This Orwell adaptation begins well with an appropriately nightmarish drunken rampage by the farmer, animated to look aptly ghoulish. The gradual changes to the principles (pigs altering the slogans) come with ample doom and gloom too. A number of the animal creatures come off as cute Disney-like creations though and much of the humour interferes with the mood. The voiceover narration is also cut and dry and the changed ending sucks.

Rohmer's never been one of my favorite directors, but I also rarely actively dislike his movies. This one is no different. It's breezy and charming but seems to lack weight.

While not as polished as Hotel Rwanda, it digs deeper. It's still very grim and harrowing as one would expect of a film about a trial against war criminals of a genocide.


147. Sexykiller, morirás por ella (2008)
I don't know why this was nominated for DtC, but thanks to whoever did. While it isn't one of the best movies ever made, Sexykiller is a hell of a lot of fun even though it randomly doesn't make sense. But the movie embraces its lack of logic with the lead actress murdering people for minor annoyances, and by the time it throws zombies into the mix, its rushing forward blindly into the void of nonsense and having a ball all the way down.

What starts off as a documentary about a man asking his autistic friend to explain what it is like being on the spectrum like morphs into a look at the friend dealing with landlords who want to evict him over self-made alterations. The film is especially engrossing in its early stages as he talks about recording phone conversations because he needs to listen to them more than once to understand them, but the second half is very emotional too.

If Justice makes the list, I don't think it would open the door to many more lectures. Justice has higher production quality than other lectures that I've seen (most only use 1 camera), and it's one of the few lecture series that was shown on TV. The Socratic teaching method makes it more entertaining than most lectures, and probably better than any lecture scene that I've seen in a movie. I also like that it's both advanced enough to be interesting and introductory enough that anyone can watch it.

I'm convinced enough to raise my score for Justice to a 5. It's been a while since anything has fascinated me so much.

In terms of cinematography and design, this is amazing, but most of the anthology segments were slow and simplistic, usually consisting of Kurosawa's avatar walking through a strange landscape and having a lengthy conversation with a fantastical character. Two segments stand out: "Sunshine through the rain" simply for being the most oneiric and for its stunning final image, and "Crows" for its sophisticated meditation on the connection between art and reality.

The first half of this western didn't do much for me but things became a lot more interesting though as they come across an ominously photographed hanging tree and the bounty hunter protagonist reveals some dark secrets/ulterior motives. The film has a pretty excellent showdown too with Randolph Scott doing well projecting an air of ambiguity as to how far his character will go. The final image is absolutely haunting too.

16. Aranyer Din Ratri / Days and Nights in the Forest (Satyajit Ray, 1970) maybe (3-4)

Back to more typical Ray, a drama (though with a fair bit of humor) about a group of four young Calcutta men, up-and-comers in the world I suppose who aren't quite there yet, who go on a holiday out in the country, with lots of culture- and class-conflicting results. Soumitra Chatterjee and Sharmila Tagore are on hand once again, as the most well-off and polished of the four visitors, and the beautiful younger daughter of the nearest neighbor to the bungalow where they're staying. This has a little bit more "relaxed" and almost improvised feel to it than most of the director's earlier work, perhaps in part due to a larger and somewhat disparate cast, and a fairly minimal plot - it's mostly just various interactions exploring the differences between the four men - who it's clear will not be friends for life - and between the various attitudes towards city and country life. It feel like a small film with some fairly big insights and ambitions, mostly hiding and bubbling up at unexpected moments. Pretty terrific in the end, and I look forward to continuing on with Ray's work in the 70s.

17. Saint Jack (Peter Bogdanovich, 1978) maybe (3-4)

TCM. Saint Jack is definitely much better than Nickelodeon, the director's previous film and last of three flops in a row, which TCM showed just before this. A big part of that involves Ben Gazzara giving one of his best performances as a likable pimp - rather, the owner of a house of ill repute, but ill repute with good repute as one might say - in Singapore, and his befriending of a British accountant (Denholm Elliott) who visits him once a year to do his books. It was all shot on location in Singapore and it has a much looser and low-key feel than the previous film - more natural and never forced. I'm not sure that overall it adds up to anything beyond a well-shot character study of a basically good guy in a basically bad business (the kind of role Gazzara excelled in), but maybe that's enough.

