32. To Live and Die in L.A. (1985)

From an airport run (and bathroom hold-up) to driving the wrong way along a freeway to elude pursuit, Willian Friedkin crafts some terrific action scenes here. The intriguing counterfeiting process is also shown in detail. This is not the easiest film to warm to though since the reckless William Petersen is not very likeable, but this is arguably deliberate with the film gradually becoming more about his ethically conflicted new partner.

Back to Italy again. Side-note somebody could write an essay about why these two in WWII defeated nations made so many gritty crimes movies in the 70s and how that relates to their economic recovery in the decades since the war.
24. Il poliziotto è marcio [Shoot First, Die Later] (1974, Fernando Di Leo): 6.5 - Decent poliziotteschi about a corrupt cop who comes in (moral) problems when he has to get a favor of his honest dad, also a police man, to destroy some evidence. sums the movie up greatly. The movie features some highly enjoyable car chases. - BC#1 Obstruction of Justice
25. Roma a mano armata [The Tough Ones/Assault with a Deadly Weapon/Brutal Justice/Rome Armed to the Teeth] (1976, Umberto Lenzi): 6.8 - Maurizio Merli is a Dirty Harry-esque though cop in this entertaining action-packed poliziotteschi from Lenzi. The biggest setback is the very episodic plot;, Merli seems to stumble on a crime being committed every time he turns a corner and wastes no time to kick that random criminals ass. - BC#2 Police Raid
26. La banda del gobbo [Brothers Till We Die] (1978, Umberto Lenzi): 6.2 - Apparently Thomas Milan's hunchback criminal from the previous movie was a big hit with audiences, cause Italians like an underdog as much as the next guy even if he's a violent criminal, so Lenzi and Milan made another movie with this character with Milan simultaneous revisiting another succes role of him from other movies. So yes this features Milan in a double role, which isn't as enjoyable as it sounds since Milan has a tendency to turn his characters in caricatures, the horrible wigs he wears don't help with diminishing this. After getting over Milan's annoying antics, the movie itself quite enjoyable.
Murder - The Snorkel (1958, Guy Green):
Attempted murder - Maniac (1963, Michael Carreras):
Assault - The St. Valentine's Day Massacre (1967, Roger Corman)

The fantastic ending
in which the cop is shot dead by a unsuspected other corrupt cop after he think he's in the clear with the gangsters

8. The Walking Dead (Curtiz, 1936) 5/10
Law and Order: Closing Statement
9. Arlington Road (Pellington, 1999) 5/10
Crime Wave: Treason
An Airplane/Naked Gun-style spoof of psychosexual crime thrillers. Reiner has the look and style of neo-noir down (he directed Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid after all), but he has to deal with a script full of unfunny and laboured gags that default to replicating a scene from Fatal Attraction/Basic Instinct/etc. and having the characters do a lot of physical clowning around.
3/10
Law and Order: Opening Statement (We see our hero making his opening statement as he defends his wife from a murder charge in which he was both the main witness and the arresting officer)

11. Tales from the Hood (Cundieff, 1995)
An anthology very strongly in the Tales from the Crypt mould (a couple of the stories are stock "Bad guy(s) do something bad then get a supernatural comeuppance"), but with a heavy focus on the African-American experience. What the stories lack in quality, they make up for with a very strong point of view, and the ending was awesome.
6/10
Crime Wave: Drug Dealing (drug dealing gangsters and cops feature in a couple of the stories)

12. The Corpse of Anna Fritz / El cadáver de Anna Fritz (Vicens, 2015)
Three scumbags sneak into a morgue to have sex with the corpse of a newly-deceased actress. Once through the deliberately repulsive first twenty minutes, the film settles down into a more familiar thriller plotline. Would have been better if the filmmakers either hadn't gone so far with the necrophilia aspect, or had fully committed and made it horrific all the way through. Tension is quite good, there's some mild commentary on celebrity obsession.
5/10
Crime Wave: Rape

13. Die Hölle / Cold Hell (Ruzowitzky, 2017)
Thriller in the Nordic Noir mould with a serial killer stalking Vienna and only a kickboxing taxi driver can stop him. Suffers from the fact that there's no real reason why a kickboxing taxi driver would be better suited to the job than the cops, so they have to make all the cops really stupid and obstructive. Despite good car chases, it was a bit frustrating.
4/10
Crime Wave: Attempted murder (As well as successful murders, the killer makes multiple failed murder attempts on the heroine)

