Slimane Dazi and Didier Michon both deliver well as estranged father and bitter son respectively here; Michon's trajectory (gradual softening with love from his father) is predictable from the get-go though and the film shies over the pair learning to bond with Michon's change in the final third of the film feeling very sudden. The film has some curious bits and pieces though; most notably, an eccentric poet who the boy befriends in a random subplot.

An errand boy becomes obsessed with making a woman fall in love with him in this comedy. In line with cultural standards, his quest is more set on impressing the bride's father, something that makes Jit feel less romantic and more lust-driven. Dominic Makuwachuma is so likeable throughout though as the always-smiling protagonist that the film still sort of works, even if a subplot with a female spirit lady (see above) often distracts from his quest.

Bello Rashid is excellent here, balancing melancholy with mixed feelings of hope for her future. Her tale is so unrelentingly bleak, however, that is a little hard to take in, and with her extensive catalogue of problems (including keeping her HIV positive status secret) made things more melodramatic than realistic to me. That said, the look at working class life in the African nation was interesting, especially given the focus on self-sufficient women.

This is half-genre, half experimentaln but very intense and unusual.

While the two child actors at the heart of this film are excellent and carry much of the film, it is Fatimata Sanga's performance as an old lady (called a witch) that really resonates; forever calm and collected, we get a sense of a lonely person who has come to accept her lot in life but without losing faith in humanity. She also makes for an interesting contrast against the other adults in town whose superstitions and fears control their lives.

The supporting actors really steal the show here. Most notably, M. Emmet Walsh brings ample comic relief as a music-loving reporter, but there is also actual Namibian bushman Regopstaan who has amazing chemistry with our hero despite speaking no English other than "I Am". With everything leading to an over-the-top, explosive climax, it is easy to see why the film has gained a negative reputation, but this is generally exciting and well paced.

This was simply amazing. What begins as a lightweight comedy about various workers at a Cairo train terminal gradually morphs into a noir-like thriller as one of the workers slowly loses his mind in this intriguing movie. A plethora of close-up reaction shots serve to really plant us into the protagonist's shoes and help us understand his unfulfilled desire and the film culminates in an utterly haunting final few minutes with superb lighting choices.

Portraying a culture in which polygamy was once normal, this film is a curio, but as a comedy the laughs are weak. As expected, the new teen wife refuses to act like a traditional wife, but what this involves is her prancing around topless and seducing her husband. While this creates tension amongst the other wives (c.f. Raise the Red Lantern) the fact that she is so keen to please and impress her husband makes the film feel oddly anti-feminist.

18. I Compagni (Croatia, 1963)
This is an exemplary labor movie, of which there are too few. Portraying a monthlong strike in a textile mill in Turin during the late 1800s, the movie is convincing in its portrayal of the grievance of the workers (long hours and dangerous work), the initial fumblings towards collective action, the dismissive response of the owners, the efforts of an underground organizer played by Mastroianni, the challenges to solidarity posed by scabs and internal divisions, and the all too typical conclusion. The movie features an ensemble cast in which each character rings true. What's unusual here is the mix of drama with comedy. The story features plenty of farce and physical comedy. It's as if working-class neorealism got crossed with a sprinkling of opera buffa. Does this mix of genres improve or detract from the resulting movie? I'm not quite sure. There's comedy in everyday life, even in trying circumstances. And the laughs make the movie more enjoyable, though one wonders if lightening the mood makes the desperation of the workers seem less consequential.

19. Luna Papa (Tajikistan, 1999)
An offbeat comedy of manners with plenty of slapstick thrown in, set in Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. There are a few decent laughs here.

20. Workingman's Death (Austria, 2005)
According to its own title card, this movie offers a portrait of work in the 21st century in five chapters, which is not quite true. The fifth chapter is a minor one, and there's also a very brief but effective epilogue. The bulk of the movie, though gives us 25-30 minute segments on workers in Ukraine (coal miners), Indonesia (sulfur miners), Nigeria (butchers), and Pakistan (shipbreakers). The key, for me, is the title. Though the serious physical risk of the work is emphasized in three of the four segments, we don't actually see any injuries or harm. So what is the "death" of the title? I suppose it could refer to the eventual obsolescence of these jobs in a post-industrial future, a future hinted at in the epilogue which is set in a former German factory that has been repurposed as a park. But I think the title actually refers to the jobs themselves, each of which has to do with deconstruction of some sort, the taking apart of things which had once been full of life, whether cows or coal (vegetable matter in a different eon). The vast majority of people in the world work either in agriculture, factories, or service jobs. It is notable that none of these four chapters depict such workers. This is a deliberate choice by the filmmakers, and there is some beauty not only in the visuals of the movie but also in the perseverance and sense of community displayed by workers who undertake difficult, dangerous labor.

Half documentary, half dramatic reenactment, this film blurs the lines of fiction and reality as director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun returns to his native Chad to make a film set there. Roadblocks come with a lack of cinema culture (all the theatres from his childhood have shut down) and a general anti-cinema sentiment all round. Memorably, one local attacks the camera, stating that it is rude for the director to "steal someone's image" without asking.

Western Sahara's turbulent history as a disputed territory (still not self-governing today) is captured in this documentary. There are interviews with both historians and local Sahrawis who have very diverse ways of resisting the current Moroccan occupation of their land (calligraphy; politically charged songs; graffiti; planting walls of red flowers). There are also curious parallels to the much more widely covered and well-known Palestinian conflict.
