28. Chopping Mall (1986)

Image

Curiously released only months before RoboCop, this horror film plays out like a feature length version of the board room meeting in which the ED-209 goes haywire. While its satire is not quite a sharp as RoboCop's, the film treats the idea with a lot of deliciously dark humour; "smoking's bad for your health" comes in a cutaway after a janitor is left frying by a robot on the floor. Alas, 90% of the film is just teenagers trying to blow robots up.
Don't ask why/how, but I just realized that, in Chopping Mall, Paul Bartel and Mary Woronov reprised their roles as the Blands, which they established in Eating Raoul (and that's a much better film than Chopping Mall, sol, if you haven't seen it, though I prob need to rewatch CM).
I don't know. I would say that Eating Raoul is only a slightly better film than Chopping Mall. Then again, I thought that Mall was pretty neat, and I recall wanting a little more of the titular action in the Paul Bartel black comedy. ;)

26. The Tunnel, by Maurice Elvey (1935) 7/10

This is a very interesting movie, from a historical point of view. Its Pacificism, the huge sets and its idea of a UK-USA Tunnel are very surprising... The drama and direction are not really that brilliant, though.

27. Child's Play, by Lars Klevberg (2019) 7,5/10

The plot is rather silly, but the direction is just brilliant. A smart use of colours and night effects, a solid characterization of unusual supporting roles, and very inventive death scenes. Given the standards the director had to respect in this mindless reboot, I must say I'm impressed but his talent.

With its catacombs and dozens of darkened corridors, the museum here makes for a great horror setting and the central gala event is amusingly set inside a room with an entrance like a creature's mouth. The action does not really begin until halfway in though with much dialogue as the police investigate mounting deaths at the museum. There are also tiring running gags (the chief investigator losing custody of his dog) that aren't funny.

For a film made on a budget, this is a surprisingly enjoyable affair; there are visible boom mics, a ton of unexplained stuff and the plot feels like a poor rehash of The Terminator - but there is much ingenuity too. The water-submerged future Lost Angeles is a sight to see, the "long second" watch device is very cool, and the film has some real madcap humour. Mostly notably, a fight with a zombie mall Santa with kids joyously watching the altercation.

If you haven't already, make you leave some time to watch Night of the Demon (1980) a.k.a. the one where Bigfoot rips a guys dick off!
That one was already on my watchlist but I'll move it higher up and make more of an effort to see it just for that. Have you seen Search For the Beast? It has some gratuitous definitely non-PC footage of Bigfoot "doing" a woman from behind that is wonderfully ridiculous.
Hm... I haven't seen that one but it sounds like The Geek which is an actual bigfoot rape porno from the '70s. Although I still haven't worked up the nerve to watch that one yet either...
Part of what makes that scene so odd is that the rest of the film is more focused on the hero - a middle-age, slightly over-weight, horseback-riding backwoods type and his search for Bigfoot and multiple rescues of the female lead from some militant hunters. In short, it's all over the place. I suspect the director's name is a cover-up for it being a vanity project for the main actor. It's a turkey, no doubt, but often a hoot to watch.

EDIT: I'll be posting my last two days viewings later today - as soon as i get them organized.

FTV:4:Star Trek: Truther Into Darkness (2013) 1.

Image

Falling to wipe away his Twitter history, co-writer/nutter Roberto Orci’s “Truther” beliefs cast a foul smell across the new frontier. Hitting the opening with a “blow back” attack in a script co-written with fellow bumbling hacks Alex “The Mummy” Kurtzman and Damon “Prometheus” Lindelof (what a talented trio!) the writers set the timer off for Khan’s arrival to be the thinnest “allegorical” facade for a 9/11 Truther. Entering the “Deep State” of Star Fleet keeping Section 31 in a normal looking government office building, the writers push the message hard that Admiral Marcus is the “puppet-master”, pulling the strings of the savage warrior who did covert missions to help Starfleet prepare for war against the Soviets/” Klingons” /now has rebelled and is launching terrorist attacks for his 72 virg,I mean “72 pod people” Khan (yep, that’s the subtly we’re facing here.)

