I'd like to clarify. If a man makes a boring film, no one would say that it's not a good idea for men to have cameras. Marguerite Duras is famous for a lot of things. She was a novelist and perhaps she was allowed to make a lot of boring films because of her stature. I agree that INDIA SONG was boring to me personally, but I enjoyed some of her other works including Les Mains négatives (1978). As a feminist (only in regards to equality), I'm going to have to say that it never once occurred to me to have the camera taken away from Duras or any other woman. Women often don't get the same training or opportunities. If a film of theirs is weak, I'll acknowledge it, but I don't think it would be fair to say that they should never have access to a camera.

Sorry for not being specific. I have been including them.
The production values of the movie were quite good, it was rather a conscious decision by her to be boring than a lack of competence and my comment was not serious.allisoncm wrote: ↑March 21st, 2020, 3:21 pmI'd like to clarify. HBO doc done by Julius and Ethel Rosenberg's granddaughter. Not a great documentary in terms of filmmaking, but a really interesting story with some very personal touches to it.

Directed by Betty Thomas

While Sandra Bullock's trajectory is very obvious from the get-go here, she does well with the role and the film manages to subvert the romantic comedy road that it initially seems to be going down (with Viggo Mortensen seemingly pitched as an alternative boyfriend). There is still quite a bit of comedy though and very little of it works, but the drama is solid despite the familiarity of it and its inferiority to Clean and Sober with Michael Keaton.

Since TV is allowed, I'll add this one as well. It's an anime with a woman as the series director. To give you an idea of what women face in this industry, here's a quote from Yoshiaki Nishimura, one of the head producers at Studio Ghibli, one of the most beloved and successful animation studios of all time in Japan when asked if Studio Ghibli would ever hire a female director:The even more absurd thing about this is that women are actually quite prevalent in the anime industry as artists, animators and writers, just not as directors. Additionally some of the most popular manga that anime are based on were created by women like Rumiko Takahashi and CLAMP, an all-female manga collective."It depends on what kind of a film it would be. Unlike live action, with animation we have to simplify the real world. Women tend to be more realistic and manage day-to-day lives very well. Men on the other hand tend to be more idealistic – and fantasy films need that idealistic approach. I don’t think it’s a coincidence men are picked.”

it's really great actually - discovering there's still so much of the "iceburg" left to discover - and it just keeps growing.

Ah, yes, sorry, it was 4.7/10. A little bit muddy with the plot and execution. Would like to hear your thoughts if you choose to watch it. Do you know the premise?
Sister My Sister sort of along the same lines, but basically Murderous Maids in English I would give 5.5/10.

It's not funny to make comments about limiting women's abilities and then saying you're "not serious".mathiasa wrote: ↑March 21st, 2020, 7:08 pmThe production values of the movie were quite good, it was rather a conscious decision by her to be boring than a lack of competence and my comment was not serious.allisoncm wrote: ↑March 21st, 2020, 3:21 pmI'd like to clarify.
Cinephage, I'm sorry if it's some big game to you. It's clear you're not a woman and have no empathy.
I believe the comments were rude. This challenge is meant to promote the work of women, not to cut them down. Please use the off-topic thread if you wish to do so, but please keep this kind of thing out of here.

While I don't think the comment was meant seriously I think it's fair, given that this topic is specifically about women directing movies and it's women's month, to not want such comments in this particular thread even as jokes. The context makes them ruder than otherwise.

