With fiery street demonstrations and talk about Indian independence in the air, the period of history here is fascinating. The extremes represented by the protagonist's husband and his revolutionary friend are curious, with the husband embracing British values and customs. As an allegory, the film is a bit simple, but as a tale of a woman encouraged by her husband to think for herself and then unsure of whether she is being manipulated, it is enticing.

Good movie but soul-crushingly depressing at times.


112. The Mule (2018)
Decent Eastwood movie but honestly not one of his best. He seems to basically be playing a version of himself here as an easy-going but mildly bigoted, racist old man. Basically a nicer, laid back version of his character from Gran Torino. Despite the dangerous circumstances and the ruthless characters involved, for some reason, I never felt like he was in any real peril. The movie also seems to wrap up a little too quickly with some loose ends.


113. Psiconautas, los niños olvidados a.k.a. Birdboy: The Forgotten Children (2015)
Odd, dark and imaginative animated film involving some kids running away from home, one of whom befriends Birdboy, a troubled youth with a sickness inside that threatens to break out and destroy. It's an interesting and fucked up film with very good animation and sound design. Recommended for folks who like their movies dark and weird, laced with symbolism.

Paul Newman's performance is sensational here, maintaining a tough exterior while noticeably upset over his job loss, gradual loss of eyesight and loneliness following his wife's death. Far less effective is Robby Benson as the titular son with constant wide-eyed expressions and over-the-top disbelief at his father's stoicism. The tension between them is pretty interesting though and Benson also has some strong scenes with a very young Ellen Barkin.

At first, Jack Lemmon seems like an odd choice for the lead role here, but it is really a fantastic bit of casting since the film begins as more of a frothy comedy with the plot only gradually growing grim and serious as Lemmon becomes increasingly disillusioned while on the cattle drive. Glenn Ford is also solid as an idol/mentor who he soon comes to resent and the building tension between them, culminating in a memorable fire scene, is very intense.

An interesting film that was hampered for me in large part by the casting of Rock Hudson as a conflicted German soldier on furlough from the Russian front in WWII.

I think that I generally "like" disturbing films (perhaps "appreciate" is a better word). I was going to recommend you Barefoot Gen (which is my go-to most disturbing film of all-time) but you have already seen it and rated it four stars on Letterboxd.

While the romance that develops is predictable here, the initial friction between John Wayne and Geraldine Page is great, both communicating silently volumes: her fear that he will rape her, and his knowledge of this, while nodding as she keeps talking about how her husband will return at any moment. Wayne also has a touching relationship with her son (outside of teaching him to swim). Too bad all the racially insensitive Apache stuff sucks.

Thanks for thinking of me with your recommendation and yes I adore Barefoot Gen, a truly disturbing film that is amongst my favourite animated films. I am always impressed by any film that can disturb or provoke such a feeling of horror/disgust in the viewer but can do so in a way that has artistic merit.

I watched this one last week but forgot to check it off. I just can't seem to get into Whit Stillman's upper crust first world problems frankly. There is the occasional chuckle-worthy line of dialogue but on the whole I have trouble getting into his movies.


113. Blues in the Night (1941)
Pretty decent flick that starts out as a 'getting the band together' type story and morphs into a noir with a relentlessly unlikable femme fatale. The music was cookin' but the plot felt overly predictable in the back half.


114. Alexandra's Project (2003)
Quite engrossing film of a husband who comes home on his birthday to find his house empty and a VHS for him to play waiting on him. Despite most of the film being in a single location with a fairly basic premise, the core mystery of what exactly the wife's plan is kept it quite fascinating.


115-124. The Vietnam War E1-10 (2017)
Man, this was exhausting... Watched it over several days in between other things but still found it to be a draining yet very interesting and thorough experience. While the political machinations behind the scenes were of some interest, to me the best parts were the personal accounts from the people caught in the middle, both soldiers thrust into this kluge-y mess as well as the viet cong themselves, which is a perspective I rarely see in these kinds of docs.


125. Golem (1980)
From Piotr Szulkin, Polish director of a string of surreal, cerebral sci-fi films in the '80s including War of the Worlds: The Next Century, which I watched earlier this year in the sci-fi challenge, Golem felt a lot like Kafka's The Trial with the central character trapped in this morass of bureaucracy and harassment from officials and doctors explicitly due to his core humanity. I wasn't a huge fan of looking at the brownish tint on the film but have to admit it did suit the subject matter.
