I kind of fizzled out here. As I basically just saw duds, there is not much to wrap up, so just some other categories

Most fun
The Meteor Man (1993) - Probably belongs in the AfAm challenge as well

Most absurd
Cats (2019) - and clearly the movie I have discussed in great detail since I went to school and had to do it, so 20 years.

Best
Mirai no Mirai (2018)

Worst
Suburban Commando (1991)

My eyes!
The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D (2005) and Spy Kids 3: Game Over (2003)

Thanks for hosting, shugs

a) World of Tomorrow Episode Two: The Burden of Other People's Thoughts (Don Hertzfeldt, 2017)
b) Trancers; City of Lost Angels (Charles Band, 1988)
c) Hardware Wars (Ernie Fosselius, 1978)
d) All Summer in a Day (Ed Kaplan, 1982)

The Hertzfeldt short continues his new series, and is his usual blend of strange, offputting comedy and extreme pathos, with the addition here of a time-travel/cloning narrative with a complexity worthy of Shane Carruth. Brilliant as usual.

The Trancers short was originally part of an anthology called Pulse Pounders which got shelved when it's production company, Empire Pictures, died; it was apparently lost for over 20 years until 2011 when a workprint was found and the segments restored, though they have not yet been put back together as originally intended. This one is on the Trancers "Squid Pack" as a bonus. It's much the same as the rest of the series - Jack Deth (Tim Thomerson) living the ideal life with Helen Hunt in the 1980s has to face a new criminal threat who wants to erase him from history - but the novelty here is that it's a woman. Umm, ok.

Hardware Wars is a short that I just remembered, having seen it when it was relatively new, probably back in college as a bonus either during the b-fest or between showings of the original Star Wars trilogy on campus. Can't say I remembered many specifics after 35+ years but there aren't many to remember - this is essentially just an extremely low-budget remake of the original Star Wars with things like hair dryers and toasters playing the role of spaceships. It'd be called a fan video / fan film now but I"m not sure that term was common in 78. An amusing bit of nostalgia for me, wouldn't even be that for people not raised on it.

All Summer in a Day is a sweet little adaptation of a Ray Bradbury story about kids living on a planet where it rains all the time, and how they react when they find that the sun really is going to come out for the first time in years. Perfectly nice if kind of silly when you think about it - how are there all these beautiful flowers without sun?

40. NBC Special Treat: Into Infinity (Charles Crichton, 1975)

And this one is DEEEEEEPPP nostalgia for me. I"m pretty sure I saw this on it's original airing in December, 1975, shortly after I turned 10, and I never entirely forgot it though like Hardware Wars it was buried pretty deep for a long time. In this case I didn't even remember the title so had no way of finding it until I figured out how to do advanced search on IMDb and spent some time looking for something about interstellar travel from the mid-70s. Bingo! And then I found a copy a while back and figured this would be a good time to watch it. I remembered that it was a family, on a spaceship going to another star, and that there was a sequence where they go through a black hole - that was it. I didn't remember (and wouldn't have known at the time) that it was a British production, directed by the great Charles Crichton, famous for his comedies, and produced by Gerry Anderson of Space: 1999 and Thunderbirds fame. Knowing that now, and then watching it again, it's not surprising that it was intended as the pilot to a TV series, which never got made - and I guess then it got picked up by NBC for their competition to ABC's wildly successful Afterschool Specials. It's as I remembered it - a family (though the relations are unclear - there are two adult men, one adult woman, two kids - I think it's a single dad with one kid, mom & dad with the other - but the way it's done I'm just not sure who belongs with who) taking the first interstellar trip to Alpha Centauri aboard a space ship that looks suspiciously like a leftover from Space: 1999. Brian Blessed is the only member of the cast that would be likely to be familiar, but this is not an acting-centered program, the characters are all pretty cardboard. You watch this for the neat (at the time - certainly very dated) effects, and for the regular doses of science fact doled out by just about every character, explaining Einstein's theory of relativity, the Doppler effect, black holes, etc etc. It feels like a lecture at times though these moments are mercifully pretty short. Anyway it's quite family-oriented and harmless, and really nothing more than a blip in the history SF television, though it probably offers one of the first mentions of black holes, and it's certainly the place I learned about them, and about photons and maybe the speed of light and the distances between stars. Another one purely for the nostalgists.

And that's it for me, thanks shugs for hosting!

29. Lancelot du Lac, by Robert Bresson (1974) 8/10

A very conceptual approach to the arthurian tales, but Bresson's style is always so fascinating to me...

And this ends my participation to this challenge. Thanks for hosting it !!

Sorry, I meant to spread this out through the month, but put off my reviews until now, when it is one big lump of trying to get things out of my head.

