The VIII^th Academy Awards Challenge



Goal
Watch as many Academy Award nominated movies as possible.

Rules
- A feature film (anything over 40 minutes) counts as one entry.
- A total of 60 minutes of short films counts as one entry.
- Rewatches are allowed.
- There were some titles throughout the years (Tuba Atlantic, Un lugar en el mundo, Young Americans, Stout Hearts and Willing Hands) which lost their nominations. These titles are not eligible.
- Post the years of your watches.
- Do not edit posts to add new watches, just create a new one.

Thanks for hosting, shugs. I'm in and will be focusing on completing the Best Pictures, Best Foreign Pictures and Best Cinematography lists, which should be doable. I'll see from there, then.

I've been planning to start checking pending stuff by number of official toplists and there's a lot of overlap with this particular challenge. I'll be in.

Unless there's a rare chance a winner I haven't seen pops up. There's only 21 left. The most recent winner I've seen was back in July. I've seen all nominated films from this year except for 3. Two foreign, neither of which is going to beat Parasite, and a short doc, which may or may not win.

It starts! First in.

NOTE: For this challenge, I will only be including one nominated category per film in orange. This is my way of trying to make things fun for me. The orange will indicate the category where I think the film's Oscar nomination is most deserving. Of course, I can only make this choice if a film has more than one Oscar nod.

1. The Irishman (2019) Best Supporting Actor



Covering several decades and many side characters, this film tackles a very large canvas and certain subplots -- particularly the protagonist's preteen daughter -- often feel neglected and shied over, but there is a lot to like here. Pacino's larger-than-life performance as the intimidating Hoffa is a real highlight, there are some very well edited bits like Hoffa's wife nervously turning an ignition key and the reverse ageing visual effects are impressive.

I am in. This used to be my favorite challenge, but since Comcast moved Turner Classic Movies off its basic package to a sports and entertainment package that you would have to pay an extra $10 a month, I am sad that I will not be able to watch some harder to find films on TCM. I eventually wanted to have a year where I had seen all of the movies they showed for the 31 Days of Oscar. At this point I have seen 284 out of 335. My TiVo would like to point out that I still have 86 films recorded off of TCM still left to watch, including 14 of the 51 unchecked movies for this month.

1. Kinsey (2004) Best Supporting Actress - Laura Linney [nom]

Wife has been wanting to watch this for a bit, so we did. I've seen it before (in the theater no less), but haven't seen it since, so it was a pretty fresh viewing for me. Loved the story Alfred Kinsey and his sex research and history of it, though the film seemed to try to do just a bit too much. The emotional tones at the end felt forced and not set up particularly well early on. But some clever writing and hilarious moments to it and worth watching. Linney was pretty good in it.

1. Last year at Marienbad / L' année dernière à Marienbad (Alain Resnais, 1961) - Nominated for Best Original Screenplay

So this was an old pending one, that I had even started a few years ago till I realized that I wasn't in the mood for the absolute non-linearity this film represents. Now I've enjoyed it a lot as one of the most daring and defining experiments in narrative I've ever seen, a story without a beginning, an end or even an expectation. Enigmatic without even trying to set an enigma, because there's nothing set in this narrative. Gorgeous, elegant, disturbing at some points, a very stimulating piece of avant-garde cinema that is as much of a challenge now as it was in the early 60s. 9/10

Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson are a large reason why this film works so well, both using the subtlest of facial inflections to convey volumes in their non-dialogue scenes, mostly notably when they listen to their lawyers argue their case. The film is a tad one-sided with Driver often painted as bending over backwards and never really wanting the divorce, but Johansson has her strong moments in which she is allowed to her express her side.

Young Americans (1967) - it even won, but was released a year to early so it lost both it's win and nomination
Stout Hearts and Willing Hands (1931) - nobody is sure why, but before the awards the production company themselves removed it and replaced it with something else.

Surprisingly maudlin for Lynch, and comes close to completely missing what's actually interesting here, which is the question of how really different the exposure of this man to good society (and to us) is from his freakshow days. It's there, but not explored enough.