20-43. Breaking Bad (five seasons, 62 episodes, 2971 minutes)
Well, this was excellent. Not perfect. But still fantastic. Right now, it's hard for me to wrap my head around the whole thing. Still, it's incredible for a TV show to get better with every passing season. I don't think I've ever seen a show that pulled it off.
Here are the episodes for some of the bonus challenges:
2.8 - "Better Call Saul" - Plea Bargain
2.11 - "Mandala" - Tax Evasion
2.12 - "Phoenix" - Blackmail
2.13 - "ABQ" - Manslaughter
4.7 - "Problem Dog" - Fingerprints
4.13 - "Face Off" - Arson
5.13 - "To'hajilee" - Miranda Warning

Thriller treads similar territory to A History of Violence as an amnesic woman begins to remember her violent past after a near-fatal incident awakens something inside. This is a far less character-based affair though, and well-crafted as many of the high octane action scenes are, the final quarter of the film feels like one over-the-top explosion after the other. Geena Davis is excellent though and there is some solid dark comedy ("Chefs do that.").

Nathan:
Alice, please? Your dog, Alice - it and my appetite are mutually exclusive.
Alice:
Well, what's wrong with the dog?
Nathan:
Simple: he's been licking his asshole for the last three straight hours. I submit to you that there is nothing there worth more than an hour's attention and I should think that whatever he is attempting to dislodge, is either gone for good... or there to stay.

44. El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)
Well, my decision to take a break from Breaking Bad world didn't last long. We'll see now how long I can hold off from starting Better Call Saul. Anyway, this sequel to the series was very well-made, but it felt wholly unnecessary.
45. Pu-239 (2006) - Extortion
A peculiar nuclear dramedy. It's like a vintage-2006, poorly informed American's fantasy about what mid-1990s Russia was like. I decided to see it on the basis of a cast headlined by Paddy Considine and Oscar Isaac, but it wasn't worth it.

This was fascinating... a doc about a police officer in NYC who was posting to an online fetish forum about wanting to kidnap, kill, and eat women. He went to trial on conspiracy to commit... charges, but he was arguing that it was purely a fantasy and does not reflect who he is. The doc did a really good job at zeroing in on that line between "free speech" and "conspiracy to commit a crime" and raised a lot of interesting ethical issues.
27. Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans (2009) BC1: Drug Use
Nic Cage + Werner Herzog? How did I not know about this? Great dark anti-hero film that goes through Cage's descent in drug use and abuse of power as a lieutenant in the police force. Very dark and solidly well done, but didn't quite have the emotionality to bring it to the next level for me.
28. Fight Club (1999) BC1: Arson
Rewatch because I haven't seen it in probably 15 years and a coworker loves it. Love the style of it, didn't get into the "deepness" of it.

Two part HBO doc about a 17yo girl who was charged with involuntary manslaughter for allegedly convincing her boyfriend to kill himself. This was very interesting in the way that it explored the line between chatting vs. planning, awful behavior vs. criminal acts, mental illness vs. culpability, etc. Weird case that's really tough to swallow, but a very interesting trial.

I have been very disappointed by this second season. The accumulaton of unlikely coincidences, the weakness of certain characters, the WTF of certain situations, make it really hard to believe the story and like its characters. The first season was a favorite of mine, so I'm quite disappointed here...

Well, what's wrong with the dog?
Nathan:
Simple: he's been licking his asshole for the last three straight hours. I submit to you that there is nothing there worth more than an hour's attention and I should think that whatever he is attempting to dislodge, is either gone for good... or there to stay.

Jeez, you guys are watching a lot of movies lately.
Oh wait. I forgot that most of you aren't living in a country in which the government has told you that you have to go work every single day for the rest of the year no matter how bad the Covid-19 pandemic gets.

And here I am on the other side of the country knowing my job could be counted in the days or could be weeks (please note I am the Store Manager of a Salvation Army Family Store (for those non-Australians while we call this an op-shop you might call it something like a thrift shop). Far from a necessary business and part of an organisation about human life, I'm on the borderline of closing. But otherwise yeah I agree with your assessment.sol wrote: ↑March 24th, 2020, 9:30 am Jeez, you guys are watching a lot of movies lately.Oh wait. At least your premier is telling parents that they should keep their children at home despite the fact that schools will remain open indefinitely. Over here, the advice being given out is that we should carry on, business as usual. Some parents are opting to keep their kids home, but a lot are not since both the premier and prime minister keep going on about how it is essential for schools to stay open despite the fact that we are the one institution exempt from social distancing (since it's not possible inside a classroom).zzzorf wrote: ↑March 24th, 2020, 11:49 amAnd here I am on the other side of the country knowing my job could be counted in the days or could be weeks (please note I am the Store Manager of a Salvation Army Family Store (for those non-Australians while we call this an op-shop you might call it something like a thrift shop). Jeez, that was really uncomfortable scene to watch in this #MeToo era. Made me really dislike his character - though he does get some nice redemption bits later on.