01. The Mandalorian S1E7: The Reckoning (2019)
02. The Mandalorian S1E8: Redemption

My husband is a big Star Wars and Boba Fett fan to the point where is one tattoo is a Mandalorian skull. It was better watching the show with him since he could explain some of the background information the series left out. This was a great series, but the couple of episodes that Jon Favreau did not write, The Gunslinger and The Prisoner, felt like filler episodes in this season, but had some information that could be explored in further seasons.

03. Inhumans E1: Behold... The Inhumans (2017)
04. Inhumans E2: Those Who Would Destroy Us (2017)
05. Inhumans E3: Divide and Conquer (2017)
06. Inhumans E4: Make Way for... Medusa (2017)
07. Inhumans E5: Something Inhumans This Way Comes (2017)
08. Inhumans E6: The Gentleman's Name Is Gorgon (2017)
09. Inhumans E7: Havoc in the Hidden Land (2017)
10. Inhumans E8: ...And Finally: Black Bolt (2017)

This season/mini-series was okay and had some interesting concepts, but it felt stretched out to make the eight episodes. I was a X-Men comic book fan, so my only knowledge of The Inhumans was Crystal since she married Quicksilver. This show was doomed when they decided to release the first two episodes in IMAX.

11. Missing Link (2019) 6/10

This film does not have the nicest looking animation and something in the story felt lacking to me. This film is about an explorer trying to redeem himself with his explorer club by finding a Bigfoot, but then agreeing to help the Bigfoot find his cousins the Yetis in the Himalayans. I understand needing to make a journey and meeting back up with characters along the way, but they could have found a ship to take them across the Pacific instead of going across the United States, Atlantic Ocean, Europe and then Asia to reach the Himalayans. I think this is the weakest of the five films the production company, Laika Entertainment, has made.

12. Safety Not Guaranteed (2012) 9/10

This film is more of a romantic comedy than a sci-fi film that I almost did not add to the challenge since it only talks about sci-fi elements until the last few minutes of the show. This film is about someone needing a partner for a time travel trip with a reporter trying to be the partner, but wondering if the person is telling the truth or insane. The film is also about looking back at a time you were in love and whether or not you can get that feeling back as in traveling back to that time.

13. The Little Prince (1975) 5/10

This film, based off a French children’s book, has a pilot downed in a desert trying to fix his plane, where he meets the Little Prince, who tells him about the different people he meets on different planets who represent elements of society. My only previous knowledge about the story was the anime series that used to play on Nickelodeon in the 1980s that I hated, that apparently had very little to do with the story and had bad English translations. This is a musical with no so get songs and I disliked the ending, which I guess was supposed to symbolize becoming an adult. The best part of the movie was Bob Fosse playing the Snake, which Michael Jackson took inspiration for the style of the “Billie Jean” music video and possibly his moonwalk.

14. On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970) 5/10

This film, based on a musical, is about a women going to a professor to be hypnotized to stop smoking, when he realizes that she has lived a past life and falls in love with this past life woman. At one point, I had the cast recording of the musical so I remembered the few, better songs that are all at the end of the film, so the beginning two-thirds drags along. The floral patterns upon floral patterns made it hard to look at the film.

15. Holy Motors (1992) 4/10

This film is about an actor who is driven around to different locations, where he puts on makeup and costumes to play different roles for an unseen audience that watches through small cameras. If you could watch the episodic moments as separate, weird performances, I think you could enjoy. If you are like me, trying to make sense between them and the entire film and looking for some sort of story line, you would be disappointed.

16. Francis (1940) 4/10

This film is about a solider in the Pacific arena of World War II where a soldier finds a talking mule, Francis, that helps him thwart Japanese military actions. This is a type of comedy film I find to not be very funny. In times of war, light entertainment that is also patriotic was successful enough to spawn six sequels over the next six years.

17. Looper (2012) 7/10

This film is about people who kill people sent back to the present time since it is hard to dispose of a body in the future. When the main character’s older self comes back, he escapes getting killed, so his current self has to hunt him down. I really liked the sci-fi elements of the story set in a futuristic city, but the film gets off track with a love story on a farm that seems out of place in the timeline.

18. The Lighthouse (2019) 7/10

This film is about two men working at a lighthouse in the late 19th century on an island, where a storm keeps one of them trapped there longer than he was supposed to be. Shot in an older style 1.19:1 aspect ratio gives the film a claustrophobic feel and you can never tell if Willem Dafoe’s character is crazy or not.

