Barely distinguishable from the average 50s noir out there despite the exotic setting. The story is familiar, with a young pianist who becomes obsessed with a wheelchair-bound rich man's much younger wife. Questions arise throughout the film as to whether the pianist, the wife or someone else will try to bump off the old man for his fortune, but the film never muscles up much tension. The beachside vistas of Havana look great though at dusk/night.

This French/UK co-production is a typically solidly and emotionally devastating working class drama from Ken Loach, cut from the same cloth as I, Daniel Blake with the same screenwriter on hand. I didn't particularly like the son's character development here, but the mother, father and daughter are all developed very well and the performances by all three are spot-on. Kris Hitchen definitely deserves some awards season recognition.

Hey Everyone -- With the challenge closing in a couple of days, I've added a poll question, which you can find at the top of the page. Compared to the previous version of this challenge, I switched to a system for this edition where people determine the nationality of a movie by picking one of the countries listed on that movie's imdb page. In the previous edition of the challenge, people just declared the nationality of a movie based entirely on what they thought most appropriate.

Please vote for the system you prefer, which will be useful if and when this challenge runs again.

Just as background info, I moved to the new system because I wanted to simplify the process of determining nationality. Using a comprehensive external source, I thought, would eliminate the occasionally tedious discussion of whether a movie was more Austrian or Italian, as well as the even more tedious discussions about the sovereign status of places like Greenland and Western Sahara. The drawback is that imdb has a very loose policy with nationality, which means that sometimes movies are listed under countries that seem a bit strange.

By the way, does anyone know how to add a second poll question? For some reason, I'm only able to create a poll with one question.

On your last question, IIRC, not possible - the imperfect workaround is to ask X questions and allow for up to X answers (e.g., with the Oscar reruns we do on the forum).

For your system of countries, I have a love/hate (mostly love) relationship with it - I hate it because I'm counting weird things for weird countries (e.g., Samsara is NOT a UAE movie, but it's listed there), and it seems weird counting it that way.

But I love it from both a participant and host perspective, as it makes participation really easy - it's new, so there's the obvious transition issues, but I thought this was a brilliant insight into how to host a challenge like this (I promise I was going to say this when the challenge was over). It's not the most obvious, nor is it the most intuitive way to do it. BUT, the rules make for a perfectly clear explanation of what's included and not. This leads to some gamification aspects (which I'm all for) of the challenges. And with the relative ubiquity of IMDB, a good excuse to at least check that site.

In short and from my own personal perspective, this was the smartest-hosted challenge I've seen.

Yeah I agree with Max on this. This decision was a very nice surprise and for me, it worked out perfectly. It's a shame we won't be doing this challenge next year.

Well, the other question I wanted to ask in a poll was whether people liked the new system of dealing with historical countries (choosing the present-day analogue for that country), or would people prefer a challenge where they can include no-longer-existing countries like East Germany and North Yemen?

A third option was used last time I think. ‘Only first IMDb country listed counts’. That’s my prefered option, but this was fun too. :)

Last time the methodology was not just to let people choose what they found appropriate: there was some guidance, coming from even earlier challenge I believe, and I liked quite a bit:

What I've been looking it is 1) Where are the actors/director from? 2) where was it filmed? 3) Where was it financed? 4) Where is it set?

1) is a must and I'd say two of the other three would be enough.
This year some reports made me cringe, I am more for a traveling experience than for a gaming one I guess.

I like your choices as host this time around, as having it this way lessens the burden as host. I remember my exchanges with sortile over Latvia and Wales a couple of years ago, haahaa. It's really up to the individual players to not exploit the system and simply railroad into the challenge European or American films with tenuous links to the countries they assign them to. I see that in this challenge and I do think it takes away from the potential for vibrancy and exploration that a challenge such as this is meant to foster. I can see the appeal of the gamification aspect as well that Maxwell alludes to, though.

I need to update my progress with my recent travels. I'll hope to do that today.
That's all, folks!

I don't trust imdb, so any movie with more than one country, I will doublecheck the info before watching it.

While 84cm tall Weng Weng never exudes half the charisma of Connery or Moore, he has some stellar fight scenes here as he jumps off, under and around all the villains and henchmen in this 007 parody. There are some cool gadgets too and the mimicked Bond theme is pretty decent. The plot is a mess though, the acting is third rate and there are some uncomfortable height jokes, but this more entertaining and a less exploitative than it sounds.

