March Challenge: None
But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!

19. #334: Bis ans Ende der Welt - Until the End of the World (Wim Wenders, 1991) 7.5/10 ... Incredibly ambitious, fantastic soundtrack, but definitely longer than it needs to be (I watched Wenders' only approved version, which is nearly 5 hours!)

1. SHORTS 5+6+9+10+12+23=65 minutes
a) Ghost (Takeshi Ito, 1984)
b) Aphex Twin: Come to Daddy (Chris Cunningham, 1997)
c) Jack Frost (Ub Iwerks et al, 1934)
d) Spacy (Takeshi Ito, 1981)
e) The Bloody Olive (Vincent Bal, 1997)
f) World of Tomorrow Episode Two: The Burden of Other People's Thoughts (Don Hertzfeldt, 2017)
A pretty solid collection of shorts; only the Aphex Twin really underwhelmed - don't really find the music that interesting nor the filmmaking. I love Ito's work, have seen a couple of others earlier - Ghost was pretty amazing and I watched it twice in a row; Spacy was perhaps a little long for what it was, started to give me a headache, but I definitely admire where this guy is going. The Iwerks cartoon was nice, not necessarily a favorite but cool; The Bloody Olive was entertaining, if quite obvious where in it's particular unpredictability, if that makes sense. a) and f) have a good chance of making my list next time; b-e are likely shit out of luck.
2. The Stone Tape (Peter Sasdy, 1972)
Like the much more famous Quatermass films and TV serials from writer Nigel Kneale, this low-budget TV movie combines horror and science fiction elements in a very interesting way, bringing to the fore psychic resonance and ESP powers in some ways similar to what we see in Quatermass and the Pit. It's a really solid film overall, though I think it comes down a bit in the ending, and it's refreshing to have a female lead (Jane Asher, really good here) in a genre film from this era who isn't just a pretty face - in fact she's the computer programmer for the group - and who is in fact the most competent and most correct in her assessments of the ghostly presence haunting an old manor where a technical team is trying to create some kind of new recording medium to compete with the Japanese (hence the "stone tape" title). Not as good as the last Quatermass film but to my taste as good as or better than the first two. Now I have to get around to watching the serials. Probably not good enough to make my list.
3. Istoria mias kalpikis liras / The Counterfeit Coin (Yorgos Tzavellas, 1955)
While the first segment in this roundelay film about a counterfeit gold sovereign (presented often in gold tint in an otherwise b/w film), in which we meet the maker of the coin and those who influenced him in it's creation, does go on a bit, overall I found this pretty delightful, if fairly typical in it's messages that money doesn't buy happiness, that people are more important than possessions, etc. The story about the beggar and the hooker is the most amusing, the one about the girl (Elli Lambeti, an incredible presence here and in the two Cacoyannis films she made over the next couple of years) from a rich family who marries the poor and uncompromising painter is the most emotionally resonant. While solid, most likely not solid enough to make my list.
4. O drakos / The Ogre of Athens (Nikos Koundouros, 1956)
The best film I've seen so far in this challenge, this is a mistaken identity story that again has some noir-like characteristics - in fact it's listed as noir in some sources - but is ultimately a tragedy of the powerless and lonely just wanting a little slice of the pie and being denied even that. The "ogre" or "dragon" is apparently a powerful criminal - we never see him, but we do see a meek little bank clerk who looks just like him, and who takes a short ride to hell because of this mistake. What I liked most about this was that it's quite easy to imagine that there is no real "dragon", that he's just a story made up by the cops, or by the criminals, for political ends; and I liked the element of fooling oneself, as our man gets a taste of being the big man, knows it's going to go wrong, but... a moth to the flame. This is hard to describe, it's a film of expressions and emotions on faces and shadows, but it's memorable enough to warrant a place in my mind and a return trip some day. Good chance it will make my list.
5. Ilektra (Michael Cacoyannis, 1962)
I may have read the Euripedes play back in college - certainly some bits of this fine adaptation seemed familiar - but I can't say for sure. Hard for me to say too much about this, I'm not really familiar enough with Greek tragedy and it's conventions, and I found some of the dialogue and the overtly stagy acting in this story of spurned daughter of a murdered king seeking revenge on her mother and stepfather a little dense and strange; however Irene Papas as Ilektra burns through the staginess like a fire through silk, and the desolate settings are beautifully captured by Walter Lassally's camera, and the modernist but folk-inflected score by Mikis Theodorakis is great as well. Not likely to make my list.
6. Meandre (Mircea Saucan, 1966)
Another film most notable for it's photography - also b/w like every film I've watched for this challenge, but also full of odd angles and weird stagings of events, and repetitions. Maybe I was too tired or wasn't concentrating that well but this story of an architect and his struggles with his wife (??) and a younger man - son? - mostly lost me, but it's definitely something I'll come back to for the beauty of the imagery and some great long takes and deep focus shots. Won't make the list, at least not based on this one viewing.
7. O fovos / The Fear (Kostas Manoussakis, 1966)
This will probably tie with O drakos as the best film of this challenge for me, an intense murder-drama about a wealthy farm family - a heavy-drinking and gambling father, long suffering mother, virginal and angry and perhaps rather slow son, beautiful daughter who is mostly away in the big city, and an adopted deaf-mute daughter who seems to have something of the saint in her - at least according to the local village people. The son is mad with desire and can find nobody to be with --- the father unknowingly is showing him the way of force and brutality --- and it all goes in a direction that isn't going to surprise but remains compelling through excellent performances and camerawork that really makes us feel a part of this isolated rural area. And another film with an excellent modern score that reflects older musics, by Yannis Markopoulos. Likely to make the list.
8. Deadly Prey (David Prior, 1987)
Had no idea this was on the list, who the hell voted for this
? Anyway, I've known about this for a few years, being a die-hard fan of RedLetterMedia's Best of the Worst since it began, and this was one of their earliest finds, circa 2012-3 or so. Got a copy somewhere a couple of years ago and this was as good a time as any - and it's pretty much just as awesome as they describe it, a z-grade Rambo rip-off with elements of Predator and - the title is the clue - the best of all of these kinds of one-man-against-an-army films, Cornel Wilde's The Naked Prey. Our lead guy even runs around through the forest mostly naked. One thing the RLM guys didn't mention is how the whole thing is horribly post-dubbed - by the actors themselves in most cases I think, but it's more obvious than it should be that the sound isn't live. Another thing they don't mention is the presence of the great Cameron Mitchell as the cop, father-in-law to our one-man-army, who has one of the best scenes in the movie, declaiming a long speech to one of the faceless villains before summarily executing him. Maybe the RLM guys didn't know Mitchell at the time, he became a fixture on the show later, as well he should. Anyway this definitely hits the so-bad-it's-good sweet spot for me, but I don't know if I'd put it on my own list, that involves some re-thinking for me.

