Well, the first one anyway - one of these inside a month is enough. I have no idea which serial, or which parts of which serial, or whether it was a whole serial or one of the cut-up b-movie 70 minute versions that I saw back when we lived in Chicago in the early 70s, but I distinctly remember the scene, repeated many times, of the rocket ship as it circles and lands in the cheap papier-mâché sets

and even more vividly I've always remembered the buzzing sound of the ships. I first watched the three serials straight through around 2002 or so, on VHS from the local video store in Burlington, VT, and then I watched them again around a decade later on the OK Image DVDs, the same source I have now. It'd be nice to see these transferred in HD with some extras but I'm not holding my breath, and the DVDs are OK. What to say about them...if it's good acting, or storytelling, or direction you're looking for, well...these are above the standard quality for serials for sure and the production design, sets and FX are about as good as you get in 1936 which is to say certainly very dated but fun if you can cast yourself back to those days. The acting is probably the hardest thing to take though to be fair I think the very quick shooting schedules and frankly the attitude behind these things ("they're just for kids, they won't notice") is a big part of their flaws. Charles Middleton as Ming is most memorable and probably gives the best performance but it's all ham; Jean Rogers as Dale is simply horrendous, with a deer-in-the-headlights look plastered on her Harlowe-esque countenance most of the time. It's fun to look at the storytelling flaws - one thing this film shows as well as most serials is the lack of any coherent time/space values - it feels like it's all taking place over, I dunno, a couple of days at most (we never see anyone sleep), with just a couple of costume changes for the females and none for most of the male actors, with people flying all over space from planet to planet in seemingly a few seconds or minutes time, and Zarkov inventing a new gadget in every episode in the matter of 5 minutes - new rays, new weapons, etc. But it's a hell of a lot of fun if you can buy into the whole serial idea, probably still among my 5 favorite Hollywood examples from the era.

All three of those Flash Gordon serials are a lot of fun and work far more often than they should. Middleton is an excellent Ming, not quite up to Max von Sydow in the role but who would be?

If you watched the '36 serial you are shorting yourself some points. Serials are usually counted similar to mini-series or TV where the episodes are under 40 minutes. That one runs 4 hours plus so it's worth 4 points.

Yeah I love these, really like most all serials though I don't watch them that often. Probably will watch an unseen one next before doing another Flash. Do you have any particular favorites outside of the SF genre (I've seen most of those, at least the ones that are available)? Particularly the spy stuff, haven't seen much in that area.

Hi flav, how did you find The Incident to be?
I really liked the script but I thought the directing was a little flat and cheap looking. Overall still pretty solid though. I tend to dig weird time loop type stories (I know technically this isn't but it plays like one).

I never would have thought of this one for this challenge. Nice outside-the-box choice!
I always look forward to this challenge more than most so I keep a running list of stuff to watch for it. This is one that's been on that list for quite a while actually. Gene Kelly's animation/ live action synchronized dance routines are pretty entertaining.

Most of my favorites would be in sci/fi or pulp genres with Adventures of Captain Marvel and The Phantom at the top of the list. I also really enjoyed Jungle Girl and Drums of Fu Manchu. Two spy recommendations would be Spy Smasher - this one is from Republic and directed by the great William Witney so you know it has a lot of exciting action - and Holt of the Secret Service - this one is more hardboiled with a lot of noirish elements and I particularly enjoyed the bulldog tenacity of leading man Jack Holt.

It's one of my favorite challenges too. I also keep lists for upcoming challenges that I add to year round.

Kelly is really incredible. I'll watch nearly any musical with him knowing it will have lots of athletic dancing and usually a lot of humor too. I've come to admire Fred Astaire just as much but for a long time Kelly was my main man when it came to dancing. I'm gradually finding my way back into musicals after a long hiatus when I just wasn't connecting with them so I will probably be watching a few in some of the upcoming challenges. I'm disappointed the Musical challenge didn't get voted in this year but maybe it will in 2021. I'll start compiling lists just in case.

This benefits from a great setting and set design, often atmospherically lit. Robert Pattinson is also very solid, especially early on, bonding with his daughter. The flashbacks are less engaging though and take up more screen time. Juliette Binoche is interesting, seeming increasingly unhinged, but much remains unexplained and none of the other astronauts are well developed. Not boring, but I wish this focused more on the father/daughter.

The script is a total mess, but it has such a pure sense of fun and sincerity to it that it's still hard not to like at least a little bit.

