It starts! First in. :)

1. One Point O (2004)

Image

This film begins on a somewhat Kafkaeque note as our protagonist keeps finding mysterious empty packages in his locked and secured apartment. Things only become weirder as he begins to investigate his neighbours... and to reveal much more would give away key points. Suffice it to say that the film really gets inside its protagonist's fragile mind and the film is fantastically visualised with foreboding darkened corridors and unusual colours.

Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? Yes.

Uncut GemsShow
1. One Point O (2004)

2. Girlfriends (1978)

Image

I thought this oozed potential as a personal identity study with a well cast Melanie Mayron forced to reevaluate and reconsider her place in the world, and yet I thought that the film mostly just touched on various ideas and was never particularly daring. Still, I liked the lesbian hitchhiker, played by the always solid Amy Wright, and the married, much older rabbi with wandering eye, played by Eli Wallach, who does a fantastic Marcel Marceau routine.

Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? No. I thought this was only decent and it's already on three permanent Official Lists aside from 500<400.

Incredible start into the new year. What a journey this one was. Will be added to my 500<400 list.

Uncut GemsShow
1. One Point O (2004)
2. Girlfriends (1978)

3. Meantime (1983)

Image

This Mike Leigh telepic tugs at working class issues that would carry on his theatrical features soon to come and is curious as a precursor to High Hopes and Life is Sweet. While both those superb movies showcase multiple likeable characters, that is the weakest point of Meantime. The possibly autistic younger brother (played well by Tim Roth) is the only really sympathetic character here, with too much bickering and yelling from others for my liking.

Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? The film has 403 checks and is no longer eligible.

Uncut GemsShow
1. One Point O (2004)
2. Girlfriends (1978)
3. Meantime (1983)

4. 4 Little Girls (1997)

Image

Through interviews with surviving community members, Spike Lee reconstructs what the times were like in Birmingham, AL leading up to a Klan attack on a church that killed four girls. We get a vivid picture of what happened by listening to those who found body parts, a distressed mother who recounts a brick embedded in a girl's head etc, but this is not a very cinematic documentary - mostly just talking heads and the occasional bit of archive footage.

Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? No. I thought it was just good (not great) and it is already on one permanent Official List.

Steve Buscemi and Chloë Sevigny turn in measured performances here, but is young Charlie Plummer who makes the greatest impression, striking a perfect balance between vulnerability and maturity as he tries to make it by himself in the world. The second half of the film is not quite as strong as the build-up with some repetitiveness, but I liked this a lot overall, especially the gorgeous dusk and twilight shots as per the promotional posters.

Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? Yes. I wonder though if it will still have under 400 checks come September.

6. Plunder Road (1957)

The nearly dialogue-free opening stretch here is absolutely breathtaking, reminiscent of The Wages of Fear as some criminals carefully transport explosives along rugged terrain and in the rain. Things become a little placid after this stretch with the characters conversing at length about their sons and sport, however, tension picks up as getaway obstacles begin to surface; particularly nail-biting is an encounter with an elderly gas attendant.

Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? Maybe. I'm not generally big into noir, but this was very good.

1. Cowards Bend the Knee (2003) #653
I like the Guy Madden aesthetic, so this worked for me - quick cuts with very interesting imagery. Only my second feature-length of his, but I did wish for just a bit more substance like he has in other films.

Everything begins very comical and slapstick here with pratfalls and split pants as the protagonist begins spying on a man who he thinks is a subversive. As the film progresses though and his paranoia builds, the film becomes more serious in tone and sad with the way he puts his family, health and job on the line due to his conviction that the man is guilty. The final scene is far funnier than it is sad or haunting, but this is pretty interesting all the same.

Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? Yes. Surprised that this isn't in the list already.

Count me in. One of my goals for 2020 is to work on the 500<400 list so this challenge fits in perfectly with my viewing habits.

1. Masquerade in Vienna (1934) - 7/10 A fun melodrama which explores an inventive case of mistaken identity. Not quite good enough to warrant inclusion on my list but it was still a great way to start off the new year.

2. Os Verdes Anos (1963) - I will reserve judgement on this until we reach the WC round it is competing in.

The initial dilemma is intriguing here as killer Steve Cochran does not know at first that witness Ginger Rogers saw his face; the stakes change though as he admits his guilt with the film instead being about whether Rogers is prepared to dob him in for the sake of her sister. While this is an interesting conflict of interest, Cochran is so one-dimensionally slimy and evil that dobbing him in always seems like the best option and no hard decision at all.

Will I be adding this film to my 500<400 list? No. Fairly good though; amazing final shot and Rogers is definitely at her best.

But at the bottom, the immanent philosopher sees in the entire universe only the deepest longing for absolute annihilation, and it is as if he clearly hears the call that permeates all spheres of heaven: Redemption! Redemption! Death to our life! and the comforting answer: you will all find annihilation and be redeemed!