There are more and more very good women filmmakers, and besides a few that seem to get all the publicity and plaudits, the rest are mostly ignored.
Here's a list of some of my favorites in the past 3 years that deserved more attention (I have skipped those who have been anointed to carry the torch):
A Souvenir (Joanna Hogg)- Fair amount of pub, but also one of the very best films I saw from 2019
I Am Not a Witch (Rungano Nyoni)- some publicity, but deserving of more
Madeline's Madeline ( Josephine Decker )- Ditto above
Yeo-haeng-ja ( Ounie Lecomte)- Poignant autobiographical drama about childhood abandonment
Vazante (Daniela Thomas)- I've done my best (without success) to promote this film for well over a year, here.
Jia nian hua (Vivian Qu)- One of the brightest new voices in China
Zama (Lucrecia Martel)- One of my very favorite contemporary filmmakers, who deserves a lot more attention than she gets
Estiu (Carla Simon)- Another poignant portrait of a childhood at risk
Private Life (Tamara Jenkins)- one of many good female filmmakers showcased on netflix
The Land of Steady Habits ( Nicole Holofcener)- ditto above
Big Men (Rachel Boynton)- There have been a good number of women documentary filmmakers. Here's one more
My Happy Family (Nana Ekvtimishvili)- a netflix gem from Georgia
Girlhood (Céline Sciamma )- this director getting attention, now
Teströl és lélekröl ( Ildikó Enyedi)- ditto above
Los Perros (Marcela Said)- absolutely deserving of more attention
Even the Rain ( Icíar Bollaín)- ditto above
Lore (CAte Shortland)- A Very compelling WW2 drama about nazi children trying to survive at the end of the war
L'Avenir (Mia Hansen-Love)- One of the best young filmmakers
Mustang (Deniz Gamze Ergüven)- Adolescent awakening in repressive Turkey
Chevalier (Athina Rachel Tsangari)- Biting comedy about men and their masculinity
Stories We Tell (Sarah Polley)- One of my favorite films of the last decade
6 Favorites from the 2000's
Valeska Grisebach got some attention for Western, her most recent film, but I liked Longing (her previous film) even more
Everyone Else (Maren Ade)- before Toni Erdmann, there was....
The Secret Life of Words (Isabel Coixet)- her best in my opinion
Brodre (Susan Bier)- she has several very good ones from the 2000's
The Intruder (Claire Denis)- maybe her masterpiece
Enlightenment Guaranteed (Doris Dorrie)- I like many of hers very much
Have probably forgotten quite a few, even though I am only considering the best of what I have seen in the last 3-4 years.

A lot of guys can’t relate to movies by female directors because there are often very different sensibilities at work. One of the things I appreciate about many women filmmakers is how they find ways to delve into internal dynamics of things as opposed to just focusing on the external action. They also see women differently, which is refreshing.
I can see from the posts in the thread that lynne Ramsey's, You Were Never Really Here is a favorite, and I'm wondering what people see as the "woman's touch" in this one?
For me, it comes back to the way she was able to delve into the central character through the nature of the imagery, sound, music, and editing (and props to the males working on those specific jobs).

I would say, try La Mujer sin Cabeza again at a time when you are feeling wide awake and willing to venture down a very unique path.blocho wrote: ↑March 2nd, 2020, 4:38 pmIf I really didn't like La Mujer sin Cabeza, is there a chance I would like Zama?John Milton wrote: ↑March 2nd, 2020, 8:04 am 10. La Mujer sin Cabeza (2008)
Ever since watching The Story of Film: An Odyssey, The Headless Woman has been on my watchlist. Having seen Lucrecia Martel’s Zama two years ago, only increased my anticipation. La Mujer is a very different film from Zama, a confusing psychological art thriller about a woman suffering a mental breakdown after believing she might have killed a kid in a hit and run. Not one for those who demand absolute narrative clarity and steady plot resolution, but a great recommendation for the rest.
4*
Many of my own favorite films are those I didn’t like the first time I saw them, mostly because they were operating in a different way that I just couldn’t get into the first time.
Think of Bunuel’s UnChien Andalou, and the spitting of the eye. This is a great film, and I’d be glad to send you my review if you are interested.

Directed by Drew Barrymore

Descended from a long line of actors, it is possible that Barrymore found something to relate to in this tale of a teen realising her own ambitions beyond her parents' plans, but the film offers a formulaic story through and through with the protagonist's dual lies (to her team about her age; to her parents about the team) resolved far too easily and neatly. Barrymore also relies too heavily on montages set to corny music, plus there is a lifeless romance.