I ended up really liking this one. Might be the best Sci-fi Channel Original that I've seen (not saying a whole lot though). I tend to like these type of things that involves a kind of hidden world building in plain sight. Neverwhere is another one this kind of reminded me of that I also liked.

61. Alligator (1980)

Image

This splatter horror begins on a tongue-in-cheek nod as a grandmother watching an alligator attack obliviously complains "they could do without the fake blood". There is also some very dark humour after the alligator escapes (a pool incident). Robert Forster is fine too as the burnt-out lead, but he lacks romantic chemistry with his co-star and - for all the film's attempts to flesh out its human characters - the giant reptile is most sympathetic here.
This is one of my favorites from when I was a kid. It aired on TV a few times when I was in grade school and I managed to see it at least twice during 4th-5th-6th grade. I love some of the quotes and the gator is pretty cool... the sequence when

they are down in the sewers and the shadow of its head is cast on the wall
was really creepy to me back in the day. Must rewatch this one. I wish a R1 bluray of this would be released.

Must rewatch this one. I wish a R1 bluray of this would be released.
Actually, it's either a Region 1 DVD or Region A Blu-ray that you want. ;) Point taken though; the 240p copy that I watched was very blocky/choppy and probably wasn't the best way to experience the movie. But yeah, it is an experience for sure, no matter what reservations I might have about it.

This is an undeniable curio with its telling of a medieval story in the present day, but the acting is incredibly stilted, with deadpan/expressionless line delivery throughout, and one child actor aside, everyone is completely unemotional. The dialogue often feels silly too, e.g. "bread is life; like words". Everything is filmed in an oddly distanced way too; there is even a 'big' swordfight that is only show through elongated close-ups without swordplay.

Well, I mean the Indian challenge this year is basically a musical challenge unless you stick to old Bengali movies :D

Haven't seen Jungle Girl or those spy films, though I've known about Spy Smashers for a long time - Holt is the one that sounds really interesting though given that you use the magic word noir. Have to look for that - thanks!

TCM. Jason Evers - acting at fever pitch through much of this weird piece of schlock, like most of the cast - plays a doctor who just won't let the patient being operated on by his boring old conventional father die... you see, he knows the secret of bringing people back to life! And also transplanting every kind of organ or body part you can think of, and so when he and his fiancee get in a terrible car accident conveniently just outside of his palatia (on the outside - the room we see just inside looks like a cheap hotel room) country house equipped with it's own experimental laboratory, he knows he can save her even though... well, you'll get the idea from the title. This is basically an excuse for lots of cheesecake modelling (he has to go find a suitable body you see) and dancing, and hyperbolic statements about man playing god and such, and it's lots of fun if you enjoy this kind of thing. Anthony La Penna probably gives the most ripe performance as Kurt, the tragic assistant. I wonder if Stuart Gordon is a fan - I definitely felt a bit of Re-Animator while watching this. The second film I've seen this month that goes on my so-bad-it's-good list, that's pretty crazy given that we aren't even doing a low ratings challenge right now.

I see you have my score lower, but I have 6 points in (less than 40m) TV gained from 6 hours and 17 minutes in total if that's the reason.
Nah, it was a typo.

Rankings updated everyone, please check them.

Well, I mean the Indian challenge this year is basically a musical challenge unless you stick to old Bengali movies :D
Also an Epic challenge since so many of them are around 3+ hours!
Yea, I can't say I'm super excited about that one but I think I'm gonna force myself to really dig into Bollywood and try to find some gold. I feel like I'm always complaining about Bollywood being terrible, but really I've mostly only seen super popular stuff like 3 Idiots and Lagaan. It's like people complaining about Hollywood having only seen stuff like Transformers and Shawshank Redemption.

Try to find Khuda Gawah (God is My Witness). It's almost as if Sergio Leone made a Bollywood film and is by far my favorite. Unfortunately, it was the first epic Bollywood musical that I saw and set the standard very high for me.

Well I haven't seen much Bollywood, but I like it more than most people here - I've yet to see a film that I've outright hated, and I've seen a few that I liked a lot (though no masterpieces yet), so I'll definitely be catching some for that challenge assuming I play that month at all. So this shoots up to a high priority, let's just hope it's still on Prime when the challenge comes around.

I'll add it to my queue and see how it goes. There are a few I have some hope for. I actually liked No Smoking and am interesting in watching Gangs of Wasseypur from the same director. I've heard it's good.