19. Into the Woods (2014) 7/10

This film is about fairy tale characters we know wishing and getting what they want in the first act, to find out in the second act that getting what you want does not always work out and not every one lives happily ever after. I have the cast recording, but have never seen the musical on stage, so I know the story and songs. I think the film is show well to show numerous people in the woods near enough to each other for use to see them all, but for them to miss each other. I was disappointed that my favorite song "Ever After" was cut from the film and the rushed time line from act one to two cut from months to days, so the characters are upset at the female giant destroying things and not that their lives are not how they thought it would be.

20. Abominable (2019) 8/10

This film is about a young woman who find an abominable that recently escaped capture and has magical powers. The young woman and her friends help take the abominable back to the Himalayans while avoiding a rich man and his hired goons trying to capture them. The animation is really great with the abominable’s powers and the storyline about family is very effective.

21. Border (2018) 5/10

This film is about a Swedish customs agent, who has a Neanderthalic appearance and can sniff out contraband and emotions like guilt. She finds child porn and is asked to help with the investigation. She also finds a male who looks like her and forms a relationship with him. In movie magic, these two storylines are interconnected, which I found aggravating. Either something was left out in the storytelling or I somehow missed how the characters are the way they are and what their actions involved.

22. Bell Book and Candle (1958) 6/10

This film about a modern day witch, who cannot fall in love, trying to break up a human relationship and eventually falling in love with the man and losing her powers. This along with I Married a Witch were the inspirations for Bewitched. This story of witches is thinly disguised as being about homosexuals. They have their own secret clubs, they cannot fall in love and they could pass off as normal people. Beyond minor magic tricks, the film is a basic romantic film where a much too attractive woman falls in love with a much too older man.

23. Riddick (2013) 6/10

This film continues Riddick’s story, getting abandoned on a planet, calling for help, killing some of his would be capturers and then working with some of them to escape the planet. This is not as good as Pitch Black, but way better than The Chronicles of Riddick. It forgoes the grandiose nature of the second film for a more world condensing atmosphere of the first. The flashback at ten minutes to explain what happened before the first ten minutes pissed me off to know end. They could have just started with the scene instead.

24. Generation X (1996) 4/10

This TV film/pilot for a non-picked up season is about a new generation of mutants in the X-Men universe. I was still an X-Men comic book fan at the time the series came out, but I had never seen the film because of the bad reviews. The film replaces two of the main characters, Husk and Chamber, with two new generic characters because their powers were too hard to reproduce with the special effects/budget at the time. The villain is played by the actor who was Max Headroom, but at this point in time, seemed like a Jim Carrey impression. With better special effects and bigger budget, this could be made into a TV series, but 25 years later, this would probably be a group that fans are not that interested in seeing.

25. Generation X Uncut (1996) 4/10

This uncut version was about twenty minutes longer, but from what I could tell had no new scenes, just extended dialogue with the racier parts kept in that might shock American audiences.

26. War for the Planet of the Apes (2014) 5/10

This film continues the story started with Rise of the Planet of the Apes. San Francisco has a small group of humans trying to restart electrical power to the city who meets the group of apes and neither side can trust the other. I really like the first film, but I did not enjoy this one because of the feeling of bad characters on both sides that want to start the inevitable war.

27. Freaky Friday (1976) 6/10

This film is about a mother and daughter who think the other has an easier life and they switch minds. This original is definitely a Disney film product of the time and some of the hijinks are not that funny. It picks up in the second half when they switch bodies but not minds. The 2003 remake is superior because the two characters interact with each other, while in this one they never once interact while they have switched places.

28. One Touch of Venus (1948) 6/10

This film is about a statue of Venus coming to life and falling in love with a department store window dresser. This film was based on a musical and feels like the inspiration for 1987’s Mannequin. The comedy and inevitable pairing off of the couples feels tired.

29. Weathering with You (2019) 7/10

This film takes place in Tokyo where it is gloomy and been raining for a while. A young boy finds a young girl who can pray for the sun and go into business bringing small amount of sunshine for people. The young girl’s powers have a limitation and a sacrifice would have to be made to or the rain would continue forever. The gloominess is so pervasive that when any sunshine is around, the colors are brilliant and otherworldly. I felt there could have been more added to the story.

30. Brewster McCloud (1970) 7/10

This film is about a young man living in the Astrodome, who wants to fly, and the police trying to solve a series of killings with bodies that have bird droppings on them. This is a weird film, but one I liked. This is a Robert Altman film that feels different than his other ones, since there is a smaller cast with more interconnected storylines and a car chase that lasts for a while. I did find it unbelievable that the main character who lives in the Astrodome had never been to AstroWorld, which was across the interstate connected by a bridge.