Giving everyone on the Enterprise a lobotomy, the writers turn the ship to blindly follow “Deep State” Marcus to be used with Khan as a threat of war, leading to a utterly strange/thinly veiled re-enactment of the Gulf of Tonkin, whilst a stand-in for drone strikes takes place. When not indulging nut- job Orci’s fight against “Coincidence Theorists.”, (the term he used for people who called him out, until Orci deleted his Twitter account in 2013-on September 11th yes, he really is full Truther)the writers use Spock’s fists to pummel all humanism out of Star Trek. Ridding any chance of a discussion between the crew or different opinions on Khan to be express,

The writers also decimate the heart/mind/soul dynamic of Bones/Kirk and Spock, by replacing characterisation, for mind-numbing, idiotic violent outbursts, leaving Bones mumbling on the sidelines, Spock seeing fists as the way to get his point across, and Kirk displaying no leadership/ thoughtfulness towards his crew, before he hands out what could be largely avoided violence. Fittingly locked in a glass cell like a second-rate Hannibal Lecter knock-off, Benedict Cumberbatch gives a incredibly poor performance as Khan, destroying the intrigue and calculating intelligence of Khan, in exchange for a naff panto act, where Benny pulls his lips and gurning each time he is meant to appear threatening.

Opening by throwing the camera round like a volleyball and stating on The Daily Show “I made this film for people who don’t like Star Trek” (or those with half a brain-clearly)inept director JJ Abrams continues his prat-fall adventures into Sci-Fi franchises, keeping the real “Khan” name from being seen on screen,in order to take Trek down to his Mystery Box level. (yo JJ!, that shtick “Lost” any value years ago.) Out of his rotting Mystery Box, JJ pulls out his poke ‘em in the eye lens flair, thumping the camera on the ground like a basketball with jabbing, distracting flairs of red poking the viewer, and shoddy camera moves floating round with a inability to stop and allow moments for the Enterprise crew to be shown doing actual teamwork, in order for JJ to dump Star Trek into a dark corner.

49. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017, Luc Besson): 4.5 - Few people have been so miscast as DeHaan in this. And he also acts absolutely horrible. His counterpart Delevingne fares only slightly better. Dragging down an already poorly written CGI fest.

That's one of the most thorough (and funny) trashings of a film that I've read in a long, long time. In the best bash-a-film tradition, you've almost succeeded in making me want to watch this again, but so close to a viewing of the latest Star Wars (another splat for Abrams), I just don't have the heart for it.

Thank you very much for the comments Psycho, I spent a few days reading up on behind the scenes info, due to seriously wondering if Alex Jones had secretly written it. This is one of only 14 movies I've given a to,and man, I see what people mean by Jar Jar Abrams (poor DCEU, it's going to complete his Driving Into The Ground Trilogy.)

One bit I could not find space for, is that if two large spaceships smashed into each other, it would land with a thump due to how heavy they are, but in this & The Yawn Awakens (I found it utter "Meh") I've been shocked at how badly JJ films space battles, the Enterprise gets hammered, yet continues to glide round like it's weightless.

88. Bis ans Ende der Welt - Until the End of the World (Wim Wenders, 1991) 7.5/10 ... Incredibly ambitious, fantastic soundtrack, but definitely longer than it needs to be (I watched Wenders' only approved version, which is nearly 5 hours!)
89. Demon Seed (Donald Cammell, 1977) 7/10

31-34. Flash Gordon (Frederick Stephani, 1936) (re-watch) (245 minutes, 13 episode serial)

I've been on a bigger nostalgia kick than usual this winter, and it was time to re-visit one of my earliest sci-fi memories, the Flash Gordon serials. Well, the first one anyway - one of these inside a month is enough. I have no idea which serial, or which parts of which serial, or whether it was a whole serial or one of the cut-up b-movie 70 minute versions that I saw back when we lived in Chicago in the early 70s, but I distinctly remember the scene, repeated many times, of the rocket ship as it circles and lands in the cheap papier-mâché sets

Image

and even more vividly I've always remembered the buzzing sound of the ships. I first watched the three serials straight through around 2002 or so, on VHS from the local video store in Burlington, VT, and then I watched them again around a decade later on the OK Image DVDs, the same source I have now. It'd be nice to see these transferred in HD with some extras but I'm not holding my breath, and the DVDs are OK. What to say about them...if it's good acting, or storytelling, or direction you're looking for, well...these are above the standard quality for serials for sure and the production design, sets and FX are about as good as you get in 1936 which is to say certainly very dated but fun if you can cast yourself back to those days. The acting is probably the hardest thing to take though to be fair I think the very quick shooting schedules and frankly the attitude behind these things ("they're just for kids, they won't notice") is a big part of their flaws. Charles Middleton as Ming is most memorable and probably gives the best performance but it's all ham; Jean Rogers as Dale is simply horrendous, with a deer-in-the-headlights look plastered on her Harlowe-esque countenance most of the time. It's fun to look at the storytelling flaws - one thing this film shows as well as most serials is the lack of any coherent time/space values - it feels like it's all taking place over, I dunno, a couple of days at most (we never see anyone sleep), with just a couple of costume changes for the females and none for most of the male actors, with people flying all over space from planet to planet in seemingly a few seconds or minutes time, and Zarkov inventing a new gadget in every episode in the matter of 5 minutes - new rays, new weapons, etc. But it's a hell of a lot of fun if you can buy into the whole serial idea, probably still among my 5 favorite Hollywood examples from the era.