This is it for me this round.
Congrats to blueboybob for beating me to third with his stamina over these last few days of the challenge. And of course, congrats to 72a and Trav for coming 1st and 2nd.
Unfortunately, I got to finish this challenge on the worst film that I have seen this month.
55. The Living World (2003)

This is an undeniable curio with its telling of a medieval story in the present day, but the acting is incredibly stilted, with deadpan/expressionless line delivery throughout, and one child actor aside, everyone is completely unemotional. The dialogue often feels silly too, e.g. "bread is life; like words". Everything is filmed in an oddly distanced way too; there is even a 'big' swordfight that is only show through elongated close-ups without swordplay.
Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? You've gotta be kidding.

Unfortunately, I got to finish this challenge on the worst film that I have seen this month.

Thanks for hosting, 72a.
To take away the bitter the taste of the last film that I viewed, here are my top 5 first time viewings from this Challenge:
x The Bedford Incident (1965, James B. Harris)
x Popcorn (1991, Mark Herrier; Alan Ormsby)
x Plunder Road (1957, Hubert Cornfield)
x Mea Maxima Culpa (2012, Alex Gibney)
x Crime and Punishment (1935, Joseph von Sternberg)
Curiously, none of these were challenge doubles or triples.

Our taste in movies often match, but I find it interesting that we can disagree so much on the same movie.

62. Intimate Lighting (1965) - 6/10
That’s it for me as well. Great challenge with two new favorites and lots of superb films. Thanks for hosting, 72aicm - and congratulations on first place. Thanks to blueboybob and sol I saw a few more than I had initially planned.

8. Deadly Prey (David Prior, 1987)
Cute story about a kid and his family, with the kid having fantasies about Don Quixote, the Three Musketeers, etc - encouraged to one extent or other both by his rather rough father and his much gentler, laid-back bohemian uncle. If you read the IMDb plot description you'll get the basic idea - there's corruption and deceit in the world, and both his parents and many others around him are a part of it, with only the uncle being true and honorable - though he of course is seen as a lazy bum by others. It's a nice little film but I can't say I got anything particularly special out of it. Nice feel for the big old city - Sofia I presume - and with a loose shooting style that reminded me of some French films of this period. Not going to make my list.
10. Reconstituirea / Reconstruction (Lucien Pintile, 1968)
Two young men have gotten in a drunken fight, and hurt the barman at a cafe out in some suburban or rural environs, with a lake and river, forest and hills nearby, and the film describes a re-enactment of their crime a few days later which is being filmed in the hopes of curbing other young wastrels' alcoholism and violence. This is a tough little film that I probably watched too late, and perhaps could have used a little background to appreciate more; it's clearly making some arguments against the bureaucracy and criminal justice sytem of the regime but I couldn't understand the details, and why we have a beautiful bikini-clad girl flitting around the margins of the frame nearly all the time was also beyond me. Interestingly shot and the kind of film I generally like, I just couldn't get enough out of it on one viewing to say much more than "neat, but what's it all about?" I definitely think I'll return to this at some point, but right now I can't put it on my list.

That's kind of LOL to me because most of the reason why I ended up watching so much was that blueboybob was constantly on my tail, trying to overtake me. And he did in the end.

024. #439. Roar (1981) ya know the critic's cliche of "it has to be seen to be believed"? that doesn't count for anything other than this movie anymore. what the fuck. it wasn't necessarily good, but still an absolute must-watch.
025. #72. Tretya meshchanskaya (1927) to ebbywebby, ya know they had radio in 1927. and headphones. also, that's the thing worth singling out?
026-028. #716. Unknown Chaplin (1983) the first episode was great, diminishing returns on the format due to lack of material related to said format.
029-038. #464. Connections (1978) This is the thing you need to watch on the list. Really fantastic and I was initially repelled because I thought it was 50 minutes (icm runtime!!!), not 10 episodes but it drew me in enough to make me want to watch 8-ish more hours. There's two more series as well!
039. #283. Valkoinen peura (1952)
040. #281. Zítra vstanu a oparím se cajem (1977) these last two were very very close to favorites.
I feel like I'm forgetting something but I don't remember. oh well!
Thanks for hosting, 72aicm!

As far as ones I've seen this month that I'd add to my list (if I remember to update it), Macario, Kdo chce zabít Jessii?, World of Tomorrow Ep 2 and El Incidente would probably make the cut. Maybe Miss Zombie and Flying Luna Clipper if I'm in a particularly weird mood.
