The central romance here (which many have compared to Romeo and Juliet) is rather formulaic and the whole focus of the film feels wrong since the impressionable younger sister is more intriguing. That said, this is very appealing as a look into a different world. The customs of the locals are fascinating and the natural vistas of Vanuatu are also captured in amazing glory - in particular, the burning embers from an active volcano (see above).

No. The reasons are

1) I've completed 'every country' few times so it doesn't leave much space to me to choose something new.
2) People in this challenge often choose films that do not actually belong to respective cinematographies; they think they completed a country with a film just set there.
3) I would compete only with intentions to win; I feel no desire to be in the middle of the table.

One of the first films ever produced by PNG, there are some interesting shots of the natural landscape and local people here; as a narrative though, the film leaves a lot to be desired. The movie feels like it was written by the screenwriters as they went along, consistently of loosely connected episodes rather than anything resembling a cohesive whole. The male protagonists also become best friends too quickly; same goes for a lacklustre romance.

This indie documentary looks at genetically modified foods and questions whether they are doing more harm than good. It is a curious topic, but director Jeremy Seifert makes the film too much about his children with an overload of home video footage and some ridiculous set pieces like running with his kids through a GM cornfield in head-to-toe protective gear. The secrecy and lack of transparency with big corporations is interesting though.

Fa'afiaula Sanote is excellent in the lead role here with his longing, silent stares conveying more than words could. The insight into Samoa culture and rituals is invariably fascinating too. As a narrative though, the film does not exactly offer anything new with its look at a shy man finding the courage to speak up for himself, as well as becoming comfortable enough with his body image to stop lurking in the shadows. Sanote is really good though.

Hi! It's been a while, but I'm trying to finish my goals for this year, so I'll probably squeeze a lot of movies in before the end of the year.

1. Hold The Dark (2018) - USA
Promising first half, but the second half was not good... I was also expecting a really different kind of movie based on the trailer.

2. L'année dernière à Marienbad (1961) - France
I knew this was going to be hard to watch, but I didn't even get through it in one sitting, had to take a break.

3. Andrei Rublev (1966) - Russia
Okay, definitely not my favourite Tarkovsky.

85. Australia - The House I Live In (2012)
86. Cyprus - This Is Not a Coup (2016)
87. Suriname - Tjúba tén: The Wet Season (2007)
88. DR Congo - Virunga (2014)
89. Costa Rica - Ice on Fire (2019)
90. Hong Kong - Poh wai ji wong (1994)
91. Trinidad and Tobago - And the Dish Ran Away with the Spoon (1992)

No, it doesn't. Or at least not here. Inspired by the life of Don Aronow, a speedboat enthusiast who gave up his career to design boats and became embroiled in illegal offshore activities, this is a lot less interesting than it sounds. The reverse ageing makeup and hairstyling is pitiful and hinders lead actor John Travolta from exuding any of his natural charisma. The dialogue is mostly bland too, primarily consisting of him calling speedboats sexy.

While molded as a high octane action vehicle, the premise is intriguing here and there are some excellently edited scenes as the hallucinogen-injected protagonist trips in and out of POW flashbacks while trying to fend off those out to get him. Not enough time though is ultimately given to this reality blur with an overload of scenes involving supporting characters explaining what is going on; meanwhile, the drug itself ironically remains a McGuffin.

Locals from both Greenland and Tuvalu are interviewed in this documentary about rising sea levels. While far apart, both places are affected by climate change, with the melting ice in northwestern Greenland forcing residents to move south, while the coastlines of Tuvalu begin to disappear. With lots of lengthy title cards (zero voiceover narration), this is not always that captivating, but the insight into the culture and lifestyles of both places is great.

Cruel relatives, unwanted pregnancies and wild parties interfere with the attempts of a handful of teenage girls to complete high school in this brief feature from the Solomon Islands. The title blatantly spells out the film's agenda and sentimental music choices do not help to get the message across, but this a fairly competent effort with some remarkable camerawork (lots of tracking shots; a final aerial shot) and decent acting by the amateur cast.

The metaphor is laid on a bit thick here with a mute female protagonist who both figuratively and literally cannot tell her own story after being raped. Clocking in at close to 90 minutes, the film also feels oddly drawn out with 33 minutes elapsing before the rape occurs. The film certainly ends on a potent note though with fiery final ten minutes. It is thoughtfully visualised too with many acute close-ups at key points. Strong performances too.