18. Siu Lam juk kau / Shaolin Soccer (Stephen Chow, 2001) no (1-3)

Been wanting to see this for a while. The only other Chow-directed film I'd seen is his 2004 "breakthrough hit" - i.e, the first film that showed up in commercial release in the USA - Kung Fu aka Kung Fu Hustle, which I saw in the cinema and liked a fair amount. I've seen him in a few films as an actor also but I guess they've been far enough apart that he hasn't made an immense impression on me yet. Seeing this one now I remember some of the issues I had with Kung Fu, namely the comedy - Hong Kong comedy is pretty iffy for me, I do feel I'm getting a better handle on it, but still the more comedically-oriented action films often leave me a little cold, and this was no exception. The action sequences are pretty cool and the effects, some of it CG, look pretty good for an almost 20-year-old film, but the low humor and melodrama around Chow's relationship with the steamed-bun maker (and also kung fu expert, of course) played by Wei Zhao are rather tiresome. Still this story of, well, football players recruited by a losing coach so as to best his rival (who coaches the "Evil Team" ha ha), all of whom are martial arts experts, starts out very entertainingly, and the ending match it kind of fun if too silly for me.

19. Is-slottet / Ice Palace (Per Blom, 1987) no (1-3)

This seems to be well-loved around here judging from a few comments; hate to be the spoilsport but while I think I appreciate what this story of a couple of prepubescent girls, and the tragedy that befalls them, in a cold winter involving an iced-over waterfall, it just din't work for me overall. It's certainly a graceful and understated work, involving budding sexuality and the sense of outsider-ness that people can feel, in terms of being new to a community, of sex and gender issues, and just of being young --- but it felt rather endless despite it's very short running time, and while it's nicely shot the cinematic beauty wasn't enough to slough off the tedium; also the music just seemed to belong to something else to me. This very much felt like the kind of film I should love, but I just didn't.

20. Skepp till India Land / A Ship Bound for India (Ingmar Bergman, 1947) no (1-3)

One of just a couple of early Bergmans that I haven't seen, this is a typical enough work about a young man who suffers from a hunchback - which may or may not be psychosomatic - and the problematic relationship with his brutal and uncaring father that defines not only his life but his mother's, and his father's mistress who the son grows to love. It's really quite beautifully shot and certainly feels less ponderous than some of Bergman's later works, but it doesn't feel particularly special, and Birger Malmsten as the son is a little tiresome.

21. Tulipunainen kyyhkynen / The Scarlet Dove (Matti Kassila, 1961) no (1-3)

An older man and his much younger wife talk about age and their marriage as they laze outside on the dock by their house; she gets a letter, and something about her expression makes the husband take notice...is it a young lover perhaps? And so begins a long and beautifully composed journey into the world of paranoia, obsession, jealousy and the labyrinth of film noir, early-60s-Finnish style. Not that this appears on any major noir lists, but I think most viewers strongly familiar with the style would agree with me that it merits consideration. Soon the husband is pursuing the wife through the streets of Helsinki...there is a tryst...a murder...a hook-up with a hooker...the police, and interrogation...search for the hooker...a house that isn't there...a ship...the murderer there?...and finally

the dream is over, and it really was all a dream, with all of the husband's guests playing their parts in the dream and reality. I'm not necessarily against "it was a dream" endings but in this case I really think it almost ruins the film. Too bad, a better ending and this would really be something.