31. The Day of the Dolphin (1973) 4/10

This film is about a scientist teaching dolphins to talk and the corporation funding his research that wants to use them for nefarious scenarios. The score and George C. Scott were good and I enjoyed the scenes of the dolphins swimming around, but the story itself was garbage.

Ooh that one's on Prime.
I'd love to hear your reaction if you watch it.
Well I haven't seen much Bollywood, but I like it more than most people here - I've yet to see a film that I've outright hated, and I've seen a few that I liked a lot (though no masterpieces yet), so I'll definitely be catching some for that challenge assuming I play that month at all. So this shoots up to a high priority, let's just hope it's still on Prime when the challenge comes around.
Sounds like you and I are on the same page with Bollywood, except I have found the one "masterpiece" so far. I have not been watching Bollywood very much at all for the last few years because I just wasn't connecting with any musicals anymore (except maybe Singin' in the Rain and the original Rocky Horror Picture Show). But, when I was watching Bollywood I had a lot of fun with them. I even saw a few without subtitles - it helped that they were knock-offs of popular American movies I had seen so the plots were easy to follow. for the most part I can always count on enjoying the spectacle especially when it really goes over-the-top and many of the actresses are eye-goggling gorgeous.

And that's it for me. Thanks to Shugs for hosting and delivering incredible stats and to all my fellow challengers - especially flavo who pushed me so hard I finally broke 200 in a month. And that was just a month after looking at stats albajos posted of who had gone beyond 200 points for a challenge and thinking, "That's crazy. I'll never do that." It's still crazy but I did it. I averaged about 8.5 hours of watching movies each day so it was a little like working two full time jobs (except I managed to overlap a little by watching movies at work on my lunchbreaks). Thank Zod for my treadmill that enables me to get in a good run while watching a movie - otherwise I would be a blob right now.

Yea, I can't say I'm super excited about that one but I think I'm gonna force myself to really dig into Bollywood and try to find some gold. I feel like I'm always complaining about Bollywood being terrible, but really I've mostly only seen super popular stuff like 3 Idiots and Lagaan. It's like people complaining about Hollywood having only seen stuff like Transformers and Shawshank Redemption.
Try to find Khuda Gawah (God is My Witness). It's almost as if Sergio Leone made a Bollywood film and is by far my favorite. Unfortunately, it was the first epic Bollywood musical that I saw and set the standard very high for me.
I'll add it to my queue and see how it goes. There are a few I have some hope for. I actually liked No Smoking and am interesting in watching Gangs of Wasseypur from the same director. I've heard it's good.
I have not seen either of those but I've added them to my watchlist. Along with some of titles you watched this month - like that 2011 Wonder Woman I was previously unaware of.

Thanks for pushing me so hard this month - I would not have topped 200 without you!

tied third of the top scores as well. Good that we are 3 different people on top. If one person had all the top scores - THAT would be crazy

The fun thing is that I knew I had to keep 110 or less points behind you so you didn't caught up to me on the cumulative leaderboard. I thought I would be safe with 100, but of course you had to score 1 more point

5. First Spaceship on Venus (Maetzig, 1960). Okay, so I watched the Corman version, it was what was available. Still not too impressed.
6. The Transatlantic Tunnel (Elvey, 1935). Hmmm... Considering when it was made it wasn't bad, but somehow it didn't really work for me.
7. Zardoz (Boorman, 1974). I've heard a lot of stuff about this one over the years. I don't think it's "strange" (it's a lot like most movies with a psychedelic elements) and I think the allegory is pretty obvious. Not bad.

1. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Abrams, 2019)
2. X: The Man with X-Ray Eyes (Corman, 1963)
3. Just Imagine (Butler, 1930)

5. First Spaceship on Venus (Maetzig, 1960)

tied third of the top scores as well. Good that we are 3 different people on top. If one person had all the top scores - THAT would be crazy
and not nearly as much fun.

The fun thing is that I knew I had to keep 110 or less points behind you so you didn't caught up to me on the cumulative leaderboard. I thought I would be safe with 100, but of course you had to score 1 more point
There's always next year!

Thanks Shugs for hosting/coordinating. This was a lot of fun and coincided with a bunch of films/shows I'd been wanting to watch for some time, and me just randomly having a lot of time to compete in a challenge. Looking forward to the next one(s)!

Well, don't expect a whole lot from that 2011 Wonder Woman. It was a failed pilot for a reason...

As for pushing you to top 200, glad I'm good for something. Actually this is only maybe the second or third time I've topped 200. Sci-fi and Horror always seem to just make me wanna keep watching stuff.

And an indication that triples were way too easy. Like if the low-rated and 1980s challenges were the same month as sci-fi or horror challenges... People would have a field day!