35. Elektra (Rob Bowman, 2005)

I got this out of the library just because it was right next to the Greek Ilektra and I thought it might be amusing to watch it while watching all these Greek films and seeing if it had anything to do with any of them, like if Elektra's name really came out of the tragic Greek heroine's story. Answer: I guess she does, her name and that of her brother (not in the film) do come from the Greek sources, but there's not a whole lot else other than general vengeance shit that you see in both ancient tragedies and loads of comics. I never bought Daredevil back in the early 80s when she was created, but I was aware of the character - this is really my first significant exposure to her. And this film has a very poor rep but...I didn't think it was all that bad. Oh, not good either and it gets an overall negative score from me, but no worse than a LOT of better-reviewed and more profitable superhero films of the last 15 years IMO. It's nicely shot, the CGI looks pretty good for 2005, and it's got Terence Stamp, and nothing can be truly awful with Terence Stamp. And Jennifer Garner is OK in the lead, she certainly can look the part anyway, but the story is the letdown as it often is for these kinds of things, just a boring typical I-have-to-fight-guy-who-it's-been-my-destiny-to-fight thing, and the way the flashbacks to Elektra's childhood are integrated really doesn't work and doesn't add much of anything to the proceedings. I wouldn't have thought it would qualify as "fantasy" but it does end up having a lot of wuxia trappings and there is indeed a lot of magical shit going on in the second half in particular.

36. Star Trek - Original Series - s1 ep4 "The Naked Time"
37. Star Trek - Original Series - s1 ep5 "The Enemy Within"

Here's where the series really starts to come together. "The Naked Time" is a massive improvement over the first three episodes, with a somewhat more interesting story (mysterious virus removes crew members' inhibitions, allowing us to see Spock display more emotion than he's shown so far, and Sulu to be a bare-chested swordsman. It's really well directed and builds to a reasonably believable climax, and it's the first episode with all of the first-year cast - including Majel Barrett and Grace Lee Whitney - getting to play.

"The Enemy Within" isn't quite as good, but still a notch above the first three, with a transporter malfunction separating Kirk into Jekyll/Hyde halves, with rather predictable results. More philosophizing than usual early in the series - about the dual nature of man - and this and the general, horror-influenced idea probably derive mostly from the episode's writer Richard Matheson, the man behind I Am Legend among many seminal works. Also a fairly brutal - by 60s TV standards anyway - attempted rape that I really didn't remember. Again a fairly well directed episode that builds to a last-minute climax.

This is a little beside the point, but your comment about the spaceship smash-up reminded me of it. When Star Trek: Generations opened I talked a friend into going to see it with me. He was an occasional Trek watcher (as was I - I'm still working on completing ST:NG!) and mostly into classics and art house cinema (as was I at the time). Afterwards he was somewhat nonplused as to why I had wanted to go see the film at the cinema and in the best theatre possible. The point was, and I did not know this would happen going in, but the point was to see that magnificent crash landing of the Enterprise saucer on the big screen. I still remember the thunder of excitement of that single scene - it had a real weight and gravitas to it that made it matter even in a film that often seemed to be mostly fluff. And I guess that's where I've worked my way back around to ST:ID and SW: Rise of Skywalker, despite several chances, neither film delivers a scene that made that deep of an impression on me. They didn't even have what became known to me and my friend as the Enterprise Crash Moment.

All three of those Flash Gordon serials are a lot of fun and work far more often than they should. Middleton is an excellent Ming, not quite up to Max von Sydow in the role but who would be?

If you watched the '36 serial you are shorting yourself some points. Serials are usually counted similar to mini-series or TV where the episodes are under 40 minutes. That one runs 4 hours plus so it's worth 4 points.

100. Alien Nation (1988) USA 667 checks [rewatch]
Sci-Fi. First "serious" alien film I ever saw, and it's basically District 9 20 years ealier. (Illegal) aliens coming and taking human jobs. Too bad they don't really use the opportunity to build a more interesting plot here. But it became a season on TV the year after, so maybe the best ideas went there. I gave it 7/10 when I was 12 since I havdn't seen anything else, but this is lackluster, more in the are of 4-5.

I see you have my score lower, but I have 6 points in (less than 40m) TV gained from 6 hours and 17 minutes in total if that's the reason.