22. Sellaisena kuin sinä minut halusit / The Way You Wanted Me (Teuvo Tulio, 1944) maybe (3-4)

This is a more pure melodrama and while it's got it's messages and moments of conservative morality to it, works much better than the earlier film as an often fever-pitched examination of the fate of women in patriarchal society. I wouldn't say it gets to the level of Sirk, and it's even less subtle than he is at his most blunt, but there's a comparison to be made. Maja, a young woman (Marie-Louise Fock, magnetic) goes from being the prettiest, innocent girl on a country isle to a hardened prostitute in the big city, betrayed and lied to by every man around her along the way. What makes this enjoyable are the incredible Dickensian coincidences that keep piling up - one man is hauled off by the cops literally at the moment he's planning a life with Maja, another gets in a lethal fight while in exactly the same situation, a girl is saved by the doctor who had jilted her mother years before and who turns out to be...well, you can guess. This wouldn't work if not for the feeling in the lead actress and in the script -- it's crazy and over the top but clearly full of compassion and righteous anger, and overall it's pretty terrific, if you can take the plot's silliness.

Nothing bad in this large group, but I'll just go through the highlights - too hard for me to write about experimental stuff in general, and while all of these were accomplished in some respects, let's face it, most are going to disappear from my memory, and icm's memory, shortly after the new DTC is published. The Solomon work was quite beautiful, I think my first by him; dunno if the narration adds much to it, honestly. Something to watch again on a bigger screen and in total darkness. Orchard Street is a wonderful tour down Ken Jacobs' memory lane of the title street in New York, a huge free-for-all market in the 50s, a once all-Jewish neighborhood starting to become more diverse. Ken Jacobs has a Vimeo channel for those who care with a longer version of this and loads of other stuff. Errigal is a pretty simple view of one of Ireland's famous mountains but the film gets at some of the magic and mystery of such places better than most. Hynningen offers ghostly inhabitants of an isolated country farmhouse, doing at a slower, statelier pace some of what Takashi Ito does in his ghostly Tokyo sequences, and just as brilliantly. Obreras saliendo de la fábrica is the only thing here approaching a narrative, an expansion in some respects of the Lumière short that provides a part of it's name, but delves into the social and economic issues of these low-paid workers, at another time, on another continent, but probably much the same. The Art of Flying is just a simple but extremely beautiful sequence of huge numbers of starlings flying in sequence - this would look great on a massive screen, and The Dante Quartet is certainly my favorite Brakhage film so far, the first one that just bowled me over on one viewing (I watched it twice). I've seen and liked a couple of his other painted-on-film works but this is on another level for me and while getting at just how much a totally abstract work can fit in with Dante is beyond me at this point, somehow it just "feels" right. I think the variation in shot length is really key here too - the Makino film by comparison is almost entirely done at epilepsy-inducing very fast speed and it's headache-inducing and wearying. This seems to slow down and speed up at just the right moments to keep it interesting.

Possible. I was living in Vermont in the early 2000s and definitely had fewer cinema choices than I'd had in Chicago. Pretty sure Shaolin Soccer never played where I was. Just looked on BoxOfficeMojo which gives domestic (US) box office of just under $500k for the earlier film and $17 million for Kung Fu Hustle so that bears out my memory.

And "Kung Fu Fighting" is the most awesome song ever, you need to hear it again.

I am sorry for those I have dissapointed with low rankings for (predominantly) experimental shorts, I fail to value them as movies and especially Dusty stacks of Mom and Anticipation of the Night were a shore to get through (because they really went on longer than needed, there was nothing in there for me that needed to approach a feature length). Final grumble for this last batch of viewings too with some of my lowest ratings of the month for the silly illogical filmed theatre of Man's Favorite Sport and Beyond Reasonable Doubt. The actors try their best, but the writing is especially weak and I don't understand why those could have become classics... but that's just me On the other hand, the theatricality of Rumble Fish was also undeniable, but in that flick, aided by cool noir stylings in an 80's vibe, it added very much to the mood! and I didn't even think the actors were so great in that one... so what works or not might carry a fair bit of subjectivity to it. looking forward to the final reveal!
