coming from Murnau.


157. Vicky Cristina Barcelona (2008)
So you know how it seems like every Woody Allen movie either has him in it or a surrogate of him? I was kind of surprised to find that Scarlet Johansson is basically the Allen surrogate here, a bundle of neuroses complaining of ulcers and yet still ending up in the most ridiculous shared relationship with the passionate and gorgeous Salma Hayek and Javier Bardem. Overall, it's a pretty solid later period Allen movie.


158. Le plus vieux métier du monde a.k.a. The Oldest Profession (1967)
This anthology movie that focuses on prostitution through the ages is definitely VERY hit or miss. The most notable is probably Godard's future-forward segment done in Alphaville mode.


159. The Love Parade (1929)
I find Jeanette MacDonald's singing beyond irritating usually and for some reason Maurice Chevalier and his shit-eating grin just rub me the wrong way. So you can imagine I was not the biggest fan of this Lubitsch (keeping in mind that some Lubitsch films are among my favorite comedies).


160. Return to Nuke 'Em High Volume 1 (2013)
It's a Troma film from head honcho Lloyd Kaufman. Complete unbridled anarchy. Silly, raunchy, ridiculously gory and violent with surprising cameos from the likes of Stan Lee as the narrator and Lemmy of Motorhead as the President of United States. If you've seen even one of Kaufman's Troma movies, you probably already know whether you will enjoy this or not.

While it is fun to see Randolph Scott so youthful here, it is not a particularly meaty role and he is upstaged by a young Billy Lee in every scene that the boy is in, though Lee himself is an uneven addition. While sometimes charming (calling his mother aside to tell her a secret), the film too often plays up his cutesiness for laughs with the project often feeling more him than the arduous trek. There are also A LOT of campfire songs in the mix.