Progress:

I certainly haven't been paying too much attention to the film/country combos people are posting, but I haven't noticed too many posts with tenuous links to countries. I just looked through my 19 watches for this challenge, and I think there are only three where I recorded a different country in my spreadsheet (where I only record the primary country) than what I reported in the thread here [Barbecue - posted for Armenia, recorded for Australia; Samsara - posted for UAE, recorded for USA; Do You Trust this Computer? - posted for Japan, recorded for USA]. I just think there are different motivations for exploration. Personally, I'm focused on documentaries and learning more about different topics, so that's where I explore - I'm just reporting here according to the rules in the OP. I would certainly see myself choosing different films and a different approach were I to focus on this challenge. I just like the rules for their simplicity and clarity, and how they can be easily and consistently applied to everyone.

@blocho: I think a rule allowing for extinct countries (e.g., West Germany) would add a cool layer to the gamification and further simplify the hosting.

Of course, one additional rule to encourage wider exploration might be cool, too (e.g., you can't count more than 5 countries/continent until you've watched a film from each of the 6 continents).

If not especially realistic, the journey here makes for a fascinating personal identity tale as a runaway girl reassesses her place in the world, trying to take on the roles of surrogate daughter, sister and granddaughter to various strangers. In the lead role, Petra Lämmel absolutely shines in her only ever big screen performance. It is a complex role too, being so vulnerable, and yet acting so adult when others (especially a lost boy) are more vulnerable.

I like the simplicity of the rules as well, Maxwell. I wasn't highlighting anyone in particular with my comment. Having the rules like this gives participants a bit of leeway to explore in their favourite directions but it also places the onus of good judgment on their shoulders.

I would also be in favour of former countries being allowed, but that might lead to a muddying of the waters in cases such as Yugoslavia or Czechoslovakia. This is quite a clean and clear set-up as it is at present and I do think it has worked a treat!
That's all, folks!

40. The Corridor (1995) Lithuania

Image

With minimal dialogue and only occasional music, this Lithuanian motion picture is more of a mood piece than anything resembling a traditional narrative as we are taken around a rundown tenement building. Apparently, the film is meant to be a metaphor for uncertainty in Lithuania upon exiting the Soviet Union. The high contrast black and white photography is superb and having an androgynous teenage boy as a key character is interesting.

Taking some very serious topics regarding Nazi Germany, Taika Waititi gets a delicate balance between comedy and drama perfect here. While the propaganda, over-enthusiastic Nazis and Hitler imaginary friend get lots of laughs, the film also really explores the mindset of the indoctrinated youth and others around him. Sam Rockwell is particularly effective as a gung-ho soldier who we gradually realise is more disillusioned than he seems.

Previously watched...Show
1. Brick (Johnson, 2005, USA) Image 6/10
2. Extra Ordinary (Loughman-Ahern, 2019, Ireland) Image 4/10
3. Kick-Ass 2 (Wadlow, 2013, UK-USA) Image
For this sequel the directing and writing reigns have been handed from Matthew Vaughan and Jane Goldman to Jeff Wadlow, a director of low-budget, poorly-received genre fare, with predictable results. Despite being weaker across the board than its predecessor, there's still pieces of the original carried over which remind me of why I loved the first so much: acting, cinematography, music, casting... but it never delivers on the level it should.
4/10

Image

4. Femme Fatale (De Palma, 2002, France-Switzerland) Image
The plot contrivances are easy to mock but its cool aesthetic and neo-noir style help to make up for it, although it never comes close to topping the opening heist. I'm not quite convinced that the supreme silliness of the ending is meant to be a comment on these contrivances or a more banal statement about the power of dreams.

5. Krótki film o zabijaniu / A Short Film About Killing (Kieslowski, 1988, Poland) Image
Takes a long time to make its simplistic point, but in retrospect it does derive power from its bleak photography and direction.
6/10

Image

6. Mugen no jûnin / Blade of the Immortal (Miike, 2017, Japan) Image
Manga adaptation, that has a stop-start feel presumably reflecting the original chapters. The plot is generic fighting story, but Miike orchaestrates some impressive action scenes as Manji racks up a body count in the hundreds.
5/10

Image

7. Nostalgia de la luz / Nostalgia for the Light (Guzmán, 2010, Chile) Image
An essay documentary, contrasting the search for the disappeared of Pinochet's regime with the search for stars in the sky. Part inspiring and part depressing, it's done very well although it distorts the science to link calcium in bones with calcium in stars.
7/10

Image

8. Amintiri din epoca de aur / Tales from the Golden Age (Marculescu-Popescu-Mungiu-Uricaru-Höfer, 2009, Romania) Image
Lightly amusing anthology of satirical tales of bureaucracy and rackets that occurred in communist Romania. There are no bad episodes, but there's no stand out either. I kept wanting one to finish with a great twist, but the endings are more in the vein of a shrug of the shoulders at the crazy things that happened.
